you might have been drawing,

and a grown-up came over and looked over your shoulder and said,

"What's that?"

얼굴은 이렇게 생겼단다.”

And you said, "It's a face."

그리고 어른은 이걸 그립니다.

동그라미에 아몬드 모양의 두 눈,

And they said,

"That's not really what a face looks like.

여기 거꾸로 놓여진 7 모양과

This is what a face looks like."

And they proceeded to draw this.

곡선 하나요.

Circle, two almonds for some eyes,

하지만 아시나요?

이건 얼굴을 그렇게 닮지 않았어요, 그렇죠?

this upside-down seven situation we have here,

이것은 아이콘이에요.

and then a curved line.

시각적인 속기법이죠.

그리고 이것은 우리가 오늘날 세상을 보는 방식이기도 합니다.

But guess what?

This doesn't really look that much like a face, OK?

우리에게는 언제나 엄청나게 많은 정보들이 밀려듭니다.

It's an icon.

It's visual shorthand,

and it's how we look at so much of our world today.

See, we have so much information coming at us all the time,

that our brains literally can't process it,

and we fill in the world with patterns.

Much of what we see is our own expectations.

I'm going to show you a little trick

to rewire your brain into looking again.

Did you all get an envelope that says "do not open" on it?

Grab that envelope, it's time to open it.

준비가 다 끝나면

옆에 앉은 분 쪽으로 돌아보세요.

Inside should be a piece of paper and a pencil.

여러분이 모르시는 분이라면 좋겠네요.

Once you have that all prepped,

네, 하시면 됩니다, 여러분.

please turn to somebody next to you.

우리 이거 할 거예요.

Ideally, somebody you don't know.

멋지군요.

짝을 다 찾으셨죠?

Yeah, we're doing this, people,

자, 이제 절 보세요.

Everybody find a partner?

OK, now look back at me.

You are going to draw each other, OK?

그런 게 아녜요.

이건 보는 것에 관한 거예요.

모두 다 못 그릴 거예요, 걱정하실 필요 없어요.

No, no, no, no, wait, wait, wait, wait.

I promise this is not about doing a good drawing, OK?

상대방을 그릴 때 두 가지 아주 간단한 규칙이 있습니다.

That's not what we're doing here,

첫째, 연필을 종이에서 절대 떼지 않는 겁니다.

we're looking, this is about looking.

Everybody's going to be terrible, I promise, don't worry.

하나의 선으로 이으세요.

아뇨, 아뇨, 절 믿으세요.

You're going to draw each other with two very simple rules.

이건 보는 것에 관한 거예요.

One, you are never going to lift your pencil up off the paper.

자, 그래서 연필을 떼지 않고 한 선으로 그리기.

두 번째,

One continuous line.

절대, 절대, 절대 그리고 있는 종이 바라보지 않기, 아시겠죠?

No, no, trust me here.

This is about looking, OK?

So one continuous line never lift the pencil.

Number two,

never, ever, ever look down at the paper you're drawing on, OK?

Yes, it's about looking.

So keep looking at the person you're drawing.

Now put your pencil down in the middle of the paper, OK?

Look at the inside of one of their eyes.

그리고 시작하세요.

Doesn't matter which one.

That's where you're going to start.

Ready?

거기서부터 시작해 그리다가 모서리가 있다는 걸 보실 거예요.

Deep breath.

(Inhales)

어쩌면 곡선이 있을지도 모르죠.

And begin.

그런 작은 선들, 속눈썹들을 봐 주세요.

Now, just draw but notice where you are,

어떤 분들은 마스크를 쓰고 있고 아닌 분도 계시죠, 그대로 진행합니다.

you're starting there and you see there is a corner,

자, 천천히 하세요.

maybe there's a curve there.

주의를 기울여서 보이는 걸 그리세요.

Notice those little lines, the eyelashes.

아래 종이는 보지 말고요.

People are wearing masks, some aren't, just work with that.

계속 그리세요.

Now just go slow.

(중얼거림)

Pay attention and draw what you see.

5초만 더 그릴게요.

그리고 그만.

And don't look down.

Just keep going.

여러분의 예쁜 그림을 내려다 보세요.

And just five more seconds.

OK, you can put your drawings back down,

That was wonderful.

I mean, they're all terrible, but they're wonderful.

Why are they wonderful?

여러분은 지금 사람들이 별로 하지 않는 일도 했습니다.

Because you all just drew a face.

You drew what you saw.

친근하게 눈과 눈을 맞추셨죠.

You didn't draw what you think a face looks like, right?

시선을 돌리지 않고 서로 얼굴을 마주 하셨어요.

You also just did something that people rarely do.

거의 1분간을요.

You just made intimate eye-to-eye,

그리는 동안 속도를 늦추고

face-to-face contact with someone without shying away

주의를 기울였지요.

누군가를 자세히 봤고,

for almost a minute.

그 사람이 여러분을 자세히 보게 두었습니다.

Through drawing, you slowed down,

you paid attention,

you looked closely at someone

and you let them look closely at you.

I have found that drawing like this

저는 스스로를 일러스트레이터이자 그래픽 저널리스트로 소개합니다.

creates an immediate connection like nothing else.

그림을 그리고, 이야기를 전하죠.

Alright.

전 관찰하고 귀 기울이면서 사람들과 시간을 보냅니다.

So I call myself an illustrator and a graphic journalist.

저와 대화한 사람들의 말을 가져와 제가 그리는 그림과 합치죠.

그림은 대부분 삶을 주제로 해요.

I draw, I tell stories.

여러분들이 방금 그린 것처럼요.

I spend time with people looking and listening.

And I take the words of the people that I speak with

전 이런 그림이 사진은 할 수 없는 많은 일을 한다는 걸 알게 되었습니다.

and I put it together with drawings that I do, mostly from life,

just like you all just did.

누군가 여러분께 카메라를 향한다면 어떻게 느끼실 것 같아요?

I found that drawing like this does a lot of things

약간 객체가 된 느낌이죠?

that photography can't do.

그래서 저는 그림을 그릴 때 스케치북을 낮게 두고

저와 제가 그리는 상대방 사이의 공간을 열어둡니다.

So when somebody points a camera at you, how do you feel?

A little objectified, right?

제가 그림 그리는 걸 본 사람들은 궁금해하며 제게 다가오죠.

When I'm drawing, I hold my sketchbook low

그리고 진정한, 진짜 대화가 시작됩니다.

and it keeps an open channel between me and the person I'm drawing.

예를 보여드릴게요.

A lot of time somebody will see me drawing and they'll get curious.

예전 일인데요.

They'll come over to me,

그때 제가 그림으로 이야기하고 싶었던 건

and a real, authentic conversation begins.

노년층이 어떻게 공공도서관을 이용하는지에 대한 것이었습니다.

Let me give you an example.

So a while back,

I wanted to do a drawn story

하지만 스케치북을 들고 며칠이나 얼쩡거리며

about how the public library serves our elders.

어르신분들 어깨 너머를 힐끗대고, 그분들께 뭘 읽는지 물어도

이야기를 짜낼 수가 없었어요.

But after spending a few days kind of lurking around with a sketch pad,

레아를 만나기 전까지는요.

looking over older folks' shoulders and asking them what they were reading,

레아는 이 나라 최초의, 그리고 당시로서는 유일했던

I wasn't really getting the story.

도서관 전담 전업 사회복지사였어요.

Until I stumbled upon Leah.

Leah is the first, and at the time was the only, full-time social worker

공공도서관은 확실히 노년층에게 서비스를 제공했고요.

공공도서관은 또한 도시에서 사회복지의 중심이었어요.

dedicated to a library in the nation.

Turns out, public library definitely serves our elders.

이분은 찰스입니다. 레아와 함께 일하고 있죠.

찰스는 도서관 안에서 지내는 노숙자들을 돕고 있습니다.

It is also a social service epicenter of a city.

전 스케치북을 들고 그를 따라다니며 보이는 걸 모두 그리고 있었죠.

This is Charles.

Charles works with Leah.

And he does outreach within the library to folks

찰스는 제가 보아온 것과 전혀 다른 도서관의 모습을 보여줬습니다.

who are experiencing homelessness.

And he took me around,

책을 반납하거나 메일을 보는 데 이용할 거라 생각했던 컴퓨터들은

I carried my sketch pad and I was drawing everything I saw,

and he showed me a very different library than I'd previously seen.

알고 보니, 직장과 집을 구하는 사람들의 구명줄이었죠.

So computers that I assumed were for checking-out books,

or, you know, looking at emails,

공공화장실의 개수대는

길에서 노숙하는 사람들이 빨래하거나 씻는 곳이었어요.

were in fact a lifeline for folks who are searching for jobs and housing.

도서관은 안전하고 조용한 장소였죠.

The sinks in the public restroom,

they are a laundromat and showers for folks who are sleeping on the street.

누구든 와서 필요한 걸 얻고 쉴 수 있는 곳이었어요.

A library is a safe, quiet place

아무 대가 없이요.

뭔가 원하던 이야기를 찾는 걸 그만두려던 순간

where anybody can go and find resources

and rest for free.

전혀 새롭고 보다 풍부한 진실이 드러났습니다.

See, the moment I stopped looking for the story that I expected to see,

이제껏 제가 그린 것 중 가장 진실된 모습과 인물들이었요.

an entirely new and richer truth was revealed.

좋아요, 저는 삶을 그립니다, 여러분이 그랬듯이요.

그래서 저는 큼직한 혼다 엘리먼트 차량 뒷자리에 이동식 작업실을 꾸몄어요.

I found this to be true with everything and everyone I've ever drawn.

OK, so I draw from life, right, like you guys did.

어디든 가서 어느 때든 누구와도 얘기할 수 있고,

And so I built myself a mobile studio

그걸 그림으로 그리고, 칠하고, 잠도 잘 수 있도록이요.

in the back of a swanky Honda Element --

아주 안락해요.

So that I could go anywhere,

사람들과 얘기하고 그림 그리면서 유타주로 향하는 길이었죠,

talk to anyone at any time and then draw and paint and sleep in the back.

전 길가에 손으로 칠한 나무 표지를 발견했습니다.

It is very cozy.

I was on the road in Utah,

“제화공“이라 쓰여 있었죠.

drawing and talking to people,

전 차를 세웠어요.

카우보이 셔츠를 입은, 키 크고, 8자 콧수염을 한 백인 남자가

when I spotted on the side of the road a hand-painted wooden sign.

It said "Bootmaker."

문을 열었고 절 발견했죠.

I stopped.

스케치북을 들고, 점프슈트를 입은 도시의 좌파 레즈비언이

A tall, white, handlebar mustached man wearing a cowboy shirt,

얼간이처럼 웃으며 손 흔드는 모습을요.

opened the door and found me,

(웃음)

a sketchbook-carrying, jumpsuit-wearing, urban, lefty lesbian,

그 남자 뒤의 벽에 박제된 퓨마를 발견했을 떄,

smiling like, waving like a dork.

저라는 채식주의자는 알 만하구먼이라는 생각을 했죠.

(Laughter)

이 돈이라는 제화공에 대해서요.

When I spotted the stuffed cougar on the wall behind him,

그렇지만 어쩌겠어요.

저는 그에게 손재주를 간단히 보여줄 수 있냐고 물었죠.

this vegetarian thought she knew all she needed to know

about Don the bootmaker.

돈은 허락했습니다.

But there we were.

우리는 그날 온종일 함께 시간을 보내게 되었어요.

So I asked him if he'd just show me quickly a little bit about his craft.

저는 작업실에 있는 돈을 그렸죠.

그는 제게 사랑하는 아내가 갑작스레 죽은 일에 대해 얘기했어요.

He agreed.

And we ended up spending the whole day together,

깊고 깊게 슬퍼하면서요.

as I drew out Don in his workshop,

and he told me about the sudden death of his beloved wife,

그가 계획 중인 사냥 여행에 관해 이야기하면서

아들과 함께 가기를 고대하고 있다고도 했죠.

about his deep, deep grief,

그 작업실의 모든 도구에는 얽힌 얘기가 있었어요.

and about this hunting trip that he was planning,

돈은 정말 정말 행복해 했어요.

and so looking forward to taking with his son.

진정 궁금해하고 관심을 보이는 사람과 그 이야기를 나눌 수 있어서요.

Every tool in that shop held a story.

그날이 끝날 무렵,

And he was so, so happy

돈과 저는 서로를 아주 다르게 보게 되었습니다.

to share it with somebody who was genuinely curious and interested.

그리고 이 그림,

이 그림은 저의 비주얼 칼럼으로 뉴욕 타임즈에 실리게 되었어요.

By the end of the day,

Don and I looked very different to one another.

돈이 가짜 뉴스 매체라고 부르곤 했던 바로 그곳인데요.

And this drawing,

which ended up in my visual column in the New York Times

지금은 그의 사냥감들이 걸린 트로피룸 벽 액자 속에 들어 있죠.

or as Don likes to call it, the fake-news media --

(Laughter)

now hangs framed on the wall of his big game trophy room.

코로나가 시작될 때 저는 새로운 그림 이야기를 시작하려 하고 있었어요.

(Laughter)

그런데 하룻밤 사이에 다른 사람들처럼 제 일을 하지 못하게 됐죠.

So I was getting ready to start on a new drawn story

when the pandemic hit.

그때 제 어머니께서 아이들에게 그림 가르치는 일을 제안하셨습니다.

And overnight I was, like so many people, just unable to do my job.

집에 갇혀 일상을 잃어버리게 생긴 아이들을 가르치는 일이요.

It was my own mother who suggested that I teach drawing to kids.

그 부모에게는 너무나 필요한 작은 휴식도 제공하고요.

Kids who were about to lose their routines,

사회복지사 자격은 있었지만 아이들을 가르쳐본 적은 없었어요.

be stuck at home,

and to help give parents a much needed short break.

샌프란시스코 지역에 휴교령이 있기 전날 밤,

Now I'm trained as a social worker,

전 인스타그램을 통해서

but I'd never taught kids before.

다음 날부터 ‘함께 그리기’라는 활동을 해볼 거라고 알렸죠.

But the night before school closures in San Francisco,

I went on Instagram

아침 10시.

and announced that the next day we'd try something called DrawTogether.

저는 저희 집 작업실의 그림 그리는 탁자에 앉아 있었어요.

제 멋진 아내는 아이폰을 제게 들이대고는

10 am.

“라이브 시작“을 눌렀죠.

I sat behind my drawing table in my home studio

100명 쯤 될 거라 생각했던 아이들은

12,000명이 되고 말았습니다.

and my wonderful wife pointed an iPhone at me

and pressed "Go live."

개를 그리려고 모두 안달했죠.

And what I thought would be 100 kids,

그 다음 날에는 14,000명의 애들이 왔어요.

ended up being 12,000.

우리는 나무를 그렸습니다.

All eager to draw a dog.

여러분이 아까 한 거랑 같은 그림 그리기도 했어요.

The next day,

14,000 kids came

5분씩 5일간 진행하기로 했던 활동은

and we drew a tree,

and that drawing exercise that you all just did.

하루에 30분씩

한 주에 5일간

What was supposed to be five minutes for five days,

여러 달 진행됐습니다.

네, 선이나 형태에 관한 얘기를 했고

ended up being 30 minutes a day,

원근법에 대해서도 배웠죠.

five days a week,

빛과 음영도요.

for months.

하지만 실제로 진행되고 있던 건

And yeah, we talked about line and shape

전 세계적 재난을 헤쳐 나갈 길을 우리가 함께 적극적으로 찾는 거였죠.

and we learned about perspective

and light and shadow.

But what was really going on

was we were actively looking our way through a global catastrophe together.

그림 그리기는 우리의 속도를 늦춥니다.

우리 손을 계속 움직이는 동안 대상에 주의를 기울일 수 있습니다.

See, drawing slows us down.

우리가 보통 간과하거나 무시하는 것들에요.

It keeps our hands moving

연구에 따르면 그림 그리기는 가장 효과적으로

so we can pay attention to things

that we usually overlook or that we ignore.

아이들이 자기 감정을 다스릴 수 있도록 해줍니다.

Studies show that drawing is one of the most effective ways

for kids to process their emotions,

and that includes trauma.

It helps us talk about hard things.

그림 그리기는 바라보는 것입니다.

바라보는 것은 사랑하는 것이고요.

We say something in DrawTogether, it sounds hokey, but it is true.

아이들에게 적절한 지원 환경을 만들어준다면,

Drawing is looking

and looking is loving.

그림 그리기는 아이들이 완벽주의와 실패에 대한 두려움을 잊도록 돕습니다.

If we can give kids the right supportive environment,

저나 여러분과 달리,

특히 그림 그리기를 할 거라 할 때 약간 기겁했던 분들이라면

drawing helps them let go of perfectionism and fear of failure

so that they, unlike you and me,

엄격한 자기 평가로부터 자유로워질 수 있어요.

and especially those of us who might have freaked out just a wee bit

when I said earlier we were going to draw, right?

실수를 되돌리려고 애쓸 필요가 없게 되겠죠.

We can let go of these harder self-judgments

여러분 모두가 화가가 될 거라 생각하지는 않습니다.

so we don't have to undo them later in life.

하지만 확신하건대

우리 모두, 아이, 어른, 이곳에 있는 여러분 모두가

OK, I don't expect you all to become drawers.

더 잘 볼 수 있게 될 것입니다.

But I do know that all of us, kids, grownups, everyone in this room,

이것은 얼굴이 아니니까요.

우리가 이 그림처럼 산다면

we can all be better at looking.

세상을 속속들이 깊이 보지 못하고 주변 사람들을 놓치는 것입니다.

Because this is not a face.

And when we live like this drawing,

이런 것이 얼굴입니다.

we miss out on all of the depth and detail of the world

이런 것이요.

and people around us.

이거야말로 얼굴이군요.

(웃음)

This is a face.

And this is a face.

그리고 이런 것들이 얼굴이죠.

And that is such a face.

속도를 늦춘다면,

(Laughs)

주의를 기울이고 유심히 본다면,

And these are faces.

이 세상과 그 안의 모든 사람과 다시 사랑에 빠질 겁니다.

And if you slow down, I promise,

pay attention and really look.

우리가 보낸 지난 몇 년간을 생각하면

우리에게 절실히 필요한 것은

You will fall back in love with the world and everyone in it.

서로를, 우리 자신을 유심히 볼 기회입니다.

And after the past few years we've had,

I think we all desperately need a chance to look closely at one another

우리가 무엇을 보는지에 관한 진실을 얘기할 기회가 필요합니다.
