Being able to navigate is an extraordinary gift,

because you can't be anything else.

You are naked in front of your peers on a boat.

배에서는 동료들에게 아무것도 숨기지 않습니다.

It is a small area.

배는 작은 공간이죠.

Maiden is 58 feet long.

메이든호는 18m 정도 됩니다.

There's 12 women in a 58-foot boat.

12명의 여성이 18m의 배에 타고 있죠.

I mean, you are literally up against each other,

말 그대로 서로 마주 보고 있기에

and so you have to be you.

자기 자신이 될 수 밖에 없습니다.

The greatest moment for me when I'm sailing

항해할 때 제게 가장 위대한 순간은

is the moment that the land disappears.

육지가 사라지는 순간입니다.

It's an indescribable moment of --

말로 할 수 없는 순간이죠.

(Gasps)

(숨을 삼킴)

adventure and no turning back,

모험이 있고 더는 돌아갈 수 없습니다.

and just you and the boat and the elements.

자기 자신과 배, 그리고 대자연밖엔 없죠.

I wish everyone could experience this at least once in their lives.

모든 사람이 평생 적어도 한 번은 이런 경험을 해보길 바랍니다.

The further you get away from land,

육지에서 멀어질수록

the more you kind of fit into yourself.

자신을 더 돌아보게 되죠.

It is you,

스스로 결정하는 것입니다.

how do we get to the next place,

다음 장소에 어떻게 가고 어떻게 살아남고

how do we stay alive,

how do we look after each other

어떻게 서로 돌보고

and what do we do to get to the other side.

목적지로 가기 위해 무엇을 할지를요.

So the question I get asked the most when I go and do talks

항해하고 강연할 때마다 가장 많이 받은 질문은 이겁니다.

is "How do you become an ocean-racing sailor?"

"어떻게 해상 경주 팀원이 됐나요?"

And that's a really good question.

아주 좋은 질문이에요.

And I've always wanted to say "I had a vision,

저는 항상 말하고 싶었죠.

"저는 목표가 있습니다. 목표는 꿈이 되었고,

which became a dream,

which became an obsession,"

꿈은 집념이 되었죠."

but, of course, life's not like that,

물론 삶이 그렇지만은 않죠.

and one thing I'm really anxious for people to know about me

저에 대해 알아주길 간절히 바라는 한 가지는

is that my life hasn't gone from A to B --

제 삶이 A에서 B로 가진 않았단 겁니다.

because how many people can say their lives just go from A to B;

삶이 단순히 A에서 B로 갔다고 할 수 있는 사람이 얼마나 될까요?

they think, "I'm going to do this," and they go and do it?

'이걸 할 거야'라 말하고는 가서 그걸 하나요?

So I tell the truth.

그래서 저는 사실대로 말합니다.

And the truth is that I was expelled from school when I was 15 years old,

저는 15살 때 퇴학당했죠.

and my long-suffering headmaster sent a long-suffering note

오랫동안 참고 참았던 교장 선생님은

오랫동안 벼르고 벼르던 편지를 오래 참고 있던 제 어머니께 보냈죠.

to my long-suffering mother,

basically saying that if Tracy darkens these doors of the school again,

And my mum took me and she said,

"Darling, education is not for everyone."

And then she gave me the best piece of advice anyone has ever given me.

She said, "Every single one of us is good at something,

you just have to go and find what that is."

And at the age of 16, she let me go backpacking off to Greece.

I ended up working on boats, which was OK --

17 years old, didn't really know what I wanted to do,

kind of going with the flow.

그냥 흘러가는 대로 살았죠.

And then on my second transatlantic,

my skipper said to me, "Can you navigate?"

"배를 조종할 수 있니?"

And I said, "Of course I can't navigate,

"물론 못 하죠.

나눗셈을 배우기 전에 퇴학당했거든요."

I was expelled before long division."

And he said, "Don't you think you should be able to navigate?

"항해를 할 줄 알아야 할 것 같지 않니?

What happens if I fall over the side?

내가 배에서 떨어지면 어쩌려고?

Stop being a bystander in your own life,

네 삶에서 방관자가 되지 마.

stop looking at what you're doing

보기만 하지 말고 뛰어들어봐."

and start taking part."

This day, for me, was the day that my whole life started.

바로 그날이 제 인생이 시작된 날입니다.

I learned to navigate in two days --

이틀 만에 항해하는 법을 배웠죠.

and this is someone who hates numbers

수학이 싫고 상형문자처럼 여기던 저인데 말이죠.

and sees them as hieroglyphics.

It opened up avenues and opportunities to me that I could never have imagined.

제가 상상도 못 했던 세상과 기회를 열어주었습니다.

I actually managed to get a ride on a Whitbread Round the World Race boat.

저는 실제로 휘트브레드 세계 일주 경주 배에 탈 수 있었죠.

It was with 17 South African men and me.

남아프리카 공화국 남자들 17명과 함께요.

I was 21 years old,

저는 21살이었고

and it was the longest nine months of my life.

제 인생에서 가장 길었던 9개월을 보냈습니다.

But I went as a cook,

하지만 전 식사 담당이었고

I managed to survive until the end,

and when I got to end of this race,

I realized that there were 230 crew in this race,

and three women,

and I was one of them.

And I'm a lousy cook.

I'm a really good navigator.

I think the second most profound thought in my entire life was:

제 생애 두 번째로 심오한 생각은 이것입니다.

"No man is ever going to allow me to be a navigator on their boat, ever."

"어떤 남자도 내가 자기 배의 선장이 되는 걸 절대 용납하지 않을 것이다."

And that is still the case today.

오늘날에도 여전히 그렇죠.

In 35 years of the Whitbread,

휘트브레드 35년 역사상

여성으로만 꾸려진 배가 아닌 배에서 항해사가 된 여성은 단 두 명입니다.

there's only been two female navigators that haven't been on an all-female cruise,

메이든호는 그렇게 탄생했습니다.

and that's how Maiden was born.

That was the moment I thought, "I've got something to fight for."

그 순간 저는 이렇게 생각했죠. "내가 맞서 싸워야겠구나."

And I had no idea that I wanted to have this fight,

제가 이 싸움을 하고 싶은지는 몰랐죠.

and it was something that I took to like a duck to water.

그냥 아주 익숙해진 것입니다.

I discovered things about myself that I had no idea existed.

존재하는지도 몰랐던 것들을 제 안에서 발견했죠.

I discovered I had a fighting spirit,

제가 투지가 있단 것을 발견했고,

I discovered I was competitive --

제가 경쟁심이 강한 것도 발견했죠.

never knew that before --

이전에는 몰랐던 사실입니다.

and I discovered my second passion,

그리고 제 두 번째 열정을 발견했어요.

which was equality.

바로 평등입니다.

I couldn't let this one lie.

평등을 논하지 않을 수 없었습니다.

And it became not just about me wanting to navigate on a boat

그건 배를 몰고 싶어하는 저만을 위한 것이 아니었습니다.

and having to put my own crew together

제 선원을 모아야 하고 제 팀을 모아야 하고

and my own team,

raise my own money, find my own boat,

자금도 모으고 배도 구해야 하죠.

so that I could be navigator.

그래야 항해를 할 수 있으니까요.

This was about women everywhere.

이건 모든 여성을 위한 것입니다.

And this was when I realized

저는 그때 깨달았습니다.

that this was probably what I was going to spend the rest of my life doing.

남은 생애를 보내며 해야 할 일이 바로 그것이라는 것을요.

It took ages for us to find the money

한참이 걸려서야 돈을 마련해서

to do the 1989 Whitbread Round the World Race.

1989년 휘트브레드 세계 일주 경기에 나갈 수 있었죠.

And as we looked at all the big,

큰돈이 들었을 법한 거대한 배들,

multimillion pound, all-male projects around us,

남자 선원만 있는 배들,

with their brand-new shiny boats designed for the race,

번쩍이는 최신형 경주용 배들을 보며

we realized this was not going to be us.

우리는 어림도 없겠다고 생각했습니다.

We had to make this up as we went along.

우리는 일을 진행하면서 메꿔 나가야 했죠.

No one had enough faith in us to give us this kind of money.

우릴 믿고 자금을 지원해줄 사람이 없었습니다.

So I mortgaged my house,

그래서 저의 집을 담보로 해서

and we found an old wreck with a pedigree,

유서 깊은 낡은 배를 찾았습니다.

낡은 휘트브레드 경주 배인데 세계를 두 번이나 일주한 배였습니다.

an old Whitbread boat --

it had already been around the world twice --

그 배는 남아프리카 공화국에 있었죠.

in South Africa.

We somehow persuaded some guy to put it on a ship

그 배를 옮겨줄 사람들을 어찌어찌 구해서

and bring it back to the UK for us.

영국에 돌아올 수 있었습니다.

The girls were horrified at the state of the boat.

우리는 배 상태를 보고 기가 질렸죠.

We got a free place in a yard.

빈 공터를 구해서

We got her up on the hard and we redesigned her,

배를 수리대에 올려두고

새로 디자인하고 배를 조각조각 뜯었습니다.

we ripped her apart,

we did all the work ourselves.

그 모든 일을 우리 여자들이 했죠.

It was the first time that anyone had ever seen women in a shipyard,

여자들이 조선소에 있는 건 처음이라 큰 구경거리였죠.

so that was quite entertaining.

Every morning when we would walk in,

매일 아침 우리가 들어갈 때마다 모든 사람이 넋을 잃고 바라봤죠.

everyone would just gawk at us.

But it also had its advantages, because everyone was so helpful.

하지만 좋은 점도 있었어요. 모두가 기꺼이 도와줬거든요.

We were such a novelty.

우리는 아주 신기한 사람들이었죠.

You know, we got given a generator, an engine --

발전기나 엔진을 주기도 했어요.

"Do you want this old rope?"

"쓰던 밧줄인데 쓸래요?" "네."

"Yep."

"낡은 돛도 있는데?" "네. 주세요."

"Old sails?"

"Yep, we'll have those."

그야말로 하나씩 구하면서 만들었죠.

So we really made it up as we went along.

And I think, actually, one of the huge advantages we had was,

사실 제 생각에 우리의 가장 큰 이점은

you know, there was no preconceived idea

선입견이 없었단 것이죠.

about how an all-female crew would sail around the world.

전원 여성인 배가 세계를 어떻게 항해할지에 대해서요.

So whatever we did was OK.

그래서 우리가 뭘 하든 괜찮았어요.

And what it also did was it drew people to it.

또 다른 점은 사람들을 끌어들였다는 것이죠.

Not just women --

여자뿐만 아니라

men, anyone who'd ever been told,

"당신은 실력이 없어서 안 되겠어." 이 말을 한번이라도 들어본 남자들도요.

"You can't do something because you're not good enough" --

성별, 인종이나 피부색 때문에 차별받은 모든 사람들이요.

the right gender or right race or right color, or whatever.

Maiden became a passion.

메이든호는 열정이 되었죠.

And it was hard to raise the money --

자금을 모으기가 어려웠어요.

hundreds of companies wouldn't sponsor us.

수백 개의 회사들 중에 후원해주는 곳이 없었죠.

They told us that we couldn't do it,

우리가 해낼 수 없을 거라면요.

people thought we were going to die ...

사람들은 우리가 죽을 거라 생각했습니다.

You know, guys would literally come up to me and say,

남자들은 대놓고 말했죠. "넌 죽을 거야."

"You're going to die."

저는 이렇게 생각했죠. "내 일이니까 당신은 신경 쓰지마."

I'd think, "Well, OK, that's my business, it's not yours."

In the end, King Hussein of Jordan sponsored Maiden,

마침내 요르단의 후세인 1세가 메이든호를 후원했죠.

and that was an amazing thing --

놀라운 일이었어요.

way ahead of his time, all about equality.

그는 평등의 모든 면에서 시대를 한참 앞서갔죠.

We sailed around the world with a message of peace and equality.

우리는 평화와 평등의 교훈을 싣고 세계 곳곳을 항해했습니다.

We were the only boat in the race with a message of any kind.

그 경주에서 뭔가 교훈이 담긴 배는 우리 배가 유일했어요.

We won two legs of the Whitbread --

우리는 휘트브레드 경주에서 가장 어려운 두 구간을 우승했고

two of the most difficult legs --

and we came second overall.

최종 2등을 차지했습니다.

And that is still the best result for a British boat since 1977.

그건 1977년 이래로 지금까지 영국 배 중 최고 기록이고

It annoyed a lot of people.

많은 이를 짜증 나게 했죠.

And I think what it did at the time --

그때 일을 생각해보면 우리는 몰랐습니다.

we didn't realize.

You know, we crossed the finishing line, this incredible finish --

우리가 결승선을 통과할 때는 그야말로 장관이었죠.

환영 나온 600척의 배들이 우리와 함께 솔렌트 해협을 지날 때

600 boats sailing up the Solent with us;

50,000 people in Ocean Village chanting "Maiden, Maiden" as we sailed in.

오션빌리지에 있던 5만 명의 사람들이 외쳤죠.

"메이든, 메이든!"

입항하는 우리 배를 향해서요.

And so we knew we'd done something that we wanted to do

우린 우리가 바라던 것을 해냈단 걸 알았습니다.

and we hoped we'd achieved something good,

우린 우리가 뭔가 좋은 걸 성취했길 바랐죠.

but we had no idea at the time how many women's lives we changed.

우리가 얼마나 많은 여성의 삶을 바꿨는지 당시엔 알지 못했어요.

남극해는 제가 가장 좋아하는 바다죠.

The Southern Ocean is my favorite ocean.

Each ocean has a character.

모든 바다가 특징이 있습니다.

So the North Atlantic is a yomping ocean.

북대서양은 행군하는 바다죠.

It's a jolly, go-for-it, heave-ho type of --

쾌활하고, 도전적이고, 한번 해 보라고 하는,

have-fun type of ocean.

즐기는 유형의 바다죠.

The Southern Ocean is a deadly serious ocean.

남극해는 아주 엄격한 바다예요.

And you know the moment when you cross into the Southern Ocean --

남극해에 진입하는 순간을

the latitude and longitude --

위도와 경도로 알 수 있습니다.

you know when you're there,

거기에 도달하면 파도들이 점점 커지고

the waves have been building,

they start getting big whitecaps on the top,

물마루가 하얗게 부서지기 시작하고

it becomes really gray,

아주 흐려져서 방향 감각을 잃어버리게 됩니다.

you start to get sensory deprivation.

It is very focused on who you are and what you are

내가 누구고 뭘 하고 있는지에 집중하게 되죠.

with this massive wilderness around you.

엄청난 야성에 둘러싸여서요.

It is empty.

공허해요.

It is so big and so empty.

너무나 크고 너무나 공허하죠.

You see albatrosses swirling around the boat.

신천옹이 배 주변을 빙빙 도는 것을 볼 수 있어요.

It takes about four days to sail through their territory,

그들의 영역을 지나는 데 4일 가량이 걸리죠.

so you have the same albatross for four days.

그래서 4일간 같은 신천옹을 봅니다.

And they find us quite a novelty,

그들은 우리를 신기하다고 여겨서

so they literally windsurf off the wind that comes off the mainsail

말 그대로 바람을 타고 주 돛으로 와서

and they hang behind the boat,

배 뒤를 따라옵니다.

and you feel this presence behind you,

뒤에 뭐가 있는 게 느껴져서 뒤를 돌아보면

and you turn around,

and it's this albatross just looking at you.

신천옹이 이렇게 보고 있습니다.

We sold Maiden at the end of the race --

경기가 끝나고 우린 메이든호를 팔았어요.

we still had no money.

여전히 돈이 없었거든요.

And five years ago, we found her,

5년 전에 그 배를 되찾았습니다.

at the same time as a film director decided

한 영화감독이 메이든호에 관한 다큐멘터리를 만들고 싶어 했거든요.

he wanted to make a documentary about Maiden.

We found Maiden,

메이든호를 찾자 그 배가 제 삶에 다시 벌컥 들어와선

she burst back into my life

and reminded me a lot of things I had forgotten, actually,

수년간 잊고 있던 많은 것들을 상기시켰죠.

over the years,

제 마음과 직감을 따르는 것과

about following my heart and my gut

and really being part of the universe.

내가 우주의 한 부분이란 것을요.

And everything I find important in life,

제 삶에서 중요하다고 생각한 모든 것을

Maiden has given back to me.

메이든호가 제게 다시 돌려줬죠.

Again, we rescued her --

우리는 그 배를 다시 한번 구조했죠.

we did a Crowdfunder --

크라우드 펀딩을 통해서 그 배를 세이셸에서 되찾았고

we rescued her from the Seychelles.

Princess Haya, King Hussein's daughter,

후세인 왕의 딸인 하야 공주 후원으로

funded the shipping back to the UK and then the restoration.

영국으로 운반해서 복원을 진행했습니다.

All the original crew were involved.

원년 선원이 모두 참여했습니다.

We put the original team back together.

우리는 원년 팀을 다시 모았죠.

And then we decided, what are we going to do with Maiden?

그리고 우리는 메이든호로 무엇을 할지 생각했죠.

And this, for me, really was the moment of my life

그리고 그건 정말 제 삶의 중요한 순간이었습니다.

where I looked back on every single thing that I'd done --

제가 한 모든 것,

every project, every feeling,

모든 계획, 모든 감정,

every passion, every battle, every fight --

모든 열정, 모든 투쟁, 모든 싸움을 돌아보았습니다.

and I decided that I wanted Maiden to continue that fight

저는 메이든호가 이 싸움을 이어나가서

for the next generation.

다음 세대에게 보여주길 바랐습니다.

Maiden is sailing around the world on a five-year world tour.

메이든호는 5년의 세계 일주에서 세계 곳곳을 항해하고 있죠.

We are engaging with thousands of girls all over the world.

우린 전 세계 소녀들 수천 명과 교류하고 있습니다.

We are supporting community programs that get girls into education.

소녀들의 교육을 돕는 지역 활동을 후원하고 있죠.

Education doesn't just mean sitting in a classroom.

교실에 그저 앉아있는 건 교육이 아닙니다.

This, for me, is about teaching girls you don't have to look a certain way,

소녀들에게 가르쳐야 할 건 이런 거라고 생각합니다.

정해진 길만 바라볼 필요 없고

you don't have to feel a certain way,

정해진 방식으로만 느껴야 할 필요 없고

정해진 방식으로만 행동할 필요가 없단다.

you don't have to behave a certain way.

You can be successful,

성공할 수 있고 자신의 꿈을 좇을 수 있고

you can follow your dreams

and you can fight for them.

그걸 위해 싸울 수 있단다.

Life doesn't go from A to B.

인생은 A에서 B로 가는 게 아니라 복잡하게 얽혀 있단다.

It's messy.

My life has been a mess from beginning to end,

제 삶은 처음부터 끝까지 복잡했지만

but somehow I've got to where we're going.

저는 어떻게든 우리의 길을 갔습니다.

The future for us and Maiden looks amazing.

우리와 메이든호의 미래는 놀라울 것입니다.

And for me,

제 생각에는 고리를 끊는 것이 가장 중요합니다.

it is all about closing the circle.

It's about closing the circle with Maiden

메이든호로 고리를 끊고

and using her to tell girls

그 배를 이용해 소녀들에게

that if just one person believes in you,

단 한 사람만이라도 너희를 믿는다면

you can do anything.

뭐든 할 수 있다고 말하는 거죠.
