و ئه‌وه‌ "شێوه‌زاره‌کانه‌"

my mom holds her accent like a shotgun,

دایکم وه‌کو تفه‌نگێک شێوه‌زاره‌که‌ی دەپاراست،

with two good hands.

بە هەردوو دەستە باشەکانی.

her tongue, all brass knuckle

زمانی ،بۆکسی ئاسنین بوو

slipping in between her lips

له‌ نێوان لێوه‌کانی ده‌رده‌چێت

her hips, are all laughter and wind clap.

لێوی، پێکه‌ناویه‌ و دەنگی باییە.

she speaks a sanchocho of spanish and english,

ئه‌و به‌ تێکەڵەیەکی ئیسپانی و ئینگلیزی قسه‌ ده‌کات،

pushing up and against one another,

دژ به‌یه‌کتری و تێکه‌ڵیان ده‌کات،

in rapid fire

به‌ خێرای ئاگر

there is no telling my mama to be "quiet,"

نابێت بڵێت بێ دەنگ بە،

my mama don't know "quiet."

دایکم بێ دەنگی ناناسێت،

her voice is one size better fit all

قەبارەی دەنگی دایکم بۆ هەموو شتێک دەگونجێت

and you best not tell her to hush,

و واباشترە پێی نەگوترێت بێ دەنگ بە،

she waited too many years for her voice to arrive

ئه‌و چه‌ندین ساڵ چاوه‌ڕوان بوو بۆ گه‌یشتنی ده‌نگی

to be told it needed house keeping.

بۆ ئەوەی تێبگات کە لە ماڵ بمێنێتەوە.

English sits in her mouth remixed

ئینگلیزی له‌سه‌ر زمانی تێکەڵەیە

so "strawberry" becomes "eh-strawbeddy"

"ستراوبه‌ری" دەبێتە"ه‌ه-ستراوبه‌ددی"

and "cookie" becomes "eh-cookie"

و "کوکی" دەبێتە"ه‌ه-کۆکی"

and kitchen, key chain, and chicken all sound the same.

وه کیچن ، کی چه‌ین، و چیکن هه‌موویان چونیه‌کن

my mama doesn't say "yes"

دایکم ناڵێت "به‌ڵێ"

she says, "ah ha"

ئه‌و ده‌ڵێت،"ئه‌ ها"

and suddenly the sky in her mouth becomes a Hector Lavoe song.

و له‌ناکاو ئاسمانی لێوی ده‌بێته‌ گۆرانیه‌کی هێکته‌ر لاڤۆ.

her tongue can't lay itself down flat enough

زمانی ناتوانێت ته‌خت بێت به‌ته‌واوی

for the English language,

بۆ زمانی ئینگلیزی،

it got too much hip

ئه‌وه‌ زۆرترين به‌رکه‌وتنی هەبوو

too much bone

زۆرترین ئێسک

too much conga

it be an anxious child wanting to

make Play-Doh out of concrete

لە قوڕ هەوریر درووست بکات

English be too neat for

ئینگلیزی نەرمترە لەوەی

her kind of wonderful.

بتوانێت ناخی دایکم دەرببڕێت.

her words spill in conversation

لە گفتوگۆدا، وشەکانی گونجاوە بۆ

between women whose hands are all they got

بۆ ئەو ژنانەی کە زیاتر لە دەستیان نییە

sometimes our hands are all we got

هەندێک کات، دەستەکان تەنها شتی ئێمەن

and accents that remind us that we are still

bomba, still plena

میوزیکی بۆمبا، پێلناین

you say "wepa"

تۆ ده‌ڵێیت "وێپا"

and a stranger becomes your hermano,

و نه‌ناسراوێک بکه‌یته‌ برات

you say "dale"

تۆ ده‌ڵێیت "دالی"

and a crowd becomes a family reunion.

و جه‌نجاڵیه‌ک بکه‌یته‌ خێزانێکی کۆکراوه‌.

my mother's tongue is a telegram from her mother

زمانی دایکم بروسکه‌یه‌که‌ بۆ دایکی

decorated with the coqui's of el campo

ڕازاندراوه‌ته‌وه‌ به‌ کێڵگه‌یه‌کی بۆق

so even when her lips can barely

هه‌رچه‌نده‌ لێوه‌کانی که‌مێک ده‌توانێت

stretch themselves around english,

وه‌کو ئینگلیزی بێت،

her accent is a stubborn compass

قیبله‌نمایه‌کی شێوه‌زاره‌که‌ی جێگیره‌

always pointing her

هه‌میشه‌ ئاڕاسته‌ی ده‌کات

towards home.
