Everyone has a story,

우리 모두에게는 이야기가 있습니다.

and that story is filled with chapters

that have made us who we are today.

Those early chapters of that story

sometimes are the ones that define us the most.

The Center for Disease Control

has estimated that over half of our nation's children

have experienced at least one or two types of childhood trauma.

어린 시절 하나 혹은 둘 이상의 외상을 경험했다고 합니다.

That adversity can have lasting effects.

그런 역경의 영향은 지속될 수 있습니다.

When I began to have opportunities to speak

제가 학생들과 교사들을 대변해

and advocate for students and for teachers,

얘기할 기회가 생기기 시작했을 때

I found myself uniquely positioned

저는 어린 시절 외상에 대해 이야기할 수 있는

to be able to speak about childhood trauma.

특별한 위치에 서게 됐습니다.

But I had to make a decision first.

하지만 전 먼저 결정해야 했죠.

I had to decide,

이런 결정을 내려야 했어요.

did I want to just share the bright and shiny parts of my life,

내 인생의 찬란하고 눈부신 부분만 얘기할 것인가?

you know, those ones that we put out on social media

즉, SNS에 올리는

that make us all look perfect,

완벽해 보이는 이야기 말이죠.

or did I want to make myself vulnerable

아니면 내 상처를 드러내고

and become an open book?

모든 것을 솔직하게 말할 것인가?

The choice became very clear.

제 선택은 분명해졌습니다.

In order to make a difference in the life of a child,

한 아이의 인생에 영향을 주기 위해서는

I had to become transparent.

제가 투명해져야 했죠.

So I made the commitment to tell my personal story.

그래서 저는 제 개인적인 이야기를 하기로 결심했습니다.

And this story is filled with people that have loved me

이 이야기는 저를 사랑해주고

보살펴줬으며 성장하게 해준 사람들로 가득합니다.

and taken care of me and grown me.

And have helped me overcome and heal.

제가 극복하고 치유되도록 도와주신 분들이죠.

And now it's time for me to help others do the same.

이제 다른 사람들도 똑같이 하도록 제가 도와줄 차례입니다.

When I first started school, I was the picture of normalcy.

학교를 처음 다니기 시작했을 때 저는 전형적인 평범한 아이였습니다.

I was from a good family,

좋은 가정에서 자랐고

I was always dressed nicely,

항상 옷을 단정하게 입었으며

had a smile on my face,

얼굴은 미소를 띠고 있었죠.

I was prepared for school.

저는 학교에 갈 준비가 됐어요.

But my life was anything but normal.

하지만 제 삶은 전혀 평범하지 않았습니다.

By this time, I had already become a victim of sexual abuse.

이때 저는 이미 성 학대 피해자였죠.

And it was still happening.

그 당시 여전히 계속되고 있었고요.

My parents didn't know,

부모님은 모르셨고

and I had not told anyone else.

저도 아무에게도 말하지 않았습니다.

When I started school, I felt like this was going to be my safe place.

학교에 다니기 시작하자 이곳이 제 안전지대가 될 것 같았죠.

So I was excited.

정말 신났었어요.

Imagine my dismay when I met my teacher,

제가 랜돌프 선생님을 만났을 때

Mr. Randolph.

얼마나 실망했을지 상상해보세요.

Now Mr. Randolph was not my abuser.

랜돌프 선생님에게 학대를 당한 건 아니었습니다.

But Mr. Randolph was the epitome

하지만 랜돌프 선생님은

제가 평생 두려워했던 모든 것의 전형이었죠.

of everything that scared me the most in my life.

I had already started these self-preservation techniques

전 이미 자기 보호 기술을 쓰기 시작했습니다.

to where I took myself out of positions where I was going to be alone with a man.

남자와 단둘이 있을 상황을 빠져나가기 위한 기술이었죠.

And here I was, as a student,

학생인 제가

I was going to be in a classroom with a man every day,

1년 동안 매일 남자와

for a year of school.

교실에 있어야 하는 것입니다.

I was scared; I didn't trust him.

전 겁이 났고 선생님을 믿지 않았죠.

But you know what,

하지만 말입니다.

Mr. Randolph would turn out to be my greatest advocate.

랜돌프 선생님은 결국 저의 가장 큰 지지자가 되어주셨습니다.

But in the beginning,

하지만 처음에는

oh, I made sure he knew I did not like him.

제가 선생님을 싫어하는 걸 확실히 보여드렸죠.

I was noncompliant;

전 대답도 잘 안하고

I was that kid that was disengaged.

비협조적인 그런 아이였습니다.

And I also made it really hard on my parents, too.

부모님도 정말 힘들게 괴롭혔죠.

I didn't want to go to school,

학교에 가기 싫었기에

so I fought them every morning, getting on the bus.

버스에 타기 싫다고 부모님과 매일 아침 싸웠습니다.

At night, I couldn't sleep,

밤에는 잠도 못 잤어요.

because my anxiety was so high.

불안감이 너무 컸거든요.

So I was going into class exhausted.

그렇게 지친 상태로 수업에 들어갔습니다.

Which, exhausted children are cranky children,

지친 아이는 짜증이 많기 마련이죠.

and they're not easy to teach,

가르치기 쉽지 않습니다.

you know that.

다들 아시겠죠.

Mr. Randolph could have approached me with frustration,

랜돌프 선생님은 저에게 짜증을 내실 수도 있었습니다.

like so many teachers do with students like me.

저 같은 학생에게 많은 선생님들이 그러하시듯 말이죠.

But not him.

하지만 그분은 아니었어요.

He approached me with empathy

공감과 융통성을 가지고

and with flexibility.

저에게 다가오셨습니다.

I was so grateful for that.

그게 정말 감사했죠.

He saw this six-year-old was tired and weary.

피곤해하고 지친 6살짜리 아이를 보신 겁니다.

And so instead of making me go outside for recess,

쉬는 시간에 밖에 나가게 하는 대신

he would let me stay in and take naps,

제가 안에서 낮잠을 자게 해주셨습니다.

because he knew I needed rest.

저에게 휴식이 필요한 걸 아셨거든요.

Instead of sitting at the teacher table at lunch,

선생님은 점심시간에 교무실에 가시는 게 아니라

he would come and sit with the students at the student table.

학생들과 함께 식사를 하시곤 하셨습니다.

He would engage me and all my classmates in conversation.

저와 같은 반 친구들 모두와 대화를 이어나가셨죠.

And I now look back and I know

이제 와서 돌이켜 생각해보니

he had a purpose for that,

그분이 듣고 질문하는 데는

he was listening, he was asking questions.

이유가 있었습니다.

He needed to find out what was going on.

바로 무슨 일인지 알아내야 했던 거죠.

He built a relationship with me.

저와 친밀한 관계를 만드셨고

He earned my trust.

제가 그분을 믿게 했습니다.

And slowly but surely,

천천히, 하지만 분명하게

those walls that I had built around myself

제 주변에 쌓아 올린 벽을

he started chipping away at,

그분이 조금씩 깨기 시작하셨고

and I eventually realized he was one of the good guys.

전 마침내 선생님이 좋은 사람인 걸 알았습니다.

I know that he felt like he wasn't enough.

선생님은 본인으로는 부족하다는 걸 아셨어요.

Because he made the move to talk to my mom.

제 엄마와 얘기하려고 하셨거든요.

And got my mom's permission

엄마의 허락을 받아

to let me start seeing a school guidance counselor,

제가 학교 상담 선생님을 만나도록 했습니다.

Ms. McFadyen.

바로 맥퍼딘 선생님이셨죠.

I started seeing Ms. McFadyen once or twice a week

저는 그 후 2년 동안 일주일에 한 번, 혹은 두 번

for the next two years.

맥퍼딘 선생님과 만났습니다.

It was a process.

긴 과정이었죠.

During that time period,

그 시간 동안

I never disclosed to her the abuse,

저는 학대당한 이야기는 하지 않았습니다.

because it was a secret;

비밀이었거든요.

I wasn't supposed to tell.

발설하면 안 되는 얘기였어요.

But she connected the dots, I know she did,

하지만 선생님은 단서를 끼워 맞추셨다는 걸 저는 알아요.

because everything that she did with me

선생님이 하신 모든 일은

was to empower me and help me find my voice.

저에게 힘을 주는 것이었고 제 목소리를 찾도록 해주는 거였으니까요.

She taught me how to use mental images

제 두려움을 이겨내기 위해

to push through my fears.

마음속 이미지를 쓰는 법을 가르쳐주셨죠.

She taught me breathing techniques

제가 자주 겪었던

to help me get through those anxiety attacks

불안 발작을 이기는 데 도움이 될 만한

that I would have so often.

호흡 기술도 가르쳐주셨죠.

And she role-played with me.

저와 역할 놀이도 했어요.

And she made sure

어떤 상황이든

that I could stand up for myself in situations.

제가 당당히 나설 수 있도록 가르쳐주셨어요.

And the day came

그리고 그날이 왔습니다.

where I was in the room with my abuser

저를 학대한 사람과 다른 어른 한 명이

and one other adult.

저와 한 방에 있었죠.

And I told my truth.

그리고 전 진실을 말했습니다.

I told about the abuse.

학대 얘기를 했죠.

Immediately, my abuser began to deny,

학대 가해자는 곧바로 부인하기 시작했고,

and the person I disclosed to,

제가 이 사실을 말한 그 사람도 역시

they just weren't equipped to handle the bombshell

제가 방금 말한 이런 폭탄 발언을 감당할 만큼

that I had just dropped on them.

준비되어 있지 않았어요.

It was easier to believe the abuser

그러니 어린아이보다는

가해자를 믿는 편이 더 쉬웠죠.

rather than a child.

So I was told never to speak of it again.

그래서 저에게 다시는 그 얘기를 꺼내지 말라고 했습니다.

I was made to feel like I had done something wrong, again.

다시 한번, 제가 뭔가를 잘못했다는 생각이 들게 됐죠.

It was devastating.

정말 힘들었습니다.

But you know what,

하지만 말이죠.

something good came out of that day.

그날 좋은 일도 생겼습니다.

My abuser knew that I was no longer going to be silent.

제가 이젠 입다물고 있지 않을 것임을 가해자가 알게 된 거죠.

The power shifted.

상황은 역전되었습니다.

And the abuse stopped.

학대도 멈추었고요.

(Applause)

But the shame

하지만 수치심과

and fear of it happening again

다시 일어날지도 모른다는 공포감은

remained.

계속 남았습니다.

And it would remain with me

이러한 감정은 그 후 아주 오랫동안

for many, many years to come.

제 안에 남아있었습니다.

Mr. Randolph and Ms. McFadyen,

랜돌프 선생님과 맥퍼딘 선생님은

they helped me find my voice.

제가 목소리를 찾도록 도와주셨습니다.

They helped me find the light out.

제가 빛을 찾도록 도와주셨어요.

But you know what,

하지만 말이죠.

there are so many kids that aren't as fortunate as me.

저는 운이 좋았지만 그렇지 않은 아이들이 정말 많습니다.

And you have them in your classrooms.

여러분의 교실에도 있어요.

That is why it's so important for me to talk to you today,

그래서 오늘 제가 여러분께 말씀드리는 게 정말 중요한 겁니다.

so you can be aware

이를 통해 여러분이 알게 되고

and you can start asking the questions that need to be asked

꼭 물어봐야 하는 질문을 하기 시작하며

and paying attention to these students,

이런 학생들에게 관심을 기울일 수 있도록 말이죠.

so you too can help them find their way.

그렇게 여러분도 아이들이 자기 길을 찾도록 도울 수 있게요.

As a kindergarten teacher,

유치원 교사로서

I start my year off

저는 아이들에게

with my kids making box biographies.

상자 안에 입체 자서전을 만들라고 하면서 한 해를 시작합니다.

These are two of my students.

우리 학생 중 두 명입니다.

And I encourage them

저는 아이들에게

to fill those boxes with things that tell me about them

자신과 자기 인생에 대해 얘기하고 싶은 것들로

and about their life,

상자를 채우라고 권해요.

what's important to you, you know?

자신에게 중요한 것들로 말이죠.

They decorate them,

아이들은 상자를 꾸밉니다.

I mean, they really take time,

시간을 많이 들여서

they fill them with pictures of their families and of their pets,

가족과 반려동물의 사진을 붙이죠.

and then I let them present them to me and to the class.

그런 다음 저는 아이들에게 저와 반 친구들에게 발표하라고 합니다.

And during that time, I am an active listener.

발표를 하는 동안 저는 적극적으로 경청하죠.

Because the things they say,

아이들이 하는 말과

the facial expressions that they give me,

아이들이 저에게 보이는 표정,

the things they don't say

아이들이 말하지 않는 것들이

can become red flags for me

경고가 될 수 있거든요.

and can help me figure out what their needs are.

아이들에게 필요한 것을 알아내는 데 도움이 되기도 하고요.

What is driving them

아이들이 수업 시간에

to maybe have the behaviors that they're showing me in class.

저에게 보이는 행동을 하게 되는 원동력도 알 수 있고요.

How can I be a better teacher

아이들의 목소리를 들어서

by listening to their voices?

더 나은 선생님이 되려는 거죠.

I also make times to develop relationships with them,

전 아이들과의 관계를 발전시키는 시간도 만듭니다.

much like Mr. Randolph did with me.

랜돌프 선생님이 저에게 해주셨던 것처럼 말이죠.

I sit with them at lunch,

점심시간 때 아이들과 함께 앉고,

I have conversations with them at recess,

쉬는 시간에 아이들과 대화를 하며,

I go to their games on the weekends,

주말에 아이들의 운동 경기를 보러 가고,

I go to their dance recitals.

아이들의 춤 발표회에 갑니다.

I become a part of their life.

전 아이들 삶의 일부가 돼요.

Because in order to really know a student,

학생을 정말 잘 알기 위해서는

you've got to infuse yourself into their lives.

아이들의 삶에 자신을 스며들게 해야 하니까요.

Now I know some of you are middle school teachers

여러분 중에는 중학교 선생님과

and high school teachers,

고등학교 선생님도 계시겠죠.

and you might think that those kids

이런 아이들은 이미 다 자랐다고

have already kind of developed, and you know,

생각하실지도 모르겠습니다.

they're on autopilot at that point.

이미 혼자서 알아서 한다고 말이죠.

But don't be deceived.

하지만 속지 마세요.

Especially the kids that you think have it all together,

특히 알아서 잘한다고 생각되는 아이일수록

because those are the ones that might need you the most.

여러분이 가장 필요할 수도 있거든요.

If you were to look at my yearbook,

제 졸업 앨범을 보시면

you would see me on about every page,

모든 페이지에 제 사진이 있어요.

because I was involved in everything.

정말 많은 일에 참여했거든요.

I even drove a school bus.

심지어 스쿨버스도 몰았어요.

(Laughs)

So I was that kid

그러니 저는 선생님들이 볼 때

that teachers thought was the overachiever,

뭐든 지나치게 열심히 하고

the popular person,

인기 많고

the one that had it together.

알아서 잘하는 아이로 보였을 거예요.

But guys, I was lost.

하지만 전 막막했어요.

I was lost,

너무 막막했고

and I wanted someone to ask me,

누군가 저에게 물어주길 바랐어요.

"Lisa, why are you here all the time,

"리사, 왜 맨날 여기 있어?"

why are you throwing yourself into all these things?"

"왜 이렇게 열심히 하는 거야?"

Did they ever wonder,

사람들이 궁금했을까요?

was I running away from someone,

제가 누군가에게서 도망치는 건지,

was I running away from something?

제가 뭔가에서 도망치는 건지,

Why did I not want to be in my community

제가 왜 동네나 집에 가는 걸

or in my home?

싫어했는지,

Why did I want to be at school all the time?

왜 맨날 학교에만 있고 싶어 했는지,

No one ever asked.

아무도 물어본 적 없어요.

Now don't get me wrong,

오해는 하지 마세요.

all overachievers in your schools

성취욕이 크다고 해서

are not victims of abuse or trauma.

전부 학대나 외상을 겪은 피해자라는 말은 아닙니다.

But I just want you to take the time to be curious.

그냥 시간을 내서 관심을 좀 가져주셨으면 좋겠어요.

Ask them why.

왜 그러는지 물어보세요.

You may find out that there is a reason behind it.

그 뒤에 숨은 이유를 발견할지도 몰라요.

You could be the reason that they move forward

아이들이 자기 이야기를 가지고 앞으로 나아가는 이유가

with their story.

바로 여러분이 될 수도 있어요.

Be careful not to assume

아이들 이야기의 결말을

that you already know the ending to their story.

이미 다 안다고 속단하지 않도록 조심하세요.

Don't put a period where a semicolon should be.

이어지는 이야기에 마침표를 찍지 말아 주세요.

Keep that story going

이야기가 계속 이어지게 해주시고

and help them know that even if something has happened traumatic to them,

고통스러운 일이 생기더라도 자기 삶을 이야기할 가치가 있다는 사실을

that their life is still worth telling.

아이들이 알 수 있도록 도와주세요.

Their story is worth telling.

아이들의 이야기는 얘기할 가치가 있어요.

Now in order to do that,

그러기 위해서는

I really feel like we have to embrace our own personal stories as educators.

교육자로서 우리 자신의 이야기를 받아들여야 한다고 생각해요.

Many of you might be sitting there

지금 앉아서

and thinking, "Yeah.

이렇게 생각하시는 분들도 많겠죠.

That happened to me.

"그래, 나한테도 있었던 일이야.

But I'm not ready to share."

근데 아직 얘기할 마음의 준비가 안 됐어."

And that's OK.

그래도 괜찮아요.

The time will come

이제 과거의 고통을

when you will feel it inside your soul

미래를 위한 목적으로

that it's time to turn your past pain

바꿀 때가 왔다고

into purpose for the future.

마음속 깊이 느껴질 때가 올 테니까요.

These children are our future.

이 아이들이 바로 우리의 미래죠.

I just encourage you to take it day by day.

매일매일 조금씩 하시라고 권하고 싶어요.

Talk to someone.

누군가와 얘기하세요.

Be willing and just open.

기꺼이 받아주고 마음을 여세요.

My life story came full circle

제 인생 이야기는 한 바퀴 돌아서

in the spring of 2018,

2018년 봄, 원점으로 돌아갔어요.

where I was invited to speak

이제 시작하는 선생님과 멘토들을 대상으로

to a group of beginning teachers and mentors.

강연을 하는 데 초청을 받았을 때였죠.

I shared my story, much like today with you,

오늘 여러분과 나눈 비슷한 이야기를 나눴고

and afterwards I had a lady approach me.

강연이 끝난 후, 어떤 여자분이 저에게 다가오셨어요.

She had tears in her eyes and she quietly said, "Thank you.

눈물을 글썽이며 조용히 이렇게 말하더군요.

Thank you for sharing.

"얘기 나눠주셔서 감사해요.

I cannot wait to tell my dad

오늘 들은 모든 이야기를

everything that I heard today."

아빠한테 꼭 말씀드리고 싶어요."

She must have seen the perplexed look on my face,

제 당황한 표정을 보고는

because she followed up by saying,

바로 이렇게 말하더군요.

"Mr. Randolph is my dad."

"랜돌프 선생님이 바로 우리 아빠예요.

Audience: Aww.

Lisa Godwin: "And he often wonders:

아빠는 종종 본인이

Did he make a difference?

영향을 줬을지 궁금해하셨거든요.

Today, I get to go home and tell him,

오늘 집에 가서 아빠가 영향을 준 게

'You definitely made a difference.'"

분명하다고 말씀드릴 거예요."

What a gift.

정말 축복받았죠.

What a gift.

축복받았어요.

And that prompted me

그 일 덕분에

to reach out to Ms. McFadyen's daughter as well,

저는 맥퍼딘 선생님의 따님한테도 연락해서

and to share with her

맥퍼딘 선생님이 어떤 영향을 주셨는지 얘기했어요.

what an impact Ms. McFadyen had made.

And I wanted her to know

따님한테도 제가

I have advocated for more funding

상담 교사와 학교 사회복지사,

for guidance counselors, for school social workers,

심리학자와 간호사들을 위해

for psychologists, for nurses,

자금을 모으고 있다는 사실을 알려드리고 싶었죠.

because they are so vital to the mental and physical health

우리 아이들의 정신 및 신체 건강에

of our children.

정말 중요한 분들이니까요.

I'm thankful for Ms. McFadyen.

맥퍼딘 선생님께 감사드립니다.

I once heard someone say,

언젠가 이런 얘기를 들었어요.

in order to find your way out of the darkness,

어둠 속에서 길을 찾기 위해서는

you have to find the light.

빛을 먼저 찾아야 한대요.

Today, I hope that you leave this place

오늘 여러분이 이곳을 나가

and you seek opportunities to be the light.

빛이 될 기회를 찾으시길 바랍니다.

For not only students

학생들뿐만 아니라

but for adults in your classrooms,

여러분 교실, 학교, 지역 사회에 있는

in your schools, in your communities.

어른들을 위해서 말이죠.

You have the gift

다른 사람들이 역경을 이겨나가도록 돕고

to help someone navigate

그분들의 이야기를

through their trauma

얘기할 가치가 있도록 해줄 재능이

and make their story worth telling.
