And in this video we are  going to talk about ‘puns’. 

이번 영상에서는 '말장난'에 대해 이야기해보겠습니다.

Okay. Now puns are very difficult to understand. 

좋아요. 이제 말장난은 이해하기가 매우 어렵습니다.

Very difficult to hear. And very difficult to use. 

듣기가 매우 어렵습니다. 그리고 사용하기가 매우 어렵습니다.

So this video is an advanced video  and I don't expect my students to

start making their own puns very soon. So this video is more for fun just to understand

Now, what is a pun?

. 자, 말장난이란 무엇입니까?

Well, a ‘pun’ is kind of a word used in a joke. And the word has two meanings. 

음, '말장난'은 농담에 사용되는 일종의 단어입니다. 그리고 그 단어에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다.

Okay. So to help you,  

좋아요. 그래서 여러분을 돕기 위해

we're just going to jump into an example. And I have a very simple example here. 

예시를 들어보겠습니다. 여기에 아주 간단한 예가 있습니다.

‘Korea has Soul’

'한국에는 영혼이 있다'

This is a pun.

이것은 말장난이다.

The word that is a pun is soul because  soul has two meanings of course. 

말장난인 단어는 영혼입니다. 영혼에는 물론 두 가지 의미가 있기 때문입니다.

Now, when I say Korea has soul, this is s o u l. That soul means, Korea has some  

자, 한국에 영혼이 있다고 하면 이것이 바로 sou l입니다. 그 영혼은 한국에

spirit or some energy.

정신이나 에너지가 있다는 뜻입니다.

But of course it has another meaning.

하지만 물론 다른 의미도 있습니다.

Because, soul, the spelling is  different but the sound is the same.

왜냐하면 영혼은 철자가 다르지만 소리는 동일하기 때문입니다.

Seoul is a city in Korea. So when we say ‘Korea has soul’, it's kind  

서울은 한국의 도시이다. 그래서 우리가 '한국에는 영혼이 있다'고 말할 때

of a joke because the ‘soul’ has two meanings. Okay. 

'영혼'에는 두 가지 의미가 있기 때문에 일종의 농담 입니다 . 좋아요.

Now pun jokes are kind of not really haha funny.

이제 말장난 농담은 별로 웃기지 않습니다. 하하.

Usually when someone says a pun joke, everyone is kind of quiet.

보통 누군가가 말장난 농담을 하면 모두가 조용합니다.

And maybe we hear crickets. 

그리고 귀뚜라미 소리가 들릴 수도 있습니다.

So if I said ‘Korea has soul’,  maybe everyone's oh yeah. 

그래서 내가 '한국에는 영혼이 있다'고 말하면 아마 모두가 '오예'일 것이다.

Okay. All right. So let's take a look at a couple other  

좋아요. 괜찮은. 그럼

examples of pun jokes to help you understand.

I have two more examples here to help you understand the pun jokes. Okay.

The jokes, they use a pun. Again, they're not really haha funny. 

농담은 말장난을 사용합니다. 다시 말하지만, 정말 재미없네요 하하.

You just kind of okay.

당신은 좀 괜찮아요.

So the next one here.

그럼 다음은 여기요.

‘My bicycle fell… my bicycle  fell because it's two-tired.’ 

'자전거가 넘어졌어요… 자전거가 두 바퀴가 되어 넘어졌어요.'

‘My bicycle fell because it's two-tired.’ All right. 

'자전거가 너무 지쳐서 넘어졌습니다.' 괜찮은.

So the blue word, that's the pun. And again, a pun has two meanings. 

파란색 단어는 말장난입니다. 그리고 말장난에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다.

So why is this funny? or not so funny?

그럼 이게 왜 웃기는 걸까요? 아니면 별로 웃기지 않아?

Too tired. Alright. So again, two meanings. 

너무 피곤. 괜찮은. 다시 두 가지 의미가 있습니다.

The first meaning, my bicycle has ‘two tires’. Okay. 

첫 번째 의미는 내 자전거에는 '타이어 2개'가 있다는 것입니다. 좋아요.

The front tire and the back tire. So has only two tires. 

앞 타이어와 뒷 타이어입니다. 그래서 타이어가 2개밖에 없습니다.

So it fell. But there's also a second meaning. 

그래서 떨어졌습니다. 하지만 두 번째 의미도 있습니다.

It's ‘two tired’ sounds like t-o-o, very tired. So a bicycle fell because it's very tired. 

'두 피곤하다'도 너무 피곤한 것 같네요. 그래서 자전거가 너무 피곤해서 넘어졌습니다.

Alright. So ‘two tired’ sounds like ‘too tired’. 

괜찮은. 그래서 '두 피곤하다'는 '너무 피곤하다'처럼 들립니다.

And too tired, very tired. Alright. 

그리고 너무 피곤해요, 아주 피곤해요. 괜찮은.

So that's what makes the pun funny. There's two meanings. 

그래서 그것이 말장난을 재미있게 만드는 것입니다. 두 가지 의미가 있습니다.

The next one - 

다음 -

‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’ ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’

'저는 원래 은행원이었지만 흥미를 잃었습니다.' '저는 은행원이었지만 흥미를 잃었습니다.'

Okay. This is the pun. 

좋아요. 이것이 말장난이다.

This word has two meanings. The first meaning is ‘interest’ - I'm interested. 

이 단어에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다. 첫 번째 의미는 '관심'입니다. 관심이 있어요.

Okay. So he lost interest. 

좋아요. 그래서 그는 흥미를 잃었습니다.

He's no longer interested in banking. So he's not a banker anymore. 

그는 더 이상 은행 업무에 관심이 없습니다. 그래서 그는 더 이상 은행원이 아닙니다.

That's one meaning.

그것은 하나의 의미입니다.

A second meaning is

두 번째 의미는

‘interest’ is actually a bank term bank.

'이자'가 실제로 은행 용어인 은행이라는 것입니다.

Bank vocabulary - when you put money in the bank.

Okay. Every year the bank will give you interest. 

좋아요. 매년 은행에서 이자를 지급합니다.

For example, six percent or 4 percent. They give you interest every year. 

예를 들어 6% 또는 4%입니다. 매년 이자를 줍니다.

So he's not a banker anymore  because he lost interest. 

그래서 그는 관심을 잃었기 때문에 더 이상 은행가가 아닙니다.

Which would mean he lost money. All right.

So this is funny. ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest’

Because ‘interest’ is a pun. It has two meanings.

First meaning, he's not interested  in the banking business anymore.

And the second meaning, he lost some money. Okay.

All right, let's move on to one last one.]

All right, the last joke.

자, 마지막 농담입니다.

I'm going to show you actually has two puns.

실제로 두 가지 말장난이 있다는 것을 보여 드리겠습니다.

And you can decide if it's funny or not.

그리고 그것이 재미있는지 아닌지를 결정할 수 있습니다.

All right, here's the joke.

좋아요, 농담이에요.

So there's a question and answer.

그래서 질문과 답변이 있습니다.

The question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’

'연예인은 어떻게 쿨함을 유지하는가?'라는 질문.

‘How do celebrities stay cool?’

'연예인들은 어떻게 쿨함을 유지하는가?'

Of course, celebrities are  famous people, stars, talents.

물론 연예인은 유명한 사람이고, 스타이고, 재능 있는 사람이다.

‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘They have many fans.’

'연예인들은 어떻게 쿨함을 유지하는가?' '그들은 팬이 많아요.'

Okay that's the joke.

알았어 농담이야.

And as I said, there's actually two puns.

제가 말했듯이 실제로 두 가지 말장난이 있습니다.

So the question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ Okay. 

그래서 '연예인은 어떻게 쿨함을 유지하는가?'라는 질문이 생긴다. 좋아요.

So cool has two meanings. The first meaning is cool, cold. 

So Cool에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다. 첫 번째 의미는 차갑다, 차갑다입니다.

Okay. Not hot not warm. So how do they stay cold? 

좋아요. 뜨겁지 않고 따뜻하지 않습니다. 그러면 그들은 어떻게 차갑게 지내나요?

The second meaning is, cool, you know  wearing sunglasses, they're cool. 

두 번째 의미는 '멋져요, 선글라스를 끼면 멋있어요'입니다.

All right. Very good. Very cool. So the two meanings of cool. 

괜찮은. 매우 좋은. 아주 멋지다. 그래서 쿨의 두 가지 의미.

They have many fans of course. There's the pun. 

물론 팬도 많습니다. 말장난이 있습니다.

And the pun has two meanings. The first meaning is fan. 

그리고 말장난에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다. 첫 번째 의미는 팬입니다.

When you're hot, you have the machine blowing air. That's the fan. 

더울 때는 기계에서 공기를 불어넣는 경우가 있습니다. 그 팬이에요.

And of course, the other meaning, the second  meaning of fan is, when you're very famous  

그리고 물론, 팬의 또 다른 의미, 두 번째 의미는 당신이

and popular people like you, they're your fans. They're screaming.

당신처럼 매우 유명하고 인기 있는 사람들이라면, 그들은 당신의 팬이라는 것입니다. 그들은 비명을 지르고 있습니다.

And they want your signature, your autograph. Those are fans. 

그리고 그들은 당신의 서명과 사인을 원합니다. 그들은 팬입니다.

Okay. So, ‘How do a celebrities stay cool?’

‘They have many fans.’ All right.

So this is funny because we can  recognize there's two meanings here.

So you could read this the first way, ‘How do celebrities stay cool (not hot)?’

‘They have many fans,’  machines blowing at them to stay cool. 

'그들은 팬이 많습니다.' 기계가 그들에게 바람을 불어 시원함을 유지합니다.

Or ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘They have many fans,’ people screaming. 

혹은 '연예인들은 어떻게 쿨함을 유지하는가?' 사람들은 '그들 팬이 많아요'라고 소리쳤다.

All right. Funny?

괜찮은. 재미있는?

Okay, yeah, well, these are pun jokes. Some people like them - very advanced English. 

그래, 그래, 글쎄, 이건 말장난 농담이야. 어떤 사람들은 아주 고급 영어를 좋아합니다.

Okay because you have to know, you have to have  a very good vocabulary, you have to know the word  

좋아, 왜냐하면 알아야 하고, 아주 좋은 어휘를 가지고 있어야 하고, 단어를 알아야

and it's two meanings to understand the joke.

하고, 농담을 이해하려면 두 가지 의미가 있어야 하기 때문이다.
