هه‌ر كه‌سێك بچێته‌ ناوه‌وه‌، هيچ تروسكايیه‌كی هيوا نابينێت.

Inscribed above the Gate of Hell,

ئه‌م نووسینه‌ له‌سه‌ر ده‌رگەی دۆزه‌خ هه‌ڵكه‌ندراوه‌،

these ominous words warn dark tidings for Dante

ئه‌م وشه‌ هه‌ره‌شه‌ئامێزانه‌ ئاماژه‌ی داهاتويه‌كی ڕه‌ش به‌ دانتی ده‌ده‌ن

as he begins his descent into inferno.

كاتێك به‌ره‌و ئينفێرۆ ده‌چێته‌ خواره‌وه‌.

Yet despite the grim tone,

سه‌ره‌ڕای تاريكی بارودۆخه‌كه‌،

this prophecy sets into motion what is perhaps the greatest love story ever told;

ئه‌م پێشبينيیه‌ بۆ گه‌وره‌ترين چيرۆكی خۆشه‌ويستی ده‌گۆڕێت:

an epic journey that encompasses both the human and the divine.

كه‌ له‌ گه‌وره‌ترين چيرۆكی نێوان خودا و مرۆڤ پێكدێت.

But for Dante to reach benevolent salvation,

به‌ڵام بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی دانتی بگاته‌ ڕزگاربوون،

he must first find his way through Hell.

سه‌ره‌تا پێويسته‌ ڕێگه‌ی دۆزه‌خ بدۆزێته‌وه‌.

This landscape of torture is the setting for "Inferno,"

ئه‌م بارودۆخه‌ پڕ ئازاره‌ سروشتی ئينفێرنۆيه‌

the first in a three-part narrative poem

كه‌ به‌شێكه‌ له‌ سێ به‌شی هۆنراوه‌ی چيرۆكی

written by Dante Alighieri in the 14th century.

له‌ لايه‌ن دانتی ئيليگيری له‌ سه‌ده‌ی 14 نووسراوه‌.

Casting himself as the protagonist,

خۆی وه‌ك پاڵه‌وانی چيرۆكه‌ ئاشكرا ده‌كات،

Dante travels deeper and deeper into Hell’s abyss,

دانتي قوڵتر و قوڵتر ڕۆده‌چێته‌ ناو سه‌ختيیه‌كانی دۆزه‌خ،

witnessing obscene punishments distinct to each of its nine realms.

كه‌ گه‌واهی ئازارکێشان له‌ نۆ چينی دۆزەخ ده‌دات.

Beginning in Limbo, he travels through the circles of Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath,

سه‌ره‌تا، چينی ناباوه‌ڕه‌كانی پێش مه‌سيح، سه‌ردانی بازنه‌ی غه‌زه‌ب، چڵێسی، ته‌ماح،

Heresy, Violence, and Fraud,

گومڕابوون، توندوتيژی و ته‌ڵه‌كه‌بازی، توڕه‌یی، كفر

to the horrific ninth circle of Treachery,

و دواتر بۆ بازنه‌ی، ترسناكی و ناپاكی كردن،

where sinners are trapped under the watchful eyes of Satan himself.

The following two parts, "Purgatorio" and "Paradiso," continue Dante’s journey,

دوو بەشی داهاتوو، پورگارشیۆ و پارادایسۆ، هەر سەبارەت بە گەشتەکەی دانتێیە،

as he scales the Mount of Purgatory

کاتێک شاخی پاکبوونەوە دەپێوێت

and ascends the nine celestial spheres of Heaven.

و بۆ نۆ چینەکەی ئاسمان بەرز دەبێتەوە.

Written together over 10 years, these 3 sections comprise the "Divine Comedy"–

بەسەر یەکەوە لە ماوەی ١٠ ساڵ نووسراوە، ئەم سێ بەشە کۆمیدیای خودایی پێکدەهێنن

an allegorical imagining of the soul’s journey towards God.

کە چیرۆکێکی بەرجەستەکراوی روحە بۆ لای خودا.

But Dante’s "Divine Comedy" is more than just religious allegory.

بەڵام کتێبی کۆمیدیای خودایی تەنها چیرۆکێکی بەرجەستەکراوی ئاینی نییە.

It’s also a witty, scathing commentary on Italian politics.

چیرۆکێکی ڕەخنەئامێزە و ڕەخنە لە سیاسەتمەدارە ئیتاڵییەکان دەگرێت.

A soldier and statesman from Florence, Dante was staunchly faithful to God,

وەک سەرباز و دەوڵەتمەدارێکی فلۆرەنسا، دانتی لە ناخەوە پابەندی ئاین و خودا بوو،

but often critical of the Roman Catholic Church.

بەڵام ڕەخنەی لە کڵێسەی رۆمان کاتۆلیکی هەبوو.

He particularly disliked its rampant nepotism and practice of simony,

بە تایبەت دژی خزمخزمێنە و کڕین و فرۆشتنی پۆستەکانی ناو کڵێسە، یان

the buying and selling of religious favours such as pardons from sin.

کڕین و فرۆشتن بە خزمەتگوزارییە ئاینییەکان وەک لێبوردن لە تاوانە ئاینییەکان بوو.

Many groups took advantage of these corrupt customs,

چەندین گروپ سودیان لەم بارودۆخە گەندەڵە دەبینی،

but few supported them as much as the Guelfi Neri, or Black Guelphs.

بەڵام بەشێکی کەم خەڵکی وەک گولیفە ڕەش و سپییەکان پشتگیریان دەکردن.

This was a political and religious faction

ئەمە گروپێکی سیاسی و ئاینی بوون کە

which sought to expand the pope’s political influence.

دەیانویست دەسەڵاتی پاپا فراون بکەن.

Dante was a member of the Guelfi Bianchi, or White Guelphs–

دانتی ئەندامی گولیفە سپییەکان بوو،

who believed Florence needed more freedom from Roman influence.

کە باوەڕی وابوو فلۆرانس شایستەی ئازادبوونە لە ژێر کاریگەری کڵێسەی ڕۆمانی.

As a public representative for the White Guelphs,

Dante frequently spoke out against the pope’s power,

until the Black Guelphs leveraged their position

But rather than silencing him,

this lifelong exile led to Dante’s greatest critique of all.

Dishonored and with little hope of return,

the author freely aired his grievances with the Church and Italian society.

Writing the "Divine Comedy" in Italian,

نووسینی کۆمیدیای خودایی بە زمانی ئیتاڵی،

rather than the traditional Latin of the educated elite,

Dante ensured the widest possible audience for his biting political commentary.

نووسینە ڕەخنە ئامێزەکانی دانتی دەگەیشتە دەستی زۆرترین کەس.

In the "Inferno’s" circle of the Wrathful,

لە بەشی دۆزەخ، بازنەی توڕەیی،

Dante eagerly witnesses sinners

دانتی تاوانباران دەبینێت کە

tear Black Guelph Filippo Argenti limb from limb.

In the circle of Fraud,

لە بازنەی فێلبازیدا،

Dante converses with a mysterious sinner burning in the circle’s hottest flames.

He learns that this is Pope Nicholas III,

دواتر تێدەگات ئەمە پاپا نیکۆڵاسی سێهەمە،

who tells Dante that his two successors will take his place when they die—

all three guilty of simony and corruption.

Despite the bleak and sometimes violent imagery in "Inferno,"

سەڕەرای هەندێک وێنەی توندوتیژی و دڵتوندی لە دۆزەخ،

the "Divine Comedy" is also a love story.

کۆمیدیای خودایی، چیرۆکێکی خۆشەویستیشە.

Though Dante had an arranged marriage

سەڕەڕای ئەوەی دانتی دەبوایە لەگەڵ کچی

with the daughter of a powerful Florentine family,

he had also been unrequitedly in love with another woman since he was nine years old:

Beatrice Portinari.

Despite allegedly meeting just twice, she became Dante’s lifelong muse,

serving as the inspiration and subject for many of his works.

دواتر دەبێتە سەرچاوەی سروشی نووسینەکانی دانتی.

In fact, it’s Beatrice who launches his intrepid journey into the pits of Hell

لە ڕاستیدا، بتریشیا هانی دانتی دەدات گەشتێکی ئازایانە بەرەو ناخی دۆزەخ بکات

and up the terraces of Mount Purgatory.

و دواتر بەرەو شاخی پاک بڕوات.

Portrayed as a powerful, heavenly figure,

وەک ئافرەتێکی بەهێز و ئاسمانی وێنا کراوە،

she leads Dante through "Paradiso’s" concentric spheres of Heaven

ئەو ڕێنوێنی دانتی بۆ پارادایسۆ و ناخی بەهەشت دەکات

until he is finally face-to-face with God.

تا دەگاتە ئاستی گەیشتن بە دیداری خودا.

In the centuries since its publication,

چەندین سەدە دوای بڵاوکردنەوە،

the "Divine Comedy’s" themes of love, sin, and redemption

بابەتی خۆشەویستی، تاوان و تۆبە لە کۆمیدیای خودایی

have been embraced by numerous artists–

سەرچاوەی سروشی چەندین هونەرمەندی وەک

from Auguste Rodin and Salvador Dali, to Ezra Pound and Neil Gaiman.

ئۆگاستەس ڕۆدین، سالڤادۆر دالی، ئێزرا پاوند و نیل گایمان بووە.

And the poet himself received his own belated, earthly redemption in 2008,

و شاعیر خۆشی لە ساڵی ٢٠٠٨ لێخۆشبوونێکی درەنگی بۆ دەرکرا

when the city of Florence finally revoked Dante’s antiquated exile.
