I'm going to say that every single one of us in this room

made drawings when we were little.

Yes?

Yes? OK.

大人がやって来て 肩越しにその絵を見て

And maybe around the age of like, four or five or something like that,

「それは何かな？」と聞き

「顔だよ」とあなたが答えると

大人は言うのです

you might have been drawing,

and a grown-up came over and looked over your shoulder and said,

「顔っていうのは そんなじゃなくて

"What's that?"

こういうものだよ」

And you said, "It's a face."

そして こんな風に描きはじめます

丸に ２つのアーモンドの目に

And they said,

"That's not really what a face looks like.

７を逆さにしたようなものを 真ん中につけて

This is what a face looks like."

And they proceeded to draw this.

弧を描いたらできあがり

Circle, two almonds for some eyes,

this upside-down seven situation we have here,

and then a curved line.

But guess what?

This doesn't really look that much like a face, OK?

It's an icon.

It's visual shorthand,

and it's how we look at so much of our world today.

See, we have so much information coming at us all the time,

that our brains literally can't process it,

and we fill in the world with patterns.

Much of what we see is our own expectations.

All right.

I'm going to show you a little trick

to rewire your brain into looking again.

開封する時が来ましたので 取り出してください

Did you all get an envelope that says "do not open" on it?

Grab that envelope, it's time to open it.

中身を取り出したら

隣のどなたかと向き合ってください

Inside should be a piece of paper and a pencil.

できれば 知らない方同士がいいです

Once you have that all prepped,

ええ やるんですよ

please turn to somebody next to you.

やりますからね

Ideally, somebody you don't know.

Yeah, we're doing this, people,

Everybody find a partner?

OK, now look back at me.

絵を上手に描こう というのではありません

You are going to draw each other, OK?

それは目的ではありません

ここで大事なのは見ることです

みんな下手なんだから ご心配なく

No, no, no, no, wait, wait, wait, wait.

I promise this is not about doing a good drawing, OK?

２つの簡単なルールで お互いの顔を描いてもらいます

That's not what we're doing here,

１つ目は 決して鉛筆を 紙から離さないこと

we're looking, this is about looking.

Everybody's going to be terrible, I promise, don't worry.

途切れない１本の線です

いえいえ ご心配なく

You're going to draw each other with two very simple rules.

見ることがポイントなんです

One, you are never going to lift your pencil up off the paper.

紙から鉛筆を離さず 一本線で

２つ目は

One continuous line.

描いている途中で決して 視線を紙に落とさないこと

No, no, trust me here.

This is about looking, OK?

So one continuous line never lift the pencil.

見ることが目的ですから

Number two,

描く対象となる相手を 見つめ続けてください

never, ever, ever look down at the paper you're drawing on, OK?

それでは 紙の中心に 鉛筆の先を置いてください

Yes, it's about looking.

相手の顔を見て

So keep looking at the person you're drawing.

片方の目の中心を見てください

左右どちらでもいいです

Now put your pencil down in the middle of the paper, OK?

そこから描き始めます

準備はいいですか

深呼吸して

Look up at your partner.

（息を吸う）

Look at the inside of one of their eyes.

では はじめ

Doesn't matter which one.

ひたすら描けばいいのですが 位置は把握していてください

That's where you're going to start.

Ready?

スタート地点からしばらくすると 角にあたりますね

Deep breath.

(Inhales)

凹みもあるかもしれませんし

And begin.

細い線や まつ毛もありますよね

Now, just draw but notice where you are,

マスクの有無については 臨機応変に描いてください

you're starting there and you see there is a corner,

ゆっくり描いてください

maybe there's a curve there.

注意深く見て 目にしたままを描いてください

Notice those little lines, the eyelashes.

紙に視線を落とさず

People are wearing masks, some aren't, just work with that.

ひたすら描き続けてください

Now just go slow.

Pay attention and draw what you see.

残り５秒です

And don't look down.

Just keep going.

Look down at your beautiful drawings.

Can you guys hold them up?

Hold up, everybody.

Oh my gosh.

Are you kidding me?

You all are amazing.

OK, you can put your drawings back down,

なぜ素晴らしいかって？

tuck them under,

皆さんが ただ見たままに

put them on the paper.

顔を描いたからです

That was wonderful.

顔はこういうものとの思い込みで 描いたのではありません

I mean, they're all terrible, but they're wonderful.

Why are they wonderful?

それに皆さんは 人が滅多にしないことをしたんです

Because you all just drew a face.

You drew what you saw.

皆さんは 相手の方と 恥ずかしがらず親密に

You didn't draw what you think a face looks like, right?

目を合わせて向き合う ということを

You also just did something that people rarely do.

１分近くもしたのです

You just made intimate eye-to-eye,

絵を描くことを通し じっくり時間を取って

face-to-face contact with someone without shying away

注意を向け

相手のことをよく見て

for almost a minute.

相手にも同様に 自分をよく見ることを許したのです

Through drawing, you slowed down,

you paid attention,

よくできました

私は こんな風に絵を描くことによって 瞬時に関係を築けることを発見しました

you looked closely at someone

and you let them look closely at you.

他の方法ではできないことです

Good job.

さて

I have found that drawing like this

私の肩書は イラストレーターであり グラフィックジャーナリストです

creates an immediate connection like nothing else.

絵を描き 物語を伝えます

Alright.

人々と共に時を過ごし その間相手を見て 耳を傾けます

So I call myself an illustrator and a graphic journalist.

そして 相手の話をまとめて

ほぼ忠実に描いた絵と合わせて 記事にします

I draw, I tell stories.

皆さんがしたように 描くわけです

I spend time with people looking and listening.

And I take the words of the people that I speak with

こうして絵を描くことには 写真では得られない

and I put it together with drawings that I do, mostly from life,

多くの利点があることに 私は気づきました

just like you all just did.

誰かにカメラを向けられたら 皆さんはどう感じますか

I found that drawing like this does a lot of things

that photography can't do.

So when somebody points a camera at you, how do you feel?

A little objectified, right?

When I'm drawing, I hold my sketchbook low

近寄ってきて

and it keeps an open channel between me and the person I'm drawing.

A lot of time somebody will see me drawing and they'll get curious.

少し前のことです

They'll come over to me,

公立図書館が お年寄りに対して

and a real, authentic conversation begins.

どんな役割を果たしているのか 絵で物語りたいと思いました

Let me give you an example.

So a while back,

I wanted to do a drawn story

けれども 数日間 スケッチパッド片手に館内をウロウロして

about how the public library serves our elders.

年配の方の肩越しに 何を読んでいるのか尋ねてみても

なかなか これというものが 見つかりませんでした

But after spending a few days kind of lurking around with a sketch pad,

そんな時 出会ったのがリアでした

looking over older folks' shoulders and asking them what they were reading,

リアは 図書館で活動する 米国初の そして当時は唯一の

I wasn't really getting the story.

Until I stumbled upon Leah.

常勤のソーシャルワーカーでした

Leah is the first, and at the time was the only, full-time social worker

後でわかったのですが 公立図書館は 確かに高齢者の役に立っていますが

そこはまた市町村の 社会福祉事業の中心地でもあったのです

dedicated to a library in the nation.

Turns out, public library definitely serves our elders.

この男性はチャールズです

リアと一緒に

住むところのない人たちを対象に

It is also a social service epicenter of a city.

図書館内で 支援活動を行っています

彼の案内により

This is Charles.

私はスケッチパッドを片手に 目にした全てを描きましたが

Charles works with Leah.

And he does outreach within the library to folks

見せてもらった図書館の光景は それまで見てきたものとは全く違っていました

who are experiencing homelessness.

And he took me around,

I carried my sketch pad and I was drawing everything I saw,

and he showed me a very different library than I'd previously seen.

So computers that I assumed were for checking-out books,

or, you know, looking at emails,

公衆トイレの洗面台は

路上生活者たちが洗濯したり 体を洗ったりするための場です

were in fact a lifeline for folks who are searching for jobs and housing.

図書館は 安全で静かな場所であり

The sinks in the public restroom,

they are a laundromat and showers for folks who are sleeping on the street.

誰でも入れて 情報収集や休息を取るといったことを

A library is a safe, quiet place

無料でできるところなのです

見るだろうと期待した姿を 追い求めるのを止めた瞬間に

where anybody can go and find resources

and rest for free.

全く新しく より豊かな真実が見えてきたのです

See, the moment I stopped looking for the story that I expected to see,

それは 私の絵のモデルになった 他のすべてにも当てはまります

an entirely new and richer truth was revealed.

私は さっきの皆さんの様に 実物を元に絵を描きます

I found this to be true with everything and everyone I've ever drawn.

そんなわけで 自分専用の走るスタジオを

おしゃれなホンダ・エレメントの 後部に作り

OK, so I draw from life, right, like you guys did.

お陰で いつでもどこへでも出掛けて いろんな人と話し

And so I built myself a mobile studio

そのカーゴスペースで 絵を描いたり眠ったりできます

in the back of a swanky Honda Element --

とても快適です

So that I could go anywhere,

ユタ州を車で移動しながら

talk to anyone at any time and then draw and paint and sleep in the back.

人々と話したり 絵を描いたり していたときのことです

道端にある手書きで 木製の看板が目に留まりました

It is very cozy.

I was on the road in Utah,

そこには「靴作り」とあり

drawing and talking to people,

立ち寄ることにしました

when I spotted on the side of the road a hand-painted wooden sign.

It said "Bootmaker."

I stopped.

A tall, white, handlebar mustached man wearing a cowboy shirt,

アホみたいに笑顔で 手をふっている姿です

opened the door and found me,

a sketchbook-carrying, jumpsuit-wearing, urban, lefty lesbian,

彼の背後の壁にかかった クーガーの剥製を見つけたとき

smiling like, waving like a dork.

ベジタリアンである私は この靴職人のドンについて

(Laughter)

どんな人間かもうわかったと 思いました

When I spotted the stuffed cougar on the wall behind him,

でも 中に入ってしまったので

ドンに ちょっと靴作りを 見せてくれるようお願いしました

this vegetarian thought she knew all she needed to know

about Don the bootmaker.

彼は承諾してくれ

But there we were.

結局 その日をずっと 共に過ごすことになりました

So I asked him if he'd just show me quickly a little bit about his craft.

私は工房にいるドンを描き

その間彼が話してくれたのは 愛する妻を突然亡くし

He agreed.

And we ended up spending the whole day together,

それはもう深い悲しみに くれていることや

as I drew out Don in his workshop,

and he told me about the sudden death of his beloved wife,

狩りをしに旅に出かける予定があって

息子と一緒に行くのが とても楽しみだということでした

about his deep, deep grief,

工房の工具にはすべて それぞれエピソードがあり

and about this hunting trip that he was planning,

彼はその話を 本当に興味と好奇心を もって聞く相手に話すのが

and so looking forward to taking with his son.

Every tool in that shop held a story.

嬉しくてたまらない様子でした

１日が終わる頃には

And he was so, so happy

ドンと私の互いを見る目が 大きく変わっていました

to share it with somebody who was genuinely curious and interested.

その時描いた絵は

By the end of the day,

Don and I looked very different to one another.

ドンの言葉を借りれば 「フェイクニュース紙」に載り

And this drawing,

which ended up in my visual column in the New York Times

現在は額縁に入れられ 彼の部屋に 狩りの戦利品とともに飾られています

or as Don likes to call it, the fake-news media --

(Laughter)

now hangs framed on the wall of his big game trophy room.

私が新たな物語を絵にしようと 準備に取りかかっていたところを

パンデミックが襲いました

(Applause)

他の多くの人と同様に 私も一夜にして 仕事を続けられなくなりました

So I was getting ready to start on a new drawn story

when the pandemic hit.

子どもたちに絵を教えたらどうかと 提案したのは私の母でした

And overnight I was, like so many people, just unable to do my job.

子どもたちは日常生活を奪われ

It was my own mother who suggested that I teach drawing to kids.

家にこもる生活が始まるし

親御さんも つかの間の休憩を 得られます

Kids who were about to lose their routines,

ソーシャルワーカーの勉強はしていても

be stuck at home,

子どもたちに教えた経験はありませんでした

and to help give parents a much needed short break.

サンフランシスコの学校が休校となる前夜に

Now I'm trained as a social worker,

インスタグラムに投稿して

but I'd never taught kids before.

「いっしょに描こう」という試みを 翌日から始める旨を発表しました

But the night before school closures in San Francisco,

I went on Instagram

朝の10時に

and announced that the next day we'd try something called DrawTogether.

私は自宅のスタジオの 仕事机につき

素敵な妻がアイフォンを構えて

「ライブ配信を開始」ボタンを タップしました

10 am.

I sat behind my drawing table in my home studio

100人も集まればいいと 思っていましたが

蓋を開ければ １万２千人も集まって

and my wonderful wife pointed an iPhone at me

and pressed "Go live."

みんな熱心に犬の絵を描きました

And what I thought would be 100 kids,

次の日は

ended up being 12,000.

１万４千人の子供が参加し

木の絵を描き

All eager to draw a dog.

先ほど皆さんがしたような お絵かきの練習をしました

The next day,

14,000 kids came

毎日５分 ５日間の予定でいましたが

and we drew a tree,

and that drawing exercise that you all just did.

結局１日30分

週５日の教室が

What was supposed to be five minutes for five days,

数か月続くことになりました

子どもたちとは 線や形について話し

ended up being 30 minutes a day,

遠近法のことや

five days a week,

光と影について学びました

for months.

でも 本当にしていたのは

And yeah, we talked about line and shape

世界的な大惨事を乗り切る術を 一緒に模索するということでした

and we learned about perspective

and light and shadow.

But what was really going on

was we were actively looking our way through a global catastrophe together.

それは絵を描くことで ゆとりが持てるからです

手を動かし続けることで

私たちの注意が

See, drawing slows us down.

普段なら見逃し 気づかずにいることにも 向けられます

It keeps our hands moving

研究によると 絵を描くという作業は

so we can pay attention to things

子どもたちが 心の傷も含む 感情の処理をするための

that we usually overlook or that we ignore.

最も効果的な方法の一つだそうです

Studies show that drawing is one of the most effective ways

絵を描くことが 難しい問題について 話す手助けをしてくれます

for kids to process their emotions,

「いっしょに描こう」でよく言っているのは 陳腐に聞こえても本当のことです

and that includes trauma.

It helps us talk about hard things.

「描くことは見ること

そして見ることは愛すること」

We say something in DrawTogether, it sounds hokey, but it is true.

子どもたちの支えになる 適切な環境を与えることができたなら

Drawing is looking

and looking is loving.

絵を描くことで 完璧主義や 失敗を恐れる気持ちからみんな開放され

If we can give kids the right supportive environment,

私たちのように苦しまずにすみます

特に先ほど一部の方に見られたような 絵を描きましょうと言われて

drawing helps them let go of perfectionism and fear of failure

うろたえたるようなことは なくなると思うんです

so that they, unlike you and me,

自分に対する厳しすぎる目を 捨てられれば

and especially those of us who might have freaked out just a wee bit

when I said earlier we were going to draw, right?

後々苦労して変えようとする 必要もなくなります

We can let go of these harder self-judgments

みんなが絵描きになることを 期待していはいませんが

so we don't have to undo them later in life.

私たちはみんな 子どもも大人も ここにいる皆さんも

OK, I don't expect you all to become drawers.

もっと上手く「見る」ことが できるようになると思うんです

But I do know that all of us, kids, grownups, everyone in this room,

なぜなら これは顔ではないからです

この絵のように パターンにはめた生き方をしていたら

we can all be better at looking.

身の回りの世界や人々の持つ 深みや詳細を

Because this is not a face.

And when we live like this drawing,

見落とすことになります

これが顔です

we miss out on all of the depth and detail of the world

これも顔です

and people around us.

これは まさに顔です

This is a face.

And this is a face.

これもみんな顔です

And that is such a face.

皆さんには ゆとりを持ち

(Laughs)

注意を払い しっかりと見てほしいのです

And these are faces.

きっと 世界やそこに住む人たちを 再び好きになると断言できます

And if you slow down, I promise,

pay attention and really look.

また この数年で起きた 色々な経験を経て

You will fall back in love with the world and everyone in it.

私たちは皆 互いのことや 自分自身を深く見つめ

そうやって見た本当のことについて 語り合う機会を

And after the past few years we've had,

I think we all desperately need a chance to look closely at one another

間違いなく必要としているはずです
