Miniature,

Miniature,

something distinctively smaller

شتێک کە بە شێوەیەکی ڕێژەی بچووک بێت

than other members of its type or class.

Miniature traces its roots to the Latin, <i>minium</i>,

ئەم وشەیە لە ڕەگی وشەی لاتینی minium سەر چاوە دەگرێت

which meant, "red lead".

Minium referred, in particular, to a compound of lead

Minium بۆ پێکهاتەیەکی کیمیایی گۆگرد بەکار دێت

used as a pigment in Medieval times.

In those days, because there were no printing presses,

بەهۆی ئەوەی ئامێری چاپ کردن بوونی نەبوو

groups of scribes were tasked with

painstakingly copying all books by hand.

Whenever they needed to denote a chapter break

هەر کاتێک بیانویستبا نیشانەی کۆتایی بەشێک

or a division of text,

یان نووسینەکەیان جیا کردباوە

scribes would switch from standard black

خۆشنووسەکان لە ڕەنگی ڕەشی باو

to the red pigment, minium.

رەنگەکان بۆ سور دەگۆری minium.

Another important visual device used to increase

ئەمە وەک ئامرازێکی بینراو بەکار دەهات

the prominence of certain portions of text

بۆ دەرخستنی گرنگی بەشێکی تێکستەکە

was to set them off

بە شێوەیەک دیاری دەکرا

with large, ornate, and colorful capital letters,

پیتەکان بەرز، بە جوانی و رەنگاو رەنگ دەکران،

often surrounded by tiny, detailed paintings.

و تابلۆ بچووک و رەنگنیان لە پاڵدا دەکێشرا.

The Italians began to refer

ئیتاڵییەکان بەمەیان دەگووت

to these elaborate and diminutive paintings

تابلۆ بچووک و وردەکان

as <i>miniatura</i>, illuminations.

Miniature بە واتایی ڕووناک کردنەوە.

Because of the necessarily small size of the paintings,

بەهۆی پێداویستییەکانی کێشانی تابلۆیەکی بچووک

miniatura began to be associated with all things wee

miniature بۆ هەموو شتێکی بچووک بەکار دەهات

and spawned to other words with the same base,

چەندین وشەی هەمان ڕەگی لێ درووست دەبێت،

like the Latin <i>minimum</i>, for least.

بە لایەنی کەمەوە وەک وشەی لاتینی minimum.

Miniatura was transmuted into English

Miniatura دەگوازرێتەوە ناو زمانی ئینگلیزی

in the 16th century as the word, <i>miniature</i>,

لە سەدەی شانزەهەمدا وەک وشەی miniature

and since that time,

it has had the exact same meaning we use today.

بەهەمان واتایی ئەو کات تا ئێستا بەکار دێت.
