In the depths of their underwater kingdom,

لە قوڵایی شانشینە ژێر ئاوییەکەیاندا،

the mighty Dragon Lords quaked with fear.

ئەژدیھا خاوەن دەسەڵاتە گەورەکان لەرزین لە ترسا.

Before them pranced Sun Wukong, the Monkey King.

لە پێش ئەواندا سەن ووکۆنگ بازیدا، پاشا مەیمونەکە.

The legendary troublemaker been hatched from a stone, schooled in divine magic,

سەر بە کێشە ئەفسانەییەکە لە بەردێکەوە سەری ھەڵھێنا، کە جادووی پیرۆز فێرکرا بوو،

and was currently brandishing the Dragon Lord’s most treasured weapon.

This magical staff,

originally large enough to measure the depth of a great flood,

now obeyed the Monkey King’s will and shrank at his touch.

Terrified of this bewildering power,

بە توانا سەرسوڕمێنەرەکەی ترسا،

the Dragons graciously allowed Sun Wukong to keep the staff.

ئەژدیھاکان بەبەزەییەوە ڕێگەیان بە سەن ووکۆنگ دا پارێزگاری لە داردەستەکە بکات.

The Monkey King stowed the weapon away,

پاشا مەیمونەکە داردەستەکەی شاردەوە،

and gleefully sped back to his kingdom to show this treasure

بەخۆشیەوە خێرا گەڕایەوە بۆ شانشینەکەی کە ئەم گەنجینەیان نیشان بدا

to his tribe of warrior monkeys.

بۆ ھۆزی مەیمونە جەنگاوەرەکانی.

After a lavish celebration, Sun Wukong fell into a deep sleep.

دوای ئاھەنگ گێڕانێکی بڵاو سەن ووکۆنگ کەوتە ناو خەوێکی قووڵەوە.

But just as he began to dream,

بەڵام کاتێک دەستی بە خەون بینین کرد،

the Monkey King quickly realized two things.

پاشا مەیمونەکە بەخێرایی لە دوو شت گەیشت.

The first was that this was no ordinary slumber.

یەکەم ئەوە بوو کە ئەمە نوستنێکی ئاسایی نییە.

The second was that he wasn’t alone.

دووەم ئەوە بوو کە ئەو تەنھا نەبوو.

Suddenly, he found himself caught in the clutches of two grisly figures.

لەناکاو، خۆی بینی کە گیرا بوو لەلایەن دوو شکڵی ترسناکەوە.

At first the Monkey King didn’t know who his captors were.

لە سەرەتادا پاشا مەیمونەکە نەیدەزانی کە کێ بە دیلی گرتبوو.

But as they dragged him toward their city’s gates,

بەڵام کاتێک ڕایانکێشا بەرەو دەروازەکانی شارەکە،

Sun Wukong realized his deathly predicament.

سەن ووکۆنگ بە بارودۆخە کوشندەکەی زانی.

These were soul collectors tasked with transporting mortals

ئەوان کۆکەرەوەی ڕۆح بوون ئەرکیان گواستنەوەی نەماوەکان بوو

to the Realm of the Dead.

بۆ جیھانی مردووەکان.

This was the domain of the Death Lords,

ئەوە ناوچەی خاوەن دەسەڵاتەکانی مردن بوو،

who mercilessly sorted souls and designed gruesome punishments.

کە بێبەزەییانە ڕۆحەکانیان جیا دەکردەوە و سزا ترسناکەکانیان دادەنا.

From here, the kingdom of death was laid out before him.

لێرەوە، شانشینی مردن لە پێشی دانرابوو.

He could see the Death Lord’s palaces,

دەیتوانی شوێنی خاوەن دەسەڵاتەکانی مردن ببینێت،

and the fabled bridge across the river Nai He.

Manning the bridge was an old woman who offered worthy souls a bowl of soup.

After drinking, the spirits forgot their previous life,

دوای خواردنەوەی، ڕۆحەکان ژیانی پێشوویان لە بیر دەکرد،

and were sent back to the world of the living in a new form.

ھەروەھا دەنێردرانەوە بۆ جیھانی زیندوو لە شێوەیەکی نوێدا.

Further below were the souls not worthy of reincarnation.

لە خوارتر ئەو ڕۆحانەی لێبوو کە گرینگ نەبوون لە نوێبوونەوەدا.

In this twisting maze of chambers,

لەم تۆڕەڕێ بادراوەی ژوورەکاندا،

unfortunate spirits endured endless rooms of punishment—

ڕۆحە بەدبەختەکان ئازاریان دەچەشت لە ژوورە بێکۆتاکانی سزاداندا—

from mountains spiked with sharp blades, to pools of blood and vats of boiling oil.

لە کێوەکانەوە قەڵبەی نوکتیژ، بۆ گۆماوێکی خوێن و دەبەیەک ڕۆنی کوڵاو.

But Sun Wukong was not about to accept torture or reincarnation.

بەڵام سەن ووکۆنگ ئەشکەنجەدان و نوێبوونەوەی قبوڵ نەدەکرد.

As the soul collectors attempted to drag him through the gates,

ھەروەک کۆکەرەوەی ڕۆحەکان ھەوڵیاندا ڕایبکێشن بەناو دەروازەکاندا،

the Monkey King whipped out his staff and swung himself out of their clutches.

پاشا مەیمونەکە بەخێرایی داردەستەکەی دەرکرد و خۆی لەژێر دەستیان دەرکرد.

His battle cries and the clang of weapons echoed throughout the underworld.

جەنگەکەی جاڕدراو تەقەتەقی چەکەکانی لە ھەموو دۆزەخ دەنگیدایەوە.

Sensing a disturbance, the ten Death Lords swooped upon him.

ھەستیان بە تێکچونێک کرد دە خاوەن دەسەڵاتەکەی مردن ھێرشیان بۆ برد.

But they had never met such resistance from a mortal soul.

بەڵام ھەرگیز بەرگریەکی لەو شێوەیەیان لە ڕۆحێکی تیاچوو نەبینیبوو.

What was this unusual creature?

ئەم بونەوەرە نائاساییە چی بوو؟

And was he a mortal, a god— or something else?

ئایا ئەو تیاچوویەک بوو، خودا بوو—یان ھەر شتێکی تر؟

The Lords consulted the Book of Death and Life—

خاوەن دەسەڵاتەکان ڕاوێژیان کرد بە کتێبی ژیان و مردن—

a tome which showed the time of every living soul’s death.

پەڕتووکە گەورەکە کە کاتی مردنی ھەموو ڕۆحە زیندووەکانی نیشاندا.

Not knowing what category this strange being was under,

نەیدەزانی ئەم گیانەوەرە نامۆیە لەژێر چ جۆرێکە،

the Death Lords struggled to find Sun Wukong at first;

خاوەن دەسەڵاتەکانی مردن لەسەرەتادا ھەوڵیان دەدا سەن ووکۆنگ بدۆزنەوە؛

but the Monkey King knew just where to look.

بەڵام پاشا مەیمونەکە دەیزانی سەیری کوێ بکات.

Unfortunately, the records confirmed the Death Lord’s claim—

بەداخەوە، تۆمارەکان بانگەشەی خاوەن دەسەڵاتەکانی مردنیان چەسپاند—

Sun Wukong was scheduled to die this very night.

سەن ووکۆنگ تۆمار کرا کە بمرێت لەو شەوەدا.

But the Monkey King was not afraid.

بەڵام پاشا مەیمونەکە نەدەترسا.

This was far from the first time he’d defied destiny

ئەمە دوور بوو لەوەی کاتێک یەکەم جار بەرەنگاری چارەنووس بووەوە

in his quest for wisdom and power.

لە بەدواداگەڕانی ژیری و توانا.

His past rebellions had earned him the power to transfigure his body,

یاخیگەریەکانی پێشووی توانای گۆڕانی جەستەی بۆ پەیدا کردبوو،

ride clouds at dizzying speeds, and govern his tribe with magic and martial arts.

سواربوونی ھەورەکان بەخێرایی سەرگێژخواردن، فەرمانڕەوایی ھۆزەکەی بە جادو و ھونەری جەنگ

In this crisis, he saw yet another opportunity.

لەم تەنگژەیەدا، دەرفەتێکی تری بینی.

With a flash of his nimble fingers,

بە بریقەی پەنجە گورجەکانی،

the Monkey King struck his own name from the Book.

پاشا مەیمونەکە ناوی خۆی لە پەڕتوکەکەوە لێدا.

Before the Death Lords could respond,

پێش خاوەن دەسەڵاتەکانی مردن وەڵام بدەنەوە

he found the names of his monkey tribe and swept them away as well.

ناوی مەیمونەکانی ھۆزەکەی بینی و ھی ئەوانیشی لابرد.

Liberated from the bonds of death,

لە بەندی مردن ڕزگاری کردن،

Sun Wukong began to battle his way out of the underworld.

سەن ووکۆنگ دەستی بە ململانێ کرد دژی دۆزەخ.

He deftly defeated endless swarms of angry spirits—

بە کارامەیی جەنجاڵی بێکۆتای ڕۆحە توڕەکانی بەزاند—

before tripping on his way out of the kingdom.

پێش چوونەدەرەوەی لە شانشینەکە.

Just before he hit the ground, Sun Wukong suddenly awoke in his bed.

پێش ئەوەی لە زەویەکە بدات سەن ووکۆنگ لەناکاو لەجێگەکە ھەستا

At first he thought the journey might have been a dream,

لەسەرەتادا بیریدەکردەوە گەشتەکە خەون بوو بێت،

but the Monkey King felt his new immortality surging

بەڵام پاشا مەیمونەکە ھەستی دەکرد نەمریەکەی دەردەپەڕێ

from the top of his head to the tip of his tail.

لە لوتکەی سەریەوە بۆ لوتکەی کلکی.

With a cry of triumph, he woke his warriors to share his latest adventure—

بە ھاواری سەرکەوتن، جەنگاوەرەکانی خەبەر کردەوە بۆ بەشداری سەرکێشی نوێ—

and commence another round of celebration.
