How to Read and Write a Poem | Learn English Poetry with Homework

Hello, students. This is a very special English lesson.

I’m going to teach you to read a basic poem.

基本的な詩の読み方を教えます。

Also, I’m going to teach you how to write a basic poem yourself.

また、基本的な詩を自分で書く方法も教えます。

And learning about poetry will help you improve your English speaking and writing abilities.

So what is a poem?

It's an arrangement of words written or spoken.

書かれたり話したりされた言葉の配列です。

They usually rhyme.

They are a great way to express your experiences, ideas, or emotions, in an artful way.

So, why do we write poetry?

Because poetry is beautiful and I want to share that beauty with you.

Here is my poem. I wrote it.

これが私の詩です。私はそれを書きました。

So let's look at my poem and I’ll read it now.

それでは、私の詩を見てみましょう。今から読みます。

“In the morning, when I’m alone, I like to watch the sun rise up.

「朝、一人でいるとき、太陽が昇るのを見るのが好きです。

I play soft music on my phone, I drink fresh coffee from my cup.

携帯電話でソフトな音楽を再生し、カップで淹れたてのコーヒーを飲みます。

The sun is shining fresh and bright, The sky outside is clear and blue,

太陽はさわやかに輝いています、外の空は青く澄んでいます、

My mind is calm, My heart is light,

Today will be a good day, too.”

今日も良い日になるでしょう。」

So this is a short poem.

ということで、これは短い詩です。

And I want to teach you about rhyme.

そして韻についても教えたいと思います。

‘rhyme’ in poetry.

詩における「韻」。

So let's look at the last words of each line.

それでは、各行の最後の言葉を見てみましょう。

“alone” “alone”

「alone」「alone」

Does it rhyme with the word "up"?

「up」と韻を踏みますか？

“alone” “up” No.

「alone」「up」 No.

Rhyming words have a similar sound.

韻を踏む言葉は音が似ています。

So “alone” and “up” don't rhyme

つまり、「alone」と「up」は韻を踏みません

but “alone” and “phone” do rhyme.

が、「alone」と「phone」は韻を踏みます。

“alone” and “phone” have a similar sound.

「alone」と「phone」は音が似ています。

And “up” and “cup” have a similar sound.

そして、「up」と「cup」は音が似ています。

So this is the rhyme scheme, or the rhyme pattern of this poem.

これがこの詩の韻の仕組み、つまり韻のパターンです。

This poem has different rhyming words, so we're going to call

この詩には韻を踏む単語が異なるので、

“alone” rhyme A

「一人」を韻 A

and “up” is rhyme B.

、「上」を韻 B と 呼びます。

And “phone” is A.

そして「電話」が A です。

And...

そして...

“cup” is B.

「カップ」 が B です。

“alone” “up” “phone” “cup”

「電話」 「カップ」

This is our rhyme pattern or our rhyme scheme.

これが私たちの韻パターンまたは韻スキームです。

And in the next part, it's very similar.

そして次の部分でも、それは非常に似ています。

“bright” and “blue” don't rhyme

「bright」と「blue」は韻を踏みません

but “bright” rhymes with “light”

and “blue” rhymes with “too”

these are new words we'll label them

So these are our rhyming patterns for this poem.

Not all poems have to rhyme.

But it's very nice when they do.

It's something good to try.

It's traditional.

So this is our rhyme and our rhyming pattern.

これが私たちの韻であり、韻を踏むパターンです。

And also, in poems we need a stanza.

また、詩にはスタンザが必要です。

This poem has two stanzas, or two parts.

この詩には 2 つの節、つまり 2 つの部分があります。

So a stanza is a part of a poem.

したがって、スタンザは詩の一部です。

This is part one. This is part two.

これはパート 1 です。これはパート 2 です。

Some poems have many many stanzas but this poem has only two.

いくつかの詩には多くのスタンザがありますが、この詩には 2 つしかありません。

A stanza can be two lines long.

スタンザの長さは 2 行にすることができます。

But my stanzas are four lines.

しかし、私のスタンザは4行です。

And you can write as many as you want.

But a simple poem will be one or two stanzas.

しかし、簡単な詩なら 1 節か 2 節になります。

Also, in my poem, there are many images, there are many pictures of things.

また、私の詩にはたくさんのイメージ、物事の写真がたくさんあります。

When you write a poem you want to add some images.

詩を書くときは、いくつかのイメージを追加したいと思います。

It says, “I like to watch the sun rise up,”

「太陽が昇るのを見るのが好きです」とありますが、

“The sun” is an image.

「太陽」はイメージです。

“I play soft music on my phone, ” “The phone” is an image.

「携帯電話でソフトな音楽を流している」「電話」というのはイメージです。

“I drink fresh coffee from my cup, ” “cup” is an image.

「カップで淹れたてのコーヒーを飲む」「カップ」はイメージです。

So when you write a poem, maybe you can put in some pictures of things.

ですから、詩を書くときに、物事の写真をいくつか入れることができるかもしれません。

Also when you finish adding your images,

また、画像の追加が完了したときに、

if you want to add some repeating words to your poem.

詩に繰り返しの単語を追加したい場合にも使用できます。

Do you see any repeating words in my poem?

私の詩の中に繰り返し使われている単語があるでしょうか?

I think the word ‘I’ repeats.

「私」という言葉が繰り返されると思います。

“I like to watch” “I play music”

「見るのが好きです」 「音楽をかけてます」

“I drink fresh coffee” “I... I... I...”

「淹れたてのコーヒーを飲みます」 「私は…私は…私は…」

And in other places, too.

そして他の場所でも。

“My mind is calm” “My heart is light”

「私の心は穏やかです」 「私の心は軽いです」

So repeating words are also beautiful in a poem.

このように繰り返される言葉も詩の中では美しいのです。

You don't have to repeat words,

言葉を繰り返す必要はありません

but they make the poem more lovely.

が、言葉を繰り返すことで詩がより素敵になります。

So that is our images and our repeating words.

それが私たちのイメージであり、私たちが繰り返す言葉です。

So are… uh… so our images were

それもそうです…ええと、私たちのイメージは

“sun”

「太陽」

and “phone”

と「電話」

and “cup”.

と「カップ」でした。

And there's one more thing a poem needs that this poem does not have.

そして、この詩にはない、詩に必要なものがもうひとつあります。

A poem needs a title.

詩にはタイトルが必要です。

So when we write a poem, we want to start with the main idea.

したがって、詩を書くときは、メインのアイデアから始めたいと思います。

And the main idea can also be our title.

そして、メインのアイデアがタイトルになることもあります。

So I want to choose an easy main idea for this poem.

そこで、この詩の簡単なメインアイデアを選びたいと思います。

Let's go with “Summer”.

「夏」でいきましょう。

“Summer” is a great title,

「夏」というのは素晴らしいタイトルな

so I will write the word ‘Summer’ here.

ので、ここでは「夏」という言葉を書きます。

So if our title is “Summer,” let's think about some images that go with summer.

タイトルが「夏」なら、夏に合う画像を考えてみましょう。

I think we all think about the sun in summer.

誰もが夏の太陽について考えると思います。

So what rhymes with “sun,” everybody? “sun” rhymes with “ton”.

では、皆さん、「太陽」と韻を踏むものは何でしょうか？ 「サン」は「トン」と韻を踏みます。

Rhymes with “one”. Rhymes with “run”.

「一」と韻を踏みます。 「走る」と韻を踏みます。

But I think I want to choose “fun”.

でも、私は「楽しい」を選びたいと思っています。

“sun” and “fun” can be my rhymes.

「太陽」と「楽しい」が私の韻になります。

But also, when it's hot outside, what do you want?

でも、外が暑いときは何がしたいですか？

I usually want to drink something cold. I want to drink soda or an icy drink.

普段は冷たいものを飲みたいと思っています。ソーダか冷たい飲み物が飲みたいです。

So my first line, I think will be about drinking something cold.

だから私の最初のセリフは、冷たいものを飲むことについてだと思います。

There we go.

それでは行きます。

“Cool soda can,”

「冷たいソーダ缶」

‘Cool soda can,’ is my first line.

「冷たいソーダ缶」が私の最初のセリフです。

And second line, I want to end on that word “sun”.

そして 2 行目は「太陽」という言葉で終わりたいと思います。

“Cool soda can, hot summer sun,”

「冷たいソーダ缶、暑い夏の太陽」

So we have the cool drink and the hot weather.

暑い気候と冷たい飲み物があります。

But our next rhyming word “can” - and what rhymes with “can”?

しかし、次の韻を踏む単語「can」、そして「can」と韻を踏むものは何でしょうか?

“tan” and “ran” and “man”

「タン」と「ラン」と「マン」

So let's try the word “plan”.

それでは、「計画」という言葉を試してみましょう。

“Hot summer sun,...

「暑い夏の日差し、...

no special plan,”

特別な計画はありません。」

“Cool soda can, hot summer sun, no special plan,”

「冷たいソーダ缶、暑い夏の太陽、特別な計画はありません。」

But…

でも...

but we're having fun.

でも、私たちは楽しんでいます。

So do you remember the rhyme scheme?

それで、韻を踏むスキームを覚えていますか？

“can” and “plan” rhyme

「can」と「plan」は韻を踏み

and “sun” and “fun” rhyme,

、「sun」と「fun」は韻を

so we can mark our rhyme scheme A B A B

“can,” “plan,”

「can」、「plan」、

and “sun,” “fun.”

And you might notice that at the end of some of my lines, I have commas.

And at the end of the last line, I have a period.

This is because when you write a poem, it's okay to be unstructured.

詩を書くときは、構造化されてなくても大丈夫だからです。

It's okay to change the rules.

So in my poem, I begin with capital letters and I end with commas and a period,

したがって、私の詩では大文字で始まり、コンマとピリオドで終わりますが、そうする

but you don't have to.

必要はありません。

You can break the rules of grammar and the rules of punctuation when you write a poem.

詩を書くときは、文法の規則や句読点の規則を破ることができます。

So this is a how many stanzas poem?

It's a one stanza poem.

一節の詩です。

And I think that all of you can definitely write a one stanza poem.
