I was raised in Seoul, Korea,

저는 한국의 서울에서 자랐습니다.

and moved to New York City in 1999 to attend college.

그리고 1999년에 대학을 다니기 위해 뉴욕으로 건너왔죠.

I was pre-med at the time,

저는 그 때 의대생이었고

and I thought I would become a surgeon

외과 의사가 될 것이라고 생각했었어요.

because I was interested in anatomy

해부학에 관심이 있었거든요.

and dissecting animals really piqued my curiosity.

동물들을 해부하는 게 호기심을 자극했죠.

At the same time, I fell in love with New York City.

또 저는 뉴욕시를 굉장히 좋아하기도 했어요.

I started to realize that I could look at the whole city

거기서 저는 도시 전체를 하나의 유기체로 볼 수 있다는 것을

as a living organism.

깨닫기 시작했죠.

I wanted to dissect it

저는 도시라는 생명체를 해부하고 싶었고

and look into its unseen layers.

보이지 않는 내부의 층을 알고 싶었습니다.

And the way to it, for me,

이걸 가능하게 해준 것은

was through artistic means.

바로 예술이라는 수단이었죠.

So, eventually I decided to pursue an MFA instead of an M.D.

결국 저는 의사 학위 대신 예술 석사 학위를 따기로 결심하였습니다

and in grad school I became interested

그래서 예술 대학원에 입학한 후로는

in creatures that dwell in the hidden corners of the city.

도시의 후미진 골목의 생명들에 주의를 기울이기 시작했습니다.

In New York City, rats are part of commuters' daily lives.

특히 뉴욕에서 쥐는 일상적인 도시적 삶의 한 부분이죠.

Most people ignore them or are frightened of them.

하지만 보통 사람들은 쥐들을 무시하거나 또한 무서워하죠.

But I took a liking to them

하지만 저는 쥐들이 맘에 들었어요.

because they dwell on the fringes of society.

왜냐하면 걔내들은 사회의 변두리에 속하니까요.

And even though they're used in labs to promote human lives,

사람 몸을 대신해 늘 몰모트로 희생됨에도 불구하고

they're also considered pests.

우리는 늘 쥐를 더러운 동물로만 인식합니다.

I also started looking around in the city

그래서 저는 뉴욕의 구석진 곳에서

and trying to photograph them.

쥐들을 사진에 담고자 애를 썼습니다.

One day, in the subway, I was snapping pictures of the tracks

언젠가는 지하철 선로를 촬영하고 있었어요.

hoping to catch a rat or two,

쥐 한두마리쯤 볼 수 있길 기대하면서 말이죠.

and a man came up to me and said,

그런데 한 남자가 제가 와 말하더군요.

"You can't take photographs here.

"여기서 사진 찍으면

The MTA will confiscate your camera."

지하철 직원이 와서 카메라 압수해가요!."

I was quite shocked by that,

깜짝 놀랐어요.

and thought to myself, "Well, OK then.

그래서 대신 "차라리 그냥 쥐를 한번

I'll follow the rats."

쫓아가 보자"고 결심했습니다.

Then I started going into the tunnels,

터널을 따라 들어가보니

which made me realize that there's a whole new dimension to the city

뉴욕시의 전혀 새로운 차원이 존재하더군요. 전에는 상상조차 못했어요.

that I never saw before and most people don't get to see.

저 뿐 아니라 대부분의 사람들도 볼 일이 없었던 그러한 차원이었죠.

Around the same time, I met like-minded individuals

그 시기 쯤 해서, 전 저와 마음이 맞는 사람들을 만났습니다.

who call themselves urban explorers, adventurers, spelunkers,

그들은 자신들을 도시 탐험가, 모험가, 동굴 탐험가,

guerrilla historians, etc.

게릴라 역사가 등의 이름으로 부릅니다.

I was welcomed into this loose, Internet-based network

저는 정기적으로 도시의 폐허를 탐험하는 사람들의

of people who regularly explore urban ruins

인터넷 모임에 참여하기 시작했죠.

such as abandoned subway stations,

예를 들어 버려진 지하철 역이나

tunnels, sewers, aqueducts,

터널, 하수구, 수로,

factories, hospitals, shipyards and so on.

공장, 병원, 조선소 등등의 폐허를 다니는 거죠.

When I took photographs in these locations,

하지만 이런 곳들에서 사진을 찍으면서

I felt there was something missing in the pictures.

맘 한구석에서 저는 무엇인가 빠진 것 같다는 느낌을 받곤 했죠.

Simply documenting these soon-to-be-demolished structures

단순히 곧 무너질 그런 구조물들을 기록하는 건

wasn't enough for me.

충분치 않다는 느낌이었달까요.

So I wanted to create a fictional character

그래서 저는 가상의 인물이나

or an animal that dwells in these underground spaces,

지하 세계에 사는 동물을 창조하고 싶었습니다

and the simplest way to do it, at the time,

그리고 당시에 가장 간단한 방법은

was to model myself.

제가 모델이 되는 일이었죠

I decided against clothing

저는 옷을 입지 않기로 했어요.

because I wanted the figure to be without any cultural implications

왜냐하면 어떤 문화적 요소나 특정 시대를 나타내는 요소는 가급적이면

or time-specific elements.

배제하길 원했거든요.

I wanted a simple way to represent a living body

저는 이 음습하고 더러운에서 살고 있는 신체를 표현할 수 있는

inhabiting these decaying, derelict spaces.

간단한 방법을 원했어요.

This was taken in the Riviera Sugar Factory in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

사진 촬영은 브루클린의 레드훅에 있는 리비에라 설탕 공장에서 했습니다.

It's now an empty, six-acre lot

그곳은 이제 텅 빈 6 에이커 정도의 구역으로

waiting for a shopping mall right across from the new Ikea.

이케아 매장 건너편에 새로운 쇼핑몰이 들어설 곳이었습니다

I was very fond of this space

저는 그 장소를 굉장히 좋아했었는데

because it's the first massive industrial complex I found on my own

왜냐하면 그곳이 저 스스로 처음 찾은 버려진,

that is abandoned.

거대 복합 공장단지 였기 때문이죠.

When I first went in, I was scared,

처음 거기 갔을 땐 무서웠어요.

because I heard dogs barking and I thought they were guard dogs.

개들이 짖는 소리가 들렸는데 경비견들인 줄 알았거든요.

But they happened to be wild dogs living there,

하지만 그 개들은 그 부지에 사는 들개더군요.

and it was right by the water,

그 곳은 물가 바로 옆이어서인지

so there were swans and ducks swimming around

백조와 오리들도 헤엄치고 다니고

and trees growing everywhere

나무도 드문드문 있었죠.

and bees nesting in the sugar barrels.

또 벌들이 꿀단지에서 살고 있었고요.

The nature had really reclaimed the whole complex.

자연이 단지 전체를 완전히 바꾸어놓은 것 같았습니다.

And, in a way, I wanted the human figure in the picture

그런 점에서 저는 사람의 형상이 사진에 담기기를 원했어요.

to become a part of that nature.

자연의 일부분이 되기 위해서요.

When I got comfortable in the space,

그 장소가 편안해지니까

it also felt like a big playground.

그곳이 또 커다란 놀이터같이 느껴지더군요.

I would climb up the tanks and hop across exposed beams

전 탱크 위를 오르기도 하고 드러나있는 들보로 뛰어다녔어요.

as if I went back in time and became a child again.

마치 다시 어린아이라도 된 것 처럼 말이죠.

This was taken in the old Croton Aqueduct,

이 사진은 구 크로턴 수로에서 찍은 것입니다.

which supplied fresh water to New York City for the first time.

처음으로 뉴욕시에 담수를 공급했던 수로였죠.

The construction began in 1837.

수로 건설은 1837년에 시작되었습니다.

It lasted about five years.

5년간 지속되었고요.

It got abandoned when the new Croton Aqueducts opened in 1890.

신 크로턴 수로가 1890년에 문을 열자, 곧 버려졌습니다.

When you go into spaces like this,

사실 이런 장소에 가는 것은

you're directly accessing the past,

직접 과거에 가는 것과도 마찬가지예요.

because they sit untouched for decades.

왜냐하면 이들은 그 상태 고대로 지금까지 방치돼 왔거든요.

I love feeling the aura of a space that has so much history.

역사를 지닌 공간이 가진 특유의 아우라를 좋아했어요.

Instead of looking at reproductions of it at home,

그냥 집에서 사진 같은 복제물을 보는 대신,

you're actually feeling the hand-laid bricks

손으로 쌓아올린 벽돌들을 실제로 느끼고

and shimmying up and down narrow cracks

좁은 틈 사이로 춤 추듯 돌아다녀도 보고

and getting wet and muddy

진흙투성이가 되보기도 하고

and walking in a dark tunnel with a flashlight.

전등을 가지고 동굴탐험도 할 수 있으니까요.

This is a tunnel underneath Riverside Park.

이것은 리버사이드 공원 지하의 터널인데요,

It was built in the 1930s by Robert Moses.

1930년대에 로버트 모세가 지었습니다.

The murals were done by a graffiti artist

벽화들은 낙서 예술가들이 그렸는데요

to commemorate the hundreds of homeless people

터널에서부터 좇겨난 노숙자들을 기념하려고

that got relocated from the tunnel in 1991

1991년 비가 새서 터널이 다시 열렸을 때

when the tunnel reopened for trains.

완성했다고 합니다.

Walking in this tunnel is very peaceful.

이 터널 안을 걷는 느낌은 굉장히 고요했어요.

There's nobody around you,

주위에는 아무도 없고

and you hear the kids playing in the park above you,

천장에서는 제 발 밑에 뭐가 있는지 알길이 없는 아이들이

completely unaware of what's underneath.

신나게 뛰어 노는 소리가 들려왔죠.

When I was going out a lot to these places,

한창 이런 곳에 드나들 당시 저는

I was feeling a lot of anxiety and isolation

걱정도 많았고 외롭기도 또 많이 외로웠었어요.

because I was in a solitary phase in my life,

삶에 있어 참 외로운 시기였죠.

and I decided to title my series "Naked City Spleen,"

그래서 사진집의 제목을 '벌거벗은 도시의 우수'로 정했어요.

which references Charles Baudelaire.

샤를 보들레르에서 따와서 말이죠.

"Naked City" is a nickname for New York,

'벌거벗은 도시'는 뉴욕의 별명이구요

and "Spleen" embodies the melancholia and inertia

'울화, 우울'은 도시 공간에서 소외감을 느끼는 데서

that come from feeling alienated in an urban environment.

오는 우수와 무기력함을 상징합니다.

This is the same tunnel.

이건 아까 그 터널이에요.

You see the sunbeams coming from the ventilation ducts

여러분은 환기관에서 새어나오는 햇살을 보고 계십니다.

and the train approaching.

지하철이 막 들어오고 있네요.

This is a tunnel that's abandoned in Hell's Kitchen.

이것은 '헬스키친'에 버려진 터널입니다

I was there alone, setting up,

저는 거기서 장치를 설치하면서 혼자 있었는데

and a homeless man approached.

노숙자 한명이 다가오더군요.

I was basically intruding in his living space.

생각해보니 제가 그의 거주지를 침범한 셈이더군요.

I was really frightened at first,

좀 놀랐죠.

but I calmly explained to him that I was working on an art project

그래서 침착하게 사진 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다고 말씀을 드렸는데

and he didn't seem to mind

별 신경을 쓰는것 같지는 않았죠.

and so I went ahead and put my camera on self-timer

그래서 저는 일을 계속 하며 카메라 타이머를 맞추어놓고는

and ran back and forth.

앞뒤로 뛰어다녔죠.

And when I was done, he actually offered me his shirt

제가 작업을 마치자 어쩐 일인지 그 분은 자기 옷을 제게 권했어요.

to wipe off my feet

제 발을 닦으라고요.

and kindly walked me out.

그리고는 친절하게 절 지나가셨죠.

It must have been a very unusual day for him.

어쩌면 그 날은 그 분께 굉장히 특별한 날이 아니었나 싶데요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

One thing that struck me, after this incident,

이 일 후에 제가 얻은 깨달음은

was that a space like that holds so many deleted memories of the city.

그 폐허 같은 공간들이 도시의 잊혀진 기억들을 참 많이 간직하고 있다는 것이었습니다.

That homeless man, to me, really represented

제게 있어 그 노숙자 분은 도시에서 잊혀져있던 부분이

an element of the unconscious of the city.

어떤 것인지를 말해 주고 있었어요.

He told me that he was abused above ground

그 분은 '지상 세계'에서 고통 당하셨다고 말했죠.

and was once in Riker's Island,

리커라고 하는 섬에서도 그랬고,

and at last he found peace and quiet in that space.

그랬던 그 분이 마침내 평화를 찾은 곳이 바로 거기라 하더군요.

The tunnel was once built for the prosperity of the city,

그 터널은 한때 도시의 번영을 위해서 지어졌지만

but is now a sanctuary for outcasts,

지금은 도시민들의 일상으로부터 완전히 잊혀져버린

who are completely forgotten in the average urban dweller's everyday life.

추방자들을 위한 안식처가 되었죠.

This is underneath my alma mater, Columbia University.

이것은 저의 모교인 컬럼비아 대학의 지하입니다.

The tunnels are famous for having been used

이 터널은 맨하튼 프로젝트 개발 당시 쓰엿던 곳으로

during the development of the Manhattan Project.

유명합니다.

This particular tunnel is interesting

이 터널은 독특한 사연이 있죠.

because it shows the original foundations of Bloomingdale Insane Asylum,

블루밍데일이라는 정신 병동이 처음으로 설립된 곳이거든요.

which was demolished in 1890

그 정신 병원은 1890년에 컬럼비아 대학이

when Columbia moved in.

들어서면서 철거됐죠.

This is the New York City Farm Colony,

이것은 스태튼섬의 달동네 같은 곳으로

which was a poorhouse in Staten Island

팜 콜로니(Farm Colony)라는 곳입니다.

from the 1890s to the 1930s.

1890년부터 1930년대까지 존속했죠.

Most of my photos are set in places

대부분의 제 사진들은 최소 몇십년 동안은

that have been abandoned for decades,

버려져왔던 공간들에서 촬영되었습니다.

but this is an exception.

이 사진만 빼놓구요.

This children's hospital was closed in 1997;

이 아동 병원은 1997년에 문을 닫았습니다.

it's located in Newark.

뉴어크 시에 위치해있었죠.

When I was there three years ago,

3년전에 제가 거기 갔을 때

the windows were broken and the walls were peeling,

창문들은 깨져있었고 벽들들은 다 벗겨져있었어요.

but everything was left there as it was.

하지만 모든 것들이 예전 모습 그대로였죠.

You see the autopsy table, morgue trays, x-ray machines

여기 해부대, 시체보관함, 엑스레이 기계들, 그리고

and even used utensils,

실제 사용됐었던 기구들까지도 보입니다.

which you see on the autopsy table.

해부대 위에 있을 만한 물건들이죠.

After exploring recently-abandoned buildings,

이렇게 한동안 버려진 것들과 함께하다보니

I felt that everything could fall into ruins very fast:

새것이 얼마나 금새 낡은 것이 될 수 있는지를 실감하겠더군요.

your home, your office, a shopping mall, a church --

집, 사무실, 쇼핑몰, 교회, 등등..

any man-made structures around you.

다들 금방 낡아버리죠.

I was reminded of how fragile our sense of security is

변치 않는 것에 대한 우리 믿음이 얼마나 허망한지

and how vulnerable people truly are.

또 인간이 세월 앞에서 얼마나 나약한 존재인지를 절감했어요.

I love to travel,

저는 여행을 좋아합니다.

and Berlin has become one of my favorite cities.

베를린은 제가 좋아하는 도시중 하나구요.

It's full of history,

베를린은 역사가 풍부해요.

and also full of underground bunkers

지하 벙커라든가 전쟁이 남긴 폐허같은

and ruins from the war.

역사의 흔적이 많이 남아 있죠.

This was taken under a homeless asylum

이 사진은 1885년에 설립된 1,100명의 규모의

built in 1885 to house 1,100 people.

노숙자 시설 지하에서 촬영한 것입니다.

I saw the structure while I was on the train,

기차를 타고 가다 우연히 이 곳을 발견하고는,

and I got off at the next station and met people there

바로 다음 역에서 내려 거기 있던 사람들을 만나봤죠.

that gave me access to their catacomb-like basement,

그분들이 저를 지하에 있는 납골당 같은 곳으로 안내해 주시더군요.

which was used for ammunition storage during the war

그 지하실은 한 때 전쟁 중엔 무기 저장고였다가

and also, at some point, to hide groups of Jewish refugees.

나중에는 유대인들의 피난처로도 쓰이기도 했대요.

This is the actual catacombs in Paris.

이것은 프랑스 파리에 있는 실제 납골당입니다.

I explored there extensively

출입 제한지역까지 겁도없이

in the off-limits areas

구석구석을 다 뒤져봤죠.

and fell in love right away.

안 좋아할 수가 없는 곳이더군요.

There are more than 185 miles of tunnels,

터널들이 여럿 있는데 다 합치면 총 길이가

and only about a mile is open to the public as a museum.

300km나 되지만 공개된 건 고작 1.5km 정도였죠.

The first tunnels date back to 60 B.C.

최초의 터널들은 기원은 기원전 60년까지

They were consistently dug as limestone quarries

거슬러 올라가는데, 그때 이래로 18세기까지

and by the 18th century,

석회석 채석장으로 쓰였습니다.

the caving-in of some of these quarries posed safety threats,

하지만 그 때 이래 더이상 계속 파는 건 위험하다는 진단이 내려져

so the government ordered reinforcing of the existing quarries

정부는 기존의 채굴장들을 메우라 명령을 내렸죠.

and dug new observation tunnels

그리고는 전체 굴맥 관리 차원에서

in order to monitor and map the whole place.

관측 터널들을 새로이 팠습니다.

As you can see, the system is very complex and vast.

굴들이 보시다시피 굉장히 복잡하고 광대합니다.

It's very dangerous to get lost in there.

여기서 길 잃으면 큰 일 납니다.

And at the same time,

여튼 그 당시에

there was a problem in the city with overflowing cemeteries.

파리 시에는 묘지 과잉 문제도 있었어요.

So the bones were moved from the cemeteries into the quarries,

그래서 뼈들이 공동 묘지로부터 채굴장으로 옮겨졌었죠.

making them into the catacombs.

그래서 오늘날 납골당이 된 거고요.

The remains of over six million people are housed in there,

6백만이넘는 유해가 안치되어 있는데,

some over 1,300 years old.

일부는 1,300년이나 되었죠.

This was taken under the Montparnasse Cemetery

이 사진은 몽파르나스 묘지라고, 파리 시내 대부분의

where most of the ossuaries are located.

납골당이 위치한 곳에서 찍는 겁니다.

There are also phone cables that were used in the '50s

50년대 전화 케이블선들도 있고

and many bunkers from the World War II era.

2차대전 때 쓰였던 벙커들도 많죠.

This is a German bunker.

이것은 독일 벙커입니다.

Nearby there's a French bunker,

가까이엔 프랑스 벙커도 있구요.

and the whole tunnel system is so complex

물론 이 전체 터널은 굉장히 복잡해서

that the two parties never met.

두 진영은 절대 서로 만날 수 없었습니다.

The tunnels are famous for having been used by the Resistance,

이 굴들은 빅토르 위고의 소설<레미제라블>에 나오는

which Victor Hugo wrote about in "Les Miserables."

레지스탕스들이 실제로 쓰던 곳으로 유명하죠.

And I saw a lot of graffiti from the 1800s, like this one.

여기서 이런 19세기 당시의 벽화 낙서도 많이 봤답니다.

After exploring the underground of Paris,

어쨌든 그렇게 파리 지하를 탐사하고나서는

I decided to climb up,

위로 올라가기로 결심했습니다.

and I climbed a Gothic monument

그리고 파리시 한가운데

that's right in the middle of Paris.

있는 고딕 양식의 탑에 들어가 봤죠.

This is the Tower of Saint Jacques.

바로 생쟈크 탑입니다.

It was built in the early 1500s.

16세기 초에 지어졌죠.

I don't recommend sitting on a gargoyle in the middle of January, naked.

한겨울에 발가벗고 가고일에 앉는 짓따위는 별로 추천드리고 싶지 않네요.

It was not very comfortable. (Laughter)

무척이나 불편하더군요.

And all this time,

어쨌든 그때까지

I never saw a single rat in any of these places,

이 장소들에서는 단 한 마리의 쥐도 못봤어요.

until recently, when I was in the London sewers.

최근에 런던 하수구에 가기 전까지는요.

This was probably the toughest place to explore.

아마 세상에서 가장 험난한 곳일 거예요.

I had to wear a gas mask because of the toxic fumes --

유해 가스 때문에 방독면을 써야 햇습니다.

I guess, except for in this picture.

이 사진 찍을 때만 빼고 말이죠.

And when the tides of waste matter come in

이 곳에서 폐수가 들어 찰 때에는

it sounds as if a whole storm is approaching you.

꼭 폭풍이 다가오는 것 같은 소리가 들려와요.

This is a still from a film I worked on recently, called "Blind Door."

이 사진은 '블라인드 도어'라고 최근에 작업한 영화 스틸 사진입니다.

I've become more interested in capturing movement and texture.

움직임과 질감을 포착하는 것에 더욱 흥미를 갖게 됐죠.

And the 16mm black-and-white film gave a different feel to it.

또 16mm의 흑백 필름은 뭔가 다른 느낌을 줍니다.

And this is the first theater project I worked on.

이건 제가 작업했던 첫번째 영화 프로젝트입니다.

I adapted and produced "A Dream Play" by August Strindberg.

어거스트 스트린버그의 'A Dream Play'를 각색하고 제작하기도 했는데

It was performed last September one time only

작년 9월에 딱 한번만 공연했죠.

in the Atlantic Avenue tunnel in Brooklyn,

브루클린의 아틀란틱 애비뉴 터널에서요.

which is considered to be the oldest underground train tunnel in the world,

1844년에 지어진 세계에서 가장 오래된 터널이라고 여겨지는

built in 1844.

바로 그 터널에서 말이죠.

I've been leaning towards more collaborative projects like these, lately.

최근에는 이렇게 여럿이 모여 하는 프로젝트를 많이 하고 있어요.

But whenever I get a chance I still work on my series.

그렇지만 기회가 날 때마다 여전히 제 시리즈에 주력합니다.

The last place I visited

제가 마지막으로 방문했던 장소는

was the Mayan ruins of Copan, Honduras.

온두라스 코판에 있는 마야 유적지였습니다.

This was taken inside an archaeological tunnel in the main temple.

이것은 주 사원 안에 있는 고고학적인 터널에서 찍은 것입니다.

I like doing more than just exploring these spaces.

이런 장소를 탐험하는 것만이 중요한건 아닌 것 같습니다.

I feel an obligation to animate and humanize these spaces continually

이렇게 버려진 장소들이 가진 기억들이 영영 사라지지 않고 창조적으로

in order to preserve their memories in a creative way --

계승되려면 우리가 이런 장소들을 적극적으로 인간화하고 또

before they're lost forever.

활성화 할 필요가 있다고 생각합니다.
