And in this video we are  going to talk about ‘puns’. 

ပြီးတော့ ဒီဗီဒီယိုမှာ 'ပွန်းပဲ့' အကြောင်း ပြောသွားမယ်။

Okay. Now puns are very difficult to understand. 

ဟုတ်ပြီ အခု စာလုံးတွေက နားလည်ရခက်တယ်။

Very difficult to hear. And very difficult to use. 

ကြားရတာ အရမ်းခက်တယ်။ အသုံးပြုရအလွန်ခက်ခဲသည်။

So this video is an advanced video  and I don't expect my students to  

ထို့ကြောင့် ဤဗီဒီယိုသည် အဆင့်မြင့်ဗီဒီယိုတစ်ခုဖြစ်ပြီး ကျွန်ုပ်၏ကျောင်းသားများသည်

start making their own puns very soon. So this video is more for fun just to understand

Now, what is a pun?

။ ကဲ၊ ပွန်းဆိုတာ ဘာလဲ။

Well, a ‘pun’ is kind of a word used in a joke. And the word has two meanings. 

ကောင်းပြီ၊ 'pun' သည် ဟာသတွင်သုံးသော စကားလုံးတစ်မျိုးဖြစ်သည်။ ပြီးတော့ စကားလုံးက အဓိပ္ပါယ်နှစ်မျိုးရှိတယ်။

Okay. So to help you,  

ဟုတ်ပြီ ဒါကြောင့် မင်းကိုကူညီဖို့

we're just going to jump into an example. And I have a very simple example here. 

ငါတို့က ဥပမာတစ်ခုထဲကို ခုန်ဆင်းမယ်။ ပြီးတော့ ဒီမှာ အရမ်းရိုးရှင်းတဲ့ ဥပမာတစ်ခုရှိတယ်။

‘Korea has Soul’

'Korea has Soul'

This is a pun.

ဟူသည့် စကားတစ်ခွန်း။

The word that is a pun is soul because  soul has two meanings of course. 

ဝိဥာဉ်ဟူသော စကားလုံးသည် ဝိဥာဉ်ဖြစ်ပြီး အဓိပ္ပါယ်နှစ်မျိုးရှိသောကြောင့် ဖြစ်သည်။

Now, when I say Korea has soul, this is s o u l. That soul means, Korea has some  

အခု ကျွန်တော် ကိုရီးယားမှာ ဝိညာဉ်ရှိတယ် လို့ပြောရင် ဒါက sou l ပါ။ ထိုဝိညာဉ်ဆိုသည်မှာ ကိုရီးယားတွင်

spirit or some energy.

ဝိညာဉ် သို့မဟုတ် စွမ်းအင်အချို့ရှိသည်။

But of course it has another meaning.

ဒါပေမယ့် အဲဒါက တခြားအဓိပ္ပါယ်ရှိတယ်။

Because, soul, the spelling is  different but the sound is the same.

အဘယ်ကြောင့်ဆိုသော် ဝိညာဉ်သည် စာလုံးပေါင်းကွဲပြားသော်လည်း အသံသည် တူညီသောကြောင့်ဖြစ်သည်။

Seoul is a city in Korea. So when we say ‘Korea has soul’, it's kind  

ဆိုးလ်သည် ကိုရီးယား၏မြို့တစ်မြို့ဖြစ်သည်။ ဒါကြောင့် 'Korea has soul' လို့ ပြောတဲ့အခါ

of a joke because the ‘soul’ has two meanings. Okay. 

'ဝိညာဉ်' မှာ အဓိပ္ပာယ် နှစ်ခုရှိလို့ ဟာသတစ်ခုလို ဖြစ်နေပါတယ်။ ဟုတ်ပြီ

Now pun jokes are kind of not really haha funny.

ခုတော့ ပွန်းပဲ့ဟာသတွေက တကယ်ကို ဟားဟားရယ်စရာတော့ မဟုတ်ဘူး။

Usually when someone says a pun joke, everyone is kind of quiet.

အများအားဖြင့် တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်သည် ဟာသတစ်ခုပြောသောအခါတွင် လူတိုင်းသည် တိတ်ဆိတ်နေတတ်သည်။

And maybe we hear crickets. 

ပုရစ်တွေကြားတာလည်း ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

So if I said ‘Korea has soul’,  maybe everyone's oh yeah. 

ဒါကြောင့် 'ကိုရီးယားမှာ ဝိညာဉ်ရှိတယ်' လို့ ပြောရင် လူတိုင်းတော့ ဟုတ်ချင်မှဟုတ်မယ်။

Okay. All right. So let's take a look at a couple other  

ဟုတ်ပြီ ကောင်းပါပြီ။ ဒီတော့

examples of pun jokes to help you understand.

မင်းနားလည်အောင် ကူညီပေးမယ့် တခြားဟာသတွေရဲ့ ဥပမာ တချို့ကို ကြည့်ရအောင်

I have two more examples here to help you understand the pun jokes. Okay. 

။ မင်းပြက်လုံးတွေကို နားလည်အောင် ကူညီပေးဖို့ ဒီမှာ နောက်ထပ် ဥပမာနှစ်ခုရှိတယ်။ ဟုတ်ပြီ

The jokes, they use a pun. Again, they're not really haha funny. 

ပြက်လုံးတွေကို pun နဲ့ သုံးကြတယ်။ နောက်တစ်ခုက သူတို့ဟာ ဟားဟား ရယ်စရာတော့ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

You just kind of okay.

မင်းက အဆင်ပြေတယ်။

So the next one here.

ဒါဆို နောက်တစ်ခုက ဒီမှာ။

‘My bicycle fell… my bicycle  fell because it's two-tired.’ 

'ငါ့စက်ဘီး လဲကျတယ်... ပျင်းနေလို့ စက်ဘီးလဲကျသွားတယ်'

‘My bicycle fell because it's two-tired.’ All right. 

'စက်ဘီးက ပျင်းနေလို့ ပြုတ်ကျတာ။' ကောင်းပါပြီ။

So the blue word, that's the pun. And again, a pun has two meanings. 

ဒီတော့ အပြာရောင် စကားလုံး၊ အဲဒါ စာလုံးပေါင်း။ တစ်ဖန် အဓိပ္ပါယ်နှစ်ခုရှိသည်။

So why is this funny? or not so funny?

ဒါဆို ဒါကဘာလို့ရယ်စရာကောင်းတာလဲ။ ရယ်စရာမဟုတ်ဘူးလား

Too tired. Alright. So again, two meanings. 

ပင်ပန်းလွန်းတယ်။ ကောင်းပြီ ဒီတော့ အဓိပ္ပါယ် နှစ်ခု ရှိတယ်။

The first meaning, my bicycle has ‘two tires’. Okay. 

ပထမ အဓိပ္ပါယ်က ငါ့စက်ဘီးမှာ 'တာယာနှစ်လုံး' ရှိတယ်။ ဟုတ်ပြီ

The front tire and the back tire. So has only two tires. 

ရှေ့တာယာနှင့် နောက်တာယာ။ ဒီတော့ တာယာနှစ်လုံးပဲရှိတယ်။

So it fell. But there's also a second meaning. 

ဒါနဲ့ကျသွားတယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် ဒုတိယအဓိပ္ပါယ်လည်း ရှိတယ်။

It's ‘two tired’ sounds like t-o-o, very tired. So a bicycle fell because it's very tired. 

'ပင်ပန်းတယ်' ဆိုတဲ့ အသံက အရမ်းပင်ပန်းနေသလိုပဲ။ အရမ်းပင်ပန်းလို့ စက်ဘီးလဲကျသွားတယ်။

Alright. So ‘two tired’ sounds like ‘too tired’. 

ကောင်းပြီ ထို့ကြောင့် 'ပင်ပန်းခြင်း' သည် 'ပင်ပန်းလွန်းသည်' ဟု အသံထွက်သည်။

And too tired, very tired. Alright. 

ပြီးတော့ အရမ်းပင်ပန်းတယ်၊ အရမ်းပင်ပန်းတယ်။ ကောင်းပြီ

So that's what makes the pun funny. There's two meanings. 

ဒီတော့ စာလုံးက ရယ်စရာ ဖြစ်စေတယ်။ အဓိပ္ပါယ်နှစ်ခုရှိတယ်။

The next one - 

နောက်တစ်ခုကတော့

‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’ ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’

'ကျွန်တော်က ဘဏ်လုပ်ငန်းရှင်ဖြစ်ဖူးပေမယ့် အတိုးနည်းသွားတယ်။ 'ကျွန်တော်က ဘဏ်လုပ်ငန်းရှင်ဖြစ်ဖူးပေမယ့် အတိုးတော့ ပျောက်သွားတယ်။

Okay. This is the pun. 

ဟုတ်ပြီ ဤသည်ကား ပရိယာယ်ဖြစ်သည်။

This word has two meanings. The first meaning is ‘interest’ - I'm interested. 

ဤစကားသည် အဓိပ္ပါယ်နှစ်မျိုးရှိသည်။ ပထမ အဓိပ္ပါယ်က 'စိတ်ဝင်စားတယ်' - ငါစိတ်ဝင်စားတယ်။

Okay. So he lost interest. 

ဟုတ်ပြီ ဒါနဲ့ သူ စိတ်ဝင်စားသွားတယ်။

He's no longer interested in banking. So he's not a banker anymore. 

ဘဏ်လုပ်ငန်းကို စိတ်မဝင်စားတော့ဘူး။ ဒီတော့ သူက ဘဏ်သမား မဟုတ်တော့ဘူး။

That's one meaning.

ဒါ အဓိပ္ပါယ်တစ်ခုပဲ။

A second meaning is

ဒုတိယအဓိပ္ပါယ်မှာ

‘interest’ is actually a bank term bank.

'အတိုး' သည် အမှန်တကယ် ဘဏ်အခေါ်အဝေါ် ဘဏ်ဖြစ်သည်။

Bank vocabulary - when you put money in the bank.

Bank vocabulary - ဘဏ်မှာ ပိုက်ဆံထည့်တဲ့အခါ။

Okay. Every year the bank will give you interest. 

ဟုတ်ပြီ ဘဏ်က နှစ်တိုင်း အတိုးပေးတယ်။

For example, six percent or 4 percent. They give you interest every year. 

ဥပမာ ခြောက်ရာခိုင်နှုန်း သို့မဟုတ် ၄ ရာခိုင်နှုန်း။ သူတို့က မင်းကို နှစ်တိုင်း အတိုးပေးတယ်။

So he's not a banker anymore  because he lost interest. 

ဒါကြောင့် သူအတိုးနည်းသွားတဲ့အတွက် ဘဏ်လုပ်ငန်းရှင်မဟုတ်တော့ဘူး။

Which would mean he lost money. All right. 

ဆိုလိုတာက သူ ပိုက်ဆံ ဆုံးရှုံးသွားတယ်။ ကောင်းပါပြီ။

So this is funny. ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest’ 

ဒီတော့ ဒါက ရယ်စရာကောင်းတယ်။ 'ကျွန်တော်က ဘဏ်လုပ်ငန်းရှင်ဖြစ်ဖူးပေမယ့် အတိုးနည်းသွားတယ်'

Because ‘interest’ is a pun. It has two meanings. 

ဆိုတော့ 'အတိုး' က စာလုံးတစ်လုံးပါ။ အဓိပ္ပါယ်နှစ်မျိုးရှိသည်။

First meaning, he's not interested  in the banking business anymore. 

ပထမ အဓိပ္ပါယ်က ဘဏ်လုပ်ငန်းကို စိတ်မဝင်စားတော့ဘူး။

And the second meaning, he lost some money. Okay. 

ဒုတိယ အဓိပ္ပါယ်မှာ သူသည် ငွေအနည်းငယ် ဆုံးရှုံးခဲ့သည်။ ဟုတ်ပြီ

All right, let's move on to one last one.]

ကောင်းပြီ၊ နောက်ဆုံးတစ်ခုဆီ ဆက်သွားကြရအောင်။]

All right, the last joke.

ကောင်းပြီ၊ နောက်ဆုံးဟာသ။

I'm going to show you actually has two puns.

မင်းမှာ စာလုံးနှစ်လုံးရှိတယ်ဆိုတာ ငါပြမယ်။

And you can decide if it's funny or not.

ပြီးတော့ အဲဒါက ရယ်စရာလား၊ မဟုတ်ဘူးလားဆိုတာ သင် ဆုံးဖြတ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

All right, here's the joke.

ကောင်းပြီ၊ ဒီမှာဟာသ။

So there's a question and answer.

ဒီတော့ အမေးနဲ့ အဖြေရှိတယ်။

The question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’

'နာမည်ကြီးတွေက ဘယ်လို အေးအေးဆေးဆေး နေလဲ' ဆိုတဲ့ မေးခွန်းပါ။

‘How do celebrities stay cool?’

'နာမည်ကြီးတွေက ဘယ်လို အေးအေးဆေးဆေး နေနေကြတာလဲ။'

Of course, celebrities are  famous people, stars, talents.

ဟုတ်ပါတယ်၊ ထင်ရှားကျော်ကြားသူတွေ၊ ကြယ်ပွင့်တွေ၊ အရည်အချင်းတွေပါ။

‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘They have many fans.’

'နာမည်ကြီးတွေက ဘယ်လို အေးအေးဆေးဆေး နေနေကြတာလဲ။' 'သူတို့မှာ ပရိသတ်တွေ အများကြီးရှိတယ်။'

Okay that's the joke.

အိုကေ အဲဒါဟာသပဲ။

And as I said, there's actually two puns.

ငါပြောသလိုပဲ၊ တကယ်တော့ စာလုံးနှစ်လုံးရှိတယ်။

So the question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ Okay. 

ဒီတော့ 'နာမည်ကြီးတွေက အေးအေးဆေးဆေး ဘယ်လိုနေမလဲ' ဆိုတဲ့ မေးခွန်းပါ။ ဟုတ်ပြီ

So cool has two meanings. The first meaning is cool, cold. 

အေး အဓိပ္ပါယ်က နှစ်မျိုးရှိတယ်။ ပထမအဓိပ္ပါယ်က အေး၊ အေး။

Okay. Not hot not warm. So how do they stay cold? 

ဟုတ်ပြီ မပူဘူး မပူဘူး။ ဒါဆို သူတို့ ဘယ်လို အေးနေကြမလဲ။

The second meaning is, cool, you know  wearing sunglasses, they're cool. 

ဒုတိယ အဓိပ္ပာယ်ကတော့ အေးတယ်၊ နေကာမျက်မှန်တပ်ထားတယ်၊ မိုက်တယ်။

All right. Very good. Very cool. So the two meanings of cool. 

ကောင်းပါပြီ။ အလွန်ကောင်းသည်။ အရမ်းမိုက်တယ်။ ဒီတော့ အဓိပ္ပါယ် နှစ်ခုက အေးတယ်။

They have many fans of course. There's the pun. 

သူတို့မှာ ပရိသတ်တွေ အများကြီးရှိတာပေါ့။ အဲဒီမှာ စာလုံးပေါင်း။

And the pun has two meanings. The first meaning is fan. 

ပြီးတော့ စာလုံးက အဓိပ္ပါယ်နှစ်မျိုးရှိတယ်။ ပထမ အဓိပ္ပါယ်က Fan ပါ။

When you're hot, you have the machine blowing air. That's the fan. 

နေပူတဲ့အခါ လေမှုတ်စက် ပါပါတယ်။ ဒါပဲဟေ့။

And of course, the other meaning, the second  meaning of fan is, when you're very famous  

နောက်တစ်ခုက Fan ရဲ့ ဒုတိယအဓိပ္ပာယ်က မင်းအရမ်းနာမည်ကြီး

and popular people like you, they're your fans. They're screaming.

ပြီး မင်းလိုလူကြိုက်များတဲ့အခါ သူတို့က မင်းရဲ့ပရိသတ်တွေပဲ။ အော်ဟစ်နေကြတယ်။

And they want your signature, your autograph. Those are fans. 

ပြီးတော့ သူတို့က မင်းရဲ့ လက်မှတ်၊ မင်းရဲ့ လက်မှတ် လိုချင်တယ်။ အဲဒါတွေက ပရိသတ်တွေပါ။

Okay. So, ‘How do a celebrities stay cool?’ 

ဟုတ်ပြီ ဒီတော့ 'နာမည်ကြီးတွေက ဘယ်လို အေးအေးဆေးဆေး နေနေကြတာလဲ။'

‘They have many fans.’ All right. 

'သူတို့မှာ ပရိသတ်တွေ အများကြီးရှိတယ်။' ကောင်းပါပြီ။

So this is funny because we can  recognize there's two meanings here. 

ဤနေရာတွင် အဓိပ္ပါယ်နှစ်ခုရှိသည်ကို ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ သိရှိနိုင်သောကြောင့် ရယ်စရာကောင်းပါသည်။

So you could read this the first way, ‘How do celebrities stay cool (not hot)?’ 

ဒါကြောင့် 'နာမည်ကြီးတွေက ဘယ်လိုအေးမြနေလဲ (မပူဘူး)' ဆိုတဲ့ ပထမနည်းကို ဖတ်ကြည့်နိုင်ပါတယ်။

‘They have many fans,’  machines blowing at them to stay cool. 

'သူတို့မှာ ပရိတ်သတ်တွေ အများကြီးရှိတယ်' လို့ လေမှုတ်စက်တွေက အေးအေးဆေးဆေးနေဖို့။

Or ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘They have many fans,’ people screaming. 

ဒါမှမဟုတ် 'နာမည်ကြီးတွေက ဘယ်လို အေးအေးဆေးဆေး နေနေကြတာလဲ။' 'သူတို့မှာ ပရိသတ်တွေ အများကြီးရှိတယ်' လို့ လူတွေက အော်ဟစ်ကြပါတယ်။

All right. Funny?

ကောင်းပါပြီ။ ရယ်စရာလား?

Okay, yeah, well, these are pun jokes. Some people like them - very advanced English. 

ကောင်းပြီ၊ ဟုတ်တယ်၊ အဲဒါတွေက ဟာသတွေပဲ။ တစ်ချို့လူတွေက အင်္ဂလိပ်လို အလွန်အဆင့်မြင့်ပါတယ်။

Okay because you have to know, you have to have  a very good vocabulary, you have to know the word  

ကောင်းပြီ၊ မင်းသိထားရမှာက မင်းမှာ အရမ်းကောင်းတဲ့ ဝေါဟာရတစ်ခုရှိရမယ်၊ စကားလုံးကို သိရမယ်

and it's two meanings to understand the joke.

၊ ဟာသကို နားလည်ဖို့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်နှစ်ခုရှိတယ်။
