I was not one of those kids

من لەو منداڵانە نەبووم

that knew exactly what they wanted to do when they were growing up.

In the last 15 years of my career,

لە ۱٥ ڕابردووی ساڵی پیشەکەم،

I've been an English teacher, attorney, video game creator

and now, a toilet paper salesman,

selling millions of rolls of toilet paper a year.

Life is about finding the intersection of what you really, really love

ژیان بەدوای ئەو شتانە دەگەڕێ کە بەڕاستی خۆشمان دەوێن

with what you're really, really good at.

لەگەڵ ئەو شتانەی کە بەڕاستی تێیدا باشین.

As simple as it sounds, it's really not that easy to find.

After a brief stint as an English teacher,

I went to law school and ended up becoming an attorney

at a big law firm here in New York City.

Like most Americans, for the next two, three years,

I was holding on to my job for dear life,

working really late hours at a job that I thought maybe I was good at

I then came upon the epiphany

that it takes years if not tens of thousands of hours

to get really good at something.

I really didn't have a lot of time to waste.

This talk isn't for those looking to quit their job

ئەم گفتووگۆیە بۆ ئەوانە نییە کە واز لە کارەکانیان دێنن

because they don't like their boss or they had a long day at work.

چونکە بەڕێوبەرەکانیان خۆشناوێت یان بەدەست کاتی زۆری ئیش دەناڵێنن.

This is for those that are ready to make the completely scary leap

ئەمە بۆ ئەوکەسانەیە کە بەڕاستی ئامادەن هەنگاوێکی ترسناک بنێن

into a brand-new career.

لەپێناو کارێکی نوێدا.

So as you think about making a career change,

ئەگەر تۆش بیر لە پیشە گۆرین دەکەیتەوە،

here are a few tips I hope you consider

چەند خاڵیک هەیە هیوادارم ڕەچاویان بکەیت

and a few things I've picked up along the way.

و چەندین شتیش کە لەماوەی کار کردندا فێری بووم.

First, there's three things to think about before you're ready to move on.

سەرەتا سێ شت هەیە کە دەبێ بیری لێبکەیتەوە پێش ئەوەی دەست پێبکەی.

Number one: professional life is about learning.

If you're not even interested in learning anymore,

that's a huge red flag

that there might not be a future for you in that industry.

Number two: career changes are often gut-driven.

دووەم: پیشە گۆڕین بەهۆی هەستەوە.

If you constantly have sleepless nights

ئەگەر بەبەردەوامی شەوان بێ خەویت

where you're wide awake staring at the ceiling thinking,

سەرنجی بنمچی ژوورەکەت دەدەیت و بیر دەکەیتەوە،

"Oh, man. I can't live with myself if I never try to make this change

''ئۆه، من ناتوانم لەگەڵ خۆم بژیم ئەگەر ئەم گۆڕانکاریە تاقی نەکەمەوە

or if I don't even actually investigate it,"

یان ئەگەر بەڕاستی بەدەستی نەهێنم''

then trust your gut.

کەوایە باوڕ بەهەستت بکە.

It might be time for that career change.

ڕەنگە ئەمە کاتی پیشە گۆڕینەکەت بێت.

On the flip side,

بەڵام لە لایەکی ترەوە،

one reason to not move on is short-term pain.

هۆکارێک تاکو بەردەوام نەبیت ئازاری ماوە کورتە.

If you don't like your boss

ئەگەر بەرێوبەرەکەت خۆشناوێت

or people at the office are grating on you,

یان ئەو هاوڕێیانەی کارت کە سڵاوت لێدەکەن،

that's actually not a good reason to absolutely change your career,

بەڕاستی ئەوە هۆکار نییە بۆئەوەی پیشەکەت بگۆڕیت،

because when you do change a career,

لەبەرئەوەی کاتێک پیشەت دەگۆڕی،

you generally have to start from the bottom,

پێویستە لەسەرەتاوە دەست پێ بکەیتەوە،

and you'll probably feel a lot of short-term pain,

و ڕەنگە بۆماوەیەکی کاتی هەست بە چەندین ئازاربکەیت،

whether it's through a lack of salary or lack of a title.

Pain at any job is inevitable.

So now you're convinced that it's time to change your career.

Then there's three things to do immediately.

First: network, network, network.

No one ever builds a career without a good mentor

کەس بەبێ بوونی ئامۆژگاری یان هاوکاریەکی باشی ئینتەرنێت

or a good support network.

پیشەیەکی باشی دەست ناکەوێت.

What I mean by networking is getting all the great advice

مەبەستم لە ئینتەرنێت بەدەست هێانی هەر ئامۆژگاریەکی باشە

that you can possibly get.

Technology has made it so simple to reach out to new people

to say, "Hey, I'm thinking about making a career change.

بۆ ئەوەی بڵێیت: ''سڵاو من بیر لە گۆڕینی پیشە دەکەمەوە.

Do you have just five minutes to chat with me?"

ئایا پێنج خولەک کاتت هەیە قسەی لەسەر بکەین؟''

That passion and that hunger and that ability to be a sponge

ئەم ئەشق و تامەزرۆیە وات لێدەکات سەرنجی

really attracts awesome mentors

ڕاوێژکاری ناوازە ڕابکێشیت

and people willing to give you their time

و خەڵک کاتی خۆیانت پێ ببەخشن

to give you some good advice.

بۆئەوەی ئامۆژگاری باشت بکەن.

So go out there and meet new people.

کەواتە وەرە دەرەوە و خەڵکی نوێ بناسە.

The second thing you need to do immediately

دووەم شت کە پێویستە دەستبەجێ ئەنجامی بدەیت

is shore up your finances.

لایەنی بژێویت بەرز بکەوە.

The reality is, when you change your career,

ڕاستیەکەی ئەوەیە، کاتێک پیشەکەت دەگۆڕیت،

you'll either start with a job with a lower title

ئیشێکی ئاست نزمتر دەکەیت

or lower pay or maybe even no pay,

یان مووچەی کەم بێ یان هەر پارەی تێدا نەبێ،

especially if you're starting your own business.

بەتایبەتی کاتێک دەست بە پرۆژەی خۆت دەکەیت.

So going out there and making sure your finances are in order

to make the transition less painful

is really, really important.

For me personally, as I made the transition from being an attorney

over to a video game creator,

I wanted to have at least six to 12 months of personal runway in the bank.

Six to 12 months might not be the right number for you,

but be honest with yourself on what that number should be.

Number three, if you're not ready to make the full jump right at this moment,

then get your side hustle on.

جەخت بخەرە سەر لایەنێکی تر.

Side hustles could be anything from volunteering with an organization

جا ئەو لایەنەی تر هەر شتێک بێت خۆبەخشی بێت لەگەڵ ڕێکخراوێک

that's in the new industry you want to go into,

ئەمە ئەو پیشە نوێیە کە تۆ دەتەوێت بچیتە ناوی،

could be starting your business part-time on the weekends.

دەبێت دەست پێ بکەیت لە کاتێکی دیاری کراوی کۆتایی هەفتە.

It's a free way to get a taste to see if you really love something.

ئەوە ڕێگەیەکی ئازادە بۆ ئەوەی تاقی بکەیەوە تاوەکو بزانی حەزت لێیەتی.

So you're ready to make the move

کەوایە ئامادەیی بیگۆڕیت

or maybe you already made the move.

لەوانەشە دەستت بە گۆڕینیشی کردبێت.

Here are three things you should think about doing, right now.

لێرە دەبێ بیر لەسێ شت بکەیتەوە ئەنجامی بدەیت، هەرئێستا.

One: do not -- I repeat -- do not burn bridges.

یەکەم : دووبارەی دەکەمەوە پردەکە مەسوتێنە.

You spent years building those bridges,

تۆ چەندین ساڵت پێچوو تا دروستی بکەیت

why burn them now?

ئەی ئێستا بۆ دەیسوتێنیت؟

The world is such a small place,

جیهان شوێنێکی بچووکە،

especially with all these online platforms,

بەتایبەت لەگەڵ ئەو هەموو سەکۆیانەی سەرهێڵ،

that, believe me, you will see these people again

کە، باوڕم پێبکە تۆ دووبارە ئەو کەسانە دەبینیتەوە

and probably in the most inopportune times.

و ڕەنگە لەکاتێکی زۆر ناوەخت بێ.

Number two: take stock of what you've learned

ژمارە دوو: سەرنج بدە بزانە فێری چی بوویت

in your previous career or careers.

لە کاری پێشوت یان لەپیشەکانی ترت.

Most likely, a lot of those things are really applicable

زۆرجار ئەو شتانە بەڕاستی لە کارە نوێیەکەت

to your new job and your new career,

یان پیشە نوێیەکەت جێبەجێ دەبن،

whether it's interacting with people, playing on a team

ئەگەرچی کارەکەت پەیوەست بێت مامەڵەکردن لەگەڵ خەڵک، کارکردنی گروپ

or dealing with jerks and assholes.

یان مامەڵە کردن لەگەڵ خەڵکی گەمژە بێت.

All those things are really universally applicable.

دەتوانی ئەو شتانە ئەنجام بدەیت و لێی سوودمەند بیت.

You'll find jerks no matter what industry you're in;

خەڵکی گاڵتەجار دەبینیت ؛ئەگەر لە هەر پیشەیەکدابیت

no one's immune to it, everyone's got to figure it out,

هیچ کەس دژی ئەوە نییە پێوویستە هەمووان ئەوە بزانن،

and you probably know how to do it already.

ڕەنگە تۆش زانیبێتت کە چۆن ئەنجامی دەدەیت

Lastly, when you start your new job, you're going to be nervous.

لەکۆتایدا کاتێک دەست بە پیشە نوێیەکەت دەکەیت دەشڵەژێیت.

But don't worry, take a deep breath,

بەڵام نیگەران مەبە هەناسەیەکی قووڵ هەڵمژە،

because this is what I want to tell you:

لەبەرئەوەی دەمەوێت ئەمەت پێبلێم:

you're part of a new team now,

ئێستا تۆ سەر بە گرووپێکی نوێیت،

and everyone around you is rooting for your success,

و هەموو کەسێک لە ناخی دڵەوە هیوای سەرکەوتنت بۆ دەخوازێت،

because your success is their success.

لەبەرئەوەی سەرکەوتنی تۆ سەرکەووتنی ئەوانیشە.

So welcome to your new career.

کەوایە بەخێربێیت بۆ کارە نوێیەکەت.
