This day, with hindsight, which is a wonderful gift,

Pete seemed happier than usual.

I was painting a house down the end of Pete's street

Pete, like myself, was a tradie, or a tradesman.

We do like to shorten things in the Australian vernacular.

オーストラリア人は 縮めて言うのが好きなもんで

A tradie.

tradie つまり熟練工だ

There was an expectation as a tradie.

熟練工に対しては 周りの期待があった

You're expected to be stoic.

ストイックなはず

You're expected to be strong,

強いはず

robust, macho.

頑丈で 男らしいはず

You're expected to be tough physically

タフだし

and silent in the face of adversity.

逆境でも何も言わないはず

There is a pronounced ripple effect

コミュニティで 仲間の誰かが自殺で亡くなると

when someone suicides in your community.

Pete's funeral was in July. It was winter.

ピートの葬儀は７月だった 冬だ

The mood was bleak and somber

寒々として 陰うつな空気が

in the packed community hall.

込み合った公民館に漂ってた

It was a grieving community

みんな悲しんでた

who had no answers

ピートの自殺について

to Pete's suicide,

何も言えることがなかった

no answers at all.

全く何もだ

As I wandered around between the tradies and the community members,

熟練工の奴らや地域の人たちの間で うろうろしていた俺は

I started hearing some tones of another underlying tragic level.

I heard people talking in that community hall

about the struggles other people were going through.

The essence of the conversations was contained in two words

that I heard several times:

That was the epiphany.

That was the moment where I was standing in a community hall

in a place where this Castlemaine community

ここキャッスルメインの人たちは

had given me such support for 20 years,

20年間にわたって 俺を支えてくれていた

this community had backed my work, I'd played footy there,

俺の仕事を支えてくれたし ここでサッカーもしたし

I'd done theater there,

演劇もしたし

I was so grateful for what they'd given me.

But I was standing there in that space,

でも俺はあの場にただ立って

and I was looking around that hall as well,

and I could tell people in that hall

who were struggling with alcohol, drugs, finance, gambling,

Yet because of my tradie culture

and that ignorant attitude that we have in the tradie community,

I didn't feel confident at all.

I didn't have the tools. I lacked the experience.

I didn't know what to do, but I wanted to do something.

何をすべきかも分からなかったが でも何かしたかった

I left the wake.

俺は通夜から戻って

I hugged a few tradie mates and said,

"Please come and see me if you need to."

「必要なときは 俺のところに来いよ」

But I didn't know what to say to them or what to tell them.

でも何を言うべきか 何を伝えるべきか 分からない

I had no idea.

全く思い浮かばなかった

２週間後 キャサリン・ピルグリムの電話で 俺たちは一緒に団体を立ち上げることになる

I got a phone call two weeks later from Catherine Pilgrim, my cofounder,

wanting to do something for the family.

We talked for a while and I said,

let's do something for the tradie community.

We love our town, we're grateful,

So we talked a bit more.

What could we do?

An awareness-raising event. Awesome.

We're talking about tradies.

How do you get tradies somewhere?

Can you get them to a hospital? No.

To a community health center? No.

There's an ingrained culture of being a tradie.

熟練工の文化ってのは根深いんだ

I thought, where is the perfect place we can get the tradies together

俺は考えた 熟練工を集める最高の場所は？

where they feel socially included

社会の一員だと感じられて

and they feel comfortable

居心地が良くて

and they can share, they can open up and talk about mental health

心の健康について 誰かに話せる 口に出せる場だ

in the building industry?

それも建設業の連中がだ

Where can we have an event?

A hardware store.

(Laughter)

Yeah, that's what I thought too. I thought it was very clever.

More precisely, the timber yard of a hardware store.

So there we were. OK, we've got the venue.

さあ会場は決まった

What else do we need?

他に何が要るかな？

What else do tradies love?

熟練工の奴らが好きなものは 他に何がある？

Food.

食い物だ

I know, we all do, but tradies love food.

みんなそうだけど 熟練工は食い物に目がない

Tradies especially, and I'm a tradie myself,

熟練工って奴は特に 俺自身 その１人だけど

we love egg and bacon rolls.

卵とベーコンのバーガーが大好物

So we thought we'd supply the tradies with egg and bacon rolls,

and there was the slogan:

It's a bit corny, but it sort of works.

And we also came up with a logo.

Keep in mind, "HALT," our charity, had no money to begin,

We had conversations.

This is a community issue. It starts in community.

So we went around to the butcher, we went around to the baker,

there was no candlestick maker,

みんな協力してくれた あの童謡みたいだろ？

there was an egg place and there was some chocolate,

there was coffee, there was fruit,

それにコーヒーとフルーツも

but we went around and said,

"Hey, we're doing this awareness-raising event.

「あのさ 俺たち啓発イベントやるんだ

Do you want to contribute? Because we haven't got any money."

協力してくれないか？ 金がなくってさ」

Of course, nearly every person we initiated the conversation with

もちろん 俺たちが話を持ちかけた ほとんど全員が

knew someone that had anxiety, depression or thoughts of suicide

不安 うつ 自殺したい気持ち そういうのを抱えた誰かを知っていた

or had suicided.

自殺で亡くなった人のことも

There was that unity,

そんな結束があった

that whole of community approach.

So we thought, that's great, we've got some food.

それで俺たちは考えた よし 食い物は用意した

What else do we need?

他に何が要る？

We need the support services there.

支援サービスが必要だ

A lot of tradies, and a lot of men in general,

熟練工もだが 男ってのは大抵

don't necessarily know where to go and get help.

どこに行けば助けてもらえるか きちんと知ってるわけじゃない

I myself was one of them,

俺自身 そういう１人で

and this is what I talk about at the HALT events,

これは俺がHALTのイベントで 言ってることだが

that four years ago when I founded HALT,

HALTを創立した４年前

I didn't know I could go to the doctor about my mental health

俺は 心の不調について医者にかかれば 治療計画を立ててもらえるなんて

and get a mental health plan.

知らなかったんだ

I didn't know about community health.

地域の健康施策を知らなかった

I certainly didn't know about Lifeline,

Lifeline（自殺予防ホットライン）も 全く知らなかった

and I've called Lifeline three times,

それから電話すること３回

and they've certainly potentially saved my life.

俺が生きてるのは そのおかげに違いない

I had to learn all these things.

こういうのを全て 学ばなきゃならなかった

Tradies need to know them.

熟練工は知っとく必要がある

We provided bags,

俺は情報を袋詰めにして

bags of information,

それを配ったら

and I had quite a few tradies say to me in the first year,

初年度には たくさんの熟練工から こう言われたよ

"Aw, this is a load of you-know-what,"

「ああ 例のアレだろ」

but those tradies I know still have those bags in their Ute

でも俺は知ってる あの情報バッグを 車の中や

or in their shed.

自分の小屋に置いている奴がいる

On November 10, 2013,

2013年 11月10日

we had our event,

俺たちはイベントを開催したが

and interestingly enough, when I talk about a whole of community approach,

面白かったのは 地域全体でのアプローチを話したときだ

that was our first event in Castlemaine at Tonks Brothers,

キャッスルメインの工具店で 俺たちの初イベントをやったが

and there's a whole of community there.

そこには地域の あらゆる人が集まっていた

There's counselors,

カウンセラーも

there's people who have gone through mental health.

心の病を克服した人たちもいた

That first event set the scene.

その初イベントが 後の流れを作った

Since then, we've had more events.

以来 俺たちはさらに イベントをしてきた

Interestingly enough, it's not only tradies

面白いんだが 熟練工だけが

that are affected by mental health or anxiety or depression or suicide.

心の病とか 不安やうつ 自殺に 影響されるわけじゃないんだ

We started working with TAFEs.

俺たちは TAFE（専門学校）と 一緒に活動を始めた

We started working in the farming industry,

農業に従事する人たちとも 活動を始めたし

at councils, at secondary colleges.

議会や 高校でもやった

We did events for the partners of tradies,

熟練工のパートナー向けの イベントもやった

because often the tradies would not go home to their partners

何でかというと 熟練工って奴は 家に帰ってパートナーに

and say, "Guess what, we talked about mental health,

「じつは 心の健康の話をしてきたんだ

and we're going to do this, this and this now."

今後はああして こうして」 なんて言わないからだ

So we're doing events for the partners,

だからパートナー向けの イベントもやった

who themselves may need help.

パートナーたちも 助けが 必要かもしれないからだ

TAFEs are very popular.

TAFEは広く知られている

For me, it's really crucial to get to these young, vulnerable men and women.

傷つきやすい若者と会うのは 俺にはとても重要なんだ

We've done events for men's sheds,

men's sheds（男性の健康を 促す組織）のイベントもした

so the high rate of suicide is really high for older men.

自殺死亡率が高いのは 年配の男性なんだ

We've done events for council depot workers and tradies.

議会倉庫で働く人や 熟練工のイベントもした

Interestingly enough,

面白かったのは

nearly every single event --

イベントをやるたび ほぼいつも ―

and we've actually done now, with very little funding,

今までのところ 資金ほとんどなしで

150 events over four states.

So -- oh please, thank you.

And invariably at every single HALT event at a hardware store,

I have one tradie come up to me,

at least one come up and tell me about his suicide attempt.

They're not suicidal there and then, they've worked through it,

その時には自殺したい気持ちはなくて もう乗り越えているんだが

but these men have never felt they could share their vulnerabilities.

奴らは自分たちの弱さを 誰かに話せるなんて思ってなかったんだ

They've never felt they can talk about their suicide attempt,

自殺しようとしたなんて 誰にも話せないと思ってるが

but the HALT events,

HALTのイベントは

where there's no expectations for them to talk,

参加者が話してくれることを期待して やってるわけじゃない

makes them feel comfortable to start talking.

でも奴らには居心地が良いみたいで 自分から話をし始めるんだ

And it's not just they talk to me and tell me their story,

俺に自分の物語を 話してくれるだけじゃなく

they actually now say,

こんなことも言うんだ

"We feel comfortable enough to talk with other men."

「居心地良いから 他の奴らと話したいな」

I've had men stand up and say,

立ち上がってこう言った奴もいた

"I've never mentioned before that I've had depression, but I have,

「初めて言うんだけど 俺 うつなんだ

and if anyone else here wants to come and speak to me,

もし俺と話したい奴がいたら

I'm here to talk to you."

話を聴くよ」

It's very empowering and cathartic to do that.

これは勇気づけられる体験だし 気持ちがスカッとする

We need a whole-of-community approach.

必要なのは コミュニティ全体でのアプローチだ

We give the tradies bags of information from local and national support services.

俺たちは地域や国の支援サービスの情報を 袋詰めにして 熟練工の奴らに渡した

It's one of thing to tell a tradie or someone at one of these events,

イベントで熟練工や参加者に 何か言うってのも １つのやり方だ

"You should go here, here and here,"

「どこそこに行くべきだ」って

but we need the whole of community

でも地域全体が

to wrap around the idea of suicide prevention.

自殺予防を中心において 考えることが必要なんだ

We need those services,

そういったサービスは必要だし

and suicide doesn't discriminate at all.

自殺は昼夜構わず いつだって起きる

It's not a 9-to-5 thing.

日中の時間にだけ 起こるわけじゃない

We need to do events before 9am, which most of our brekkies are,

朝９時より早いイベントが必要だ たいてい朝飯の時間だ

and after 5 PM.

それから夕方５時以降だな

That's what we need to do. It's a whole-of-community approach.

俺たちに必要なのはそれだ コミュニティ全体でのアプローチだ

We need to get into businesses.

企業に関わる必要がある

We need to get into sporting clubs, community clubs.

スポーツクラブや 地域のクラブにも 関わる必要がある

We need to get in there and train people

そこに関わって そこの人たちに 心の健康についての理解を

to understand about mental health.

訓練することが必要だ

Here's some sobering statistics just to give you an idea.

参考までに言うが 目の覚めるような統計がある

In 2016,

2016年に

in Australia, 2,866 suicides,

オーストラリアでは 2866人が自殺で亡くなっていて

very close to twice the road toll.

これは交通事故での死者の ２倍にほぼ匹敵する

Globally, 800,000 a year

世界中で見ると １年間に80万人が

suicides in the world,

one every 40 seconds.

We need a whole-of-community approach.

We need to feel comfortable in opening up the conversations.

Men I know find it really difficult to open up conversations.

語り合いを始めるのは 男にとってはとても難しいよな

They certainly do.

If you're going to open up conversations, I tell the guys,

もし語り合おうとするなら 俺はそいつらにも言うんだが

you need to find a comfortable place to open up and have a conversation,

それができる居心地の良い場を 見つけることが必要だ

whether it's at the pub, it's going for a walk,

パブでもいいし 散歩でもいい

it's after footy.

サッカーの後でもいい

Find that really comfortable place to have the conversation.

語り合うのに 本当に居心地が良い 場所を見つけるんだ

Part of the ability to have that conversation

そんな語り合いをするために 必要な能力のなかには

is to understand what to say.

「何を言うべきか知っている」 というのもある

We've all heard about, "Are you OK?"

よくあるのは「大丈夫か？」

And I've seen it. I've done this.

これは よく見るし 俺も言ったことがある

"Are you OK?" "Yes." "Are you OK?" "Yes."

「大丈夫か？」「ああ」 「大丈夫か？」「ああ」

"Are you OK?" "Yes." "Are you OK?" "No."

「大丈夫か？」「ああ」 「大丈夫か？」「いいや」

What do I say now?

さあ何て言う？

What do I say?

何て言う？

We need to equip every single person

ひとりひとりが

with the ability to come forth

語り合いの場に来て そんな言葉を交わせるよう

and be able to have that conversation.

働きかける必要がある

We need to be able to listen.

話を聴く力が必要だ

I don't know who out there is a good listener.

ここにいる中で 誰が上手な聴き手かは分からないが

I'm working on my listening abilities,

俺は聴く力をつけようと 頑張ってるところだ

but it's an art form to listen and not judge.

けど批判抜きで話を聴くのは アートの域だ

Don't make fun. If someone's coming to talk to you about mental illness

茶化しちゃだめだ もし誰かが心の病気や

and anxiety and depression and thoughts of suicide,

不安やうつ 自殺したいという思いを 話しに来たら

we need to respect that.

それを大事に扱う必要がある

They want to trust us that we're going to hold that in tight

話しに来た人は俺たちが 話の内容を大事に胸に収めて

and not tell everyone.

誰にも言わないと信じている

We need to do that.

そうする必要がある

So we need to have conversations. We need to listen.

語り合うことが必要 聴くことが必要

And we need to start reducing the stigma associated with mental health.

それに心の病に対する 社会の負のイメージを変える必要もある

Companies are now starting to have mental health days.

企業は「心の病気休暇制度」を 始めている

What a great idea.

なんていいアイデアだ

It's not just physical sick days, it's mental health days.

身体の具合だけじゃなく 心の具合が悪い日だってある

Things are changing. We can add to that change.

物事は変わり続けている 俺たちは その後押しもできるんだ

I'm a life preserver.

俺は命を守る人間だ

I think we can all be life preservers.

皆 命を守る人間になれる 俺はそう思う

The pain of regret

後悔の苦しみは

is far greater than the pain of hard work.

懸命に関わることの苦しみより はるかに大きい
