who have selflessly and loyally accompanied me for 35 years

in founding, growing and developing in Venezuela

Since I was a boy,

in my early childhood,

I always wanted to be a musician,

and, thank God, I made it.

From my teachers, my family and my community,

stemmed the idea to make music

From the very first rehearsal, I saw the bright future ahead.

Because the rehearsal meant a great challenge to me.

I had received a donation of 50 music stands

എനിക്കു 50 മ്യുസിക്ക് സ്റ്റാന്ഡുകള് 100 കുട്ടികളുടെ

to be used by 100 boys in that rehearsal.

പരിശീലനത്തിനുവേണ്ടി ദാനമായി കിട്ടിയിരുന്നു.

When I arrived at the rehearsal, only 11 kids had shown up,

പക്ഷെ ഞാനവിടെയെത്തിയപ്പോള് ആകെ 11 കുട്ടികള് മാത്രമെ വന്നിരുന്നുള്ളൂ,

and I said to myself,

"Do I close the program or multiply these kids?"

I decided to face the challenge, and on that same night,

I promised those 11 children I'd turn our orchestra

Two months ago, I remembered that promise I made,

when a distinguished English critic

asking who could be the winner of the Orchestra World Cup.

He mentioned four great world orchestras,

and the fifth one was Venezuela's Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Today we can say

that art in Latin America

is no longer a monopoly of elites

This is why music is immensely important

in the awakening of sensibility, in the forging of values

and in the training of youngsters

Child: After all this time here,

JA: Each teenager and child in El Sistema has his own story,

and they are all important and of great significance to me.

Let me mention the case of Edicson Ruiz.

He is a boy from a parish in Caracas

കാരകാസ് ഇടവകയില്നിന്നുവരുന്ന ഇവന്,

who passionately attended to his double bass lessons

at the San Agustin's Junior Orchestra.

With his effort,

and the support of his mother, his family and his community,

The structure of El Sistema

is based on a new and flexible managing style

adapted to the features of each community and region,

and today attends to 300,000 children of the lower and middle class

all over Venezuela.

It's a program of social rescue

The effect of El Sistema is felt in three fundamental circles:

The music becomes a source

thus elevating the spirit

So, the emotional and intellectual profits are huge --

Mother Teresa of Calcutta

കല്ക്കട്ടയിലെ മദര് തെരേസ

insisted on something that always impressed me:

പലപ്പോഴും പറഞഒരുകാര്യം എന്നെ പലപ്പോഴും ചിന്തിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്

the most miserable and tragic thing about poverty

is not the lack of bread or roof,

provides him with a noble identity

and makes him a role model for his family and community.

It makes him a better student at school

because it inspires in him a sense of responsibility,

Within the family, the parents' support is unconditional.

The child becomes a role model for both his parents,

The large majority of our children belong, as I already mentioned,

The idea is that the families join with pride and joy

in the activities of the orchestras and the choirs

ബന്ധപ്പെടുന്ന ഓര്ക്കെസ്ട്രയുമായി

that their children belong to.

The huge spiritual world that music produces in itself,

സംഗീതം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന വലിയ അധ്യാത്മിക ലോകം

which also lies within itself,

അതിനുള്ളില് തന്നെ അന്തര്_ലീനമാണ്, അവരെ അവരുടെ

ends up overcoming material poverty.

ഭൌതീകമായ ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തില്നിന്നും അവര്ക്കു വിടുതിനല്കുന്നു.

From the minute a child's taught how to play an instrument,

ഒരുപകരണം പഠിക്കാനരംഭിക്കുന്ന നിമിഷം മുതലവന്

he's no longer poor.

ദരിദ്രനല്ലാതായിമാറുന്നു.

He becomes a child in progress heading for a professional level,

അവനൊരു പ്രൊഫെഷണല് വാദകനാവനുള്ള പടികള് കയറുകയും

who'll later become a full citizen.

Needless to say that music is the number one prevention

ഇനിയും കൂട്ടിചേര്ക്കേണ്ടതില്ല, സംഗീതം അവര് ലൈംഗീകത്തൊഴിലാളിയൊ

against prostitution, violence, bad habits,

കൊലപാതകിയൊ, ഹിംസകരും മോശം പ്രവര്ത്തികളിലും അതുപോലെ കുട്ടിയുടെ

and everything degrading in the life of a child.

ജീവിതത്തെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കിതീര്ക്കാവുന്ന എല്ലാകാര്യങ്ങളില് നിന്നുമുള്ള രക്ഷയാണ്.

A few years ago, historian Arnold Toynbee

കുറേവര്ഷങ്ങള്ക്കുമുന്പ് ആര്നോള്ഡ് ടൊയെന്ബീ പറഞ്ഞു

said that the world was suffering a huge spiritual crisis.

ലോകമിന്നൊരു ആദ്ധ്യാത്മികമായ പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലാണെന്നു.

Not an economic or social crisis, but a spiritual one.

സാമ്പത്തികമോ, സാമുഹികമോ അല്ല – പിന്നെയൊ ആദ്ധ്യാത്മികം.

I believe that to confront such a crisis,

ഞാന് വിചാരിക്കുന്നു, ഈ പ്രതിസന്ധിയെ തരണം ചെയ്യുവാന്

only art and religion can give proper answers to humanity,

നമുക്ക്, കലയ്ക്കും മതത്തിനും മാത്രമേ മനുഷ്യന്റെ അന്വേഷണങ്ങള്ക്കു

to mankind's deepest aspirations,

പൂറ്ണ്ണമായഉത്തരം നല്കാനാവൂ, മനുഷ്യകുലത്തിന്റെ

and to the historic demands of our times.

ഏറ്റവും അഭിലാഷങ്ങള്ക്കും നമ്മുടെ ഇന്നത്തെകാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെയുമാവശ്യമതാണ്.

Education -- the synthesis of wisdom and knowledge --

വിദ്ധ്യാഭ്യാസം അറിവിന്റെയും വിവേകത്തിന്റെയും സന്കലനമാകേണ്ടതുണ്ട്,

is the means to strive for a more perfect, more aware,

അങ്ങിനെ നമുക്കുകൂടുതല് പൂറ്ണ്ണതയും നിറവും, മഹത്താറ്ന്നതുമായൊരു

more noble and more just society.

സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഉയര്ച്ചക്കായി നമുക്കു പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാം.

but instead art at the service of society,

കലയെ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ സേവനത്തിനെത്തിക്കുകയും,

at the service of the weakest, at the service of the children,

ഏറ്റവും ദരിദ്രരായവരുടെയും, കുട്ടികളുടെയും, ബലഹീനരുടെയും

at the service of the sick, at the service of the vulnerable,

പറ്ശ്വവല്ക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടവരുടെയും എല്ലാം സഹയ്ത്തിനെത്തിക്കുകയും,

and at the service of all those who cry for vindication
