And in this video we are  going to talk about ‘puns’.

Okay. Now puns are very difficult to understand. 

ঠিক আছে. এখন শ্লেষ বোঝা খুব কঠিন।

Very difficult to hear. And very difficult to use. 

শুনতে খুব কষ্ট হয়। এবং ব্যবহার করা খুব কঠিন।

So this video is an advanced video  and I don't expect my students to

start making their own puns very soon. So this video is more for fun just to understand

a little bit of English word play.

Now, what is a pun?

। এখন, একটি শ্লেষ কি?

Well, a ‘pun’ is kind of a word used in a joke. And the word has two meanings. 

ওয়েল, একটি 'শ্লেষ' হল একটি রসিকতায় ব্যবহৃত একটি শব্দ। আর শব্দের দুটি অর্থ আছে।

Okay. So to help you,  

ঠিক আছে. তাই আপনাকে সাহায্য করার জন্য,

we're just going to jump into an example. And I have a very simple example here. 

আমরা শুধু একটি উদাহরণে ঝাঁপ দিতে যাচ্ছি। এবং আমি এখানে একটি খুব সহজ উদাহরণ আছে.

‘Korea has Soul’

'কোরিয়ার আত্মা আছে'

This is a pun.

এটি একটি শ্লেষ।

The word that is a pun is soul because  soul has two meanings of course. 

শ্লেষ শব্দটি হল আত্মা কারণ আত্মার অবশ্যই দুটি অর্থ রয়েছে।

Now, when I say Korea has soul, this is s o u l. That soul means, Korea has some  

এখন, যখন আমি বলি কোরিয়ার আত্মা আছে, এটি হল আত্মা। সেই আত্মা মানে, কোরিয়ার কিছু

spirit or some energy.

আত্মা বা কিছু শক্তি আছে।

But of course it has another meaning.

Because, soul, the spelling is  different but the sound is the same.

কারণ, আত্মা, বানান ভিন্ন কিন্তু ধ্বনি একই।

Seoul is a city in Korea. So when we say ‘Korea has soul’, it's kind  

সিউল কোরিয়ার একটি শহর। তাই যখন আমরা বলি 'কোরিয়ার আত্মা আছে', এটা এক ধরনের

of a joke because the ‘soul’ has two meanings. Okay. 

রসিকতা কারণ 'আত্মা'-এর দুটি অর্থ আছে। ঠিক আছে.

Now pun jokes are kind of not really haha funny.

এখন শ্লেষ কৌতুক সত্যিই হাহা মজার ধরনের না.

Usually when someone says a pun joke, everyone is kind of quiet.

সাধারণত কেউ যখন শ্লেষ কৌতুক বলে, তখন সবাই শান্ত হয়।

And maybe we hear crickets. 

এবং সম্ভবত আমরা ক্রিকেট শুনতে.

So if I said ‘Korea has soul’,  maybe everyone's oh yeah. 

তাই আমি যদি বলি 'কোরিয়ার আত্মা আছে', তাহলে হয়তো সবারই ওহ হ্যাঁ।

Okay. All right. So let's take a look at a couple other  

ঠিক আছে. ঠিক আছে. তাই আসুন

examples of pun jokes to help you understand.

I have two more examples here to help you understand the pun jokes. Okay. 

শ্লেষ কৌতুক বুঝতে সাহায্য করার জন্য আমি এখানে আরো দুটি উদাহরণ আছে. ঠিক আছে.

The jokes, they use a pun. Again, they're not really haha funny. 

কৌতুক, তারা একটি শ্লেষ ব্যবহার. আবার, তারা সত্যিই হাহা মজার না.

You just kind of okay.

আপনি ঠিক ধরনের.

So the next one here.

তাই এখানে পরের এক.

‘My bicycle fell… my bicycle  fell because it's two-tired.’ 

'আমার সাইকেল পড়ে গেছে... আমার সাইকেল পড়ে গেছে কারণ এটি দুই-টায় ক্লান্ত।'

‘My bicycle fell because it's two-tired.’ All right. 

'আমার সাইকেল পড়ে গেছে কারণ এটি দুই-টায় ক্লান্ত।' ঠিক আছে.

So the blue word, that's the pun. And again, a pun has two meanings. 

তাই নীল শব্দ, যে শ্লেষ. এবং আবার, একটি শ্লেষ দুটি অর্থ আছে.

So why is this funny? or not so funny?

তাহলে এই হাস্যকর কেন? নাকি এত মজার না?

Too tired. Alright. So again, two meanings. 

খুবই ক্লান্ত. ঠিক আছে. তাই আবার, দুটি অর্থ.

The first meaning, my bicycle has ‘two tires’. Okay. 

প্রথম অর্থ, আমার সাইকেলে 'দুই টায়ার' আছে। ঠিক আছে.

The front tire and the back tire. So has only two tires. 

সামনের টায়ার এবং পিছনের টায়ার। তাই মাত্র দুটি টায়ার আছে।

So it fell. But there's also a second meaning. 

তাই পড়ে গেল। কিন্তু একটি দ্বিতীয় অর্থ আছে.

It's ‘two tired’ sounds like t-o-o, very tired. So a bicycle fell because it's very tired. 

এটি 'দুই ক্লান্ত' শব্দের মতো, খুব ক্লান্ত। তাই একটি সাইকেল পড়ে গেছে কারণ এটি খুব ক্লান্ত।

Alright. So ‘two tired’ sounds like ‘too tired’. 

ঠিক আছে. তাই 'দুই ক্লান্ত' শোনায় 'খুব ক্লান্ত'।

And too tired, very tired. Alright. 

এবং খুব ক্লান্ত, খুব ক্লান্ত। ঠিক আছে.

So that's what makes the pun funny. There's two meanings. 

তাই যে শ্লেষ মজার করে তোলে কি. এর দুটি অর্থ আছে।

The next one - 

পরেরটি -

‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’ ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’

'আমি একজন ব্যাংকার ছিলাম কিন্তু আমি সুদ হারিয়েছি।' 'আমি ব্যাংকার ছিলাম কিন্তু আগ্রহ হারিয়ে ফেলেছি।'

Okay. This is the pun. 

ঠিক আছে. এই শ্লেষ.

This word has two meanings. The first meaning is ‘interest’ - I'm interested. 

এই শব্দের দুটি অর্থ আছে। প্রথম অর্থ হল 'সুদ' - আমি আগ্রহী।

Okay. So he lost interest. 

ঠিক আছে. তাই সে আগ্রহ হারিয়ে ফেলেছে।

He's no longer interested in banking. So he's not a banker anymore. 

তিনি আর ব্যাংকিংয়ে আগ্রহী নন। তাই তিনি আর ব্যাংকার নন।

That's one meaning.

এটি একটি অর্থ.

A second meaning is

একটি দ্বিতীয় অর্থ হল

‘interest’ is actually a bank term bank.

'সুদ' আসলে একটি ব্যাঙ্ক শব্দ ব্যাঙ্ক।

Bank vocabulary - when you put money in the bank.

ব্যাঙ্ক শব্দভান্ডার - যখন আপনি ব্যাঙ্কে টাকা রাখেন।

Okay. Every year the bank will give you interest. 

ঠিক আছে. প্রতি বছর ব্যাংক আপনাকে সুদ দেবে।

For example, six percent or 4 percent. They give you interest every year. 

উদাহরণস্বরূপ, ছয় শতাংশ বা 4 শতাংশ। তারা আপনাকে প্রতি বছর সুদ দেয়।

So he's not a banker anymore  because he lost interest. 

তাই তিনি আর ব্যাংকার নন কারণ তিনি সুদ হারিয়েছেন।

Which would mean he lost money. All right. 

যার অর্থ তিনি অর্থ হারিয়েছেন। ঠিক আছে.

So this is funny. ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest’ 

তাই এই মজার. 'আমি একজন ব্যাংকার ছিলাম কিন্তু আমি সুদ হারিয়েছি'

Because ‘interest’ is a pun. It has two meanings. 

কারণ 'সুদ' একটি শ্লেষ। এর দুটি অর্থ রয়েছে।

First meaning, he's not interested  in the banking business anymore. 

প্রথম অর্থ, তিনি আর ব্যাংকিং ব্যবসায় আগ্রহী নন।

And the second meaning, he lost some money. Okay. 

এবং দ্বিতীয় অর্থ, তিনি কিছু টাকা হারিয়েছেন। ঠিক আছে.

All right, let's move on to one last one.]

ঠিক আছে, চলুন এক শেষের দিকে এগিয়ে যাই।]

All right, the last joke.

ঠিক আছে, শেষ কৌতুক।

I'm going to show you actually has two puns.

And you can decide if it's funny or not.

All right, here's the joke.

So there's a question and answer.

Of course, celebrities are  famous people, stars, talents.

অবশ্যই, সেলিব্রিটিরা বিখ্যাত ব্যক্তি, তারকা, প্রতিভা।

‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘They have many fans.’

'সেলিব্রিটিরা কীভাবে শান্ত থাকে?' 'তাদের অনেক ভক্ত আছে।'

Okay that's the joke.

ঠিক আছে যে কৌতুক.

And as I said, there's actually two puns.

এবং আমি বলেছি, আসলে দুটি শ্লেষ আছে.

So the question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ Okay. 

তাই প্রশ্ন, 'সেলিব্রিটিরা কীভাবে শান্ত থাকে?' ঠিক আছে.

So cool has two meanings. The first meaning is cool, cold. 

তাই শীতল এর দুটি অর্থ আছে। প্রথম অর্থ শীতল, ঠান্ডা।

Okay. Not hot not warm. So how do they stay cold? 

ঠিক আছে. গরম না গরম না। তাহলে তারা কিভাবে ঠান্ডা থাকবে?

The second meaning is, cool, you know  wearing sunglasses, they're cool. 

দ্বিতীয় অর্থ হল, শীতল, আপনি সানগ্লাস পরতে জানেন, তারা দুর্দান্ত।

All right. Very good. Very cool. So the two meanings of cool. 

ঠিক আছে. খুব ভালো. খুব ঠান্ডা. তাই শীতল এর দুটি অর্থ।

They have many fans of course. There's the pun. 

তাদের অবশ্যই অনেক ভক্ত আছে। শ্লেষ আছে.

And the pun has two meanings. The first meaning is fan. 

এবং শ্লেষের দুটি অর্থ রয়েছে। প্রথম অর্থ পাখা।

When you're hot, you have the machine blowing air. That's the fan. 

যখন আপনি গরম হন, তখন আপনার কাছে মেশিনটি বাতাস ফুঁকছে। সেই পাখা।

And of course, the other meaning, the second  meaning of fan is, when you're very famous  

এবং অবশ্যই, অন্য অর্থ, ফ্যান এর দ্বিতীয় অর্থ হল, আপনি যখন আপনার

and popular people like you, they're your fans. They're screaming.

মতো খুব বিখ্যাত এবং জনপ্রিয় মানুষ হন, তারা আপনার ভক্ত। তারা চিৎকার করছে।

And they want your signature, your autograph. Those are fans. 

এবং তারা আপনার স্বাক্ষর, আপনার অটোগ্রাফ চায়। তারা ভক্ত.

Okay. So, ‘How do a celebrities stay cool?’ 

ঠিক আছে. তাহলে, 'কীভাবে একজন সেলিব্রিটি শান্ত থাকে?'

‘They have many fans.’ All right. 

'তাদের অনেক ভক্ত আছে।' ঠিক আছে.

So this is funny because we can  recognize there's two meanings here. 

সুতরাং এটি মজার কারণ আমরা চিনতে পারি এখানে দুটি অর্থ আছে।

So you could read this the first way, ‘How do celebrities stay cool (not hot)?’

‘They have many fans,’  machines blowing at them to stay cool.

Okay, yeah, well, these are pun jokes. Some people like them - very advanced English. 

ঠিক আছে, হ্যাঁ, ওয়েল, এগুলো শ্লেষ কৌতুক। কিছু লোক তাদের পছন্দ করে - খুব উন্নত ইংরেজি।

Okay because you have to know, you have to have  a very good vocabulary, you have to know the word  

ঠিক আছে কারণ আপনাকে জানতে হবে, আপনার একটি খুব ভাল শব্দভান্ডার থাকতে হবে, আপনাকে শব্দটি

and it's two meanings to understand the joke.
