I was worried about vaginas.

I was worried what we think about vaginas

and even more worried that we don't think about them.

I was worried about my own vagina.

전 제 음부에 대해 걱정했어요.

It needed a context, a culture, a community of other vaginas.

다른 분들의 얘기를 듣고, 공동의 문화와 공동체를 가질 필요가 있었어요.

There is so much darkness and secrecy surrounding them.

음부는 어둠과 비밀로 둘러싸여 있어요.

Like the Bermuda Triangle, nobody ever reports back from there.

마치 한 번 가면 돌아온 이 없다는 버뮤다 삼각지 같은 곳이에요.

(Laughter)

In the first place, it's not so easy to even find your vagina.

(웃음)

우선 자기 음부를 보기 조차 어려워요.

Women go days, weeks, months, without looking at it.

여자들은 음부를 보지 않고 그냥 일상을 보내요.

I interviewed a high-powered businesswoman;

한 권위있는 여성 사업가에게 물었더니

she told me she didn't have time.

그럴 시간이 없다더군요.

"Looking at your vagina," she said, "is a full day's work."

"제 음부를 찾아보라뇨? 종일 걸릴 걸요." 라더군요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"You've got to get down there on your back, in front of a mirror,

"우선 거울 앞에 엎드려 벌렁 누워야 되잖아요.

전신 거울이라면 더 좋고요.

You've got to get in the perfect position with the perfect light,

완벽한 조명 아래 완벽한 자세를 취해야 하잖아요.

which then becomes shadowed by the angle you're at.

You're twisting your head up, arching your back, it's exhausting."

몸을 비틀어 고개를 들어야 하는데, 진 빼는 거죠."

She was busy; she didn't have time.

그녀는 바빠서 그럴 시간이 없었습니다.

So I decided to talk to women about their vaginas.

그래서 저는 여성들에게 음부에 대해 말해주리라 결심했어요.

They began as casual vagina interviews,

가벼운 인터뷰에서 시작된 일이

and they turned into vagina monologues.

버자이너 모놀로그라는 작품이 되었어요.

I talked with over 200 women.

200명 이상의 여성과 인터뷰 했죠.

I talked to older women, younger women,

married women, lesbians, single women.

늙은 여성에서부터 젊은 여성, 기혼, 레즈비언, 독신,

I talked to corporate professionals, college professors, actors, sex workers.

전문직, 교수, 배우, 매춘 여성,

I talked to African-American women, Asian-American women,

흑인계 미국인, 아시아계 미국인,

Native-American women, Caucasian women, Jewish women.

아메리칸 인디언, 백인, 유대인까지요.

OK, at first women were a little shy, a little reluctant to talk.

그래요. 처음에는 모두 약간 수줍어서 말하길 꺼리더군요.

Once they got going, you couldn't stop them.

하지만 일단 말문이 터지면 끝이 없어요.

Women love to talk about their vaginas, they do.

모두들 자기 음부에 대해 말하고 싶어해요. 정말로요.

Mainly because no one's ever asked them before.

왜냐하면 여태 아무도 물어보지 않았으니까요.

(Laughter)

Let's just start with the word "vagina" -- vagina, vagina.

(웃음)

음부라는 이 단어부터 볼까요. 음부, 음부.

It sounds like an infection, at best.

감염같이 꼭 무슨 의료기 이름 같죠.

Maybe a medical instrument.

"Hurry, nurse, bring the vagina!"

"간호사 서둘러! 음부를 가져와."

(Laughter)

Vagina, vagina, vagina.

(웃음)

음부, 음부, 음부, 아무리 되풀이해봐도

It doesn't matter how many times you say the word,

it never sounds like a word you want to say.

입에 담고 싶은 표현이 아니에요.

It's a completely ridiculous, totally un-sexy word.

완전히 멍청하고, 전혀 섹시하지 않은 표현이에요.

If you use it during sex, trying to be politically correct,

남자와 관계 가지는 중에 예의바른 표현을 쓴답시고

"Darling, would you stroke my vagina,"

"자기야, 내 음부를 만져죠." 이러면 완전 분위기 깨갰죠.

you kill the act right there.

(Laughter)

I'm worried what we call them and don't call them.

안 부를 수도 없고, 막상 부르려니 애매하더군요.

In Great Neck, New York, they call it a Pussycat.

뉴욕에서는 이걸 야옹이라고 하더군요.

A woman told me there her mother used to tell her,

어떤 분은 어머니께서 늘 그러셨데요.

"Don't wear panties, dear, underneath your pajamas.

"잠옷 바지 안에 팬티 입지 말아라. 얘야.

You need to air out your Pussycat."

우리 야옹이가 갑갑하잖니."

(Laughter)

In Westchester, they call it a Pooki,

웨스트체스터에서는 푸키라고 하고, 뉴저지에서는 멍청이,

in New Jersey, a twat.

There's Powderbox, derriere, a Pooky, a Poochi, a Poopi,

I am worried about vaginas.

(웃음)

정말 걱정이에요.

This is how the "Vagina Monologues" begins.

버자이너 모놀로그는 이렇게 시작되었어요.

But it really didn't begin there.

사실은 그보다도 전에 한 여성분과 나눈 대화에서 이 모든 일이 촉발되었죠.

It began with a conversation with a woman.

We were having a conversation about menopause,

우린 폐경기 얘기를 하다가

and we got onto the subject of her vagina,

주제가 주제이니만큼 자연스레

which you'll do if you're talking about menopause.

곧 여자의 음부에 대한 이야길 나눴죠.

And she said things that really shocked me about her vagina --

그런데 충격적인 얘길 하더군요.

that it was dried-up and finished and dead --

거기가 말라 죽어버렸다는 거에요.

and I was kind of shocked.

So I said to a friend casually,

다른 친구에게도 편하게 물어봤어요. "너는 어떻게 생각해?"

"Well, what do you think about your vagina?"

And that woman said something more amazing,

그랬더니 더 충격적인 얘기를 꺼냈어요.

and then the next woman said something more amazing,

다른 여성 분에게 물었더니 더욱더 충격적인 말을 했고요.

and before I knew it, every woman was telling me

모두들 제게 자신의 음부에 얽힌 놀랄만한 이야기들을

I had to talk to somebody about their vagina

다른 이에게 전해줘야 한다고 했죠.

because they had an amazing story,

그래서 음부에 빨려들어 버렸어요.

and I was sucked down the vagina trail.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I really haven't gotten off of it.

그리고 정말 여기서 빠져나올 수가 없었죠.

I think if you had told me when I was younger

만약 시작할 무렵에 나중에 신발 가게에서

that I was going to grow up, and be in shoe stores,

and people would scream out, "There she is, the Vagina Lady!"

"저기 음부 얘기한 여자다!" 라는 말을 들을 줄 알았다면

I don't know that that would have been my life ambition.

이 일에 손도 대지 않았을 거에요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But I want to talk a little bit about happiness,

하지만 전 오늘 음부로 가는 여정에서 발견한

and the relationship to this whole vagina journey,

행복에 대해 얘기하고 싶네요.

because it has been an extraordinary journey

이 특별한 여행은 8년 전에 시작되었거든요.

that began eight years ago.

I think before I did the "Vagina Monologues,"

버자이너 모놀로그를 쓰기 전에는

I didn't really believe in happiness.

행복을 그리 믿지 않았어요.

I thought that only idiots were happy, to be honest.

솔직히 바보들이나 행복을 믿는다 생각했죠.

I remember when I started practicing Buddhism 14 years ago,

14년 전에 불교 수행을 시작했을 때가 생각나네요.

and I was told that the end of this practice was to be happy,

불교 수행을 하면 행복해진다고 하더군요.

I said, "How could you be happy and live in this world of suffering

"인생은 고통이라면서 어떻게 행복해지지?" 라고 생각했어요.

and live in this world of pain?"

전 행복을 다른 것으로 잘못 이해하고 있었어요.

I mistook happiness for a lot of other things,

like numbness or decadence or selfishness.

무감각, 퇴폐, 이기심 같은 걸로요.

And what happened through the course of the "Vagina Monologues"

그러던 중 버자이너 모놀로그를 통해

and this journey is, I think I have come to understand

행복이라는 것을 조금 더

a little bit more about happiness.

이해하게 되었어요.

There are three qualities I want to talk about.

그 세 가지 특징을 말씀 드릴게요.

One is seeing what's right in front of you,

첫째, 지금 내 앞에 있는 것을 있는 그대로 보고

and talking about it, and stating it.

그에 대해 말하는 거에요. 음부 얘기를 하며 배운 것은

I think what I learned from talking about the vagina

and speaking about the vagina, is it was the most obvious thing --

음부가 나의 몸, 세상의 중심에 있다는 사실 만큼

it was right in the center of my body and the center of the world --

분명한 것이 없음에도 불구하고

and yet it was the one thing nobody talked about.

아무도 이에 대해 얘기한 적 없었다는 거에요.

The second thing is that what talking about the vagina did

둘째, 음부에 대한 얘기를 하는 것이

is it opened this door which allowed me to see

더 나은 세상을 만들 수 있는 길도

that there was a way to serve the world to make it better.

열어주었다는 겁니다.

And that's where the deepest happiness has actually come from.

지고의 행복은 거기에서 시작되었어요.

And the third principle of happiness, which I've realized recently:

그리고 세번째 행복의 원칙은 최근에야 깨달은 거에요.

Eight years ago, this momentum and this energy, this "V-wave" started --

8년 전 이 힘과 에너지, "V-파동"이라는 건(역주: 음부 Vagina의 첫 자 V)

and I can only describe it as a "V-wave" because, to be honest,

안타깝게도 이걸 "V-파동"이라고 밖에 표현할 수 없네요.

I really don't understand it completely; I feel at the service of it.

솔직히 이 힘을 이해했다기 보다, 이 힘이 가자는 대로 가고 있어요.

But this wave started, and if I question the wave,

이미 시작된 이 파동은, 이 힘을 의심하거나

or try to stop the wave or look back at the wave,

멈추려 하거나, 뒤돌아 보려고 할 때마다

I often have the experience of whiplash

위험할 정도로 저를 몰아세우는

or the potential of my neck breaking.

채찍질 같은 경험을 했어요. 하지만 파장을 믿고

But if I go with the wave,

and I trust the wave and I move with the wave,

몸을 맡기고 가면 다음 단계로 옮겨지더군요.

I go to the next place, and it happens logically and organically and truthfully.

논리적이고, 유기적이고, 진실된 절차로요.

And I started this piece, particularly with stories and narratives,

그래서 저는 이 작품을 주인공이 이야기를 들려주는 방식으로 썼어요.

and I was talking to one woman and that led to another woman

여자분들 한 분씩 만나 대화를 나누며

and that led to another woman.

이어지는 이야기들을 적어나갔고

And then I wrote those stories down,

and I put them out in front of other people.

그 이야기를 다른 분들께 보여 드렸습니다.

And every single time I did the show at the beginning,

그리고 첫 공연부터 연극이 끝날 때마다

women would literally line up after the show,

여성분들이 그야말로 줄을 섰어요.

because they wanted to tell me their stories.

자신들의 얘기를 들려주려고요.

And at first I thought, "Oh great, I'll hear about wonderful orgasms,

처음에는 '오, 그래. 굉장한 오르가즘 얘기랑

끝내주는 섹스, 자기들 음부를 어떻게 사랑하는지 얘기해주겠지' 했죠.

and great sex lives, and how women love their vaginas."

But in fact, that's not what women lined up to tell me.

그런데 알고보니 그런 얘길 하려고 줄을 선 게 아니었어요.

What women lined up to tell me was how they were raped,

줄 선 여자들은 강간 당한 얘기,

and how they were battered, and how they were beaten,

학대 당한 얘기, 폭행 당한 얘기,

and how they were gang-raped in parking lots,

주차장에서 윤간 당한 얘기,

and how they were incested by their uncles.

삼촌한테 근친상간 당한 얘기를 했죠.

And I wanted to stop doing the "Vagina Monologues,"

버자이너 모놀로그 공연을 그만두고 싶었어요.

because it felt too daunting.

겁이 났거든요. 제가 마치 끔찍한 사건을 보고도

I felt like a war photographer who takes pictures of terrible events,

도와주지 않고 사진을 찍어대는 전쟁 사진 작가가 된 것 같았죠.

but doesn't intervene on their behalf.

And so in 1997, I said, "Let's get women together.

그래서 1997년 이렇게 결심했어요. "여성들을 모으자.

What could we do with this information

폭행 피해 여성들에 관한 정보로 우리가 뭘 할 수 있을까?"

that all these women are being violated?"

And it turned out, after thinking and investigating,

고민하고 조사한 끝에 알게된 사실은,

that I discovered -- and the UN has actually said this recently --

최근 UN에서도 동일한 결과를 발표한 바 있는데,

that one out of every three women on this planet

전 세계 모든 여성의 1/3이 일생 한 번 이상

will be beaten or raped in her lifetime.

폭행이나 강간을 당한다는 사실이었습니다.

That's essentially a gender;

세상의 근원인 여성들이 말이에요.

that's essentially the resource of the planet, which is women.

So in 1997 we got all these incredible women together and we said,

그래서 1997년, 이 여성들을 모아서 물어보았어요.

"How can we use the play, this energy, to stop violence against women?"

"어떻게 이 연극, 이 힘을 폭력을 멈추는 데 사용할 수 있을까?"

And we put on one event in New York City, in the theater,

우리는 뉴욕의 한 극장에서 행사를 열었습니다.

and all these great actors came -- from Susan Sarandon,

수잔 서랜든, 글렌 클로즈, 우피 골드버그 같은

to Glenn Close, to Whoopi Goldberg --

유명 배우들도 참석한 이 날 밤, 단 한 번의 공연을 통해

and we did one performance on one evening,

이런 파장, 이 에너지에 불을 붙여주었습니다.

and that catalyzed this wave, this energy.

And within five years,

그 후 5년 간 특별한 일이 계속 되었어요.

this extraordinary thing began to happen.

One woman took that energy and she said, "I want to bring this wave,

한 여성이 이 힘을 받아 "이 힘을 대학교에

this energy, to college campuses,"

전하고 싶다"며 활동을 시작했어요.

and so she took the play and she said,

"Let's use the play and have performances once a year,

그리고 " 이 연극을 이용해서 매년 한 번 씩 퍼포먼스를 하고

where we can raise money to stop violence against women

전 세계 현지 커뮤니티에서 여성 폭력 중지를 위한

in local communities all around the world."

기금을 모으자"고 했어요.

And in one year, it went to 50 colleges, and then it expanded.

그리고 1년 만에 50개 대학에 퍼지고 계속 확장되었죠.

And over the course of the last six years,

그리고 지난 6년 간 계속 퍼지고

it's spread and it's spread and it's spread around the world.

퍼지고 또 퍼져서 전 세계로 퍼졌습니다.

What I have learned is two things:

전 두 가지를 배웠습니다. 첫째, 여성 폭력의 전염도는

one, that the epidemic of violence towards women is shocking; it's global;

충격적이었어요. 세계 도처에 퍼져 있더군요.

it is so profound and it is so devastating,

아주 뿌리 깊고 너무 파괴적이고

and it is so in every little pocket of every little crater,

우리 사회 곳곳에 너무 흔해져서

of every little society that we don't even recognize it,

더 이상 심각하게 여기지도 않을 정도니까요.

because it's become ordinary.

이 여정은 저를 아프가니스탄으로 이끌었습니다.

This journey has taken me to Afghanistan,

where I had the extraordinary honor and privilege

그 곳에서 탈레반 치하 아프가니스탄 일부 지역에 방문할 수 있는

to go into parts of Afghanistan under the Taliban.

특별한 영광이자 특권을 누렸어요. 저는 부르카를 입고

I was dressed in a burqa and I went in with an extraordinary group,

아프가니스탄 여성 혁명 협회라 불리우는

called the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan.

특별한 그룹에 들어갔어요.

And I saw firsthand how women had been stripped

그리고 여성의 권리가 어떻게

of every single right that was possible to strip women of --

박탈되고 있는지 직접 보았습니다.

from being educated, to being employed,

교육의 권리, 근로의 권리, 심지어

to being actually allowed to eat ice cream.

아이스크림을 먹을 권리도 없었습니다.

For those of you who don't know,

탈레반 치하에서는 아이스크림이 금지되어 있습니다.

it was illegal to eat ice cream under the Taliban.

And I actually saw and met women who had been flogged

실제 바닐라 아이스크림을 먹다 잡혀서

for being caught eating vanilla ice cream.

매 맞는 여자를 본 적 있어요.

I was taken to the secret ice cream-eating place in a little town,

한 작은 마을에서 아이스크림을 몰래 먹는 곳에도 가봤어요.

where we went to a back room, and women were seated

여자들이 뒷방에 앉아서

and a curtain was pulled around us, and they were served vanilla ice cream.

커텐으로 둘러막고 바닐라 아이스크림을 내왔습니다.

And women lifted their burqas and ate this ice cream.

그러면 여자들이 부르카를 들추고 아이스크림을 먹었습니다.

And I don't think I ever understood pleasure until that moment,

그 때까지 저는 기쁨이 뭔지 잘 몰랐던 것 같아요.

and how women have found a way to keep their pleasure alive.

여자들이 어떻게 자신의 기쁨을 쟁취하는 지도 몰랐죠.

It has taken me, this journey, to Islamabad,

이 여정은 이슬라마바드로 이어졌습니다.

where I have witnessed and met women with their faces melted off.

저는 거기서 얼굴이 녹아내린 여자들을 봤어요.

It has taken me to Juarez, Mexico, where I was a week ago,

몇 주 전에는 멕시코 후아레즈에도 갔습니다.

where I have literally been there in parking lots,

죽은 여자들의 뼈를 씻어

where bones of women have washed up

콜라병 옆에 방치해 둔

and been dumped next to Coca-Cola bottles.

말 그대로 묘지 같은 곳이었어요.

It has taken me to universities all over this country,

데이트 상대가 강간하고 마약을 먹이는

where girls are date-raped and drugged.

이 나라의 여러 대학에도 가보았습니다.

I have seen terrible, terrible, terrible violence.

끔찍하기 그지 없는 폭력들을 보았습니다.

But I have also recognized, in the course of seeing that violence,

하지만 그와 동시에

that being in the face of things and seeing actually what's in front of us

내가 처한 상황을 직시하는 것이

우울증이나 자괴감을 극복하게 도와주는 해독제라는 것도

is the antidote to depression,

and to a feeling that one is worthless and has no value.

깨달을 수 있었습니다.

Because before the "Vagina Monologues,"

버자이너 모놀로그를 쓰기 전에는

I will say that 80 percent of my consciousness was closed off

제 의식의 80%나 되는 부분이

to what was really going on in this reality,

현실에 무감각했었습니다.

and that closing-off closed off my vitality and my life energy.

그 무감각이 제 활력과 생의 에너지를 꺼버렸었고요.

What has also happened is in the course of these travels --

그리고, 이 여행을 하면서 얻은

and it's been an extraordinary thing --

또 다른 수확은 방문했던 모든 곳에서

is that every single place that I have gone to in the world,

새로운 인류를 만났다는 거에요.

I have met a new species.

And I really love hearing about all these species at the bottom of the sea.

수면 깊은 곳에 있는 이종(異種)의 인류를 만나는 일은 정말 즐겁습니다.

And I was thinking about how being with these extraordinary people

그러니 오늘 이렇게 특별한 관객들과

함께 하면서 나누기에

on this particular panel,

that it's beneath, beyond and between,

이 주제가 얼마나 딱 맞는지

and the vagina kind of fits into all those categories.

생각하지 않을 수가 없네요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But one of the things I've seen is this species --

제가 본 새로운 종족에 대해 말씀 드릴게요.

and it is a species, and it is a new paradigm,

이건 하나의 종(種)이자, 새로운 패러다임이에요.

and it doesn't get reported in the press or in the media

언론이나 미디어에 보고된 적이 없어요.

because I don't think good news ever is news,

좋은 소식은 뉴스 거리가 못 되잖아요.

and I don't think people who are transforming the planet

세상을 변화시키는 분들은

are what gets the ratings on TV shows.

TV쇼에서 환영 받는 인물도 아니고요.

But every single country I have been to --

하지만 제가 갔던 모든 나라들

and in the last six years, I've been to about 45 countries,

지난 6년 간 방문한 45개국, 작은 마을과 도시들에서

and many tiny little villages and cities and towns --

I have seen something what I've come to call "vagina warriors."

제가 '음부의 용사들'이라 부르게 된 분들을 만났습니다.

A "vagina warrior" is a woman, or a vagina-friendly man,

음부의 용사란 여성이든 남성이든 관계 없이

who has witnessed incredible violence or suffered it,

극심한 폭력을 목격했거나 직접 겪어야했음에도 불구하고

and rather than getting an AK-47 or a weapon of mass destruction

AK-47이나 대량 살상 무기 혹은 칼을 드는 대신

or a machete,

they hold the violence in their bodies;

they grieve it; they experience it; and then they go out

and devote their lives to making sure it doesn't happen to anybody else.

I have met these women everywhere on the planet,

전 세상 모든 곳에서 이런 여성들을 만났습니다.

and I want to tell a few stories,

그 중 몇 가지 이야기를 해드리고 싶네요.

because I believe that stories are the way that we transmit information,

이 이야기들이 우리가 전하려는 정보를

where it goes into our bodies.

가장 절절하게 전달할 수 있으리라 믿으니까요.

And I think one of the things about being at TED that's been very interesting

TED에서 경험한 재미있는 일 중 하나가

is that I live in my body a lot,

저는 원래 머리보다 몸으로 생각하는 사람인데

and I don't live in my head very much anymore.

And this is a very heady place.

여기는 머리를 복잡하게 만드는 곳이잖아요.

And it's been really interesting to be in my head

지난 이틀 간 제 머리 속은 뒤죽박죽이었어요.

for the last two days; I've been very disoriented --

갈피를 잡기가 무척 어려웠죠.

(Laughter)

because I think the world, the V-world, is very much in your body.

저는 V-세상이라는 게 당신의 몸에 존재한다고 믿거든요.

It's a body world, and the species really exists in the body.

이건 몸의 세계고, 말씀 드린 분들도 몸으로 생각하는 분들이에요.

And I think there's a real significance in us attaching our bodies to our heads,

몸과 머리를 이어준다는 것이

정말 중요해요. 이 둘이 나뉘면

that that separation has created a divide

의도하지 않는 결과가 초래되는 일이 생기곤 하니까요.

that is often separating purpose from intent.

And the connection between body and head

하지만 몸과 머리가 이어져 있다면 의도에 맞는 결과를 낼 수 있습니다.

often brings those things into union.

I want to talk about three particular people that I've met,

특별한 세 분에 대해 얘기하고 싶어요.

vagina warriors, who really transformed my understanding

제가 만난 이 음부의 용사 세 분은 제가 가지고 있던

of this whole principle and species,

원칙과 종(種)에 대한 모든 생각을 변화시켰습니다.

and one is a woman named Marsha Lopez.

첫 번째로 마샤 로페즈라는 분입니다.

Marsha Lopez was a woman I met in Guatemala.

과테말라에서 만난 분인데요.

She was 14 years old, and she was in a marriage

이 소녀는 14세로 결혼한 상태였어요.

and her husband was beating her on a regular basis.

남편은 정기적으로 그녀를 폭행했지만

And she couldn't get out,

이 관계에 중독 되다시피 한 그녀는 빠져나올 수 없었어요.

because she was addicted to the relationship,

and she had no money.

돈도 없었고요. 그런데 마침 그녀의 여동생이

Her sister was younger than her, and she applied --

we had a "Stop Rape" contest a few years ago in New York --

몇 년 전 저희가 뉴욕에서 연 "강간 중지" 콘테스트에 지원했어요.

and she applied, hoping that she would become a finalist

결선에 올라 마샤를 뉴욕에 데리고 올 수 있기를

and she could bring her sister.

기대하면서요.

She did become a finalist; she brought Marsha to New York.

그녀는 결선에 올라 마샤를 뉴욕에 데리고 왔습니다.

And at that time,

매디슨스퀘어 가든에서 특별한 V-데이가 열렸어요.

we did this extraordinary V-Day at Madison Square Garden,

평소 테스토스테론으로 가득차던 경기장 전석이 매진됐고

where we sold out the entire testosterone-filled dome --

18,000 people standing up to say "Yes" to vaginas,

18,000명의 사람이 함께

음부를 향해 "예스"를 외쳤습니다. 정말 믿기 어려운 변화였어요.

which was really a pretty incredible transformation.

And she came, and she witnessed this,

현장에서 이 장면을 목격한 마샤는

and she decided that she would go back and leave her husband,

and that she would bring V-Day to Guatemala.

그리고 그녀는 V-데이를 과테말라로 전파시켰죠.

She was 21 years old.

I went to Guatemala and she had sold out the National Theater of Guatemala.

And I watched her walk up on stage in her red short dress and high heels,

and she stood there and said, "My name is Marsha.

I was beaten by my husband for five years. He almost murdered me.

I left and you can, too."

And the entire 2,000 people went absolutely crazy.

There's a woman named Esther Chávez who I met in Juarez, Mexico.

또 에스더 샤베즈라는 여자가 있어요.

멕시코 후아레즈에서 만난 여자죠.

And Esther Chávez was a brilliant accountant in Mexico City.

멕시코 시티의 똑똑한 회계사였고, 72세였어요.

She was 72 years old and she was planning to retire.

그녀는 은퇴를 계획하고 있었죠.

She went to Juarez to take care of an ailing aunt,

하지만 병든 고모를 돌보기 위해 후아레즈로 갔던 차에

and in the course of it, she began to discover what was happening

그 곳에서 살인 당하고, 행방불명된 여성들의

to the murdered and disappeared women of Juarez.

사연을 접하게 됩니다.

She gave up her life; she moved to Juarez.

그녀는 모든 걸 정리하고 후아레즈로 옮겨 와서

She started to write the stories which documented the disappeared women.

사라진 여성에 관한 다큐멘터리 글을 쓰기 시작했어요.

300 women have disappeared in a border town because they're brown and poor.

가난한 유색 인종이라는 이유만으로

한 국경 도시의 여성 300명이 행방불명 되었는데,

There has been no response to the disappearance,

이에 대한 어떤 조치도 취해지지 않았고,

and not one person has been held accountable.

책임을 지는 사람도 없었습니다.

She began to document it.

그녀는 이것에 대한 문서 기록을 남기고, '여성의 집'이라는 센터를 열었어요.

She opened a center called Casa Amiga, and in six years,

she has literally brought this to the consciousness of the world.

We were there a week ago,

when there were 7,000 people in the street, and it was truly a miracle.

And as we walked through the streets,

the people of Juarez, who normally don't even come into the streets,

because the streets are so dangerous,

literally stood there and wept,

to see that other people from the world had showed up

for that particular community.

There's another woman, named Agnes.

그리고 아그네스라는 이름의 소녀도 있습니다. 이 아이는 제게

And Agnes, for me, epitomizes what a vagina warrior is.

음부 용사의 완벽한 예를 보여줬어요.

I met her three years ago in Kenya.

3년 전 케냐에서 만난 이 작은 소녀는 신체가 훼손된 상태였어요.

And Agnes was mutilated as a little girl;

she was circumcised against her will when she was 10 years old,

자기 의사와 관계 없이 할례를 당한 거에요.

그리고 열 살이 되던 해, 그녀는 이런 관습을

and she really made a decision

that she didn't want this practice to continue anymore in her community.

자기 마을에서 없애겠다는 결심을 했습니다.

So when she got older, she created this incredible thing:

그녀는 나이가 든 후 깜짝 놀랄만한 것을 만들었어요.

it's an anatomical sculpture of a woman's body, half a woman's body.

여성 해부 반신상이었죠.

And she walked through the Rift Valley,

and she had vagina and vagina replacement parts,

음부와 음부 대체물을 가지고

where she would teach girls and parents and boys and girls

소년, 소녀, 부모들에게 건강한 음부와

what a healthy vagina looks like, and what a mutilated vagina looks like.

And in the course of her travel --

she walked literally for eight years through the Rift Valley,

through dust, through sleeping on the ground,

because the Maasai are nomads,

and she would have to find them, and they would move,

먼지 구덩이를 헤치고 맨땅에서 자면서 찾아내서

and she would find them again --

결국 1,500명의 소녀를 할례로부터 구했습니다.

she saved 1,500 girls from being cut.

And in that time, she created an alternative ritual,

그 즈음 그녀는 소녀들의 성인식에서

which involved girls coming of age without the cut.

할례 대신 행할 의식을 만들어 냈습니다.

When we met her three years ago,

3년 전 그녀를 만났을 때, V-데이에서

we said, "What could V-Day do for you?"

도와줄 것이 없느냐고 했더니

And she said, "Well, if you got me a jeep, I could get around a lot faster."

"지프차가 있으면 빨리 다닐 수 있을 거에요." 라더군요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So we bought her a jeep.

그래서 그 해에 그녀에게 지프차를 주었어요.

And in the year that she had the jeep, she saved 4,500 girls from being cut.

그녀는 4,500명의 소녀가 할례를 피할 수 있도록 도왔습니다.

So we said to her, "What else could we do for you?"

그래서 다른 도와줄 것이 없느냐고 했더니

She said, "Well, Eve, if you gave me some money,

"음, 돈을 좀 주신다면

I could open a house and girls could run away,

탈출한 소녀들이 머물 집을 짓고 싶어요." 라고 했어요.

and they could be saved."

And I want to tell this little story about my own beginnings,

이제 제가 이 일을 시작한 때의 한 일화를 얘기해야 되겠군요.

because it's very interrelated to happiness and Agnes.

행복과 아그네스, 이 둘과 밀접한 연관이 있는 얘기거든요.

When I was a little girl -- I grew up in a wealthy community;

어릴 적 저는

부유한 동네, 중산층 백인 동네에서 자랐어요.

it was an upper-middle class white community,

and it had all the trappings and the looks

과시하기 좋고

완벽하게 훌륭하고 대단한 그런 동네요.

of a perfectly nice, wonderful, great life.

And everyone was supposed to be happy in that community,

그 동네 사람들은 전부 행복해야 마땅하건만

and, in fact, my life was hell.

제 인생은 지옥 같았어요. 아버지가 알코올 중독이었거든요.

I lived with an alcoholic father

who beat me and molested me, and it was all inside that.

저를 때리고 성폭행했는데, 늘 은밀하게 이루어졌죠.

And always as a child I had this fantasy that somebody would come and rescue me.

어린 시절 저는 언젠가는 누군가 날 구해줄 거라는 환상이 있었어요.

And I actually made up a little character whose name was Mr. Alligator.

그래서 미스터 앨리게이터라는 캐릭터를 만들었습니다.

I would call him up when things got really bad,

나쁜 일이 생길 때면 그에게 전화해서

and say it was time to come and pick me up.

이제 나타나 나를 구해줄 때라고 했죠.

And I would pack a little bag and wait for Mr. Alligator to come.

전 짐을 싸고 그가 오기를 기다렸지만

Now, Mr. Alligator never did come,

그는 결코 나타나지 않았어요.

but the idea of Mr. Alligator coming actually saved my sanity

하지만 그가 와서 구해준다는 생각이 제가 미치지 않도록 지켜주었고

and made it OK for me to keep going,

언젠가 누가 나타나 구해줄 거라는 믿음이

because I believed, in the distance,

제가 계속 버틸 수 있는 힘이 되었습니다.

there would be someone coming to rescue me.

Cut to 40-some odd years later,

그렇게 40여 년이 지난 후 케냐로 갔습니다.

we go to Kenya, and we're walking,

걸어서 어떤 집 앞에 도착했는데

we arrive at the opening of this house.

And Agnes hadn't let me come to the house for days,

아그네스는 그 집에 며칠 머무르게 해주지 못했어요.

because they were preparing this whole ritual.

의식을 준비하느라고요.

한 가지 놀라운 이야기는 아그네스가

I want to tell you a great story.

When Agnes first started fighting

동네에서 여성 할례 반대를 시작했을 때

to stop female genital mutilation in her community,

she had become an outcast, and she was exiled and slandered,

따돌림 받고, 추방 당하고, 욕을 먹었습니다.

and the whole community turned against her.

모든 이들이 등을 돌렸음에도

But being a vagina warrior, she kept going,

그녀는 음부의 용사로서 임무를 계속했어요.

and she kept committing herself to transforming consciousness.

사람들의 의식을 변화시키기 위해 노력했습니다.

And in the Maasai community,

마사이 족 사회에서 염소와 소는 가장 귀한 재산입니다.

goats and cows are the most valued possession.

They're like the Mercedes-Benz of the Rift Valley.

우리로 치면 벤츠나 다름 없어요.

And she said two days before the house opened,

소녀들을 위한 집을 열기 이틀 전에 두 명의 마시이 족이

two different people arrived to give her a goat each,

각자 염소 한 마리식 데리고 와 그녀에게 주었어요.

and she said to me,

"I knew then that female genital mutilation would end one day in Africa."

"언젠가는 아프라카에서 여성 할례가 사라질 거에요." 라고 하면서요.

Anyway, we arrived, and when we arrived,

아무튼 우리가 도착했을 때

there were hundreds of girls dressed in red homemade dresses --

손수 만든 붉은 옷을 입은 수백 명의 소녀들이 있었습니다.

which is the color of the Maasai and the color of V-Day --

빨간 색은 마사이 족의 색이자, V-데이의 색깔이에요.

and they greeted us.

그들은 우리를 맞이했고 이 고통의 끝을,

They had made up these songs that they were singing,

할례의 종식을 기리는 노래를 만들었습니다.

about the end of suffering and the end of mutilation,

우리는 그들을 뒤따라 아프리카 태양 아래 펼쳐진

and they walked us down the path.

It was a gorgeous day in the African sun,

근사한 장면을 볼 수 있었습니다.

and the dust was flying and the girls were dancing,

자욱한 먼지 속에서 소녀들은 춤을 추고

and there was this house, and it said, "V-Day Safe House for the Girls."

그 뒤로 "소녀들을 위한 V-데이 구호의 집"이란 현판을 단 집이 있었습니다.

And it hit me in that moment that it had taken 47 years,

저는 바로 그 순간, 47년의 세월을 넘어 미스터 엘리게이터가

but that Mr. Alligator had finally shown up.

나타났다는 걸 알 수 있었습니다.

And he had shown up, obviously,

그는 제가 오랜 시간을 들여야만 이해할 수 있었던 모습으로 나타난 겁니다.

in a form that it took me a long time to understand,

which is that when we give in the world what we want the most,

우리가 가장 원하는 것을 줄 때

우리 내면의 아픈 곳을 고칠 수 있다는 것 말이에요.

we heal the broken part inside each of us.

And I feel, in the last eight years,

저는 지난 8년에 걸친

that this journey -- this miraculous vagina journey --

이 기적 같은 여행을 통해서

has taught me this really simple thing,

지극히 단순한 사실을 배웠어요. 행복은 행동하는 데 있다는 것.

which is that happiness exists in action;

it exists in telling the truth and saying what your truth is;

행복은 당신의 진실을 말하는 순간에 존재하고

and it exists in giving away what you want the most.

내가 가장 원하는 것을 남에게 배풀 때 존재한다는 것을요.

And I feel that knowledge and that journey

전 이 여정을 통해서 이런 것들을 배울 수 있었던 것이

has been an extraordinary privilege,

매우 특별한 특권이었다고 생각합니다.

and I feel really blessed

여러분과 오늘 이 얘기를 나눌 수 있어 무척 기뻤습니다.
