It's a powerful feeling, to get attention.

I'm an actor, so I'm a bit of an expert on, well, nothing, really.

But I do know what it feels like to get attention --

I've been lucky in my life

to get a lot more than my fair share of attention.

And I'm grateful for that,

because like I said, it's a powerful feeling.

But there's another powerful feeling

that I've also been lucky to experience a lot as an actor.

And it's funny, it's sort of the opposite feeling,

because it doesn't come from getting attention.

It comes from paying attention.

When I'm acting,

I get so focused that I'm only paying attention to one thing.

Like when I'm on set and we're about to shoot

and the first AD calls out "Rolling!"

And then I hear "speed," "marker," "set,"

and then the director calls "Action!"

I've heard that sequence so many times,

like, it's become this Pavlovian magic spell for me.

Something happens to me, I can't even help it.

My attention ...

narrows.

And everything else in the world,

世の中の他のことは全部 ―

anything else that might be bothering me or might grab my attention,

気になっていることや いつもなら気を取られてしまうことが

it all goes away, and I'm just ... there.

すべて消え去って ただ 自分がそこに在る

And that feeling, that is what I love,

その感覚こそが 私が愛してやまないもので

that, to me, is creativity.

それこそが創造性だと思います

And that's the biggest reason I'm so grateful that I get to be an actor.

役者をやっていて良かったと 思うのは そんな瞬間です

So, there's these two powerful feelings.

ですから 強力な感覚は ２つあります

There's getting attention and paying attention.

注目を集めること そして 注意を向けること

Of course, in the last decade or so,

もちろん 過去10年間で

new technology has allowed more and more people

新しいテクノロジーのおかげで より多くの人々が

to have this powerful feeling of getting attention.

注目を集めることが できるようになりました

For any kind of creative expression, not just acting.

It could be writing or photography or drawing, music -- everything.

文章や写真や ドローイングや音楽など 色々です

The channels of distribution have been democratized,

and that's a good thing.

But I do think there's an unintended consequence

でも 創造的でありたいと願う すべての人にとって

for anybody on the planet with an urge to be creative --

myself included, because I'm not immune to this.

I think that our creativity

is becoming more and more of a means to an end --

and that end is to get attention.

And so I feel compelled to speak up

because in my experience,

私の経験から言うと

the more I go after that powerful feeling of paying attention,

the happier I am.

But the more I go after the powerful feeling of getting attention,

the unhappier I am.

So this is something that goes way back for me.

この話は ずっと昔に さかのぼります

I think the first time I can remember using my acting to get attention,

I was eight years old at summer camp.

And I'd been going on auditions for about a year by then,

and I'd been lucky to get some small parts

in TV shows and commercials,

and I bragged about it a lot, that summer at camp.

And at first, it worked.

The other kids gave me a bunch of extra attention,

because I had been on "Family Ties."

Then, the tide turned --

I think I took it too far with the bragging.

And then, the other kids started to make fun of me.

I remember there was this one girl I had a crush on, Rocky.

ちょっと気になっていた ロッキーという女の子を覚えています

Her name was Rachel, she went by Rocky.

名前はレイチェルで 愛称がロッキーでした

And she was beautiful, and she could sing,

かわいくて 歌が上手くて

and I was smitten with her, and I was standing there, bragging.

彼女に夢中な私は 自慢ばかりしていました

And she turned to me and she called me a show-off.

彼女は私の方を向いて 「目立ちたがり屋」と言ったのです

Which I 100 percent deserved.

100％ その通りです

But you know, it still really hurt.

でも すごく傷付きました

And ever since that summer,

その夏以来

I've had a certain hesitance to seek attention for my acting.

役者であることで注目を集めるのを ためらうようになりました

Sometimes, people would ask me,

"Wait a minute, if you don't like the attention,

「待って 注目されたくないなら

then why are you an actor?"

なんで役者をやってるの？」

And I'd be like,

"Because that's not what acting's about, man, it's about the art."

And they'd be like, "OK, OK, dude."

すると「わかったよ」と

(Laughter)

And then Twitter came out.

そこに Twitter が登場しました

And I got totally hooked on it, just like everybody else,

他の人と同じように 私もすっかりハマりました

which made me into a complete hypocrite.

すっかり偽善者になったわけです

Because at that point,

だって その時には

I was absolutely using my acting to get attention.

役者であることを利用して 注目を集めていたんですから

I mean, what, did I think I was just getting all these followers

どう考えたって こんなに たくさんフォロワーがいるのは

because of my brilliant tweets?

気の利いたツイートの おかげなんかじゃない

I actually did think that -- I was like --

そう思ったこともありましたが―

(Laughter)

"They don't just like me because they saw me in 'Batman,'

「フォローされるのは 『バットマン』に出てたからじゃない

they like what I have to say, I've got a way with words."

発言が気に入られるからだ 僕が良いことを言うからさ」

(Laughter)

And then in no time at all,

それから まもなく

it started having an impact on my dearly beloved creative process.

私がこよなく愛する創作過程にも 影響するようになりました

It still does.

今もそうです

I try not to let it.

そうならないようにしますが

But you know, I'd be sitting there, like, reading a script.

座って 台本を読んでいるとします

And instead of thinking,

本来はこう考えるべきです

"How can I personally identify with this character?"

「どうしたら この役と 共通点を見いだせるか？」

Or "How is the audience going to relate to this story?"

「観客はこの物語を どう捉えるだろうか？」

I'm like, "What are people going to say about this movie on Twitter?"

そうではなく「この映画のことを Twitter でなんてつぶやこう？」

And "What will I say back

「なんて返信しようか？

that will be good and snarky enough to get a lot of retweets,

たくさんリツイートされるように 気が利いてて 適度に無愛想で

but not too harsh,

辛辣すぎないのがいいな

because people love to get offended, and I don't want to get canceled?"

みんな傷付きたくないし 仕事をキャンセルされたくないからね」

These are the thoughts that enter my mind

こんな考えがよぎります

when I'm supposed to be reading a script, trying to be an artist.

台本を読んで アーティストであろうとすべきなのに

And I'm not here to tell you

だからといって

that technology is the enemy of creativity.

テクノロジーが創造性の敵だ とは言いません

I don't think that.

そうは思いません

I think tech is just a tool.

テクノロジーはツールです

It has the potential to foster unprecedented human creativity.

かつてないほどに人間の創造性を 高めうる可能性があります

Like, I even started an online community called HITRECORD,

私だって HITRECORD という オンラインコミュニティを作りました

where people all over the world

世界中の人々が

collaborate on all kinds of creative projects,

様々なクリエイティブな企画で 協力できます

so I don't think that social media or smartphones or any technology

ですから ソーシャルメディアや スマホなどのテクノロジーそれ自体が

is problematic in and of itself.

問題だとは思いません

But ...

でも ...

if we're going to talk about the perils of creativity

創造性が 注目を集めるための手段に

becoming a means to get attention,

なってしまう危険性を 語るのであれば

then we have to talk about the attention-driven business model

現代の巨大ソーシャルメディア企業の 注目を集めたい衝動に基づいた―

of today's big social media companies, right?

ビジネスモデルについて 語らねばなりません

(Applause)

This will be familiar territory for some of you,

よく見知ったことだと 言う人もいるでしょうが

but it's a really relevant question here:

How does a social media platform

例えば Instagramのような

like, for example, Instagram, make money?

It's not selling a photo-sharing service --

that part's free.

So what is it selling?

It's selling attention.

「注目」を売ってるんです

It's selling the attention of its users to advertisers.

And there's a lot of discussion right now

about how much attention we're all giving to things like Instagram,

but my question is:

How is Instagram getting so much attention?

We get it for them.

Anytime somebody posts on Instagram,

they get a certain amount of attention from their followers,

And the more attention you're able to get,

So it's in Instagram's interest

for you to get as much attention as possible.

And so it trains you to want that attention,

to crave it, to feel stressed out when you're not getting enough of it.

Instagram gets its users addicted

Instagram は ユーザーを

to the powerful feeling of getting attention.

注目を集めるという 強力な感覚におぼれさせます

And I know we all joke, like, "Oh my God, I'm so addicted to my phone,"

よく冗談で言いますよね 「あーあ すっかりスマホ中毒だよ」って

but this is a real addiction.

でも これは本当に中毒なんです

There's a whole science to it.

If you're curious, I recommend the work of Jaron Lanier,

But here's what I can tell you.

Being addicted to getting attention

注目を集めることへの中毒は

is just like being addicted to anything else.

他のものの中毒になるのと 全く同じことです

It's never enough.

決して満たされません

You start out and you're thinking,

最初はこう思うかもしれません

"If only I had 1,000 followers, that would feel amazing."

「フォロワーが1,000人いたら 気分がいいだろうな」

But then you're like, "Well, once I get to 10,000 followers,"

でも そのうちに「いや フォロワーが１万人になったら」

and, "Once I get to 100 --

「10万人になったら―」

Once I get to a million followers, then I'll feel amazing."

「フォロワーが100万人になったら 気分がいいだろうな」

So I have 4.2 million followers on Twitter --

私は Twitter で420万人に フォローされていますが

it's never made me feel amazing.

だからって 気分がよくはありません

I'm not going to tell you how many I have on Instagram,

Instagram のフォロワー数は お教えしません

because I feel genuine shame about how low the number is,

フォロワーの少なさを 心から恥ずかしく思うからです

because I joined Instagram after "Batman" came out.

『バットマン』の公開後に 始めたものですから

(Laughter)

And I search other actors,

他の役者を検索して

and I see that their number is higher than mine,

自分よりフォロワーが 多いのを見ると

and it makes me feel terrible about myself.

自分はダメだと思います

Because the follower count

なぜなら フォロワー数というのは

makes everybody feel terrible about themselves.

全員に自分をダメだと 思わせるものだからです

That feeling of inadequacy is what drives you to post,

自分を不十分だと思う気持ちが 投稿を促し

so you can get more attention,

注目を集めようと思わせます

and then that attention that you get is what these companies sell,

皆さんの集めた注目を 会社が販売して

that's how they make their money.

それで稼いでいるんです

So there is no amount of attention you can get

ですから どれだけ注目を集めても

where you feel like you've arrived,

ついにやったぞ という気持ちには ―

and you're like, "Ah, I'm good now."

「ああ これでよし」とは ならないのです

And of course, there are a lot of actors who are more famous than I am,

もちろん 私より有名で フォロワーの多い役者は

have more followers than I do,

大勢いますが

but I bet you they would tell you the same thing.

きっと 同じことを言うでしょう

If your creativity is driven by a desire to get attention,

あなたの創造性が注目を集めたいという 願望に突き動かされるなら

you're never going to be creatively fulfilled.

その創造性が 満たされることはありません

But I do have some good news.

でも 良い知らせがあります

There is this other powerful feeling.

強力な感情は もうひとつあるんです

Something else you can do with your attention

あなたの注目の使い道は

besides letting a giant tech company control it and sell it.

巨大テック企業に支配され 販売される以外にもあるんです

This is that feeling I was talking about,

先程お話ししていた 演じることが大好きな理由です

why I love acting so much --

it's being able to pay attention to just one thing.

ただひとつのことに 注意を向けられるということです

Turns out there's actually some science behind this too.

これにも科学的裏付けが あるということが分かりました

Psychologists and neuroscientists --

心理学者や神経科学者は

they study a phenomenon they call flow,

「フロー」という現象を 研究しています

which is this thing that happens in the human brain

これは人の脳内で起こる現象で

when someone pays attention to just one thing,

人が ただひとつ― 例えばクリエイティブなことに

like something creative,

注意を向けていて

and manages not to get distracted by anything else.

他のことで気が散らないときに 脳で起こる現象です

And some say the more regularly you do this, the happier you'll be.

より頻繁にこれを経験すると より幸せを感じると言う人もいます

Now I'm not a psychologist or a neuroscientist.

私は心理学者でも 神経科学者でもありませんが

But I can tell you, for me, that is very true.

心から真実だと思います

It's not always easy, it's hard.

いつも簡単にできるわけではないし 大変です

To really pay attention like this takes practice,

しっかり注意を向けることには 練習が必要ですし

everybody does it their own way.

やり方もそれぞれでしょう

But if there's one thing I can share

that I think helps me focus and really pay attention, it's this:

I try not to see other creative people as my competitors.

他のクリエイティブな人たちを 競争相手だと思わないことです

I try to find collaborators.

協力できる人を探します

Like, if I'm acting in a scene,

例えば あるシーンの撮影で

if I start seeing the other actors as my competitors, and I'm like,

他の役者を競争相手だと 考えたら こう思うでしょう

"God, they're going to get more attention than I am,

「彼らの方が自分より注目されたら

people are going to be talking about their performance more than mine" --

自分よりも彼らの演技の方が 話題になってしまう」

I've lost my focus.

集中が途切れます

And I'm probably going to suck in that scene.

そのシーンの出来は きっと散々でしょう

But when I see the other actors as collaborators,

他の役者を 協力できる相手だと考えるなら

then it becomes almost easy to focus,

集中することが 容易になります

because I'm just paying attention to them.

彼らに注意を向けるだけだからです

And I don't have to think about what I'm doing --

自分のやることを 考える必要はなく

I react to what they're doing,

私は彼らに反応して

they react to what I'm doing,

彼らは私に反応することで

and we can kind of keep each other in it together.

共にその場に在ることができます

But I don't want you to think it's only actors on a set

こんな風に協力できるのが セットで演じる役者だけだとは

that can collaborate in this way.

考えてほしくありません

I could be in whatever kind of creative situation.

どんなクリエイティブな場でも ありえるでしょう

It could be professional, could be just for fun.

仕事かもしれませんし 趣味かもしれません

I could be collaborating with people I'm not even in the same room with.

同じ場所に居合わせない人と 協力することだってできるでしょう

In fact, some of my favorite things I've ever made,

気に入っている作品の中には

I made with people that I never physically met.

顔を合わせたことがない人と 作ったものもあります

And by the way,

ところで

this, to me, is the beauty of the internet.

それこそが インターネットの醍醐味です

If we could just stop competing for attention,

注目を集める競争をやめれば

then the internet becomes a great place to find collaborators.

インターネットは協力できる相手を 探すのに素晴らしい場所になります

And once I'm collaborating with other people,

他の人と協力し始めれば

whether they're on set, or online, wherever,

それがセットであれ ネットであれ どこであれ

that makes it so much easier for me to find that flow,

ずっと容易にフローを 見いだすことができます

because we're all just paying attention

to the one thing that we're making together.

And I fell like I'm part of something larger than myself,

and we all sort of shield each other

from anything else that might otherwise grab our attention,

and we can all just be there.

At least that's what works for me.

Sometimes.

Sometimes -- it doesn't always work.

Sometimes, I still totally get wrapped up in that addictive cycle

of wanting to get attention.

I mean, like, even right now,

can I honestly say there's not some part of me here who's like,

"Hey, everybody, look at me, I'm giving a TED Talk!"

「ねえ みんな見てよ TEDでトークしてるんだぜ！」

There is -- there's, you know, some part.

いますとも どこかにはね

But I can also honestly say

ですが 心からこう思います

that this whole creative process of writing and giving this talk,

このトークを考え お話しするという 創造的なプロセスは

it's been a huge opportunity for me to focus

自分が本当に大切に思っていることに

and really pay attention to something I care a lot about.

集中し 注意を向けるという 素晴らしい機会になりました

So regardless of how much attention I do or don't get as a result,

I'm happy I did it.
