I was walking in the market one day with my wife,

and somebody stuck a cage in my face.

And in between those slits

were the saddest eyes I've ever seen.

There was a very sick orangutan baby, my first encounter.

우리 안에는 아픈 오랑우탄 새끼 한 마리가 있었습니다

That evening I came back to the market in the dark

처음 보는 모습이었죠 그 날 저녁

and I heard "uhh, uhh,"

저는 어둠에 잠긴 시장을 다시 찾았습니다

and sure enough I found a dying orangutan baby on a garbage heap.

신음 소리가 들렸습니다 쓰레기 더미 위에서 오랑우탄 새끼가 죽어가고 있었고

Of course, the cage was salvaged.

우리는 이미 다 부서져 있었습니다

I took up the little baby,

그 작은 새끼를 안아 올려

massaged her, forced her to drink

마사지 해주고 물을 먹였습니다

until she finally started breathing normally.

그렇게 호흡을 가라앉혔죠

This is Uce.

'우체'입니다 암놈이죠

She's now living in the jungle of Sungai Wain,

지금 선자와 와인 정글에서 살고 있습니다

and this is Matahari, her second son,

이 아기는 마타하리로 우체의 둘째 아들입니다

which, by the way, is also the son of the second orangutan I rescued, Dodoy.

우체 다음에 구한 도도이가 아빠입니다

That changed my life quite dramatically,

and as of today, I have almost 1,000 babies in my two centers.

It's horrible. It's a proof of our failing to save them in the wild.

It's not good.

This is merely proof of everyone failing to do the right thing.

아무도 일을 바로 잡지 못하고 있다는 명백한 증거란 말입니다

Having more than all the orangutans in all the zoos in the world together,

전 세계 동물원에 있는 오랑우탄 전체 수보다

just now like victims for every baby,

더 많은 새끼 오랑우탄들이 이런 피해를 보고있습니다

six have disappeared from the forest.

지금 이 순간에도 6마리의 새끼가 숲에서 사라지고 있습니다

The deforestation, especially for oil palm,

산림 파괴, 특별히 서방국 바이오 연료 공급원인

to provide biofuel for Western countries

야자유 생산을 위한 산림 파괴가

is what's causing these problems.

이 모든 문제를 만들고 있습니다

And those are the peat swamp forests on 20 meters of peat,

이 곳은 깊이 20미터 이탄층 위에 자리한 늪입니다

the largest accumulation of organic material in the world.

세계 최대 유기물 적재량을 기록하고 있는 곳이기도 하죠

When you open this for growing oil palms

야자수 재배를 위해 이 곳을 개발한다는 건

you're creating CO2 volcanoes

이산화탄소 화산을 하나 만드는 일입니다

that are emitting so much CO2

여기서 발생되는 어마어마한 이산화탄소로

that my country is now the third largest emitter of greenhouse gasses in the world,

인도네시아는 중국 미국에 이어 제3위

after China and the United States.

이산화탄소 최대 배출국이 되었습니다

And we don't have any industry at all --

산업시설은 일체 없지만

it's only because of this deforestation.

파괴된 산림이 있기 때문이죠

And these are horrible images.

여기 끔찍한 모습들을 보십시요

I'm not going to talk too long about it,

긴 설명을 덧붙이진 않겠습니다

but there are so many of the family of Uce,

하지만 우체와 그 새끼처럼

which are not so fortunate to live out there in the forest,

숲에서 살 수 없는 불행한 상황을 계속 겪어야 하는

that still have to go through that process.

오랑우탄 가족들은 너무나 많습니다

And I don't know anymore where to put them.

이들을 어디에 둬야할 지 저도 더는 모르겠습니다

So I decided that I had to come up with a solution for her

그래서 저는 일찍이 결심을 했습니다

but also a solution

우체를 위해 그리고

that will benefit the people that are trying to exploit those forests,

자신의 이익을 위해선 마지막 한 그루 나무까지

to get their hands on the last timber

손을 데고 그렇게 서식지를

and that are causing, in that way,

파괴하고 동물에게 해를 가하는

the loss of habitat and all those victims.

사람들을 위한 해결책을 찾아내자라고요

So I created the place Samboja Lestari,

그렇게 삼보자 레스타리를 만들었습니다

and the idea was,

처음에 이렇게 생각했습니다

if I can do this on the worst possible place that I can think of

만일 가능성이라곤 조금도 보이지 않는

where there is really nothing left,

황폐하고 척박한 땅을 바꾸어 놓으면

no one will have an excuse to say, "Yeah, but ..."

사람들이 변명은 못하겠다 "좋긴 한데"란 말은 못하겠지

No. Everyone should be able to follow this.

누구나 따라할 수 밖에 없겠다 라고 말이죠

So we're in East Borneo. This is the place where I started.

그래서 보르네오 동쪽으로 갔습니다 여기서 일을 시작했죠

As you can see there's only yellow terrain.

누런 땅밖에 남지 않은게 보이시죠

There's nothing left -- just a bit of grass there.

잡초 몇 포기빼고는 아무 것도 남아있지 않았습니다

In 2002 we had about 50 percent of the people jobless there.

2002년 당시 지역 주민의 약 50%가 실직자였습니다

There was a huge amount of crime.

범죄가 산을 이루었고

People spent so much of their money on health issues and drinking water.

소득의 대부분이 식수와 치료비로 들어갔습니다

There was no agricultural productivity left.

농업 생산력은 바닥을 보였습니다

This was the poorest district in the whole province

지역 최대 빈곤 구역이었습니다

and it was a total extinction of wildlife.

야생동물도 멸절상태였죠

This was like a biological desert.

생물학적으론 사막과 같은 곳이었습니다

When I stood there in the grass, it's hot -- not even the sound of insects --

저 마른 풀밭 위엔 열기만 있었습니다 벌레 울음 소리 하나 없이

just this waving grass.

누런 잡초만 바람에 흔들렸습니다

Still, four years later we have created jobs for about 3,000 people.

하지만 4년 후 3천명이 저희를 통해 일자리를 얻었습니다

The climate has changed. I will show you:

기후도 변했습니다 이건 보여드릴 겁니다

no more flooding, no more fires.

홍수도 화재도 이젠 없습니다

It's no longer the poorest district,

최대 빈곤지역에서도 벗어났습니다

and there is a huge development of biodiversity.

그리고 생물다양성에 커다란 변화가 생겼습니다

We've got over 1,000 species. We have 137 bird species as of today.

1천여종 이상의 생물이 살고있죠 현재 137종의 조류와

We have 30 species of reptiles.

30종의 파충류가 서식하고 있습니다

So what happened here? We created a huge economic failure in this forest.

이곳에 무슨 일이 있었을까요 저희는 숲의 기존 경제체제를 무너뜨려 버렸습니다

So basically the whole process of destruction

그 덕에 전체적인 산림 파괴에 근본적인 제약이 가해졌고

had gone a bit slower than what is happening now with the oil palm.

현재는 야자유 생산속도보다 파괴 진행 속도가 조금 느려졌죠

But we saw the same thing.

하지만 같은 현상이 계속 나타났습니다

We had slash and burn agriculture;

농업이 무너지고 농지가 불탔습니다

people cannot afford the fertilizer,

사람들은 비료를 살 형편이 되지 않아

so they burn the trees and have the minerals available there;

나무를 태웠고 광물도 절반이나 불태웠죠

the fires become more frequent,

화재가 빈번해져 갔습니다

and after a while you're stuck with an area of land

이렇게 얼마가 지나니 눈 앞엔

where there is no fertility left.

척박함만 남은 땅이 있었습니다

There are no trees left.

나무 한 그루도 남아 있지 않았죠

Still, in this place, in this grassland

하지만 바로 이 곳 이 초원 언덕에

where you can see our very first office there on that hill,

저희는 첫번째 사무소를 세웠습니다

four years later, there is this one green blop on the Earth's surface ...

4년이 지나고 이 땅은 이렇게 푸른빛으로 뒤덮히게 되었죠

(Applause)

And there are all these animals, and all these people happy,

이 땅에 있는 이 모든 동물과 행복한 사람들

and there's this economic value.

그리고 여기서 만들어진 경제적 가치

So how's this possible?

어떻게 이런 일이 가능했을까요

It was quite simple. If you'll look at the steps:

그 절차란게 직접 보시면 꽤 간단합니다

we bought the land, we dealt with the fire,

땅을 매입하고 산불을 해결한 뒤

and then only, we started doing the reforestation

숲을 다시 세우기 시작했습니다

by combining agriculture with forestry.

여기에 농업도 접목해서요

Only then we set up the infrastructure and management and the monetary.

그 뒤에야 기반 시설을 세우고 재정을 관리해 나갔습니다

But we made sure that in every step of the way

이 모든 과정에서 저희의 최우선 과제는

the local people were going to be fully involved

지역 주민이 전적으로 사업에 참여하는 데 있었죠

so that no outside forces would be able to interfere with that.

외부인력의 유입을 막고 싶었습니다

The people would become the defenders of that forest.

그래야 주민 스스로가 숲을 지키게 될테니까요

So we do the "people, profit, planet" principles,

그래서 "사람, 지구 그리고 상생"이란 원칙을 세우고 지켰죠

but we do it in addition

그리고 여기에 하나 더해

to a sure legal status --

소유주를 해당 지역으로 등록했습니다

because if the forest belongs to the state,

왜냐하면 그 지역이 숲의 주인이어야

people say, "It belongs to me, it belongs to everyone."

이 땅은 내 땅이고 우리 땅이라 생각할테니까요

And then we apply all these other principles

그리곤 다른 원칙들을 적용해 갔습니다

like transparency, professional management, measurable results,

투명성, 관리 전문성, 결과의 가시성,

scalability, [unclear], etc.

적용성, 재생성 등을 생각하시면 됩니다

What we did was we formulated recipes --

매뉴얼을 하나 만든 거죠

how to go from a starting situation where you have nothing

아무 것도 없는 곳에서 시작하여 목표한 상황을

to a target situation.

만드는 매뉴얼로

You formulate a recipe based upon the factors you can control,

실제 사용할 수 있는 요소를 접목하여 만드는 거죠

whether it be the skills or the fertilizer or the plant choice.

기술, 비료, 재배 작물 등의 선정 방법이죠

And then you look at the outputs and you start measuring what comes out.

그리고 그 결과를 조사하여 이를 분석하는 겁니다

Now in this recipe you also have the cost.

이 매뉴얼엔 비용에 관한 사항도 포함되어 있습니다

You also know how much labor is needed.

필요한 노동력이 어느 정도인지도 알 수 있죠

If you can drop this recipe on the map

이 매뉴얼을 지도에 있는 모든 지역 즉

on a sandy soil, on a clay soil,

모래 지역, 진흙 지역

on a steep slope, on flat soil,

비탈 지역, 평야 지역에 적용할 수 있다면

you put those different recipes; if you combine them,

각각 서로 다른 매뉴얼로 발전하게 됩니다 그리고

out of that comes a business plan,

이를 다 결합하면 사업 계획을 세울 수 있죠

comes a work plan, and you can optimize it

작업 계획이 나옵니다 그러면 이를 최대 활용하여

for the amount of labor you have available or for the amount of fertilizer you have,

동원할 수 있는 노동력과 비료양에 맞게 조절하면

and you can do it.

여러분도 저희처럼 할 수 있습니다

This is how it looks like in practice. We have this grass we want to get rid of.

실제로 적용한 예를 보시겠습니다 우선 이런 잡초를 제거해야 합니다

It exudes [unclear]-like compounds from the roots.

잡초는 뿌리에서 일종의 화학물질을 배출하고

The acacia trees are of a very low value

아카시아 나무는 별 쓸모가 없지요

but we need them to restore the micro-climate, to protect the soil

하지만 잡초제거, 토양보호 기후환경 회복을 위해선

and to shake out the grasses.

이 나무들이 필요합니다

And after eight years they might actually yield some timber --

그리고 사실 8년정도 재배하면 목재로도 어느 정도 쓸 수 있습니다

that is, if you can preserve it in the right way,

제대로 보존할 수 있을 경우에 한하긴 하지만요

which we can do with bamboo peels.

하지만 대나무 껍질을 이용하면 할 수 있습니다

It's an old temple-building technique from Japan

일본 전통 사원 건축법이죠

but bamboo is very fire-susceptible.

그런데 대나무는 가연성이 매우 강한 나무입니다

So if we would plant that in the beginning

즉 처음부터 대나무를 심는 다는 것은

we would have a very high risk of losing everything again.

모든 것을 한 번에 잃을 수도 있는 위험을 감수한다는 말이죠

So we plant it later, along the waterways

그러니 대나무는 나중에 수로를 심어야 하는 것입니다

to filter the water, provide the raw products

대나무로 물도 정화하고 나무도 잘 보존하여

just in time for when the timber becomes available.

적정시기에 원자재 공급도 가능해지는 것이죠

So the idea is: how to integrate these flows

그러니까 시간과 장소에 맞춰 제한된 수단으로

in space, over time and with the limited means you have.

이 모든 과정을 유기적으로 연결하는 일이 핵심인 것입니다

So we plant the trees, we plant these pineapples

나무를 심고 이렇게 파인애플을 심고

and beans and ginger in between, to reduce the competition for the trees,

나무간 경쟁을 줄일 목적으로 사이사이 콩과 생강도 심습니다

the crop fertilizer. Organic material is useful for the agricultural crops,

비료는 유기농 제품이 농작물이나 사람들에게도 좋지만

for the people, but also helps the trees. The farmers have free land,

나무에도 양분을 줍니다 농민들도 토지를 소유하고 있어

the system yields early income, the orangutans get healthy food

수익을 빨리 낼 수 있습니다 오랑우탄도 신선한 먹이를 먹게되고

and we can speed up ecosystem regeneration

생태계 재생 속도도 가속화됩니다

while even saving some money.

더불어 비용 절약도 할 수 있죠

So beautiful. What a theory.

대단하죠 완벽한 이론입니다

But is it really that easy?

그런데 정말 이렇게 쉽게 될까요

Not really, because if you looked at what happened in 1998,

실제론 그렇지 않았습니다 1998년 사건을 보시면 압니다

the fire started.

산불이 시작됐죠

This is an area of about 50 million hectares.

5천만 헥타르 넓이의 지역입니다

January.

1월

February.

2월

March.

3월

April.

4월

May.

5월

We lost 5.5 million hectares in just a matter of a few months.

이 몇달 사이 저희는 550만 헥타르 지역을 유실했습니다

This is because we have 10,000 of those underground fires

지하에서 발생된 1만건의 화재가 원인이었습니다

that you also have in Pennsylvania here in the United States.

여기 미국 펜실베니아에서도 진행되고있는 일이죠

And once the soil gets dried, you're in a dry season -- you get cracks,

건기가 되면 땅은 말라 갈라졌고 갈라진 틈으로

oxygen goes in, flames come out and the problem starts all over again.

산소가 유입되어 불길이 솟아오르는 악순환이 반복됐습니다

So how to break that cycle?

이 고리를 어떻게 끊어내느냐

Fire is the biggest problem.

화재가 가장 큰 문제인거죠

This is what it looked like for three months.

지금 보시는 모습이 3개월간 지속됐습니다

For three months, the automatic lights outside did not go off

3개월 동안 외부의 자동전조등은 꺼지지 않았습니다

because it was that dark.

그만큼 어두웠습니다

We lost all the crops. No children gained weight for over a year;

농작물 전부가 불에 탔고 일년 이상 아이들 몸무게는 늘지 않았습니다

they lost 12 IQ points. It was a disaster

지능 지수는 12포인트 떨어졌죠 악몽이었습니다

for orangutans and people.

오랑우탄과 사람 모두에게요

So these fires are really the first things to work on.

불을 다스리는 일이 시급했습니다

That was why I put it as a single point up there.

그래서 저는 화재 진압 하나에만 집중했습니다

And you need the local people for that because these grasslands,

이 일엔 지역 주민들이 필요합니다 왜냐하면

once they start burning ... It goes through it like a windstorm

이 초지가 한 번 타기 시작하면 폭풍처럼 휩쓸어오면서

and you lose again the last bit of ash and nutrients

양분이든 재든 남지않고 전부 잃게되기 때문입니다

to the first rainfall -- going to the sea

첫 비가 내려 바다로 흘러가면서

killing off the coral reefs there.

지하 석탄층에 불을 꺼주기 전까지 계속 됩니다

So you have to do it with the local people.

지역 주민들의 도움을 반드시 받아야 하는 이유입니다

That is the short-term solution but you also need a long-term solution.

이건 단기적인 해결책이니 장기적인 것도 필요합니다

So what we did is, we created

그래서 저희는 이 지역 주변에

a ring of sugar palms around the area.

사탕야자로 띠를 만들었습니다

These sugar palms turn out to be fire-resistant --

이 사탕야자는 불에 잘 타지 않을 뿐더러

also flood-resistant, by the way --

홍수도 견딜 수 있다 알려져있죠

and they provide a lot of income for local people.

결국 이는 주민들에게 막대한 수입을 가져다 주었습니다

This is what it looks like:

그 방법은 이렇습니다

the people have to tap them twice a day -- just a millimeter slice --

나무를 1밀리미터만 잘라내고 하루에 두 번 수액을 받아냅니다

and the only thing you harvest is sugar water,

이 과정에선 사탕 수액과 이산화탄소

carbon dioxide, rain fall and a little bit of sunshine.

In principle, you make those trees into

biological photovoltaic cells.

And you can create so much energy from this --

they produce three times more energy per hectare per year,

because you can tap them on a daily basis.

You don't need to harvest [unclear]

or any other of the crops.

So this is the combination where we have all this genetic potential in the tropics,

which is still unexploited, and doing it in combination with technology.

아직 개발되지 않은 열대우림에서 살리고 기술과 조화를 이룰 수 있습니다

But also your legal side needs to be in very good order.

그러면서 법률문제도 투명하게 운영해야 하죠

So we bought that land,

그렇게 저희는 땅을 매입하고

and here is where we started our project --

이곳에서 프로젝트를 시작했습니다

in the middle of nowhere.

이 허허벌판에서요

And if you zoom in a bit you can see that all of this area

is divided into strips that go over different types of soil,

and we were actually monitoring,

measuring every single tree in these 2,000 hectares, 5,000 acres.

And this forest is quite different.

다른 숲과는 꽤나 다른 곳이었죠

What I really did was I just followed nature,

실제 저희가 한 일은 자연법칙을 지키는 것이었습니다

and nature doesn't know monocultures,

자연은 단일문화체계가 아닙니다

but a natural forest is multilayered.

여러겹의 층으로 숲하나를 이루고 있죠

That means that both in the ground and above the ground

지하와 지상 모두가 복합적인 층을 이룬다는 말이었죠

it can make better use of the available light,

하지만 빛을 더 잘 활용할 수 있고

it can store more carbon in the system, it can provide more functions.

더 많은 탄소를 저장할 수 있는 체계입니다. 더 많은 기능도 있죠

But, it's more complicated. It's not that simple, and you have to work with the people.

하지만 더 복잡하기도 합니다 간단하지도 않은데 일은 사람들과 같이 해야 하죠

So, just like nature,

하지만 저희는 자연의 법칙을 따라갔습니다

we also grow fast planting trees and underneath that,

빨리 크는 나무를 심어 어느정도 자라면

we grow the slower growing, primary-grain forest trees of a very high diversity

그 아래에 다양한 종류의 열매나무를 심었습니다 천천히 자라는 것들로요

that can optimally use that light. Then,

이들은 빛을 최대한 활용할 수 있는 종들입니다

what is just as important: get the right fungi in there

이 과정에서 가장 중요한 일은 균류의 확보입니다

that will grow into those leaves, bring back the nutrients

균이 자라 나무잎에 침투하면 그 잎사귀가 24시간 내에 떨어져

to the roots of the trees that have just dropped that leaf within 24 hours.

나무 뿌리에 양분을 공급하게 됩니다

And they become like nutrient pumps.

그렇게 양분펌프가 되는 거죠

You need the bacteria to fix nitrogen,

더욱이 질소고정에 박테리아는 필수입니다

and without those microorganisms, you won't have any performance at all.

이런 미생물체계가 없이는 어떤 결과도 얻어낼 수가 없습니다

And then we started planting -- only 1,000 trees a day.

그리고 나무를 심습니다 저희는 하루 천그루만 심었습니다

We could have planted many, many more, but we didn't want to

더 많이 심을 수야 있었지만 그렇지 않았습니다

because we wanted to keep the number of jobs stable.

그래야 일자리수를 유지할 수 있었기 때문입니다

We didn't want to lose the people

나중에 이 농장에서 일할 주민들인데

that are going to work in that plantation.

잃고 싶지 않았습니다

And we do a lot of work here.

그 외에도 이곳에서 많은 일을 하고 있는데요

We use indicator plants to look at what soil types,

토질의 유형을 파악하기 위한 식물들을 따로 심고 있습니다

or what vegetables will grow, or what trees will grow here.

어떤 채소가 자랄지 무슨 나무가 클 지 알아보는 거죠

And we have monitored every single one of those trees from space.

그리고 나무 한 그루 한그루를 인공위성으로 관찰합니다

This is what it looks like in reality;

실제 모습인데요

you have this irregular ring around it,

여기 울퉁부퉁한 선이 둘러진게 보이시죠

with strips of 100 meters wide, with sugar palms

백미터 폭으로 사탕야자를 심은 겁니다

that can provide income for 648 families.

648가구의 수입원이 될 수 있는 양이죠

It's only a small part of the area.

전 지역의 일부분에 불과한데도요

The nursery, in here, is quite different.

이곳 종자 배양도 다른 곳과 많이 다릅니다

If you look at the number of tree species we have in Europe, for instance,

예를 들어 유럽내 나무 종자수를 살펴보면

from the Urals up to England, you know how many?

혹시 우랄지역에서 영국까지 몇개인지 아십니까

In this nursery, we're going to grow 10 times more than the number of species.

이 배양소에서는 그 10배를 배양할 계획입니다

Can you imagine?

상상이 되시나요

You do need to know what you are working with,

지금 어떤 일을 보고계신지 아셔야 합니다

but it's that diversity which makes it work.

그런데 진짜 성공은 식물 다양성에 있습니다

That you can go from this zero situation,

그러니까 아무 것도 없이 0 이라는 상황에서

by planting the vegetables and the trees, or directly, the trees

저기 저 초지에 줄을 맞춰

in the lines in that grass there,

채소와 나무 혹은 나무를 심고

putting up the buffer zone, producing your compost,

완충 지대를 만들고 비료를 만들고

and then making sure that at every stage of that up growing forest

시시각각 숲의 상태를 단계별로 전부 확인하고 살피면

there are crops that can be used.

여러 방면으로 쓸 수 있는 열매가 생깁니다

In the beginning, maybe pineapples and beans and corn;

시작은 파인애플, 콩, 옥수수로 할 수 있습니다

in the second phase, there will be bananas and papayas;

두번째 단계에서 바나나와 파파야를 심는 겁니다

later on, there will be chocolate and chilies.

그리고 초콜릿과 칠리를 심습니다

And then slowly, the trees start taking over,

그러면 느리지만 나무들이 자라나기 시작합니다

bringing in produce from the fruits, from the timber, from the fuel wood.

열매로 목재로 연료로 수입이 들어오지요

And finally, the sugar palm forest takes over

그러면 마지막으로 사탕야자수가 쑥 자라면서

and provides the people with permanent income.

주민들에게 고정적 수입을 안겨주게 됩니다

On the top left, underneath those green stripes,

And in that area we started growing some acacia trees

that you just saw before.

So this is after one year.

And this is after two years.

2년 뒤 모습이죠

And that's green. If you look from the tower --

저 탑에서 바라보면 전체가 초록빛입니다

this is when we start attacking the grass.

처음에 이 풀밭은 이러했습니다

We plant in the seedlings

이 곳에 어린 묘목을 심었습니다

mixed with the bananas, the papayas, all the crops for the local people,

바나나, 파파야등 지역주민을 위한 온갖 곡물을 같이 심었죠

but the trees are growing up fast in between as well.

그럼에도 나무들은 빠르게 자랐습니다

And three years later, 137 species of birds are living here.

3년 뒤 137종의 새가 살게 되었습니다

So we lowered air temperature three to five degrees Celsius.

이렇게 되니 대기 온도가 섭씨 3에서 5도 내려가더군요

Air humidity is up 10 percent.

습도는 10퍼센트 상승했고

Cloud cover -- I'm going to show it to you -- is up.

보시겠지만 구름양도 많아졌습니다

Rainfall is up.

강수량도 올라가고

And all these species and income.

이 모든 생물종을 통해 수입창출도 이뤄졌죠

This ecolodge that I built here,

이 곳에 제가 일으켜세운 생태계는

three years before, was an empty, yellow field.

3년 전만해도 황량하고 누런 벌판이었습니다

This transponder that we operate with the European Space Agency --

저희는 유럽우주기구과 공동으로 이 자동수신기를 사용하고 있습니다

it gives us the benefit that every satellite that comes over to calibrate itself

이걸로 자체 관측을 하다 이 지역을 지나게 되는 모든 인공위성을 이용해

is taking a picture.

사진을 찍고 있습니다

Those pictures we use to analyze how much carbon, how the forest is developing,

해당 사진은 탄소양과 숲의 개발 상태를 분석하는데 사용하고 있습니다

and we can monitor every tree using satellite images through our cooperation.

또한 저희 기관에선 이 위성사진을 이용해 모든 나무를 지켜 보고 있습니다

We can use these data now

하지만 지금은 개발 매뉴얼과 동일 기술을

to provide other regions with recipes and the same technology.

타지역에 제공하는 데 보조자료로 이를 이용하고 있습니다

We actually have it already with Google Earth.

실제 구글 어스와 이미 일을 하고 있는데요

If you would use a little bit of your technology to put tracking devices in trucks,

트럭 추적 장치를 장착하는 기술에

and use Google Earth in combination with that,

구글어스의 기술력을 더하면

you could directly tell what palm oil has been sustainably produced,

현재 생산되는 친환경 야자유 종류나

which company is stealing the timber,

목재 절도 기업을 바로 알 수 있고

and you could save so much more carbon

탄소 배출양도 줄일 수 있습니다

than with any measure of saving energy here.

최상의 에너지 절약 방법이죠

So this is the Samboja Lestari area.

여기가 바로 삼보자 레스타리 지역입니다

You measure how the trees grow back,

나무가 얼마나 늘었는지 보이시죠

but you can also measure the biodiversity coming back.

이뿐 아니라 생물다양성이 얼마나 회복됐는지도 보실 수 있습니다

And biodiversity is an indicator of how much water can be balanced,

그런데 생물다양성은 그 자체가 하나의 지표가 됩니다

how many medicines can be kept here.

물 균형도나 약재 보유정도를 파악할 수 있죠

And finally I made it into the rain machine

이런 노력끝에 저는 숲을 제우기로 만들었습니다

because this forest is now creating its own rain.

이젠 자연적으로 비가 내리고 있기때문이죠

This nearby city of Balikpapan has a big problem with water;

여기 발릭파팡이란 근교 도시는 심각한 식수난을 겪고 있습니다

it's 80 percent surrounded by seawater,

도시 주변의 80퍼센트가 바다로 둘러싸여있죠

and we have now a lot of intrusion there.

지금은 지류가 많이 뻗어 들어가 있습니다

Now we looked at the clouds above this forest;

이젠 구름 사진을 보시겠는데요

we looked at the reforestation area, the semi-open area and the open area.

산림사업지역, 반민둥지역, 민둥지역 입니다

And look at these images.

I'll just run them very quickly through.

빨리 넘기도록 하겠습니다

In the tropics, raindrops are not formed from ice crystals,

열대지방에선 빗방울 생성에 얼음결정이 작용하질 않습니다

which is the case in the temperate zones,

극지방과는 다르죠

you need the trees with [unclear], chemicals that come out of the leaves of the trees

이 곳에선 나뭇잎에서 나오는 화학물질을 응결핵으로

that initiate the raindrops.

빗방울을 만듭니다

So you create a cool place where clouds can accumulate,

그러니 구름이 쌓일 수 있게 시원한 장소를 만들고

and you have the trees to initiate the rain.

비를 만드는 나무를 심으면 되는 것이죠

And look, there's now 11.2 percent more clouds --

이걸 보십시요 구름이 11.2퍼센트 이상 증가했습니다

already, after three years.

이게 불과 3년 후 수치입니다

If you look at rainfall, it was already up 20 percent at that time.

강우량도 보시면 당시 벌써 20퍼센트 상승했지요

Let's look at the next year,

그 다음해를 볼까요

and you can see that that trend is continuing.

이런 추세가 지속되고 있음이 보이실 겁니다

Where at first we had a small cap of higher rainfall,

처음에는 강우량이 소폭 상승했지만

that cap is now widening and getting higher.

이제는 점점 더 높아지고 있습니다

And if we look at the rainfall pattern

강우 패턴도 살펴보시겠습니다

above Samboja Lestari, it used to be the driest place,

삼보자 레스타리는 한 때 가장 건조한 지역이었죠

but now you see consistently see a peak of rain forming there.

하지만 지금은 최다 강우지역으로 자리를 굳혔습니다

So you can actually change the climate.

그러니 우리가 실제 기후도 바꿀 수 있다는 말입니다

When there are trade winds of course the effect disappears,

물론 무역풍이 일면 이런 효과가 사라집니다

but afterwards, as soon as the wind stabilizes,

하지만 바람이 잦아들기만 하면

you see again that the rainfall peaks come back above this area.

이 지역 강우량이 다시 최고 자리를 차지 합니다

So to say it is hopeless is not the right thing to do,

그러니까 희망이 없다는 말은 틀린 말이지요

because we actually can make that difference

왜냐하면 다양한 여러 기술을 통합한다면

if you integrate the various technologies.

우리 모두가 이런 변화를 만들어낼 수 있으니까요

And it's nice to have the science, but it still depends mostly upon the people,

과학이 있다는 건 좋은 일입니다 하지만 일의 핵심은 여전히 사람과

on your education.

교육에 달려있습니다

We have our farmer schools.

저희는 농부학교를 운영하고 있습니다

But the real success of course, is our band --

저희 사업에서 가장 의미있는 성공은 유대감에 있습니다

because if a baby is born, we will play, so everyone's our family

아이 하나가 태어나면 저희 모두가 기뻐하죠 우리 모두가 한 가족입니다

and you don't make trouble with your family.

가족은 서로에게 해를 가하지 않습니다

This is how it looks.

We have this road going around the area,

which brings the people electricity and water from our own area.

We have the zone with the sugar palms,

and then we have this fence with very thorny palms

가시가 많은 야자수로 울타리를 둘러세웠습니다

to keep the orangutans -- that we provide with a place to live in the middle --

오랑우탄을 보호하는 거죠 이 지역 중간에 이들이 살 공간을 마련해주었습니다

and the people apart.

사람들과 떨어뜨려 놓은 겁니다

And inside, we have this area for reforestation

울타리 안쪽으로 산림 재건 사업을 실시했습니다

as a gene bank to keep all that material alive,

이 모든 생물이 살아갈 수 있는 유전자 은행 노릇을 하게 했죠

because for the last 12 years

지난 12년 동안

not a single seedling of the tropical hardwood trees has grown up

열대수 묘목 중 단 한그루도 자라질 못했습니다

because the climatic triggers have disappeared.

성장촉진제 역할을 하는 기후가 사라졌기 때문이죠

All the seeds get eaten.

씨는 다 먹혀버렸습니다

So now we do the monitoring on the inside --

현재 저희는 안쪽 숲을 관찰하고 있습니다

from towers, satellites, ultralights.

관측탐과 인공위성 적외선 카메라를 이용하고 있죠

Each of the families that have sold their land now get a piece of land back.

저희에게 땅을 팔았던 가정들은 현재 토지 일부를 돌려받은 상태로

And it has two nice fences of tropical hardwood trees --

열대수로 만든 멋진 이중 울타리가 세워져있습니다

you have the shade trees planted in year one,

첫 해에는 그늘이 질 만큼 큰 나무를 심습니다

then you underplanted with the sugar palms,

그리고 관목을 심으면서 사탕야자도 심죠

and you plant this thorny fence.

그리고 가시야자 울타리를 세웁니다

And after a few years, you can remove some of those shade trees.

그렇게 몇 년이 지나면 먼저 심은 큰 나무를 몇 그루 제거합니다

The people get that acacia timber which we have preserved with the bamboo peel,

그러면 사람들은 대나무껍질로 보존한 아카시아 목재를 쓸 수 있고

and they can build a house, they have some fuel wood to cook with.

집을 짓거나 요리 하는데 쓰는 땔깜으로도 쓸 수 있습니다

And they can start producing from the trees as many as they like.

그리고 원하는 만큼 나무 열매를 채취할 수 있게 됩니다

They have enough income for three families.

3인 가족에게 충분한 소득을 거둘 수 있습니다

But whatever you do in that program, it has to be fully supported by the people,

하지만 프로그램에서 무슨 일을 추진하든 사람들의 지지는 확실하게 챙겨놔야 합니다

meaning that you also have to adjust it to the local, cultural values.

프로그램을 해당 지역과 문화가치에 맞게 조정할 수 있어야 한다는 의미죠

There is no simple one recipe for one place.

쉽고 간단한 방법이란 없습니다

You also have to make sure that it is very difficult to corrupt --

부정행위도 일어나지 않게 해야 합나다

that it's transparent.

투명성을 지키는 거죠

Like here, in Samboja Lestari,

이곳 삼보자 레스타리에서

we divide that ring in groups of 20 families.

저희는 20가정씩 조를 나눴습니다

If one member trespasses the agreement,

한 사람이 약속을 어기고

and does cut down trees,

벌목행위를 한 경우

the other 19 members have to decide what's going to happen to him.

나머지 19가정은 해당 가정의 처벌을 결정할 수 있습니다

If the group doesn't take action,

나머지 조원들이 아무 조치도 취하지 않으면

the other 33 groups have to decide what is going to happen to the group

다른 33개 조가 해당 조를 어떻게 할 지 정해야 하죠

that doesn't comply with those great deals that we are offering them.

저희가 제안한 계약 조건이기 때문이죠

In North Sulawesi it is the cooperative --

술라웨시 북부 지역은 협조적이었습니다

they have a democratic culture there,

그 지역 자체에 민주주의 문화가 있었고

so there you can use the local justice system to protect your system.

그곳에서는 우리 체제를 보호하는데 이 지역의 사법 체제를 이용할 수 있었습니다

In summary, if you look at it, in year one the people can sell their land

정리해보면 이렇습니다 첫해에 주민들은 땅을 팝니다

to get income, but they get jobs back in the construction and the reforestation,

소득을 위해서죠 그리고 건설현장과 우림 재건 사업을 통해 다시 일자리를 얻습니다

the working with the orangutans, and they can use the waste wood to make handicraft.

오랑우탄관련 일을 하며 못쓰게 된 나무로 수공예품도 만들 수 있습니다

They also get free land in between the trees,

나무 사이에 있는 땅을 사서

where they can grow their crops.

곡식을 키울 수도 있습니다

They can now sell part of those fruits to the orangutan project.

지금은 재배한 작물로 오랑우탄 프로젝트팀과 거래도 하고 있습니다

They get building material for houses,

집을 짓기 위한 건축 자재를 얻게되고

a contract for selling the sugar,

사탕 판매 계약도 맺게되죠

so we can produce huge amounts of ethanol and energy locally.

또 어마어마한 양의 에탄올과 에너지를 생산해 낼 수 있습니다

They get all these other benefits: environmentally, money,

주민 모두가 환경적으로 재정적으로 이러한 혜택을 누리게 됩니다

they get education -- it's a great deal.

교육도 받게되죠 큰 사업입니다

And everything is based upon that one thing --

이 모든 일은 단 한가지 배경위에 있습니다

make sure that forest remains there.

숲을 그 자리에 지키는 것

So if we want to help the orangutans --

그러니 오랑우탄을 돕고 싶으면

what I actually set out to do --

이게 제 사업의 목적이기도 했지만요

we must make sure that the local people are the ones that benefit.

지역 주민이 하나의 혜택이라도 받을 수 있게 해야합니다

Now I think the real key to doing it, to give a simple answer,

쉽게 말해 이를 위한 단 하나의 열쇠는

is integration.
