In ancient Kyoto, a devout Shinto scholar lived a simple life,

옛날 교토에 한 신도 승려가 단출한 생활을 하고 있었는데

but he was often distracted from his prayers by the bustling city.

마을의 번잡한 소리 탓에 자주 기도에 집중할 수 없었습니다.

He felt that his neighbors were polluting his soul,

그는 마을 사람들이 자신의 영혼을 더럽히고 있다고 생각했습니다.

and he sought to perform some kind of personal harae—

그래서 그는 개인적으로 ‘하라에’를 하고 싶었습니다.

a purification ritual that would cleanse his body and his mind.

하라에는 몸과 정신을 깨끗이 하는 정화 의식입니다.

He decided to travel to the revered Hie Shrine.

그는 신성한 히에 사원에 가기로 했습니다.

The trip was an arduous climb that took all day.

온종일 걸리는 길은 고되었지만

But he was glad for the solitude it afforded him,

그는 고독한 시간을 즐겼고

and the peace he felt upon returning home was profound.

돌아오는 길이 주는 평화는 아주 심오했습니다.

The scholar was determined to maintain this clarity for as long as possible,

승려는 맑은 정신을 가능한 한 오랫동안 간직하고 싶었습니다.

and resolved to make this pilgrimage another 99 times.

그래서 이 순례를 99번 더 하기로 다짐했죠.

He would walk the path alone, ignoring any distractions in his quest for balance,

홀로 길을 걷고

조화를 흐트러트리는 어떤 것에도 마음을 뺏기지 않았고

and never straying from his purpose.

목표에서 벗어나지 않았습니다.

The man was true to his word, and as days stretched into weeks,

승려는 자신의 말에 충실했고 며칠은 몇 주가 되었습니다.

he walked through driving rain and searing sun.

몰아치는 빗속을 걷고 뜨거운 햇살 아래를 걸었습니다.

Over time, his devotion revealed the invisible world of spirits

헌신적인 노력 끝에 그의 눈앞에는 영혼의 세계가 보이기 시작했습니다.

which exists alongside our own.

우리들 옆에 존재하는 세상이지요.

He began to sense the kami, which animated the rocks underfoot,

그는 신의 존재를 느끼게 되었습니다.

신은 발아래에서 움직이는 돌로, 열기를 식혀주는 시원한 바람으로,

the breeze that cooled him, and the animals grazing in the fields.

들판에서 풀을 뜯는 동물의 모습으로 나타났습니다.

Still he spoke to no one, spirit or human.

여전히 그는 영혼이든, 인간이든 누구와도 말을 하지 않았습니다.

He was determined to avoid contact with those who had strayed

길을 벗어나 방황하며 부정으로 더럽혀진 것들과 마주치는 것을

from the path and become polluted with kegare.

그는 단호하게 피했습니다.

This taboo of defilement hung over the sick and deceased,

병자와 망자들에게 이런 부정함이 있었고

as well as those who defiled the land or committed violent crimes.

땅을 더럽히거나 죄를 지은 이들도 이러한 부정함을 지니고 있었습니다.

Of all of the threats to the scholar’s quest for spiritual purity,

영적인 순결을 추구하는 승려에게

kegare was by far the greatest.

케가레는 가장 피해야 할 것이었습니다.

After paying his respects for the 80th time,

여든 번째 순례를 마친 후에

he set out for home once more.

승려는 다시 집으로 향했습니다.

But as darkness fell, he heard strained sobs in the night air.

그런데 어둠이 내린 후, 밤공기 속에서 앓는 듯한 흐느낌 소리가 들렸습니다.

The scholar tried to push forward and ignore the moans.

승려는 그 신음 소리를 무시하고 계속 걸어가려고 했습니다.

But the desperate cries overwhelmed him.

그러나 간절한 울음소리가 그를 휘감았습니다.

Grimacing, he left his path to follow the sound to its source.

승려는 얼굴을 찌푸리면서 소리가 나는 쪽으로 갔습니다.

He soon came to a cramped cottage, with a woman crumpled outside.

곧 작은 집 밖에서 엎어져 있는 여자를 보았습니다.

Filled with pity, the scholar implored the woman to share her sorrow.

승려는 안타까운 마음에 슬퍼하는 이유를 물었습니다.

She explained that her mother had just died—

그녀는 어머니가 방금 돌아가셨는데

but no one would help her with the burial.

아무도 장례를 도와주지 않는다고 말했습니다.

At that news, his heart sank.

그 이야기를 듣고 그는 가슴이 철렁 내려앉았습니다.

Touching the body would defile his spirit,

시신에 손을 대면 그의 정신은 더럽혀질 것이고

draining his life force and leaving him forsaken by the kami.

생명력이 고갈되고, 신에게 버림받을 것입니다.

But as he listened to her cries, his sympathy soared.

그러나 그녀의 울음소리에 마음이 너무나 아팠습니다.

And so, they buried the old woman together,

그래서 그는 함께 시신을 묻고

to ensure her safe passage into the spirit world.

저승으로 잘 떠날 수 있도록 했습니다.

The burial was complete, but the taboo of death weighed heavily on the scholar.

장례는 마쳤지만 승려는 금기를 깨서 마음이 무거워졌습니다.

How could he have been so foolish,

’왜 이런 어리석은 짓을 해서

to shirk his most important rule and corrupt his divine journey?

가장 중요한 규율을 어기고 신성한 순례길을 망쳤을까?′

After a tormented night,

그렇게 고통스러운 밤을 보내고

he resolved to go back to the shrine to cleanse himself.

정화를 위해 사원으로 다시 갔습니다.

To his surprise, the usually quiet temple was filled with people,

놀랍게도 늘 조용하던 절에 사람들이 가득했습니다.

all gathering around a medium who communicated directly with the kami.

그들은 신과 직접 대화하는 영매의 주위에 모여있었습니다.

The man hid himself, not daring approach in case anyone glimpse his polluted soul.

그는 불결한 영혼을 들킬까 싶어 감히 다가가지 못하고 숨어버렸습니다.

But the medium had other ways of seeing, and called him forward from the crowd.

그러나 영매는 그의 존재를 알고 앞으로 오라고 불렀습니다.

Ready to be forsaken, the scholar approached the holy woman.

승려는 신에게 버림받을 각오를 하고 다가갔습니다.

But the medium merely smiled.

그러나 영매는 미소만 지었습니다.

She took his impure hand in hers,

그녀는 그의 불결한 손을 잡고

and whispered a blessing only he could hear—

작은 소리로 축복을 빌어주면서

thanking him for his kindness.

그의 배려에 고마움을 전했습니다.

In that moment, the scholar discovered a great spiritual secret:

그 순간 승려는 위대한 영적 비밀을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

contamination and corruption are two very different things.

행동과 정신의 불결함은 서로 아주 다르다는 것입니다.

Filled with insight, the scholar set himself back on his journey.

많은 깨달음을 얻고 승려는 다시 길을 떠났습니다.

그러나 이번에는 가던 길을 멈추고 만나는 사람들을 도왔습니다.

But this time, he stopped to help those he met.

He began to see the beauty of the spirit world everywhere he went,

가는 곳마다 그는 정신 세계의 아름다움을 보기 시작했습니다.

even in the city he'd previously shunned.

심지어 이전에는 멀리했던 도시에서도 그랬습니다.

Others cautioned that he risked kegare—

어떤 이들은 케가레를 범하고 있다고 주의를 줬습니다.

but he never told them why he so freely mingled

그러나 그는 병자나 장애인들에게 거리낌 없이 도움을 주는 이유를

with the sick and disadvantaged.

아무에게도 말해주지 않았습니다.

For he knew that people could only truly understand harae

사람들은 자신의 여정을 통해서만

하라에를 진정으로 깨달을 수 있음을 알았기 때문입니다.

through a journey of their own.
