I've just made myself a cup of tea

「ちょうど今紅茶を作ったところなんだけど

and I should do some housework soon

すぐ家事をしなきゃならないの。」

but, it got me thinking about two words

この文から、学生の多くが 使い方を難しいと感じる

that many students find very difficult to use.

2つの単語について考えることができるわ。

Today, I want to talk to you about 'make' and 'do'.

今日は、そんな’make'と’do'という 2つについて話そうと思うの。

So why are these words so difficult to use?

じゃあ、なぜこの二つの単語はそんなに使い方が 難しく感じるんだか分かるかな？

The answer is that both words have very similar meanings

正解は、どちらも似た意味を持っているから。

and, in many languages

多くの言語では

一つの単語で一つの意味を表すよね。

they use just one word

スペイン語の'hacer'みたいに。

like 'hacer' in Spanish

So what is the main difference?

じゃあこの2つの大きな違いはなんでしょう？

Well with 'make' you are creating something

'make'はこれまでに存在していなかった物を

that didn't exist before

創り出すという意味。

Whilst with 'do' you're completing a task

一方で、'do'はすでに存在しているタスクを

that already exists

完了させることを意味しているの。

Now please remember

でも覚えておいて欲しいのは、

as with all English concepts

全ての英語の考え方には

there are always exceptions

いつも例外があるってこと。

and I will talk about those after I've explained the most important parts.

一番重要なことを説明したら、 その例外にも触れていくね。

So things that we can create from scratch:

では、私たちが創り出すことのできる物。

A coffee or tea: shall I make you one?

例えばコーヒーや紅茶。 「コーヒーか紅茶を作りましょうか？」

An offer: I'd like to make you an offer.

申し出。 「私はあなたに申し出をしたいです。」

Can I make a suggestion?

「提案してもいいですか？」

Alright, but only if you make me a promise.

「いいですよ、でもあなたが 約束を守った場合に限ってです。」

Also: I think I've made a mistake.

それから、 「私は間違いをおかしてしまったと思う。」

I'd like to make a complaint!

「苦情を言いたいんですが！」

Who's making that noise?

「誰がこんな音を出しているの？」

I've made a really important discovery.

「私は本当に重要な発見をしたんです。」

Most things to do with business go with make

ビジネス関係のことには ほとんどmakeが使われるの。

for example: profit and loss

例えば、利益と損失。

Last month I made a loss

「先月私は損失を出しました。 しかし今月は利益を出したいと思います。」

but this month I want to make a profit.

You can also make an investment into somebody else's business.

それから、あなたは誰かのビジネスに投資をする (make an investment)ことができるわ。

If you're sure that your football team is going to win

もしあなたのフットボールチームが 勝つと確信できるんだったら

It could be an idea to make a bet on them

小遣い稼ぎのために

そのチームに賭けてみる(make a bet) っていう考えもありね。

to try and earn some extra cash

And also, if things go really well for you

そして、もし全てがすごくいい方向にいくなら、

and you earn a lot of money

あなたはたくさんお金を稼いで

you will have made a fortune.

莫大な財産を築く(make a fortune)でしょうね。

Now let's talk about 'do'.

さあ、では'do'について話そうかな。

I've already told you that 'do' is when you complete a task that already exists

すでに話した通り、'do'は すでに存在するタスクを完了させるときに 使われるの。

For example: every night I do my homework.

例えば。 「毎晩私は宿題をします。」

Next week I have to do a test.

「来週テストを受ける必要があります。」

In science we did experiments.

「理科で実験をしました。」

I hope I don't have to do any interviews soon!

「近いうちに面接をせずに済みますように！」

Next summer, I think I'll do a language course.

「次の夏、語学のコースを取ろうと思います。」

Housework chores are tasks, and that's an important one to remember

家事はタスク。 それは覚えておかなければいけない重要なこと。

I hate doing the shopping.

「買い物をするのが嫌いです。」

I don't mind doing the dishes

「皿洗いは別に苦にはなりません。

but I loathe (and that means really hate)

でもアイロンがけをするのは大嫌いです。」

doing the ironing.

You can also do well or badly at something

ほかには、得意・不得意を 表すこともできるの。

I did badly in an exam last summer, so now I have to do it again.

「この間の夏のテストがうまくいかなかったから また受けなきゃいけない。」

You can do bad or good.

do badやdo goodという 使い方もできるのよ。

Doing good is doing something positive

doing goodは何かポジティブなことをすること。

If you eat healthily, you do yourself good.

「健康的な食事をすると、 あなた自身のためになります。」

You also do your best, or do your worst.

あとはdo your bestや do your worstのようにも使えるわ。

If you run a race, you should do your best

「もしレースに参加するなら、 最速のタイムを出すために

to try and achieve the best possible time.

ベストを尽くすべきです。」

It's exception time and unfortunately

例外タイムなんだけど 残念なことに

there are many exceptions to do with 'do' and 'make'.

'do'と'make'にたくさんの例外があるの。

I told you that most things to do with money and business

お金とビジネスに関わることには

ほとんどmakeが使われるって言ったけど

go with make

However, have you ever heard the phrase

こんなフレーズは聞いたことない？

'Pleasure doing business with you'?

「あなたと仕事ができて嬉しく思います」

Business, just the word, goes with do.

ビジネス、その言葉だけを使う場合は doと一緒に使われるの。

We do business with someone.

「私たちは誰かとビジネスを行います。」

I also said that housework and chores go with do.

あと、家事や雑用にもdoが使われるよ。

But when I get up in the morning I should make my bed.

でも、朝起きてしなきゃいけないのは make my bed（ベッドを整える）ね。

I also said that make was to do with creation

それから、makeは創り出されるものと 一緒に使われるという説明もしたよね。

So we create art, right?

artは創り出されるもの、そうよね？

Wrong! We do a drawing.

それが、不正解。 drawing（絵を描くこと）はdo。

And finally, girls, hair and make-up.

そして最後。 女の子たちはヘアセットとお化粧をするよね？

I do my hair, and I also do my make-up.

ヘアセットはdo my hairで お化粧はdo my make-upよ。

Ooh! Sorry! Just doing my lipstick.

あら！ごめん！ ちょっと口紅を塗ってた(do my lipstick)だけよ。
