So, I had been a photographer

And in that time, I had shot global ad campaigns,

I got to a point in my career that I dreamed of getting to,

and yet, for some reason, I still felt a little bit unfulfilled.

Despite the extraordinary things I was shooting and experiencing,

they'd started to feel a little bit ordinary to me.

I was also getting concerned

about how disposable photography had started to feel in the digital world,

and I really wanted to produce images that had a sense of worth again.

And I needed a subject that felt extraordinary.

그러기 위해선 특별한 대상이 필요했죠.

Sometimes I wish I had the eyes of a child.

때로 저는 아이의 눈을 가졌으면 하고 상상합니다

And by that I mean, I wish I could look at the world

그렇게 된다면 저는 제가 어린 소년일 때처럼

in the same as I did when I was a small boy.

세상을 바라볼 수 있을테니까요.

I think there is a danger, as we get older,

나이를 먹는다는 것은 우리가 갖고 있던 호기심을

that our curiosity becomes slightly muted or dulled by familiarity.

익숙함으로 인해 잃어버리는 위험을 안게 된다는 것과 같습니다.

And as a visual creator, one of the challenges for me

시각 예술가로서 저는 익숙함을 새롭고 매력적인 방법으로

is to present the familiar in a new and engaging way.

Fortunately for me, though, I've got two great kids

who are still curious about the world.

Sebastian -- he's still curious about the world, and in 2014, in spring,

he brought in a ground beetle from the garden.

There was nothing particularly special about this insect --

딱정벌레는 딱히 특별한 구석이 없습니다.

you know, it was a common species.

But he was still curious,

and he brought it up to my office,

and we decided to look at it under his microscope.

He had a little science kit for Christmas.

And this is what we saw.

Now, when I first saw this, it blew me away.

처음 봤을 때, 저는 완전히 빠져버렸어요.

Up here -- this is the back of the ground beetle.

여기 이 부분이 딱정벌레의 등입니다.

When I first saw it, it reminded me of a galaxy.

처음 봤을 때, 은하와 비슷하다고 생각했죠.

And all the time, this had just been outside our window.

이 녀석은 저의 집 창문 너머에 계속 있었죠.

You know, I was looking for this extraordinary subject,

세바스찬의 눈과 호기심이

and it took Seb's eyes and curiosity to bring it in to me.

제가 찾고 있던 특별한 대상을 발견할 수 있도록 도와준 것입니다.

So I decided to photograph it for him, and this is what I produced.

그래서 저는 세바스찬을 위해 딱정벌레의 사진을 찍었는데 바로 이 사진입니다.

I basically asked myself two simple questions.

저는 스스로에게 두 가지 질문을 던졌습니다.

The first one:

첫 번째

Could I take all my knowledge and skill of photographic lighting

내가 가진 사진 광학 지식과 기술을

and take that onto a subject that's five millimeters long?

5mm 짜리 대상에게도 적용할 수 있을까?

But also: Could I keep creative control over that lighting

또, 이 작은 대상에게 빛을 쬐는 창의적인 방법을 찾을 수 있을까?

on a subject that size?

So I practiced on some other found specimens,

and I approached the Oxford University Museum of Natural History

to see if I could have access to their collection,

to progress the project.

And I went up there for a meeting,

and I showed them some of the images that I'd been shooting,

and they could see the kind of detail I was able to get.

I don't think they'd ever really seen anything quite like it before,

and from that point forward, they gave me open access

and the assistance of Dr. James Hogan, their entomologist.

Now, over the next two-and-a-half years,

I shot 37 insects from their collection.

And the way I work

is that I essentially split the insect up into multiple sections,

and I treat each one of those sections like a small still life.

So for example, if I was photographing the eye of the insect,

which is normally quite smooth and dome-shaped,

then I'd use a light source that is large and soft and diffuse,

so I don't get any harsh hot spots on that surface.

눈의 어느 한 부분에 빛이 집중되지 않도록 하는 것이죠.

But once my attention turns over to a hairy leg,

that lighting setup will change completely.

방법이 완전히 달라지게 됩니다.

And so I make that one tiny section look as beautiful as I possibly can,

and I work my way across the insect

until I have about 20 or 25 different sections.

The issue with photography at high magnification

is that there is inherently a very shallow depth of field.

피사계 심도가 아주 낮아진다는 것입니다.

So to get around that, what I do is,

I put my camera on a rail

that I can automate to move 10 microns in between each shot.

That's about one-seventh the width of a human hair.

And then that provides me with a deep stack of images.

Each has a tiny sliver of focus all the way through.

And I can squash that down

to produce one image that is fully focused from front to back.

So essentially, that gives me 25 sections that are fully focused

and beautifully lit.

Now, each one of my images

is made up of anywhere between 8- and 10,000 separate shots.

8천 장에서 1만 장의 각각 다른 샷 이 합쳐져 탄생했습니다.

They take about three-and-a-half weeks to create,

하나를 만드는 데 3주 반 정도가 소요되고요.

and the file sizes on average are about four gigabytes.

So I've got plenty of information to play with when I'm printing.

프린트할 이미지는 차고 넘치죠.

And the prints at the exhibition are around the three-meter mark.

In fact, I had a show in Milan two weeks ago,

실은 2주 전에 밀라노에서 전시회가 있었는데요.

and we had some prints there that were nine meters long.

9m나 되는 이미지도 있었습니다.

But, you know, I realize

하지만 제 작업을 디지털화 하는데는

that these images still have to work in the digital world.

많은 난관이 있습니다.

There's no point in me putting all my blood, sweat and tears

만약 제 이미지들이 화면 위에서 500픽셀 짜리 이미지에 불과하다면

into these pictures

if they're only going to be showing 500 pixels on a screen.

So with the help of Rob Chandler and Will Cookson,

we developed a website

that enables the viewer to immerse themselves

I first showed the work at Oxford,

and since then, it's moved on to the Middle East.

And the feedback has been great.

You know, I get emails, actually, from all over the world --

from teachers, at the moment, who are using the website in school.

The kids are using them on the tablet.

아이들은 태블릿을 이용해서

화면을 확대하고

They're zooming into the pictures

미술이나 생물학 수업에 활용합니다.

and using it for art class, biology class.

And that's not something I planned.

생각지도 못했던 성과죠.

That's just a beautiful offshoot of the project.

제 프로젝트가 이룬, 생각지도 못한 멋진 성과예요.

In fact, one of the things I like to do at the exhibitions

사실 제가 전시회에서 정말 보고 싶은 것은

is actually look at the kiddies' reactions.

아이들의 반응이에요.

And, you know, standing in front of a three-meter insect,

실은 3m나 되는 곤충의 앞에 서면

겁먹게 될지도 모릅니다.

they could have been horrified.

하지만 실제로는 그 반대입니다. 경이로움에 가득차죠.

But they're not. They look in wonder.

여기 이 작은 친구는 미동도 없이 5분간 서 있었습니다.

This little chap here, he stood there for five minutes, motionless.

(웃음)

(Laughter)

하루의 끝, 그니까 전시회가 열린 날의 마지막에

And at the end of the day, actually, at the end of the day at the exhibitions,

we have to wipe down the lower third of the big prints --

우리는 이미지 하단 3분의 1을 깨끗이 닦아야 했습니다.

(웃음)

just to remove all those sticky handprints,

이 커다란 벌레를 만지고 싶어하는

because all they want to do is touch those big bugs.

사람들 덕에 끈적거리는 손자국이 가득했거든요.

I do want to leave you with one final image, if that's OK.

This has to do with Charles Darwin.

찰스 다윈과 관련 있습니다.

One of the recent images that I photographed

최근에 제가 찍은 사진 하나가

바로 이 사진입니다.

was this one here.

I'm talking about the creature in the box, not my cat.

제 고양이가 아니라 상자 안의 벌레를 봐주세요.

금노린재라고 하는데요.

And this is a shield bug

that Charles Darwin brought back from Australia

찰스 다윈이 1836년 HMS 비글호를 타고

호주에서 가져온 종이죠.

on the HMS Beagle in 1836.

And when I got it home,

제가 금노린재를 집으로 가져왔을 때

I stood in my kitchen and stared at it for about 20 minutes.

저는 부엌에 서서 20분 간 이 녀석을 관찰했습니다.

제가 이 신기한 곤충에게 푹 빠졌다는 걸 믿기 힘들었죠.

I couldn't believe I was in possession of this beautiful creature.

And at that moment, I kind of realized

그 때 저는 금노린재가

제 프로젝트에 적합하다는 느낌같은 것을 받았습니다.

that this validated the project for me.

The fact that the museum was willing to risk me playing with this

박물관이 제게 컬렉션에 손 댈 수 있게 허락한 일 자체가

제 작품들이 가치가 있다는 것을 보여주는 거라 생각했어요.

kind of showed me that my images had worth --

you know, they weren't disposable.

단순한 일회용 사진이 아닙니다.

That's the image that I produced.

제가 제작한 사진들 말이죠.

I often wonder, still, when I look at this:

저는 제 작품을 보면 아직도 이런 생각을 하곤 합니다.

What would Charles Darwin make of these images?

찰스 다윈이라면 이 사진들로 뭘 만들어냈을까?

Do you think he'd like his picture of his shield bug? I hope so.

찰스 다윈도 자신이 찍은 금노린재 사진 을 좋아했을까요? 그랬기를 바랍니다.

저는 제 방법이 굉장히 독특하다고 생각합니다.

You know, I think it's strange in a way.

저는 시각 예술에 종사하고 창의적인 사람이지만

I'm a visual person, I'm a creative person,

but I still needed the eyes of a child to find my extraordinary subject.

특별한 피사체를 위해서는 여전히 아이들의 눈이 필요합니다.

그렇게 해서 저는 제 작품들을 탄생시킬 수 있었죠.

That's the way it was.
