I've just made myself a cup of tea

Tocmai mi-am facut o ceasca de ceai.

and I should do some housework soon

si trebuie sa fac niste treaba in curand,

but, it got me thinking about two words

dar asta m-a facut sa ma gandesc la doua cuvinte

that many students find very difficult to use.

pe care foarte multi elevi gasesc ca e extrem de greu sa le foloseasca.

Today, I want to talk to you about 'make' and 'do'.

Azi mi-as dori sa va spun despre verbele 'to make' (a face) si 'to do' (a face)

So why are these words so difficult to use?

Deci de ce sunt aceste cuvinte atat de greu de utilizat?!?

The answer is that both words have very similar meanings

Raspuns: pentru ca ambele cuvinte au intelesuri foarte foarte apropiate (a face un lucru si a face o treaba)

and, in many languages

in timp ce in multe alte limbi straine

they use just one word

este folosit doar un singur cuvant pentru 'a face' (o chestie sau o treaba/actiune)...

like 'hacer' in Spanish

cam cum e verbul HACER din spaniola!

So what is the main difference?

Deci care este diferenta de baza intre cele doua verbe "a face" ('to do' si 'to make') ?

Well with 'make' you are creating something

Asadar, 'make' inseamna crearea unui lucru

that didn't exist before

ce nu a existat inainte

Whilst with 'do' you're completing a task

asta in timp ce 'to do' exprima completarea unui TASK (unei trebi)

that already exists

care deja exista...este deja in uz.

there are always exceptions

So things that we can create from scratch:

Cafeaua sau Ceaiul: sa-ti 'make' o ceasca?

An offer: I'd like to make you an offer.

Oferta: vreau sa iti 'make' o oferta

Can I make a suggestion?

Pot sa-ti 'make' o sugestie???

Alright, but only if you make me a promise.

Desigur, insa doar daca imi 'make' o promisiune!

Also: I think I've made a mistake.

In plus: cred ca ai 'make'-uit o greseala!

I'd like to make a complaint!

Most things to do with business go with make

Tot ceea ce are a face cu afacerile (business-ul) este exprimat cu ajutorul verbului 'to make' !!!

for example: profit and loss

de exemplu profit si pierderi

Last month I made a loss

Luna trecuta am 'make'-uit o pierdere...

but this month I want to make a profit.

insa luna asta vreau sa make-uiesc un profit!

You can also make an investment into somebody else's business.

Poti de asemeni sa make-uiesti o investitie in afacerea altcuiva!

If you're sure that your football team is going to win

In cazul in care stii ca echipa ta de fotbal o sa castige

It could be an idea to make a bet on them

N-ar fi rau sa make-uiesti un pariu pe respectiva echipa!

to try and earn some extra cash

incercand astfel sa castigi niste banuti in plus...

And also, if things go really well for you

Si daca treburile merg bine de tot

and you earn a lot of money

si castigi o gramada de bani

you will have made a fortune.

vei fi make-uit o avere...

Now let's talk about 'do'.

Haideti acum sa discutam verbul 'to do'

I've already told you that 'do' is when you complete a task that already exists

Deja v-am spus ca 'to do' este folosit atunci cand un TASK (sau treaba) deja existenta in viata de zi cu zi este dusa la bun sfarsit (completata)...

For example: every night I do my homework.

Cum ar fi: imi do-uiesc temele in fiecare seara...

Next week I have to do a test.

Saptamana viitoare trebuie sa do-uiesc un test

In science we did experiments.

La stiinte exacte am do-facut experimente.

I hope I don't have to do any interviews soon!

Sper sa nu trebuiasca sa do-uiesc niciun interviu prea curand...

Next summer, I think I'll do a language course.

Vara viitoare, cred ca voi do-uuii un curs de limba straina.

Housework chores are tasks, and that's an important one to remember

Treaba ce tine de Teme Pentru Acasa sunt TASK-uri si asta trebuie tinuta minte!

I hate doing the shopping.

Urasc sa do-uiesc cumparaturile...

I don't mind doing the dishes

Nu ma supar daca trebuie sa do-uiesc vesela...

but I loathe (and that means really hate)

doing the ironing.

You can also do well or badly at something

Poti in acelasi timp sa do-uiesti bine sau prost atunci cand faci un lucru...

I did badly in an exam last summer, so now I have to do it again.

You can do bad or good.

Poti sa do-uiesti bine sau rau...

Doing good is doing something positive

Do-uuitul bine este a face ceva pozitiv.

If you eat healthily, you do yourself good.

Daca mananci in mod sanatos, iti do-uiesti tie insuti un bine.

You also do your best, or do your worst.

Poti sa te do-uiesti (straduiesti) cat mai bine posibil, sau ... sa do-uiesti rau de tot (s-o faci praf)

If you run a race, you should do your best

Daca alergi intr-o competitie, ar trebui sa te do-uiesti (sa te straduiesti) sa faci cea mai buna performanta

to try and achieve the best possible time.

It's exception time and unfortunately

there are many exceptions to do with 'do' and 'make'.

avem foarte mult EXCEPTII care au de-a face (au de do-uuit) cu verbele 'to do' si 'to make'

However, have you ever heard the phrase

Cu toate acestea, daca ai avut de-a face vreodata cu propozitia

'Pleasure doing business with you'?

"Mi-a parut bine sa DO-uiesc afaceri impreuna'?

Business, just the word, goes with do.

cuvantul BUSINESS se potriveste cu verbul 'to do'

We do business with someone.

Do-UUIM bunsiness cu cineva...

I also said that housework and chores go with do.

Am mai zis ca treburile casei si alte chestii ce tin de facut treaba in general se potrivesc cu verbul 'to do'.

But when I get up in the morning I should make my bed.

Dar atunci cand ma trezesc in fiecare dimineata, imi MAKE-uiesc patul...

I also said that make was to do with creation

Am mai zis ca verbul 'to make' are a face cu CREATIA

So we create art, right?
