You can ask anyone you want,

People of color and members of the LGBT community are tired

Tired of being told they're doing it wrong

or that it isn't even their place to show up at all.

This fatigue is impacting all of us.

And in fact,

I believe we won't succeed

until we approach justice in a new way.

I grew up in the middle of the civil rights movement

in the segregated South.

As a five-year-old girl,

I was very interested in ballet.

It seemed to be the five-year-old-girl thing to do in the 1960s.

My mother took me to a ballet school.

You know, the kind of school that had teachers

that talked about your gifts and talents

knowing that you'd never be a ballerina.

When we arrived,

they said nicely that they "did not accept Negroes."

We got back in the car as if we were just leaving a grocery store

that was out of orange juice.

We said nothing ...

हम कुछ नही बोले ...

just drove to the next ballet school.

अगले बैले विद्यालय की ओर चल पड़े।

They said, "We don't accept Negroes."

वह भी बोले, "हम नीग्रों को नही सिखाते"।

Well, I was confused.

मै उलझन में थी।

And I asked my mother why they didn't want me.

मैने अपनी माँ से पूछा क्यों वह मुझे लेते नही।

And she said, "Well, they're just not smart enough to accept you right now,

उन्होंने बोला , "वह बस तुम्हे सीखने के अयोग्य हैं,

and they don't know how excellent you are."

और वह नहीं जानते कि तुम कितनी अद्भुत हो।"

Well, I didn't know what that meant.

दरअसल, मुझे उसका अर्थ मालूम नहीं था।

But I was sure it wasn't good,

पर मै जानती थी कि अर्थ अच्छा नही था

because I could see it in my mother's eyes.

क्योंकि मै अपनी माँ की आँखों में देख पा रही थी।

She was angry,

वो क्रोधित थीं,

and it looked like she was on the verge of tears.

और ऐसा लग रहा थी कि वे आँसुओं की कगार पे थीं।

Well, I decided right then and right there

मैंने तब और वहीं निर्णय लिया कि

that ballet was dumb.

बैले मुर्ख था।

(Laughter)

You know, I had lots of experiences like that along the way,

आगे के समय में मेरे साथ ऐसे कई अनुभव हुए,

but as I got older,

लेकिन जैसे मै बड़ी हुई,

I started to get angry.

मै क्रोधित होने लगी।

And not just angry at the outright racism and injustice.

और क्रोधित सिर्फ अन्याय एवं भेदभाव पे ही नही।

I was angry at people that stood by and didn't say anything.

मै उन लोगों पे गुस्सा थी जो राहचलते होकर खामोश थे।

Like, why didn't the white parents in that ballet school say

क्यों नहीं उस बैले स्कूल मे गोरे माता-पिताों ने बोला

"Uh, that's wrong.

"ये गलत है।

Let that little girl dance."

उस छोटी लड़की को नाचने दो।"

Or why --

या क्यों नही --

(Applause)

Why didn't the white patrons in the segregated restaurants say

उन गोरे संरक्षकों ने बटे हुए रेस्टोरेंटों में बोला,

"Hey, that's not right.

"यार, ये गलत है।

Let that family eat."

उस परिवार को खाने दो।"

Well, it didn't take me long to realize

मुझे यह समझने में देर नहीं लगी कि

that racial injustice wasn't the only place

जातीय भेदभाव एकमात्र जगह नहीं है

that people in the majority were staying quiet.

जहा बहुमत की जन्ता शांत है।

When I'd sit in church and hear some homophobic comment

जब मै चर्च में कोई होमोफोबिक टिपण्णी जिसको

being disguised as something scriptural,

धार्मिक लेखन बताया जाता था, सुनती थी ,

I'd say, "I'm sorry,

तो मै कहती, "क्षमा चाहती हूँ,

why aren't the heterosexual churchgoers disrupting this nonsense?"

आप हेटेरोसेक्सयल ईसाई ऐसी बेतुकी को रोक क्यों नहीं रहें ?"

Or ...

या ...

in a room filled with boomers and Gen-Xers

एक जेन-एक्सर्स और बूमर्स से भरे कमरे में

who started degrading their millennial colleagues

जो अपने मिलेनिअल सहयोगियों को बेइज़्ज़त करने लगे

as being spoiled, lazy and overconfident,

उन्हें बिगड़ैल, आलसी, और घमंडी कह कर,

I'd say, "I'm sorry,

मै कहती, "क्षमा चाहती हूँ,

why isn't someone my age saying 'stop stereotyping?'"

I was used to standing up on issues like this,

मुझे ऐसे मुद्दों पर खड़े होने की आदत थी,

but why wasn't everyone else?

पर बाकी सब को क्यों नहीं थी?

My fifth grade teacher,

मेरी पांचवी कक्षा की अध्यापिका,

Mrs. McFarland,

मैकफारलैंड मैम

taught me that justice requires an accomplice.

ने मुझे सिखाया की न्याय को एक साथी की ज़रुरत है।

Not just anyone will do.

ऐसे ही किसी से भी काम नही चलेगा।

She said we need unlikely allies

उन्होंने कहा कि हमें असम्भाव्य साथियों की आवस्यकता है

if we want to see real change happen.

यदि हमें असल बदलाव देखना हो।

And for those of us experiencing injustice up front,

और हममे से उनके लिए जो सीधे रूप से भेदभाव अनुभव करते हैं,

we need to be willing to accept the help,

हमें मदद स्वीकार करने की चाह रखनी पड़ेगी,

because when we don't,

क्योंकि अगर हम चाह न रखें,

change takes too long.

I mean, imagine if heterosexual and gay people had not come together

under the banner of marriage equality.

Or what if President Kennedy

just wasn't interested in the civil rights movement?

Most of our major movements in this country might have been delayed

हमारे देश के महत्वपूर्ण आंदोलनों को विलंबित किया, या

or even dead

मार दिया जा सकता था,

if it weren't for the presence of unlikely allies.

हमारे असम्भाव्य साथियों की गैरमौजूदगी में।

When the same people speak up

अगर वही लोग, उस ही तरीके

in the same ways they've always spoken up,

से आवाज़ उठाएंगे जैसे वह करते आ रहे हैं ,

the most we'll ever get are the same results

over and over again.

You know, allies often stand on the sidelines

waiting to be called up.

But what if unlikely allies led out in front of issues?

what if Black and Native American people stood in front of immigration issues?

And what if able-bodied people advocated

You know, we can stand up for issues,

हम संकटों के विपक्ष और पीड़ितों

weigh in and advocate

even when it seems like the issue has nothing to do with us.

And actually,

those are the issues that are most compelling.

When white guys stand up to fight

for the liberation of Black and Brown people,

Black and Brown people will have to be willing to accept their help.

स्वीकार की चाह होनी चाहिए।

And I know that's complicated,

मै जानती हूँ की यह सरल नहीं है,

but this is collective work

पर यह सामूहिक कार्य है

and it requires everyone to be all in.

जिसमे सबका योगदान ज़रूरी है।

One day when I was at kindergarten,

एक दिन जब मै किंडरगार्टन में थी,

our teacher introduced us

हमारी अध्यापिका ने हमे

to this beautiful, tall, white lady named Miss Ann.

एक खूबसूरत, लम्बी, गोरी महिला से मिलाया, Miss Ann।

I thought she was the prettiest white lady I'd ever seen.

मुझे लगा मैने उनसे खबसूसरत गोरी महिला नहीं देखी थी।

Well, if I can be honest with you,

अगर मै आपसे सच बोलू,

I think it was the first time we'd ever seen a white lady in our school ever.

मुझे लगता है उस दिन पहली बार हमने स्कूल में गोरी महिला देखी थी।

(Laughter)

(हसीं)

Miss Ann stood in front of us,

Miss Ann सामने खड़ी हो गयीं

and she said she was going to start teaching ballet classes

और उन्होंने कहा की वो हमारे स्कूल में बैले

right there are our school

सीखना चालू करेंगी

and that she was proud to be our dance teacher.

और वो हमारी नृत्य की शिक्षक बनने पे गर्व करती हैं।

It was unreal.

यह वास्तविक नहीं लग रहा था।

All of a sudden --

अचानक से --

(sings) I didn't think ballet was dumb anymore.

(गाते हुए) मुझे अब नहीं लग रहा था कि बैले मुर्ख है।

(Laughter)

(हसीं)

You see, what I know now is Miss Ann was fully aware

अभी मै यह जानती हूँ कि Miss Ann इस बात से अवगत थी

that the white ballet schools would not accept Black girls.

कि गोरे बैले स्कूल अश्वेत लड़कियों को दाखिला नहीं करवाते।

She was incensed by that.

वो उससे नाराज थीं ।

So she came to the Black neighborhood

तो वो अश्वेत महल्ले में

to start teaching the dance classes herself.

नृत्य सीखने खुद आईं।

And you know, it took love and courage for her to do that.

उनको स्नेह एवं साहस लगा ऐसा करने के लिए।

(Applause)

And where there was no justice,

और जहां न्याय नहीं था, उन्होंने उसको

she just built it.

वहां बस निर्माण कर दिया।

We all survived,

हम सब बचे,

because we stood on the shoulders of our Black ancestors.

क्योंकि हम अपने अश्वेत पूर्वजों की राह पर चले।

We all thrived, because Miss Ann was an unlikely ally.

हम सब फले, क्योंकि Miss Ann एक असम्भाव्य साथी थीं।

You know, when you add your voice

जब आप अपनी आवाज़

and your actions

और अपने कार्यों

to situations that you don't think involve you,

का ऐसी परिस्थितियों में उपयोग करते हैं जिससे आपका वास्ता न हो,

you actually inspire others to do the same.

आप दूसरों को वही करने के लिए प्रेरित करते हैं।

Miss Ann inspired me to always be on the lookout

for situations that weren't about me

खोजूँ जो मेरे बारे में नहीं थीं

but where I saw injustice

पर जहां मैने अन्याय होते देखा हो

and inequality happening anyway.

और भेदभाव हो रहा हो।

I hope she inspires you, too,

उम्मीद है वे आपको भी प्रेरित करें,

because to win the fight for equity

क्योंकि एकता की लड़ाई जीतने के लिए

we will all need to speak up

हम सबको आवाज़ उठानी पड़ेगी

and stand up.

और खड़ा होना पड़ेगा।

We will all need to do that.

हम सबको यह करना पड़ेगा

And we will all need to do that

और हम सबको यह करना पडेगा

even when it's hard

कठिन हालातों में भी

and even when we feel out of place,

तब भी जब हमें अजीब लगे,

because it is your place,

क्योंकि वह आपकी जगह है,

and it is our place.

और हमारी जगह है।

Justice counts on all of us.

न्याय हम सब पर निर्भर है।
