Okay. Now puns are very difficult to understand.

Very difficult to hear. And very difficult to use. 

ಕೇಳಲು ತುಂಬಾ ಕಷ್ಟ. ಮತ್ತು ಬಳಸಲು ತುಂಬಾ ಕಷ್ಟ.

So this video is an advanced video  and I don't expect my students to

Now, what is a pun?

. ಈಗ, ಶ್ಲೇಷೆ ಎಂದರೇನು?

Well, a ‘pun’ is kind of a word used in a joke. And the word has two meanings. 

ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು, 'ಪನ್' ಎನ್ನುವುದು ತಮಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸುವ ಪದವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳಿವೆ.

Okay. So to help you,  

ಸರಿ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಿಮಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲು,

we're just going to jump into an example. And I have a very simple example here. 

ನಾವು ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಮತ್ತು ನಾನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸರಳ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

‘Korea has Soul’

'ಕೊರಿಯಾಗೆ ಆತ್ಮವಿದೆ'

This is a pun.

ಇದು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆ.

The word that is a pun is soul because  soul has two meanings of course. 

ಶ್ಲೇಷೆಯ ಪದವು ಆತ್ಮವಾಗಿದೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಆತ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳಿವೆ.

Now, when I say Korea has soul, this is s o u l. That soul means, Korea has some  

ಈಗ, ಕೊರಿಯಾಗೆ ಆತ್ಮವಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಇದು ಸೌ ಎಲ್. ಆ ಆತ್ಮ ಎಂದರೆ, ಕೊರಿಯಾಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ

spirit or some energy.

ಚೈತನ್ಯ ಅಥವಾ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಇದೆ.

But of course it has another meaning.

ಆದರೆ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಇದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.

Because, soul, the spelling is  different but the sound is the same.

ಏಕೆಂದರೆ, ಆತ್ಮ, ಕಾಗುಣಿತವು ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿದೆ ಆದರೆ ಧ್ವನಿ ಒಂದೇ ಆಗಿದೆ.

Seoul is a city in Korea. So when we say ‘Korea has soul’, it's kind  

ಸಿಯೋಲ್ ಕೊರಿಯಾದ ಒಂದು ನಗರ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾವು 'ಕೊರಿಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಆತ್ಮವಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಅದು ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ

of a joke because the ‘soul’ has two meanings. Okay. 

ತಮಾಷೆಯಾಗಿದೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ 'ಆತ್ಮ'ಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳಿವೆ. ಸರಿ.

Now pun jokes are kind of not really haha funny.

ಈಗ ಪನ್ ಜೋಕ್‌ಗಳು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಹಾಹಾ ತಮಾಷೆಯಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.

Usually when someone says a pun joke, everyone is kind of quiet.

ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಪನ್ ಜೋಕ್ ಹೇಳಿದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಸುಮ್ಮನಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

And maybe we hear crickets. 

ಮತ್ತು ಬಹುಶಃ ನಾವು ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತೇವೆ.

So if I said ‘Korea has soul’,  maybe everyone's oh yeah. 

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ 'ಕೊರಿಯಾಗೆ ಆತ್ಮವಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಹೇಳಿದರೆ, ಬಹುಶಃ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಓಹ್ ಹೌದು.

Okay. All right. So let's take a look at a couple other  

ಸರಿ. ಸರಿ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ

examples of pun jokes to help you understand.

I have two more examples here to help you understand the pun jokes. Okay. 

ಪನ್ ಜೋಕ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ನಿಮಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲು ನಾನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಎರಡು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಸರಿ.

The jokes, they use a pun. Again, they're not really haha funny. 

ಹಾಸ್ಯಗಳು, ಅವರು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮತ್ತೆ, ಅವರು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಹಾಹಾ ತಮಾಷೆಯಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.

You just kind of okay.

ನೀವು ಕೇವಲ ರೀತಿಯ ಸರಿ.

So the next one here.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದಿನದು.

‘My bicycle fell… my bicycle  fell because it's two-tired.’ 

'ನನ್ನ ಸೈಕಲ್ ಬಿದ್ದಿದೆ... ಎರಡು ಸುಸ್ತಾಗಿರುವ ಕಾರಣ ನನ್ನ ಸೈಕಲ್ ಬಿದ್ದಿದೆ.'

‘My bicycle fell because it's two-tired.’ All right. 

'ಎರಡು ದಣಿದ ಕಾರಣ ನನ್ನ ಸೈಕಲ್ ಬಿದ್ದಿದೆ.' ಸರಿ.

So the blue word, that's the pun. And again, a pun has two meanings. 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನೀಲಿ ಪದ, ಅದು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಮತ್ತೆ, ಒಂದು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.

So why is this funny? or not so funny?

ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಇದು ಏಕೆ ತಮಾಷೆಯಾಗಿದೆ? ಅಥವಾ ತುಂಬಾ ತಮಾಷೆಯಾಗಿಲ್ಲವೇ?

Too tired. Alright. So again, two meanings. 

ತುಂಬಾ ದಣಿದ. ಸರಿ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮತ್ತೆ, ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳು.

The first meaning, my bicycle has ‘two tires’. Okay. 

ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಥ, ನನ್ನ ಸೈಕಲ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ 'ಎರಡು ಟೈರ್'ಗಳಿವೆ. ಸರಿ.

The front tire and the back tire. So has only two tires. 

ಮುಂಭಾಗದ ಟೈರ್ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಟೈರ್. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕೇವಲ ಎರಡು ಟೈರ್ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.

So it fell. But there's also a second meaning. 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದು ಬಿದ್ದಿತು. ಆದರೆ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಥವೂ ಇದೆ.

It's ‘two tired’ sounds like t-o-o, very tired. So a bicycle fell because it's very tired. 

ಇದು 'ಎರಡು ದಣಿದ' ತುಂಬಾ ದಣಿದಂತೆ ಧ್ವನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ತುಂಬಾ ಸುಸ್ತಾಗಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸೈಕಲ್ ಬಿದ್ದಿದೆ.

Alright. So ‘two tired’ sounds like ‘too tired’. 

ಸರಿ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ 'ಎರಡು ದಣಿದ' ಶಬ್ದವು 'ತುಂಬಾ ಸುಸ್ತಾಗಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ತೋರುತ್ತದೆ.

And too tired, very tired. Alright. 

ಮತ್ತು ತುಂಬಾ ದಣಿದ, ತುಂಬಾ ದಣಿದ. ಸರಿ.

So that's what makes the pun funny. There's two meanings. 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇದು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆಯನ್ನು ತಮಾಷೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳಿವೆ.

The next one - 

ಮುಂದಿನದು -

‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’ ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’

'ನಾನು ಬ್ಯಾಂಕರ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದೆ ಆದರೆ ನಾನು ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡೆ.' 'ನಾನು ಬ್ಯಾಂಕರ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದೆ ಆದರೆ ನಾನು ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡೆ.'

Okay. This is the pun. 

ಸರಿ. ಇದು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆ.

This word has two meanings. The first meaning is ‘interest’ - I'm interested. 

ಈ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳಿವೆ. ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಥ 'ಆಸಕ್ತಿ' - ನಾನು ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

Okay. So he lost interest. 

ಸರಿ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವರು ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡರು.

He's no longer interested in banking. So he's not a banker anymore. 

ಅವರು ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕಿಂಗ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವರು ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕರ್ ಅಲ್ಲ.

That's one meaning.

ಅದೊಂದು ಅರ್ಥ.

A second meaning is

ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಥವೆಂದರೆ

‘interest’ is actually a bank term bank.

'ಬಡ್ಡಿ' ಎಂಬುದು ವಾಸ್ತವವಾಗಿ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕ್ ಟರ್ಮ್ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕ್ ಆಗಿದೆ.

Bank vocabulary - when you put money in the bank.

ಬ್ಯಾಂಕ್ ಶಬ್ದಕೋಶ - ನೀವು ಬ್ಯಾಂಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿದಾಗ.

Okay. Every year the bank will give you interest. 

ಸರಿ. ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕ್ ನಿಮಗೆ ಬಡ್ಡಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ.

For example, six percent or 4 percent. They give you interest every year. 

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, ಆರು ಪ್ರತಿಶತ ಅಥವಾ 4 ಪ್ರತಿಶತ. ಅವರು ನಿಮಗೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷ ಬಡ್ಡಿಯನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

So he's not a banker anymore  because he lost interest. 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವನು ಬಡ್ಡಿಯನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವನು ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕರ್ ಅಲ್ಲ.

Which would mean he lost money. All right. 

ಇದರರ್ಥ ಅವನು ಹಣವನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡನು. ಸರಿ.

So this is funny. ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest’ 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇದು ತಮಾಷೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. 'ನಾನು ಬ್ಯಾಂಕರ್ ಆಗಿದ್ದೆ ಆದರೆ ನಾನು ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡೆ'

Because ‘interest’ is a pun. It has two meanings. 

ಏಕೆಂದರೆ 'ಬಡ್ಡಿ' ಒಂದು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳಿವೆ.

First meaning, he's not interested  in the banking business anymore. 

ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಥ, ಅವರು ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕಿಂಗ್ ವ್ಯವಹಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿಲ್ಲ.

And the second meaning, he lost some money. Okay. 

ಮತ್ತು ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಥ, ಅವರು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡರು. ಸರಿ.

All right, let's move on to one last one.]

ಸರಿ, ಕೊನೆಯದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗೋಣ.]

All right, the last joke.

ಸರಿ, ಕೊನೆಯ ತಮಾಷೆ.

I'm going to show you actually has two puns.

ನಾನು ನಿಮಗೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಎರಡು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆಗಳಿವೆ ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸಲಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

And you can decide if it's funny or not.

ಮತ್ತು ಇದು ತಮಾಷೆಯಾಗಿದೆಯೇ ಅಥವಾ ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನೀವು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಬಹುದು.

All right, here's the joke.

So there's a question and answer.

The question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’

ಸೆಲೆಬ್ರಿಟಿಗಳು ಕೂಲ್ ಆಗಿ ಇರೋದು ಹೇಗೆ?'

‘How do celebrities stay cool?’

'ಸೆಲೆಬ್ರಿಟಿಗಳು ಕೂಲ್ ಆಗಿ ಇರೋದು ಹೇಗೆ?'

Of course, celebrities are  famous people, stars, talents.

ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ, ಸೆಲೆಬ್ರಿಟಿಗಳು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳು, ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಗಳು, ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗಳು.

‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘They have many fans.’

'ಸೆಲೆಬ್ರಿಟಿಗಳು ಕೂಲ್ ಆಗಿ ಇರೋದು ಹೇಗೆ?' ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅನೇಕ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

Okay that's the joke.

ಸರಿ ಅದು ಜೋಕ್.

And as I said, there's actually two puns.

ಮತ್ತು ನಾನು ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ, ವಾಸ್ತವವಾಗಿ ಎರಡು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆಗಳಿವೆ.

So the question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ Okay. 

ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಸೆಲೆಬ್ರಿಟಿಗಳು ಕೂಲ್ ಆಗಿ ಇರೋದು ಹೇಗೆ?' ಸರಿ.

So cool has two meanings. The first meaning is cool, cold. 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ತಂಪಾದ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಥ ತಂಪಾದ, ಶೀತ.

Okay. Not hot not warm. So how do they stay cold? 

ಸರಿ. ಬಿಸಿಯಾಗಿಲ್ಲ, ಬೆಚ್ಚಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಅವರು ಹೇಗೆ ತಣ್ಣಗಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ?

The second meaning is, cool, you know  wearing sunglasses, they're cool. 

ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಥವೆಂದರೆ, ತಂಪಾಗಿದೆ, ಸನ್ಗ್ಲಾಸ್ ಧರಿಸುವುದು ನಿಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದೆ, ಅವರು ತಂಪಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

All right. Very good. Very cool. So the two meanings of cool. 

ಸರಿ. ತುಂಬಾ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು. ಬಹಳ ತಂಪಾದ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ತಂಪಾದ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳು.

They have many fans of course. There's the pun. 

ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿಯೇ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಶ್ಲೇಷೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

And the pun has two meanings. The first meaning is fan. 

ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ಲೇಷೆಗೆ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳಿವೆ. ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಥ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿ.

When you're hot, you have the machine blowing air. That's the fan. 

ನೀವು ಬಿಸಿಯಾಗಿರುವಾಗ, ನೀವು ಗಾಳಿಯನ್ನು ಬೀಸುವ ಯಂತ್ರವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೀರಿ. ಅದು ಅಭಿಮಾನಿ.

And of course, the other meaning, the second  meaning of fan is, when you're very famous  

ಮತ್ತು ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅರ್ಥವೆಂದರೆ, ಫ್ಯಾನ್‌ನ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಥ, ನೀವು

and popular people like you, they're your fans. They're screaming.

And they want your signature, your autograph. Those are fans.

Okay. So, ‘How do a celebrities stay cool?’

‘They have many fans.’ All right.

So this is funny because we can  recognize there's two meanings here. 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇದು ತಮಾಷೆಯಾಗಿದೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ನಾವು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಬಹುದು.

So you could read this the first way, ‘How do celebrities stay cool (not hot)?’ 

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನೀವು ಇದನ್ನು ಮೊದಲ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಬಹುದು, 'ಸೆಲೆಬ್ರಿಟಿಗಳು ಹೇಗೆ ತಂಪಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ (ಹಾಟ್ ಅಲ್ಲ)?'

‘They have many fans,’  machines blowing at them to stay cool.
