How I found a mythical boiling river in the Amazon | Andrés Ruzo

As a boy in Lima,

my grandfather told me a legend

of the Spanish conquest of Peru.

Atahualpa, emperor of the Inca, had been captured and killed.

Pizarro and his conquistadors had grown rich,

피자로와 그의 정복자들은 부를 얻게 되었죠.

and tales of their conquest and glory had reached Spain

그들의 정복에 대한 얘기들은 스페인 사람들에게

and was bringing new waves of Spaniards, hungry for gold and glory.

금과 영광을 갈구하는 새로운 시대를 불러왔습니다.

그들은 마을들을 돌아다니며 잉카민족들에게 물었죠,

They would go into towns and ask the Inca,

"Where's another civilization we can conquer? Where's more gold?"

"우리가 정복할 수 있는 또 다른 문명이 어딨지? 더 많은 금은 어딨어?"

And the Inca, out of vengeance, told them,

잉카민족은 복수심을 가지고 그들에게 말했죠,

"Go to the Amazon.

"아마존 숲으로 들어가세요.

You'll find all the gold you want there.

거기서 원하는 금을 모두 찾을 수 있을 거예요.

In fact, there is a city called Paititi -- El Dorado in Spanish --

파이티티라는 도시가 있는데 스페인어로는 '엘 도라도'라고 불리죠.

made entirely of gold."

도시 전체가 황금으로 만들어졌어요."

The Spanish set off into the jungle,

스페인 사람들은 정글 속으로 들어갔고

but the few that return come back with stories,

돌아온 단 몇 명의 생존자들은

stories of powerful shamans,

위대한 주술사,

of warriors with poisoned arrows,

독화살을 지닌 전사들,

of trees so tall they blotted out the sun,

태양을 가릴만큼 높고 큰 나무들,

spiders that ate birds, snakes that swallowed men whole

새들을 잡아먹는 거미들과 사람을 통째로 삼키는 뱀들,

and a river that boiled.

또 끓어오르는 강에 대한 이야기들을 전해주었죠.

All this became a childhood memory.

이 모든 건 어릴 적 추억으로 남겨졌고

And years passed.

세월이 흘렀어요.

I'm working on my PhD at SMU,

저는 지금 SMU에서 박사과정을 밟고 있습니다.

trying to understand Peru's geothermal energy potential,

페루의 지열 에너지를 공부하고 있는데

when I remember this legend,

순간 그 전설이 떠올랐고

and I began asking that question.

제 자신에게 묻기 시작했죠.

Could the boiling river exist?

정말 끓어오르는 강이 있을까?

I asked colleagues from universities,

대학 동기들과

the government,

정부,

oil, gas and mining companies,

정유, 가스 및 채광 회사들에게 물어봤지만

and the answer was a unanimous no.

아니라는 대답만 돌아왔습니다.

And this makes sense.

그럴만도 하죠.

You see, boiling rivers do exist in the world,

끓어오르는 강들이 실존하기는 하지만

but they're generally associated with volcanoes.

주로 화산과 관련있었죠.

You need a powerful heat source

굉장히 강한 열원이 있어야

to produce such a large geothermal manifestation.

그렇게 큰 지열의 특징을 볼 수 있기 때문이죠.

And as you can see from the red dots here, which are volcanoes,

여기 빨간 점들이 다 화산들인데 보시다시피

we don't have volcanoes in the Amazon,

아마존이나 페루에는 화산들이 없어요.

nor in most of Peru.

So it follows: We should not expect to see a boiling river.

그래서 끓어오르는 강을 예상할 수 없는거죠.

Telling this same story at a family dinner,

이 얘기를 가족 모임에서 말하는데

my aunt tells me,

우리 이모가 말씀하셨어요,

"But no, Andrés, I've been there. I've swum in that river."

"아니야 안드레, 내가 가본 적 있어. 그 강에서 수영한 적도 있는데?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Then my uncle jumps in.

그러자 이모부도 끼어드셨어요,

"No, Andrés, she's not kidding.

"안드레, 이모가 장난하는게 아니야.

You see, you can only swim in it after a very heavy rain,

비가 굉장히 많이 온 후에만 수영을 할 수 있어.

and it's protected by a powerful shaman.

굉장한 힘을 지닌 주술사가 강을 지키고 있지.

Your aunt, she's friends with his wife."

그리고 그 주술사의 아내가 네 이모랑 친한 사이란다."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"¿Cómo?" ["Huh?"]

"뭐라고?"

You know, despite all my scientific skepticism,

과학적 회의에도 불구하고

I found myself hiking into the jungle, guided by my aunt,

화산 중심부에서 700km나 떨어진

over 700 kilometers away from the nearest volcanic center,

정글 안으로 이모와 함께 들어갔죠.

and well, honestly, mentally preparing myself

내심 "아마존의 따뜻한 물줄기"를

to behold the legendary "warm stream of the Amazon."

정말 볼 수 있을까 기대하면서요.

But then ...

바로 그때...

I heard something,

어떤 소리가 들렸어요.

a low surge

낮은 물소리가

that got louder and louder

점점 가까이 다가갈수록

as we came closer.

더욱 더 커졌죠.

It sounded like ocean waves constantly crashing,

마치 바다의 파도들이 계속해서 밀려오는 것 같은 소리였어요.

and as we got closer, I saw smoke, vapor, coming up through the trees.

더 가까이 다가갈수록 연기같은 수증기가 나무 사이로 보였죠.

And then, I saw this.

그리고 이런 광경이 펼쳐졌어요.

I immediately grabbed for my thermometer,

저는 바로 온도계를 꺼내

and the average temperatures in the river

강의 온도를 잰 결과

were 86 degrees C.

섭씨 86도였습니다.

This is not quite the 100-degree C boiling

끓는 물의 섭씨 100도와는 조금 차이가 나지만

but definitely close enough.

굉장히 가깝죠.

The river flowed hot and fast.

강은 뜨겁고 빠르게 흘렀어요.

I followed it upriver and was led by, actually, the shaman's apprentice

주술사의 제자를 따라서

가장 신성하게 여겨진다는 강의 위 쪽으로 올라가보니

to the most sacred site on the river.

And this is what's bizarre --

정말 특이하게도

It starts off as a cold stream.

처음엔 차가운 물줄기로 흐릅니다.

And here, at this site,

그리고 이곳은

is the home of the Yacumama,

야쿠마마, 즉 물의 어머니이자 거대한 뱀의 영혼이라고 여겨지는

mother of the waters, a giant serpent spirit

야쿠마마의 집입니다.

who births hot and cold water.

뜨거운 물과 차가운 물을 낳는다고 하죠.

And here we find a hot spring,

그래서 여기에는 뜨거운 온천물이

mixing with cold stream water underneath her protective motherly jaws

차가운 물줄기와 섞이는

and thus bringing their legends to life.

전설이 실화가 되는거죠.

The next morning, I woke up and --

다음 날 아침, 일어나서

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I asked for tea.

차 한 잔 좀 달라고 부탁했더니

I was handed a mug, a tea bag

머그컵과 티백을 주고선

and, well, pointed towards the river.

강쪽을 가리키더군요.

To my surprise, the water was clean and had a pleasant taste,

대부분의 온천수와는 달리

놀랍게도 강물은 깨끗하고 맛이 좋았어요.

which is a little weird for geothermal systems.

정말 놀라웠던건

What was amazing

is that the locals had always known about this place,

이 지역 사람들은 항상 이 곳에 대해 알고 있었어요.

제가 처음으로 강을 본 외부인도 아니었고요.

and that I was by no means the first outsider to see it.

It was just part of their everyday life.

이 사람들에게 강은 그냥 일상생활의 하나였던 거예요.

They drink its water.

강의 물을 마시고,

They take in its vapor.

그 수증기를 들이키고,

요리를 하는데 쓰고,

They cook with it,

청소할 때 쓰고,

clean with it,

even make their medicines with it.

심지어는 약을 만들 때 쓰기도 하죠.

마치 강과 정글을 연장한 듯한

I met the shaman,

and he seemed like an extension of the river and his jungle.

주술사를 만났을 때

He asked for my intentions

그는 저의 의도가 뭔지 묻고

and listened carefully.

제 대답을 주의해서 들었어요.

Then, to my tremendous relief --

정말 다행스럽게도

I was freaking out, to be honest with you --

사실 저 정말 무서웠거든요

a smile began to snake across his face, and he just laughed.

미소를 지으시더니 그냥 웃음을 터뜨리셨어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I had received the shaman's blessing to study the river,

주술사는 제게 강물을 연구할 수 있는 허락을 주며

on the condition that after I take the water samples

한 가지 조건을 걸었는데,

연구실에서 강물을 분석한 뒤

and analyze them in my lab,

wherever I was in the world,

제가 세상 그 어디에 있던

that I pour the waters back into the ground

다시 땅으로 물을 흘려보내는 거였어요.

주술사가 말하길,

so that, as the shaman said,

the waters could find their way back home.

그래야만 강물이 다시 집으로 찾아올 수 있다고요.

I've been back every year since that first visit in 2011,

저는 2011년의 처음 방문 뒤, 매 년 다시 찾아갔고

and the fieldwork has been exhilarating,

현장 작업은 정말 흥미롭지만

demanding and at times dangerous.

힘들면서 때론 위험하죠.

One story was even featured in National Geographic Magazine.

내셔널 지오그래픽 매거진에 이야기가 실린적도 있어요.

I was trapped on a small rock about the size of a sheet of paper

종이 한 장 크기의 작은 바위에서

반바지와 샌달 차림으로

in sandals and board shorts,

in between an 80 degree C river

섭씨 80도의 물줄기와

and a hot spring that, well, looked like this, close to boiling.

거의 끓어오르는 온천 사이에서 옴짝달싹도 못하고 있던 적이 있어요.

And on top of that, it was Amazon rain forest.

그 뿐만 아니라, 아마존 열대 우림이었죠.

Pshh, pouring rain, couldn't see a thing.

비가 너무 내려서 앞을 볼 수도 없었어요.

The temperature differential made it all white. It was a whiteout.

기온 차가 너무 심한 나머지 모두 하얗게만 보였죠.

Intense.

장난 아니었어요.

Now, after years of work,

몇 년이 지난 지금,

I'll soon be submitting my geophysical and geochemical studies for publication.

저의 지구 물리학 및 지구 화학적 연구 자료를 출판하려고 해요.

And I'd like to share, today, with all of you here, on the TED stage,

그리고 이 TED강연에 참가하신 여러분들께

처음으로 그 발견들을 조금 보여드리려고 합니다.

for the first time, some of these discoveries.

Well, first off, it's not a legend.

첫 번째로, 강은 전설이 아닙니다.

Surprise!

깜짝 놀라셨죠?

(Laughter)

When I first started the research,

제가 연구를 처음 시작했을 때

the satellite imagery was too low-resolution to be meaningful.

인공위성 사진의 화질이 너무 안 좋아서 잘 볼 수 없었고

There were just no good maps.

괜찮은 지도 하나 없었죠.

Thanks to the support of the Google Earth team,

구글 어스 팀의 도움으로

I now have this.

이제는 이 것이 있습니다.

Not only that, the indigenous name of the river, Shanay-timpishka,

그것 뿐만 아니라 원래 강의 이름인 샤나이-팀피쉬카는

"boiled with the heat of the sun,"

"태양 열로 끓였다"라는 뜻이 있는데,

indicating that I'm not the first to wonder why the river boils,

왜 강이 끓어오르는지 궁금했던 사람이 저 뿐만이 아니라는 말이기도 하고,

and showing that humanity has always sought to explain

인류는 주변에 있는 세상을

항상 설명하려 했다는 뜻이죠.

the world around us.

So why does the river boil?

그래서 강은 왜 끓어오르는걸까요?

(Bubbling sounds)

(끓는 소리)

It actually took me three years to get that footage.

사실 이 영상을 찍는데 3년이나 걸렸어요.

Fault-fed hot springs.

단층에서 비롯된 온천이에요.

As we have hot blood running through our veins and arteries,

우리의 혈관과 동맥에 뜨거운 피가 흐르듯이,

so, too, the earth has hot water running through its cracks and faults.

지구 또한 갈라진 단층 사이로 뜨거운 물이 흘러요.

Where these arteries come to the surface, these earth arteries,

이런 물줄기가 지면으로 올라오면

we'll get geothermal manifestations:

지열 현상이 나타나게 돼요

fumaroles, hot springs and in our case, the boiling river.

분기공, 온천, 이 경우에는 끓는 강이죠.

What's truly incredible, though, is the scale of this place.

정말 더 놀라운건 이 곳의 크기예요.

Next time you cross the road, think about this.

다음에 길을 건너실 때, 이런 생각을 해보세요.

The river flows wider than a two-lane road

강의 대부분은

2차선 도로보다 더 넓고

along most of its path.

It flows hot for 6.24 kilometers.

6.24km나 뜨겁게 흘러요.

Truly impressive.

정말 대단하죠.

지금 이 무대보다 더 큰 온천들도 있고,

There are thermal pools larger than this TED stage,

and that waterfall that you see there

여기 보시는 폭포는

is six meters tall --

6미터나 되는데

and all with near-boiling water.

전부 거의 끓어오르는 뜨거운 물이죠.

We mapped the temperatures along the river,

강의 온도를 재는 게

and this was by far the most demanding part of the fieldwork.

현장 작업 중 가장 힘든 일이었지만

And the results were just awesome.

결과물이 너무 굉장했어요.

Sorry -- the geoscientist in me coming out.

죄송해요. 지질학자라 어쩔 수 없네요.

And it showed this amazing trend.

이런 놀라운 패턴을 보였죠.

You see, the river starts off cold.

강물은 처음 차갑게 시작해서

It then heats up, cools back down, heats up, cools back down,

뜨거워졌다가, 다시 식었다가, 뜨거워졌다가, 다시 식은 다음,

heats up again, and then has this beautiful decay curve

또 다시 뜨거워진 후, 이 아름다운 감소 곡선을 그리고

until it smashes into this cold river.

차가운 강으로 세차게 떨어지죠.

Now, I understand not all of you are geothermal scientists,

여러분 모두가 지구 과학자는 아니니

so to put it in more everyday terms:

일상 언어로 다시 말씀드릴게요

Everyone loves coffee.

커피는 누구나 다 좋아하죠.

Yes? Good.

그쵸? 좋아요.

Your regular cup of coffee, 54 degrees C,

커피 한 잔은 대부분 섭씨 54도,

an extra-hot one, well, 60.

좀 더 뜨거운 컵은 60도 정도죠.

So, put in coffee shop terms,

커피로 설명해본다면,

강은 이렇게 흘러가요.

the boiling river plots like this.

There you have your hot coffee.

여기는 뜨거운 커피,

Here you have your extra-hot coffee,

여기는 좀 더 뜨거운 커피,

and you can see that there's a bit point there

그리고 여기 한 부분에서는

where the river is still hotter than even the extra-hot coffee.

좀 더 뜨거운 커피보다 강물이 더 뜨거운게 보이죠.

And these are average water temperatures.

그리고 이건 강물의 평균 온도예요.

We took these in the dry season to ensure the purest geothermal temperatures.

제일 정확한 지열 온도를 재기 위해 일부러 건기에 온도를 쟀거든요.

But there's a magic number here that's not being shown,

하지만 여기 보이지 않는 특별한 숫자가 있어요.

그 숫자는 섭씨 47도인데,

and that number is 47 degrees C,

because that's where things start to hurt,

그 온도에서 아픈 일들이 일어나거든요.

and I know this from very personal experience.

제 개인적인 경험으로 알 수 있었죠.

Above that temperature, you don't want to get in that water.

그 온도를 넘어가면 강물로 들어가면 안돼요.

You need to be careful.

정말 조심스러워야하죠.

It can be deadly.

치명적일 수 있거든요.

I've seen all sorts of animals fall in,

많은 동물들이 물 속으로 빠지는걸 봤는데

and what's shocking to me, is the process is pretty much the same.

제가 놀랍게 생각한 건, 항상 일어나는 과정은 똑같아요.

So they fall in and the first thing to go are the eyes.

빠지고 난 다음 제일 먼저 가는게 바로 눈이에요.

Eyes, apparently, cook very quickly. They turn this milky-white color.

눈알이 제일 빨리 익어요. 우유같이 흰 색으로 변해요.

The stream is carrying them.

강물에 흘러 떠내려가며

They're trying to swim out, but their meat is cooking on the bone

헤엄쳐 나오려고 해도, 물이 너무 뜨거워서

뼈에 붙어있는 살이 익기 시작하죠.

because it's so hot.

So they're losing power, losing power,

계속해서 힘을 잃고 나면,

until finally they get to a point where hot water goes into their mouths

입 안으로 뜨거운 물이 들어가

and they cook from the inside out.

안 쪽에서부터 익기 시작하죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

A bit sadistic, aren't we?

조금 가학적이죠?

Jeez.

이런.

Leave them marinating for a little longer.

조금 더 오래두면 이런 식이죠.

What's, again, amazing are these temperatures.

다시 말씀드리자면 이 온도가 정말 놀라워요.

They're similar to things that I've seen on volcanoes all over the world

제가 전세계를 돌며 본 화산들과도 비슷하거든요.

and even super-volcanoes like Yellowstone.

심지어 옐로우 스톤같은 슈퍼화산과도 비슷해요.

But here's the thing:

하지만 이 점이 있어요.

the data is showing that the boiling river exists

이 끓어오르는 강은

화산활동과는 전혀 상관이 없어요.

independent of volcanism.

It's neither magmatic or volcanic in origin,

마그마 때문에도 아니고, 화산활동 때문에도 아니고,

and again, over 700 kilometers away from the nearest volcanic center.

앞서 말씀 드렸듯이, 제일 가까운 화산은 700킬로미터나 떨어져있어요.

How can a boiling river exist like this?

이 끓는 강은 그러면 어떻게 해서 존재하는걸까요?

I've asked geothermal experts and volcanologists for years,

지열 에너지를 연구하는 전문가와 화산학자들에게 수년간 물어왔지만,

and I'm still unable to find another non-volcanic geothermal system

아직까지 화산과 관련없는 이 정도의 규모를 가진

of this magnitude.

지열 시스템은 본 적이 없어요.

특별한거죠.

It's unique.

It's special on a global scale.

세계적으로 특별해요.

So, still -- how does it work?

하지만 그래도 어떻게 이럴 수 있죠?

Where do we get this heat?

이 열은 어디서 오는걸까요?

There's still more research to be done

이 시스템을 더 잘 이해하고 문제를 통제하려면

to better constrain the problem and better understand the system,

아직 해야할 연구가 많이 있지만

but from what the data is telling us now,

지금까지 본 자료를 보면

it looks to be the result of a large hydrothermal system.

큰 열수성 활동에 의한 결과물인 것 같아요.

Basically, it works like this:

간단하게 말씀드리자면 이래요.

So, the deeper you go into the earth, the hotter it gets.

지구 안으로 더 깊이 갈수록 더 뜨거워지죠.

We refer to this as the geothermal gradient.

이 현상을 '지온 변화도'라고 해요.

The waters could be coming from as far away as glaciers in the Andes,

안데스 산맥의 빙하처럼 멀리 있는 곳에서 온 물이어도

then seeping down deep into the earth

더 깊은 땅으로 스며든 다음

and coming out to form the boiling river

끓은 강을 만들기 위해 다시 올라온 후,

after getting heated up from the geothermal gradient,

이 특별한 지질구조로 인한

지온 변화도에 의해 물이 뜨거워지는거죠.

all due to this unique geologic setting.

Now, we found that in and around the river --

다음 말씀 드릴 것은

내셔널 지오그래픽에서 오신 스펜서 웰스 박사님과

this is working with colleagues

from National Geographic, Dr. Spencer Wells,

UC 데이비스의 존 아이젠 박사님과

and Dr. Jon Eisen from UC Davis --

합작하여 얻은 결과물인데요.

we genetically sequenced the extremophile lifeforms

강 주변에 서식하는 극한성 생물들의 유전자를 연구해보니

living in and around the river, and have found new lifeforms,

새로운 생물 형태를 발견할 수 있었어요.

unique species living in the boiling river.

이 뜨거운 강 안에서 사는 새로운 생물이죠.

But again, despite all of these studies, all of these discoveries and the legends,

하지만 이러한 연구와 발견, 전설이 있어도

아직 남아있는 의문이 있죠.

a question remains:

What is the significance of the boiling river?

끓어오르는 강의 의미는 무엇일까?

What is the significance of this stationary cloud

정글 속 한곳에만 항상 떠있는

이 구름의 의미는 무엇일까?

that always hovers over this patch of jungle?

And what is the significance

그리고 어린 기억 속 전설에 남아있는

of a detail in a childhood legend?

일부의 의미는 무엇일까?

To the shaman and his community, it's a sacred site.

주술사와 그의 민족에게는 신성한 곳이죠.

To me, as a geoscientist,

저같은 지구 과학자에겐

it's a unique geothermal phenomenon.

특별한 지열 현상이고요.

But to the illegal loggers and cattle farmers,

하지만 불법 벌목꾼들과 농장주에게는

it's just another resource to exploit.

착취할 수 있는 또 하나의 자원일 뿐이죠.

And to the Peruvian government, it's just another stretch

페루 정부에게는

개발할 수 있는 또 하나의 비보호 지역이고요.

of unprotected land ready for development.

My goal is to ensure that whoever controls this land

제 목표는 그 누가 이 땅을 지배하던,

understands the boiling river's uniqueness and significance.

이 끓는 강의 의미와 특별함을 반드시 이해시키는 것입니다.

Because that's the question,

그게 의미있는

질문이니까요.

one of significance.

And the thing there is,

중요한 점은 그 의미의 뜻을

우리가 정한다는 것입니다.

we define significance.

It's us. We have that power.

바로 우리에게 그럴 수 있는 힘이 있잖아요.

We are the ones who draw that line

신성함과 사소함의 기준을 긋는 이들은

between the sacred and the trivial.

바로 우리니까요.

And in this age,

모든게 다 측정되고, 연구되고,

where everything seems mapped, measured and studied,

지도로 그려지는

in this age of information,

이 정보의 시대에서,

I remind you all that discoveries are not just made

발견이란 알려지지 않은 어둠 속에서만 만들어지는게 아니라

in the black void of the unknown

넘쳐나는 자료로 인한 백색 잡음 속에서 만들어진다는 걸

but in the white noise of overwhelming data.

다시 한번 알려드리고 싶습니다.

There remains so much to explore.

아직 탐험해야할 것들이 너무 많아요.

We live in an incredible world.

우린 정말 놀라운 세상에서 살고 있어요.

So go out.

그러니 밖으로 나가세요.

Be curious.

호기심을 가지세요.

Because we do live in a world

아직도 우리는

주술사가 정글의 영혼을 위해 노래를 부르고,

where shamans still sing to the spirits of the jungle,

where rivers do boil

강이 끓어오르고,

and where legends do come to life.

전설이 실화가 되는 세상에서 살고 있으니까요.
