我剛剛替自己做 (made) 了一杯茶，

and I should do some housework soon

我待會應該要去做 (do) 家事，

but, it got me thinking about two words

但，這讓我想到了這兩個

that many students find very difficult to use.

許多學生會很難分辨使用時機的單字。

Today, I want to talk to you about 'make' and 'do'.

今天我想要跟你們聊聊關於「Make」和「Do」的用法，

So why are these words so difficult to use?

所以，為什麼這兩個字如此的難分辨使用時機呢？

The answer is that both words have very similar meanings

答案是因為這兩個字的意思非常相近，

and, in many languages

而且，在許多的語言中，

they use just one word

都是使用同一個單字去表達，

like 'hacer' in Spanish

像西班牙文中的「Hacer」。

So what is the main difference?

所以，最主要的差別在哪裡呢？

Well with 'make' you are creating something

嗯，「Make」代表你創造了

that didn't exist before

一些之前不存在的東西，

Whilst with 'do' you're completing a task

而「Do」代表你完成了

that already exists

一個之前已經存在的任務。

Now please remember

請記得：

as with all English concepts

在英文中，

there are always exceptions

總是會有例外。

and I will talk about those after I've explained the most important parts.

在說明完最重要的部分後，我才會說明這些例外狀況。

So things that we can create from scratch:

所以這些是我們可以創造出來的：

A coffee or tea: shall I make you one?

「咖啡或是茶？想要我做 (make) 一杯給你嗎？」

An offer: I'd like to make you an offer.

「一個提議：我想要做 (make) 一個提議給你。」

Can I make a suggestion?

「我可以做 (make) 一個建議嗎？」

Alright, but only if you make me a promise.

「好吧，但除非你對我做 (make) 出承諾。 」

Also: I think I've made a mistake.

「而且，我想我做 (made) 了一個錯誤。」

I'd like to make a complaint!

「我想要做 (make) 一個申訴！」

Who's making that noise?

「是誰製造 (making) 那個噪音？」

I've made a really important discovery.

「我做 (made) 了一個重大發現。」

Most things to do with business go with make

大部份，和商業有關的字都使用「Make」。

for example: profit and loss

例如：「利益」與「損失」

Last month I made a loss

「上個月我的投資產生 (made) 虧損了，

but this month I want to make a profit.

但這個月，我想要製造 (make) 收益。」

You can also make an investment into somebody else's business.

「你也可以對他人的生意做 (make) 投資。」

If you're sure that your football team is going to win

「如果你確信你支持的足球隊將會贏得比賽，

It could be an idea to make a bet on them

有可能會想在他們身上做 (make) 賭注，

to try and earn some extra cash

看是否能賺一些額外的錢。

And also, if things go really well for you

然後，如果事情發展得非常順利，

and you earn a lot of money

你可以賺到很多錢，

you will have made a fortune.

你就會製造 (made) 一筆財富。」

Now let's talk about 'do'.

現在我們來談談「Do」，

I've already told you that 'do' is when you complete a task that already exists

我剛剛已經有提到，「Do」是用在當你完成某個已經存在的任務。

For example: every night I do my homework.

例如：「我在每天晚上做 (do) 我的作業。」

Next week I have to do a test.

「下禮拜我必須要做 (do) 一個測驗。」

In science we did experiments.

「我們在化學/科學課做 (did) 實驗。」

I hope I don't have to do any interviews soon!

「我希望我不會需要做 (do) 很多面試。」

Next summer, I think I'll do a language course.

「明年夏天，我想我將會去參加 (do) 語言課程。」

Housework chores are tasks, and that's an important one to remember

需要記得，家事也算是任務，這很重要。

I hate doing the shopping.

「我討厭做 (doing) 採購。」

I don't mind doing the dishes

「我不介意去洗 (doing) 碗盤，

but I loathe (and that means really hate)

我『愛死』了」（意思你厭惡洗碗盤）

doing the ironing.

「燙 (doing) 衣服」

You can also do well or badly at something

也可以用在形容做 (do) 好或壞某件事情， * do well / do badly

I did badly in an exam last summer, so now I have to do it again.

「我去年夏天的考試做 (do) 的不好， 我現在必須再做一次。」

You can do bad or good.

你可以做 (do) 不好的或有益的。 *do bad / do good

Doing good is doing something positive

「Doing good」是代表做正向、好的事，

If you eat healthily, you do yourself good.

「如果你吃得健康，會對你的身體好。」

You also do your best, or do your worst.

你也可以做 (do) 最好的自己，或最差的自己。 *do your best / do your worst

If you run a race, you should do your best

「如果你賽跑，你應該發揮全力做 (do) 到最好，

to try and achieve the best possible time.

去嘗試並且完成最好的成果。」

It's exception time and unfortunately

現在是講解例外的時間，

there are many exceptions to do with 'do' and 'make'.

很不幸地，在使用「do」和「make」時， 有非常的多的例外。

I told you that most things to do with money and business

我剛剛提到，大多數關於金錢和商業的，

go with make

都是使用「make」，

However, have you ever heard the phrase

然而，你有聽過

'Pleasure doing business with you'?

「非常開心能和你做 (doing) 生意」的用法嗎？

Business, just the word, goes with do.

在「Business 生意」這個字上，會使用「do」，

We do business with someone.

我們和某人做 (do) 生意。

I also said that housework and chores go with do.

我也說過，家事雜務是使用「do」，

But when I get up in the morning I should make my bed.

但是當我早上起床，我應該要整理 (make) 我的床。

I also said that make was to do with creation

我也說過，「Make」是做創造，

So we create art, right?

所以我們創造藝術，沒錯吧？

Wrong! We do a drawing.

錯！我們畫畫（do a drawing)。

And finally, girls, hair and make-up.

最後，女孩們，頭髮與化妝的部分，

I do my hair, and I also do my make-up.

「我做 (do) 了我的頭髮，而且我也做(do) 了化妝。」

Ooh! Sorry! Just doing my lipstick.

「噢，抱歉，只是在畫我的口紅。」
