One day a one-eyed monkey came into the forest.

어느날 외눈박이 원숭이가 숲 속에 갔습니다.

Under a tree she saw a woman

meditating furiously.

그 여인은 맹렬히 명상을 하고 있었죠.

The one-eyed monkey recognized the woman, a Sekhri.

외눈박이 원숭이는 그 여인이 세크리(상층계급)임을 알아봤습니다.

She was the wife of an even more famous Brahmin.

그 여인은 굉장히 유명한 브라만(최상층계급)의 부인이었습니다.

To watch her better, the one-eyed monkey climbed onto the tree.

여인을 자세히 보기 위해, 외눈박이 원숭이는 나무위로 올라갔습니다.

Just then, with a loud bang,

바로 그때 쾅하는 소리를 내며

the heavens opened. (Claps)

하늘이 열렸습니다.

And the god Indra jumped into the clearing.

그리고 인드라 신이 평지 위로 뛰어내렸습니다.

Indra saw the woman, a Sekhri.

인드라가 세크리를 발견했습니다.

Ah-hah.

아-하.

The woman paid him no heed.

그 여인은 인드라를 쳐다보지도 않았습니다.

So, Indra, attracted, threw her onto the floor,

그런데, 이 여인에게 반한 인드라는

and proceeded to rape her.

그 여인을 바닥에 내던지고 겁탈을 했습니다.

Then Indra disappeared. (Clap! Clap!)

그리고는 인드라는 사라졌습니다.

And the woman's husband, the Brahmin, appeared.

그 때 그 여인의 남편 브라만이 다가왔습니다.

He realized at once what had happened.

그는 단박에 무슨 일이 일어났는지 알아차렸습니다.

So, he petitioned the higher gods

그래서 그는 인드라보다 더 높은 신께 탄원했습니다.

so that he may have justice.

옮고 그름을 따지기 위해서요.

So, the god Vishnu arrived.

그리하여, 비슈누 신이 당도했습니다.

"Are there any witnesses?"

"증인이 있는가?"

"Just a one-eyed monkey," said the Brahmin.

"외눈박이 원숭이 한마리가 있습니다" 라고 브라만이 말했습니다.

Now, the one-eyed monkey

외눈박이 원숭이는

really wanted for the woman, a Sekhri, to get justice,

세크리가 공정한 판결을 받길 간절히 바랐기 때문에

so she retold events exactly as they had happened.

어떤 일이 있었는지 정확하게 이야기했습니다.

Vishnu gave his judgment.

비슈누 신은 판결을 내렸습니다.

"The god Indra has sinned,

"인드라는 죄를 범했도다!

in that he has sinned against ... a Brahmin.

브라만에게 죄를 지었기 때문이다!

May he be called to wash away his sins."

인드라는 죄를 씻어낼지어다!"

So, Indra arrived,

그러자 인드라 신이 나타나

and performed the sacrifice of the horse.

말을 제물로 바쳤습니다.

And so it transpired

그리고 결국에는

that a horse was killed,

말은 죽고,

a god was made sin-free,

죄를 씻은 인드라는 기뻐서 날뛰었고,

a Brahmin's ego was appeased,

남편 브라만은 자존심을 세울 수 있었고,

a woman ... was ruined,

그 여인은.. 파멸했습니다.

and a one-eyed monkey was left ...

그리고 남겨진 외눈박이 원숭이는

very confused at what we humans call justice.

인간들이 말하는 정의가 뭔지 어리둥절했습니다.

In India there is a rape every three minutes.

인도에서는 3분마다 강간 사건이 발생합니다.

In India, only 25 percent of rapes

인도에서는 전체 강간사건 중, 단 25%만이

come to a police station,

경찰에 보고되고

and of these 25 percent that come to a police station,

이렇게 보고된 25%의 강간사건중

convictions are only in four percent of the cases.

오직 4%만이 유죄판결이 납니다.

That's a lot of women who don't get justice.

많은 여성들이 공정한 판결을 받지 못하고 있습니다.

And it's not only about women.

이건 여성들만의 문제가 아닙니다.

Look around you, look at your own countries.

여러분 주위나 여러분이 사는 나라를 살펴보세요.

There is a certain pattern in who gets charged with crimes.

범죄자로 지목되는 데에는 일정한 패턴이 있습니다.

If you're in Australia, it's mostly aboriginals who are in jail.

호주에서는 감옥가는 사람 대부분이 원주민이죠.

If you're in India, it's either Muslims or Adivasis,

인도라면, 이슬람 교도나 원주민,

our tribals, the Naxalites.

부족민, 반군집단인 낙살라이트들이고요.

If you're in the U.S., it's mostly the blacks.

만약 미국에서라면 흑인들이 대부분이겠죠.

There is a trend here.

이렇듯 특정한 경향이 있습니다.

And the Brahmins and the gods, like in my story,

제 얘기에서처럼, 브라만 계급과 신들은 절대진리이고

always get to tell their truth as The Truth.

그들의 말은 항상 진실로 받아들여집니다.

So, have we all become

그래서 우리 모두는 외눈박이

one-eyed -- two-eyed instead of one-eyed -- monkeys?

아니, 두 눈을 가진 원숭이처럼 되어버린 걸까요?

Have we stopped seeing injustice?

그래서 부당함을 못 본 체하는 걸까요?

You know, I have told this story

있잖아요..전 이 얘기를

close to 550 times,

거의 550번이나 했습니다.

in audiences in 40 countries,

세계 40개국의

to school students, to black-tie dinners at the Smithsonian, and so on and so forth,

학생한테도하고, 스미소니언 박물관 만찬 때나 다른 여러 곳에서요.

and every time it hits something.

그때마다 매번 가슴이 먹먹해 지곤 했습니다.

Now, if I were to go into the same crowd

제가 만약 위와같은 단체에 가서

and say, "I want to lecture you about justice and injustice,"

"정의와 부당함에 관해서 강연하고 싶다"라고만 말한다면

they would say, "Thank you very much, we have other things to do."

그들은 아마 "대단히 고맙지만 다른 할일들도 많아서요"라고 말했을것입니다.

And that is the astonishing power of art.

하지만, 예술은 놀라운 힘을 발휘하죠.

Art can go through where other things can't.

예술은 다른 사회제도가 할수 없는 것을 해냅니다.

You can't have barriers, because it breaks through your prejudices,

여러분 마음의 장벽도 소용없습니다. 왜냐하면 예술은 편견을 깨고

breaks through everything that you have as your mask,

"나는 이렇고, 나는 저렇다"고 규정하는

that says, "I am this, I am that, I am that."

모든 가면을 찢어버릴테니까요.

No. It breaks through those.

소용없어요. 예술은 그 모든 것을 허물어 버립니다.

And it reaches somewhere where other things don't.

그리고 예술은 다른것은 도달할 수없는 곳까지 도달합니다.

And in a world where attitudes are so difficult to change,

그리고 사고방식을 바꾸기 어려운 곳에서는

we need a language that reaches through.

그 지역을 파고들기 위한 특별한 언어가 필요합니다.

Hitler knew it; he used Wagner

히틀러는 그것을 알고 바그너(Wagner, 독일작곡가)를 이용해서

to make all the Nazis feel wonderful and Aryan.

모든 나찌들이 멋진 아리아인으로 느끼도록 만들었죠.

And Mr. Berlusconi knows it, as he sits atop

그리고 베를루스코니(Berlusconi, 이탈리아 총리)도 정권을 잡았을 때,

this huge empire of media and television and so on and so forth.

미디어와 텔레비전의 거대한 왕국이 그 언어라는 것을 알았죠.

And all of the wonderful creative minds who are in all the advertising agencies,

and who help corporate sell us things we absolutely don't require,

they also know the power of the arts.

모두 예술의 힘을 알았습니다.

For me it came very early.

저는 그런 사실을 일찍 알아차렸죠.

When I was a young child, my mother, who was a choreographer,

제가 어렸을때, 안무가인 어머니는

came upon a phenomenon that worried her.

우려할만한 어떤 현상을 목격했습니다.

It was a phenomenon where young brides

그 현상은 바로 구자라트 지역에서

were committing suicide in rural Gujarat,

어린신부들이 자살을 하는 것이었습니다.

because they were being forced to bring more and more money for their in-laws' families.

왜냐하면 시댁에서 지참금을 더 많이 가져오라고 그들을 압박했거든요.

And she created a dance piece which then Prime Minister Nehru saw.

어머니는 그 내용으로 안무를 하나 짰고, 그걸 네루 수상이 보게 되었습니다.

He came to talk to her and said, "What is this about?"

그는 다가와 어머니에게 말했습니다. "이 안무의 내용이 뭔가요?"

She told him and he set out the first inquiry

설명을 들은 그는, 오늘날 '지참금 춤'이라 불리는

into what today we call Dowry Dance.

이 안무 내용에 대한 조사를 처음으로 시작했습니다.

called Draupadi, I had similar experiences.

Big fat black mamas in the Bronx

브롱스에서는 덩치 큰 흑인 아줌마가

used to come and say, "Hey girl, that's it!"

이런 말을 했었죠. " 이봐 아가씨, 바로 그거야!"

And then these trendy young things in the Sorbonne would say,

그리고 소르본 대학에서 세련된 젊은이들은 이렇게 말했죠.

"Madame Draupadi, on n'est pas feministe, mais ça? Ça!"

"드라우파디 여사님, 우리들은 페미니스트가 아닌가요? 그렇죠? 그렇지!"

And then aboriginal women in Africa

그리고 아프리카에서도 원주민 여인이

would come and say, "This is it!"

이렇게 말했죠. "바로 그거예요!"

And I thought, "This is what we need,

전 이런 생각이 들었습니다.

as a language."

"이게 바로 우리에게 필요한 언어구나."

We had somebody from public health. And Devdutt also mentioned public health.

여기 공중보건 종사자분들도 계실테고, 앞서 데브두트 박사도 공중위생에 대해 언급했는데요.

Well, millions of people around the world die

그러니까..세계적으로 매년 수백만 명이

of waterborne disease every year.

수인성 질병으로 죽습니다.

And that's because there is no clean water to drink,

그 이유는 깨끗한 식수도 없고,

or in countries like India,

인도같은 나라에서는

people don't know that they need to soap their hands before defecation.

사람들이 배변전에 비누로 손을 씼어야 한다는 걸 모르기 때문입니다.

So, what do they do?

그럼, 사람들은 어떻게 하죠?

They drink the water they know is dirty,

물이 더러운 걸 알면서도 그 물을 마시고

they get cholera, they get diarrhea, they get jaundice

콜레라, 설사병, 황달에 걸려서

and they die.

결국 죽습니다.

And governments have not been able to provide clean water.

정부는 국민에게 깨끗한 물을 제공할 능력이 없습니다.

They try and build it. They try and build pipelines; it doesn't happen.

파이프라인을 설치하는 등의 노력을 해야 하지만, 그러지 않았죠.

And the MNCs give them machines that they cannot afford.

그리고 정부는 다국적기업이 파는 기계를 살 능력이없습니다.

So what do you do? Do you let them die?

그럼 어떻게 하죠? 사람들을 그냥 죽게 내버려둘껀가요?

Well, somebody had a great idea.

그때, 누군가 좋은 아이디어를 내놨습니다.

And it was a simple idea. It was an idea that could not profit anybody

아주 간단한 아이디어였죠. 누구도 이득을 얻을수는 없지만

but would help health in every field.

모든 지역의 공중위생에 도움이 되는 아이디어였죠.

Most houses in Asia and India

아시아나 인도에 있는 가정집은 대부분

have a cotton garment.

면으로 만든 옷을 한벌쯤은 가지고 있죠.

And it was discovered, and WHO endorses this,

세계보건기구도 지지한 어떤 사실이 발견됐는데요..

that a clean cotton garment folded eight times over,

깨끗한 면옷을 여덟번 접고, 거기에 물을 거르면

can reduce bacteria up to 80 percent from water sieved through.

박테리아를 80%까지 줄일수 있다는 것입니다.

So, why aren't governments blaring this on television?

그런데 왜 정부는 티비를 통해 이런 사실을 떠들어대지 않는걸까요?

Why isn't it on every poster across the third world?

왜 그런 사실이 제3세계 전역의 게시판마다 붙어있지 않는걸까요?

Because there is no profit in it.

왜냐하면 그래봐야 이득도 없고

Because nobody can get a kickback.

아무도 뒷돈을 챙기지 못하기 때문이죠.

But it still needs to get to people.

그렇지만 여전히 사람들에게 알릴 필요가 있습니다.

And here is one of the ways we get it to people.

여기, 그 사실을 사람들에게 알릴 한가지 방법이 있습니다.

며느리: 그러면 괜찮은 정수기 한대만이라도 사달라구요!!

I have a solution that requires neither machine,

Boy: Grand-dad, tell me the solution please.

손자 : 할아버지, 해결책을 알려주세요..제발~~

Man: I will tell all of you. Just wait.

시아버지 : 모두에게 말해줄테니까 잠깐만 기다려보려무나..

Woman: Here father. (Man: Is it clean?) Woman: Yes, of course.

며느리 : 여기있어요..아버님 (시아버지 : 이거 깨끗한거 맞지? ) 며느리 : 물론이죠

Man: Then do as I tell you. Fold the sari into eight folds.

시아버지 : 자, 내가 시키는 대로 하렴. 사리를 여덟번 접거라.

Woman: All right, father.

며느리 : 알겠어요..아버님.

Man: And you, you count that she does it right. (Boy: All right, grand-dad.)

시아버지 : 그리고 넌 엄마가 똑바로 접는지 숫자를 세거라. ( 손자 : 알겠습니다. 할아버지.. )

Man: One, two, three, four folds we make.

시아버지 : 한번 두번 세번 네번 접네.

All the germs from the water we take.

우리가 마시는 물속 모든 세균들.

I think it's safe to say that all of us here

모든 사람들이 급증하는 일상적인 폭력에 대해

are deeply concerned about the escalating violence in our daily lives.

심각하게 걱정한다고 해도 과언이 아닐것입니다.

While universities are trying to devise courses in conflict resolution,

대학은 충돌 해결책에 관한 강좌를 개설하고,

and governments are trying to stop skirmishes at borders,

정부는 국경지역의 작은 마찰을 막으려 노력하고있지만

we are surrounded by violence, whether it's road rage,

우리는 여전히 폭력에 둘러싸여 있습니다. 운전자 폭행이라든지,

or whether it's domestic violence,

가정폭력이라든지,

whether it's a teacher beating up a student and killing her

숙제안해왔다고 학생을 때려 죽이는 선생님이라든지

because she hasn't done her homework, it's everywhere.

폭력은 어디에나 자리합니다.

So, why are we not doing something

그럼 왜 우리는 일상에서

to actually attend that problem on a day to day basis?

폭력문제에 주의를 기울이지 않는걸까요?

What are we doing to try and make children

우리는 어떤 일을 하고 있을까요?

and young people realize

어린이와 젊은이들이

that violence is something that we indulge in,

폭력은 빠져 들기 쉬운 것임을 알고,

that we can stop,

폭력을 멈추고

and that there are other ways of actually

폭력, 분노, 절망감을 타인을 해치지 않는 무언가로

taking violence, taking anger, taking frustrations

전환시키는 다른 방법이 있다는 사실을

into different things that do not harm other people.

깨우치도록 하기 위해서 말이죠.

Well, here is one such way.

자, 여기 한가지 방법이 있습니다.

And as for outsiders, white, black or brown,

It's that little gene. It's small and it's mean.

A few years ago we had a film called Rang De Basanti,

which suddenly spawned thousands of young people

soap operas has a heroine called Crystal.

And when, onscreen, Crystal got breast cancer,

크리스탈이 유방암에 걸리는 내용이 방영된 뒤로,

75,000 more young women went to have mammographies done.

75,000명 이상의 젊은 여성들이 유방조영술 검사를 받기도 했습니다.

And of course, "The Vagina Monologues" we know about.

그리고 물론 '버자이너 모놀로그'라는 연극도 알려져 있죠.

And there are stand-up comics

그리고 인종문제나 민족문제를 다루는

who are talking about racial issues, about ethnic issues.

스탠드 업 코미디언도 있습니다.

So, why is it,

그런데, 도대체 왜,

that if we think that we all agree

더 나은 세상과

that we need a better world,

더 정의로운 세상이 필요하다고

we need a more just world,

우리 모두가 동의하면서도,

why is it that we are not using the one language

예술이라는 언어를 통해 장벽을 허물고

that has consistently showed us

사람들에게 다가갈 수 있다는 사실이

that we can break down barriers, that we can reach people?

끊임없이 증명되고 있는데도, 왜 이 언어를 활용하지 않는걸까요?

What I need to say to the planners of the world,

세상의 정책자, 정부, 전략가에게

the governments, the strategists

제가 꼭 해야 될 말은 바로 이것입니다.

is, "You have treated the arts as the cherry on the cake.

"당신들은 예술을 무슨 빵의 장식 정도로 취급하지만,

It needs to be the yeast."

예술은 빵을 만드는 주재료가 되야만 합니다."

Because, any future planning,

왜냐하면, 2048년을 대비해서

if 2048 is when we want to get there,

어떤 미래를 계획하더라도,

unless the arts are put with the scientists,

과학자, 경제학자, 미래를 준비하는

with the economists,

모든 이들이

with all those who prepare for the future, badly,

예술과 함께하지 않는 한, 애석하게도

we're not going to get there.

우리는 2048년에 도달하지 못할것입니다.

And unless this is actually internalized, it won't happen.

So, what is it that we require? What is it that we need?

We need to break down our vision

of what the correct way of a path is.

And to say all these years of trying

to make a better world, and we have failed.

There are more people being raped. There are more wars.

So, something has got to give. And that is what I want.

Once there was a princess who whistled beautifully.

옛날에 아름답게 휘파람을 부는 공주가 있었습니다.

Her father the king said, "Don't whistle."

그녀의 아버지인 왕이 말했습니다. " 휘파람을 불지 말거라"

Her mother the queen said, "Hai, don't whistle."

그녀의 어머니인 왕비가 말했습니다. 딸아. 휘파람을 불지 말거라"

But the princess continued whistling.

그러나 공주는 계속 휘파람을 불었습니다.

The years went by and the princess grew up

세월이 흘러 공주가 자라

into a beautiful young woman,

아름다운 여성이 되자,

who whistled even more beautifully.

더 아름답게 휘파람을 불었습니다.

(Whistling)

Her father the king said, "Who will marry a whistling princess?"

그녀의 아버지인 왕이 말했습니다. "누가 휘파람부는 공주랑 결혼을 하겠느냐?"

Her mother the queen said, "Who will marry a whistling princess?"

그녀의 어머니인 왕비가 말했습니다. "누가 휘파람부는 공주랑 결혼을 하겠니?"

But the king had an idea.

그러나 왕에게 아이디어가 있었습니다.

He announced a Swayamvara.

왕은 '스와얌바라'라는 배우자선택권을 공포했습니다.

He invited all the princes to come and defeat his daughter at whistling.

왕자들을 초대해서, 휘파람으로 공주를 이기도록 할 생각이었습니다.

"Whoever defeats my daughter shall have half my kingdom

"내 딸보다 휘파람을 잘부는 자는 나의 왕국의 반을 차지할것이며,

and her hand in marriage!"

내딸과 결혼할것이다!"

Soon the palace filled with princes whistling.

곧 궁전은 휘파람부는 왕자들로 가득찼습니다.

(Whistling)

(휘파람불기)

Some whistled badly.

몇몇 사람은 휘파람을 잘 못 불었고

Some whistled well.

몇몇 사람은 휘파람을 잘 불었죠.

But nobody could defeat the princess.

그러나 아무도 공주보다 휘파람을 잘 불진 못했습니다.

"Now what shall we do?" said the king.

"이제 어떻게 해야한단 말인가?" 왕이 말했습니다.

"Now what shall we do?" said the queen.

"이제 어떻게 하죠?" 왕비가 말했습니다.

But the princess said, "Father, Mother, don't worry.

그러나 공주는 말했습니다. " 아버지, 어머니, 걱정하지 마세요."

I have an idea. I am going to go to each of these young men

저한테 다 생각이 있어요. 제가 모든 왕자님께 가서

and I am going to ask them

정말 저를 이겼다고 생각하는지

if they defeated correctly.

물어볼 꺼예요.

And if somebody answers, that shall be my wish."

그리고 정답을 말하는 사람이 있다면, 바로 제가 바라던 사람이 될꺼예요."

So she went up to each and said, "Do you accept that I have defeated you?"

공주는 모든 왕자님한테 가서 물었습니다. "제가 당신을 이겼다고 인정하시나요?"

And they said, "Me? Defeated by a woman?

그러자 그들이 말했죠, "제가요? 여자한테 졌다고요?

No way, that's impossible! No no no no no! That's not possible."

절대 아니죠..그건 불가능해요! 아니 아니 아니 아니! 그건 불가능해요."

Till finally one prince said,

마침내 어떤 왕자가 말했습니다,

"Princess, I accept, you have defeated me."

"공주여...인정합니다. 당신이 이겼어요."

"Uh-huh ..." she said.

"어-험..."공주가 말했습니다.

"Father, mother, this man shall be my wife."

"아버지,어머니, 이 남자가 바로 제 아내가 될사람이랍니다."

(Whistling)

(휘파람불기)
