against your will?

It's violating.

ئه‌مه‌ برینداركه‌ره‌.

Feelings of fury, of assault

هه‌ست كردن به‌ شێتگیریی، به‌ هه‌ڕه‌شه‌

and of helplessness.

و بێ توانایی.

That's what corruption feels like.

گه‌نده‌ڵیی ئاوا هه‌ستی پێ ده‌كرێت.

Corruption is theft.

گه‌نده‌ڵیی دزی یه‌.

It is corrosive,

له‌ناوبه‌ره‌،

it is criminal,

تاوانباره‌،

it is toxic

ژه‌هره‌

and it is predatory.

و تاڵانه‌.

Now, I'm from Kenya,

ئێستا، من خه‌ڵكی كینیام،

and in Kenya, corruption takes different forms.

و له‌ كینیا گه‌نده‌ڵیی شێوه‌ی جیاواز وه‌رده‌گرێت.

I want to share the story of Karura Forest with you.

ده‌مه‌وێت باسی چیڕۆكی دارستانی كاڕۆڕاتان بۆ بكه‌م.

This is my hometown of Nairobi.

ئه‌مه‌ نایرۆبی یه‌ شوێنی له‌دایك بوونمه‌.

I love Nairobi. It's beautiful.

نایرۆبیم خۆشده‌وێت، جوانه‌.

But it is a city of paradoxes.

به‌ڵام شاری ناكۆكییه‌كانه‌.

It is at once beautiful

له‌ هه‌مان كاتدا جوان

and challenging.

و سه‌خته‌.

But at the heart of this beautiful city

به‌ڵام له‌ ناوه‌ڕستی ئه‌م شاره‌ جوانه‌

that I call home

كه‌ من ناوی ده‌نێم ماڵ

is Karura Forest,

دارستانی كاڕۆڕایه‌،

an oasis of green, expansive beauty that would be the envy of any city anywhere.

مێرگێك له‌ جوانیی سه‌وزی فراوان كه‌ ده‌بێت به‌ ئیره‌یی هه‌موو شارێك له‌ هه‌ر شوێنێك

We almost lost Karura Forest to corruption.

خه‌ریك بوو دارستانی كاڕۆڕا به‌ ته‌واویی له‌ ده‌ست بده‌ین به‌هۆی گه‌نده‌ڵیی.

Word has reached my mother, Wangari Maathai,

هه‌واڵه‌كه‌ گه‌یشتبووه‌ دایكم، وانگاری ماسایی،

that Karura Forest is under attack.

كه‌وا دارستانی كاڕۆڕا له‌ ژێر هێرشدایه‌.

There was a construction site coming up right in the middle of the forest.

شوێنێكی بنیاتنان هه‌بوو له‌ ناوه‌ڕاستی دارستانه‌كه‌ دروستده‌ كرا.

Government officials had stolen the forest.

به‌رپرسه‌ حكوومیی یه‌كان دارستانه‌كه‌یان دزی بوو.

They had divided, sold and gifted hundreds of parcels of Karura

هه‌ڵسابوون به‌ دابه‌ش كردن، فرۆشتن و به‌خشینی سه‌دان گورزه‌ی كاڕۆڕا

to their friends and cronies.

بۆ هاوڕێكانیان.

Now in 1977,

1له‌ ساڵی 977،

my mother founded the Green Belt Movement

دایكم جووڵه‌ی پشتێنه‌ی سه‌وزی دامه‌زراند

to plant trees across Kenya,

بۆ ڕواندنی دار له‌ ته‌واوی كینیا.

restore green spaces

گێڕانه‌وه‌ی ڕووبه‌ری سه‌وز

and protect green spaces, much like Karura Forest.

و پاراستنی ڕووبه‌ری سه‌وز، هه‌روه‌كو دارستانی كارۆرا.

She got together her friends and allies,

هاوڕێ و هاوكاره‌كانی كۆكرده‌وه‌،

and together, they created what became

و به‌یه‌كه‌وه‌، ئه‌وه‌یان دامه‌زراند كه‌ بووه‌

one of the most successful tree-planting campaigns in the world.

یه‌ك له‌ هه‌ره‌ سه‌ركه‌وتووترین كه‌مپینه‌كانی ڕواندنی دار له‌ جیهان.

It was therefore no surprise

له‌به‌ر ئه‌وه‌ هیچ مایه‌ی سه‌رسوڕمان نه‌بوو

that when word got to her that Karura was under attack,

كاتێك هه‌واڵی پێگه‌یشت كه‌ كاڕۆڕا له‌ژێر هێرشدایه‌،

they immediately sprang into action.

یه‌كسه‌ر ده‌ستیان به‌ كار كرد.

They battled police and hired goons

شه‌ری پۆلیسیان كرد و ڕێگریان به‌كرێگرت

to stop the theft of this forest.

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی دزیی ئه‌و دارستانه‌ ڕابگرن،

But fortunately, there was an uprising of support

به‌ڵام خۆشبه‌ختانه‌، شۆڕشێكی هاندان هه‌بوو

from the clergy, politicians, students and the general public,

له‌ لایه‌ن پیاوی ئایینی، سیاسه‌تمه‌داران، قوتابی و هه‌موو خه‌ڵك،

all of whom came out to say no to corruption and greed.

هه‌موویان هاتنه‌ ده‌ره‌وه‌ تا بڵێن نه‌خێر بۆ گه‌نده‌ڵیی و چڵێسیی.

And pretty soon, that support was too strong and intense

و هه‌ر زوو، ئه‌و هاندانه‌ زۆر به‌هێز و مه‌زن بوو

for the authorities to subdue.

بۆ ده‌سه‌ڵات بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی دایبمركێننه‌وه‌.

And Karura Forest was saved.

و دارستانی كاڕۆڕا ڕزگار كرا.

In the 2000s, I joined my mother in the Green Belt Movement

له‌ 2000 ه‌كان. چوومه‌ پاڵ دایكم له‌ جووڵه‌ی پشتێنه‌ی سه‌وز

and witnessed the growth of the movement's advocacy activities,

و گه‌واهیده‌ری په‌ره‌سه‌ندنی چاڵاكییه‌كانی داكۆكیكردنی جووڵه‌كه‌ بووم،

its expansion beyond Kenya

فراوان بوونی له‌ ده‌ره‌وه‌ی كینیا

and an extremely important growing consensus

و به‌هاوده‌نگییه‌كی گه‌وره‌ی ئێجگار گرنگ

around the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize that she received --

له‌ باره‌ی خه‌ڵاتی نۆبڵ بۆ ئاشتی له‌ 2004 كه‌ وەردەگرێت--

that the environment, democracy and peace were inextricably linked.

كه‌ ژینگه‌، دیموكراسیی و ئاشتی زۆر به‌ توندیی به‌یه‌كه‌ به‌سترا بوون.

I also learned that what my mother had faced that many years ago

و فێری ئه‌وه‌ش بووم كه‌ ئه‌وه‌ی دایكم چه‌ندین ساڵ پێش ئێستا ڕووبه‌ڕووی ببوه‌وه‌

trying to protect Karura Forest

له‌ هه‌وڵ دان بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی دارستانی كاڕۆڕا بپارێزێت

was not an isolated incident.

ڕووداوێكی جیاكراوه‌ نه‌بوو.

The corruption and greed that manifested itself then

ئه‌و گه‌نده‌ڵیی و چڵێسییه‌ی كه‌ له‌و كاته‌دا دیار كه‌وت

is alive and well today,

ئه‌مڕۆ هه‌ر ماوه‌ و زۆریش باشه‌،

from greedy politicians and public servants

له‌ لایه‌ن سیاسه‌تمه‌داره‌ چڵێسه‌كان و خزمه‌تكاره‌ ڕه‌مه‌كییه‌كان

willing to loot public coffers

كه‌ ده‌یانه‌وێت سندووقه‌ گشتی یه‌كان تاڵان بكه‌ن

at their expense.

له‌سه‌ر تێچوونی خۆیان.

Corruption is everywhere.

گه‌نده‌ڵیی له‌ هه‌موو شوێنێكه‌.

Now, corruption is devastating to any economy, democracy

ئێستا، گه‌نده‌ڵیی له‌ناوبه‌ری هه‌موو ئابووری، دیموكراسی

and the environment.

و ژینگه‌یه‌كه‌.

It robs citizens of vital social services

هاوڵاتیان تاڵان ده‌كات له‌ خزمه‌تگوزارییه‌ كۆمه‌ڵایه‌تی یه‌ ژێوه‌ره‌كان

and renders human life worthless.

و ژیانی مرۆڤه‌كان بێ به‌ها ده‌كات.

When young men are willing

كاتێك گه‌نجه‌كان له‌ ئامه‌ده‌ باشیدان

to join gangs

بۆ چوونه‌ پاڵ چه‌ته‌كان

and brutalize their communities

و ئازاری كۆمه‌ڵگەكانیان ده‌ده‌ن

for a small fee,

بۆ كرێیه‌كی كه‌م،

and women are raped on the way to work,

و ژنه‌كان ئه‌تك ده‌كرێن له‌ ڕێگەی چوونه‌ سه‌ر كاره‌كانیان،

and, when they report this,

و كاتێك هه‌واڵی ئه‌مه‌ ده‌ده‌ن،

the perpetrators bribe their way out of jail,

تاوانكاره‌كان به‌رتیل ده‌ده‌ن بۆ چوونه‌ ده‌ره‌وه‌ له‌ به‌ندیخانه‌،

and when young girls have to sell their bodies

وكاتێك كچه‌ گه‌نجه‌كان پێویستیان به‌وه‌ ده‌بێت جه‌سته‌یان بقرۆشن

to buy sanitary towels,

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی خاولی پاك بكڕن،

you know the society is broken.

ئێوه‌ ده‌زانن كۆمه‌ڵگە پارچه‌ پارچه‌ بووه‌.

In recent years, Kenya has been ranked

له‌و ساڵانه‌ی دوایی، كینیا

amongst the top 10 most corrupt countries in the world.

له‌ نێوان 10 له‌ گه‌نده‌ڵترین وڵاته‌كان له‌ جیهانە.

Even more frustrating for me is that Kenya loses

ته‌نانه‌ت ئه‌وه‌ی زۆر بێ ئومێدم ده‌كات ئه‌وه‌یه‌ كینیا به‌ هۆی

a third of her national budget to corruption each year.

گه‌نده‌ڵیی ساڵانه‌ سێ یه‌كی بوودجه‌ی نیشتمانیی له‌ ده‌ست ده‌دات.

That is six billion dollars.

كه‌ شه‌ش ملیار دۆلاره‌.

It is totally unacceptable.

ئه‌مه‌ به‌ته‌واوی قبووڵ نه‌كراوه‌.

In a country where anti-corruption efforts have been frustrated and ignored

-له‌ وڵاتێك كه‌ هه‌وڵه‌كانی به‌ره‌نگاربوون نه‌وه‌ی گه‌نده‌ڵیی بێ ئومێد كراوه‌ و

and interfered with,

پشتگوێ خراوه‌ و ده‌ستی تێوه‌ردراوه‌،

we absolutely need new strategies for dealing with this vice.

پێویستیمان به‌ به‌رنامه‌ڕێژیی نوێیه‌ بۆ مامه‌ڵه‌ كردن له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌م به‌دكارییه‌.

We cannot complain forever.

ناتوانین بۆ هه‌میشه‌ سكاڵا بكه‌ین.

We either decide that we're going to live with it

یاخود بڕیار ده‌ده‌ین كه‌وا له‌گه‌ڵی بژین

or we are going to change it.

یاخود ده‌یگۆڕین.

There's some good news.

هه‌ندێك هه‌واڵی باش هه‌یه‌.

Human beings are not born corrupt.

مرۆڤه‌كان به‌ گه‌نده‌ڵ له‌ دایك نه‌بوون

At some point, these behaviors are fostered by a culture

له‌ قۆناغێك، ئه‌م ڕه‌فتارانه‌ له‌ لایه‌ن شارستانییه‌تێك هان ده‌درێن

that promotes individual gain over collective progress.

كه‌ ده‌ستكه‌وتی تاك له‌سه‌ر پێشكه‌وتنی به‌ك ۆمه‌ڵ به‌رز ده‌كاته‌وه‌.

بۆیه‌ گه‌ر بمانه‌وێت گه‌نده‌ڵیی له‌ ڕه‌گ و ڕیشه‌وه‌ ده‌ربێنین،

So if we're going to uproot corruption,

we have got to start before it ever takes root.

پێویسته‌ ده‌ست پێ بكه‌ین پێش ئه‌وه‌ی ڕه‌گ دابكوتێت.

We have got to intervene early.

پێویسته‌ زوو ده‌ستی تێبخه‌ین.

I don't know about your country,

له‌ باره‌ی وڵاتی ئێوه‌ نازانم،

but where I come from,

به‌ڵام له‌و شوێنه‌ی لێی هاتووم،

youth will lead us into the future.

گه‌نجه‌كان ڕێبه‌ریمان ده‌كه‌ن بۆ داهاتوو.

In Kenya today, 80 percent of the population is under the age of 35.

ئه‌مڕۆ له‌ كینیا، 80 له‌ سه‌دی دانیشتووان له‌ ژێر ته‌مه‌نی 35 ساڵیی دان.

But by their own admission, they have conflicting values.

به‌ڵام به‌ دانپێدانانی خۆیان، به‌های دژواریان هه‌یه‌.

Fifty-eight percent of young people in Kenya recently told us

به‌مزووانه‌ په‌نجا و هه‌شت له‌ سه‌دی گه‌نجه‌كان له‌ كینیا پێیان ڕاگه‌یاندین

they will do anything to make money.

هه‌موو شتێك ده‌كه‌ن بۆ په‌یداكردنی پاره‌.

An additional 45 percent said

45 له‌ سه‌دی دیكه‌ گوتیان

corruption is a legitimate tool for doing business.

گه‌نده‌ڵیی ئامرازێكی ڕه‌وایه‌ بۆ ئه‌نجامدانی كاره‌ بازرگانییه‌كان.

Seventy-three percent

حه‌فتاو سێ له‌ سه‌د

said they would not be willing to stand up for what they believe in

گوتیان كه‌ ئاماده‌ نابن به‌رگری له‌وه‌ بكه‌ن كه‌ بڕوایان پێی هه‌یه‌

for fear of retribution.

له‌ ترسی سزادان.

What I learned from my mother

ئه‌وه‌ی كه‌ له‌ دایكم فێری بووم

a few years ago

چه‌ند ساڵێك پێش ئێستا

was this concept of "the power of one" --

چه‌مكی"ده‌سه‌ڵاتی تاك"--

that each of us can be potent agents of change

كه‌ هه‌ر یه‌ك له‌ ئێمه‌ ده‌توانێت ببێته‌ هۆكارێكی به‌هێز بۆ گۆڕان

and that together, we are a force,

و به‌یه‌كه‌وه‌، ئێمه‌ هێزێكین،

that if we put our hands together, we can change the situation

كه‌ گه‌ر ده‌ست بخه‌ینه‌ ناو ده‌سته‌وه‌ ده‌توانین بارودۆخه‌كه‌ بگۆڕین

and no problem is too big.

و كێشه‌ نییه‌ زۆرگه‌وره‌ بێت.

My mother understood this so profoundly

دایكم زۆر به‌ قووڵیی له‌وه‌ گه‌یشت

that it was at the center of her work.

كه‌ له‌ ناوه‌ڕاستی كاره‌كه‌یدا بوو.

Shifting cultures takes patience, persistence and commitment,

گۆڕینی شارستانییه‌ته‌كان پێویستی به‌ ئارام گرتن، به‌رده‌وایی و پابه‌ند بوونه‌،

and it is extremely slow and deep work.

و كارێكی زۆر هێواش و قووڵه‌.

But if we are going to shift a culture, we have got to get that work started.

-به‌ڵام گه‌رده‌مانه‌وێت شارستانییه‌تێك بگۆ ڕین، پێویسته‌ ده‌ست به‌ كاره‌كه‌ بكه‌ین.

And in the time since her passing, we have established a foundation in her name

له‌و كاته‌ی ماڵئاوایی كردووه‌، دامه‌زراوه‌ یه‌كمان به‌ ناوی ئه‌وه‌وه‌ دامه‌زراندووه‌

to do exactly that

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی ده‌قاوده‌ق ئه‌وه‌ بكات

but to work with young people and children

به‌ڵام بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی ئیش له‌گه‌ڵ خه‌ڵكی گه‌نج و منداڵ بكه‌یت

to begin to build character and personal leadership,

ده‌ست به‌ بنیاتنانی كه‌سایه‌تیی و سه‌ركردایه‌تیكردنی كه‌سیی بكه‌یت

to inspire purpose and integrity.

بۆ ئیلهام به‌خشینی ئامانج و ده‌ست پاكیی.

But fighting corruption is not as easy as saying corruption is bad.

به‌ڵام شه‌ڕكردن له‌گه‌ڵ گه‌نده‌ڵیی ئه‌وه‌نده‌ ئاسان نییه‌ كه‌ بڵێین خراپه‌.

Now, here are three strategies that we are employing

ئه‌مانه‌ سێ به‌رنامه‌ڕێژین كه‌ ئێمه‌ كاری پێ ده‌كه‌ین

that we believe can be replicated in any school community.

-كه‌ باوه‌ڕمان وایه‌ ده‌توانرێت له‌ هه‌ركۆ مه‌ڵگەیه‌كی فێرگه‌یی دوو باره‌ بكرێته‌وه‌

First, we must understand the why:

یه‌كه‌م: پێویسته‌ له‌ :هۆكاره‌كه‌ تێ بگه‌ین

Why does corruption happen in the first place?

بۆچی گه‌نده‌ڵیی ڕوو ده‌دات

Do we call it for what it is -- theft --

ئایا به‌وه‌ ناوی ده‌به‌ین كه‌ --دزی كردن--

or do we gloss over it with other words?

یاخود به‌ وشه‌ی تر جوانی ده‌كه‌ین؟

When young children are able to model what it looks and feels like

كاتێك منداڵه‌ بچووكه‌كان توانای خستنه‌ ڕووی ئه‌وه‌یان هه‌یه‌ كه‌ چییه‌ و چۆن

هه‌ستی پێ ده‌كه‌ن بۆ مامه‌ڵه‌كردن له‌گه‌ڵ گه‌نده‌ڵیی،

to deal with corruption,

they are likely, when faced with a dilemma in their future,

له‌وانه‌یه‌، كاتێك له‌ داهاتوویان ڕووبه‌ڕووی كێشه‌یه‌ك ده‌بنه‌وه‌ ،

to model what they've been taught.

ئه‌وه‌ی كه‌ فێری بوون نیشانی بده‌ن.

Second, we need to teach character explicitly.

دووه‌م: پێویسته‌ كه‌سایه‌تییه‌كه‌ به‌ ڕاشكاویی فێر بكه‌ین.

Now, this may seem obvious,

ئێستا، له‌وانه‌یه‌ ئه‌مه‌ ئاشكرا دیار بێت،

but a child who exhibits a growth mindset

به‌ڵام منداڵێك كه‌ هۆشمه‌ندیی گه‌شه‌ كردن ده‌خاته‌ڕوو

and a sense of self-control

له‌گه‌ڵ هه‌ستی خۆ كۆنتڕڵ كردن

is self-confident.

باوه‌ڕی به‌ خۆی هه‌یه‌.

And a self-confident child is likely to stand up for what they believe.

و ڕه‌نگه‌ منداڵی باوه‌ڕبه‌خۆبوو به‌رگریی بكات له‌وه‌ی كه‌ باوه‌ڕیان پێی هه‌یه‌.

Third, we need to build personal leadership in our children early

سێیه‌م: پێویسته‌ زوو سه‌ركردایه‌تیی كه‌سیی له‌ منداله‌كانمان درووست بكه‌ین

to give them an opportunity to know what it looks like

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی هه‌لێكیان پێ بدرێت بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی بزانن كه‌ چ هه‌ستێكه‌

to call corruption out when they see it,

كه‌ هاوار له‌ گه‌نده‌ڵیی ده‌كه‌ن كاتێك ده‌یبینن،

what it feels like to stand up and be counted when they're needed

چ هه‌ستێكه‌ كه‌ هه‌ڵسنه‌وه‌ سه‌ر پێ و بژمێردرێن كانێك پێویستیان پێیان هه‌یه‌

and, for me, to make the more and most important connection

و بۆ من، په‌یوه‌ندیی زیاتر و زیاتر درووست بكه‌ن

between human suffering on one hand

له‌ نێوان له‌ لایه‌كه‌وه‌ ئازاره‌كانی مرۆڤ

and corruption, greed and selfishness on the other.

و له‌لایه‌كی تریشه‌وه‌ گه‌نده‌ڵیی، چڵێسیی و خۆپه‌رستیی.

We have got to believe in our capacity

پێویسته‌ له‌ سه‌رمان باوه‌ڕمان به‌ تواناكانی خۆمان هه‌بێت

to bring about the future we want to see,

بۆ هێنانه‌دی ئه‌و داهاتووه‌ی كه‌ ده‌مانه‌وێت بیبینین،

each of us in our small way.

هه‌ریه‌ك له‌ ئێمه‌ به‌ ڕێگەی بچووكی خۆمان.

Young people must believe

گه‌نجه‌كان پێویسته‌ باوه‌ڕیان وابێت

that a new reality is possible.

كه‌ ڕاستی یه‌كی نوێ ده‌كرێت ڕوو بدات.

Corruption, climate change,

گه‌نده‌ڵیی، گۆڕانی كه‌ش و هه‌وا،

ecosystem collapse, biodiversity loss --

داڕمانی سیسته‌می ژینگه‌یی، له‌ ناو چوونی هه‌مه‌چه‌شنی بایه‌لۆجی--

all these issues need leadership.

هه‌موو ئه‌و پرسانه‌ پێویستییان به‌ سه‌ركردایه‌تیكردنه‌.

And in the words of Baba Dioum of Senegal,

و له‌ وته‌كانی بابا دیۆمی سه‌نیگالیی،

"In the final analysis,

"له‌ كۆتا شیكاریی،

we will conserve

پارێزگاریی ده‌كه‌ین

only what we love,

ته‌نیا ئه‌وه‌ی كه‌ خۆشمان ده‌وێت،

we will love

خۆشمان ده‌وێت

only what we understand

ته‌نیا ئه‌وه‌ی كه‌ تێی ده‌گه‌ین

and we will understand

و تێی ده‌گه‌ین

only what we are taught."

ته‌نیا ئه‌وه‌ی كه‌ فێركراوین."
