I've just made myself a cup of tea

저는 방금 티 한잔을 탔어요.

and I should do some housework soon

그리고 이제 곧 몇가지 집안일을 해야하죠.

but, it got me thinking about two words

근데, 많은 학생들이 어려움을 느끼게 하는

that many students find very difficult to use.

두 개의 단어에 대한 생각을 멈출 수가 없네요.

Today, I want to talk to you about 'make' and 'do'.

오늘은 'make'와 'do'에 대해서 말씀드리고 싶어요.

So why are these words so difficult to use?

자 그럼, 우리는 왜 이 두 단어들이 어렵다고 느끼는 걸까요?

The answer is that both words have very similar meanings

정답은 바로 두 단어가 매우 비슷한 의미를 가지고 있기 때문인데요.

and, in many languages

다른 언어들에서는

they use just one word

단 하나의 단어로 쓰고 있는데 말이에요.

like 'hacer' in Spanish

스페인어의 'hacer*' 처럼요. (*만들다, 하다는 뜻)

So what is the main difference?

그럼 가장 주요한 차이점은 뭘까요?

Well with 'make' you are creating something

'make'는 이전에 존재하지 않았던 무언가를 만들어 내는 걸 표현 할 때 쓰여요. (Make something from scratch)

that didn't exist before

Whilst with 'do' you're completing a task

반면에, 'do'는 이미 존재하는 무언가를 완료하기 위해 하는 것을 표현할 때 쓰여요. (do some tasks for completing)

that already exists

Now please remember

하지만, 기억해주세요.

as with all English concepts

영어에는 항상 예외가 있어요.

there are always exceptions

and I will talk about those after I've explained the most important parts.

그래서 가장 중요한 부분에 대한 설명을 끝내고 그 예외들에 대한 얘기를 할거에요.

So things that we can create from scratch:

자 그럼, 없던 것을 만들어내는 경우부터 살펴보죠

A coffee or tea: shall I make you one?

커피나 차, 제가 한 잔 타드릴까요? (make a tea)

An offer: I'd like to make you an offer.

제안, 당신에게 제안을 하나 드리고 싶습니다. (make an offer)

Can I make a suggestion?

제안 하나 해도 될까요? (make a suggestion)

Alright, but only if you make me a promise.

알겠습니다. 하나만 약속해준다면요. (make a promise)

Also: I think I've made a mistake.

또 내 생각에 실수 한 것 같아요. (make a mistake)

I'd like to make a complaint!

컴플레인 하고 싶습니다. (make a complaint)

Who's making that noise?

누가 시끄럽게 하는거야? (make noise)

I've made a really important discovery.

제가 정말 중요한 발견을 했어요. (make a discovery)

Most things to do with business go with make

대부분 비즈니스에서 하는 것들은 'make'를 사용해요.

for example: profit and loss

예를 들어, 이익과 손실.

Last month I made a loss

저번달에 저는 손실을 봤습니다. (make a loss)

but this month I want to make a profit.

그러나 이번달에는 이익을 내고 싶어요.(make a profit)

You can also make an investment into somebody else's business.

또한 다른 누군가의 비즈니스에서 투자를 할 수 있죠. (make an investment)

If you're sure that your football team is going to win

만약 당신의 축구팀이 이길 것이라고 확실한다면

It could be an idea to make a bet on them

그들이 이기는데에 내기를 하는 것도 좋은 아이디어가 될 수 있겠죠. (make a bet)

to try and earn some extra cash

약간의 용돈을 벌기 위해 말이죠.

And also, if things go really well for you

그리고 또, 일이 꽤 잘 풀려서

and you earn a lot of money

많은 돈을 벌게 되면,

you will have made a fortune.

부를 축적하게 될거에요. (make a fortune)

Now let's talk about 'do'.

이젠 'do'에 대해서 얘기해 봐요.

I've already told you that 'do' is when you complete a task that already exists

벌써 말씀드렸지만, 'do'는 이미 존재하는 일을 완료할 때 쓰여요.

For example: every night I do my homework.

예를 들어, 매일 밤 저는 숙제를 합니다. (do my homework)

Next week I have to do a test.

다음 주에는 시험을 쳐야해요. (do a test)

In science we did experiments.

과학계에선, 우린 실험을 했어요. (do experiments)

I hope I don't have to do any interviews soon!

당분간 어떤 인터뷰도 하지 않았으면 좋겠어요! (do interviews)

Next summer, I think I'll do a language course.

내년 여름엔 언어 코스를 들을 것 같아요. (do a language course)

Housework chores are tasks, and that's an important one to remember

집안일들은 업무죠, 꼭 기억해두세요.

I hate doing the shopping.

저는 쇼핑하는 것을 싫어해요. (doing the shopping)

I don't mind doing the dishes

설거지 하는 것은 괜찮은데, (doing the dishes)

but I loathe (and that means really hate)

다림질 하는 것은 정말 싫어요. (*loathe는 정말 싫어한다는 의미)

doing the ironing.

You can also do well or badly at something

그리고 당신은 무언가를 정말 잘 했거나, 못 했을 수 있겠죠.

I did badly in an exam last summer, so now I have to do it again.

작년 여름에 시험을 잘 못봐서, 이번에 다시 봐야만 해요. (do badly in an exam)

You can do bad or good.

나쁜 일을 하거나 좋은 일을 할 수도 있죠.

Doing good is doing something positive

'Doing good'은 긍정적인 일을 하는 거에요.

If you eat healthily, you do yourself good.

만약 건강하게 먹는다면, 스스로에게 좋은 일을 하는거에요. (do yourself good)

You also do your best, or do your worst.

뭔가에 최선을 다할 수도 있지만, 망쳐 버릴 수도 있죠. (do your best, do your worst)

If you run a race, you should do your best

달리기 경주를 한다면, 당신은 최선을 다해야 할거에요.

to try and achieve the best possible time.

가능한 최선의 결과를 위해서 말이죠.

It's exception time and unfortunately

이제 예외에 대해 말씀드릴 시간이에요.

안타깝게도 'do'와 'make'에는 많은 예외가 있어요.

there are many exceptions to do with 'do' and 'make'.

I told you that most things to do with money and business

아까 대부분의 돈과 비즈니스에는

go with make

'make'가 온다고 했었죠.

However, have you ever heard the phrase

그런데, 이런 표현 들어본적 있나요?

'Pleasure doing business with you'?

'당신과 함께 일할 수 있어서 좋았습니다.' (do business)

Business, just the word, goes with do.

'Business' 단어 자체는 'do'와 함께 쓰입니다.

We do business with someone.

우리는 누군가와 비즈니스를 하죠. (do business)

I also said that housework and chores go with do.

그리고 집안일은 'do'를 사용한다고 했는데,

But when I get up in the morning I should make my bed.

그러나 아침에 일어나면 침대 정리를 해야하죠. (make my bed)

I also said that make was to do with creation

또한 'make'는 창작의 의미로 쓰인다고 했는데,

So we create art, right?

우린 아트를 창작하잖아요, 그렇죠?

Wrong! We do a drawing.

틀렸어요! 우리는 그림을 그려요. (do a drawing)

And finally, girls, hair and make-up.

그리고 마지막으로 여성분들, 머리와 화장.

I do my hair, and I also do my make-up.

저는 머리를 해요, 그리고 메이크업을 하죠. (do my hair, do my make-up)

Ooh! Sorry! Just doing my lipstick.

오, 죄송해요! 립스틱 바르고 있었어요. (doing my lipstick)

Um, that's it for 'make' or 'do'.

음, 이것이 'make' 와 'do'의 전부에요.
