I grew up in the middle of the civil rights movement

As a five-year-old girl,

I was very interested in ballet.

My mother took me to a ballet school.

You know, the kind of school that had teachers

that talked about your gifts and talents

knowing that you'd never be a ballerina.

정작 정말 그 아이가 커서 발레리나가 될 거라 생각은 하지 않는 학원이요.

When we arrived,

어머니와 내가 도착했을 때,

they said nicely that they "did not accept Negroes."

친절한 말투로 "흑인은 받지 않습니다." 하더군요.

We got back in the car as if we were just leaving a grocery store

우린 오렌지 주스를 사러 갔다가 없어서 그냥 온 것처럼 차로 돌아왔죠.

that was out of orange juice.

We said nothing ...

우린 아무 말도 하지 않았습니다.

just drove to the next ballet school.

그냥 다른 발레 학원으로 갔죠.

They said, "We don't accept Negroes."

그들도 같은 말을 했습니다. "흑인은 받지 않아요."

Well, I was confused.

전 좀 혼란스러웠어요.

And I asked my mother why they didn't want me.

그래서 어머니에게 왜 저를 받아주지 않느냐고 물었죠.

And she said, "Well, they're just not smart enough to accept you right now,

어머니는 말했죠. "저 사람들은 지금 너를 받아줄 만큼 똑똑하지가 않고,

and they don't know how excellent you are."

네가 얼마나 대단한지 모른단다."

(Cheers)

Well, I didn't know what that meant.

But I was sure it wasn't good,

because I could see it in my mother's eyes.

She was angry,

and it looked like she was on the verge of tears.

눈물이 터지기 일보직전이셨어요.

Well, I decided right then and right there

바로 그 순간 그 자리에서

that ballet was dumb.

You know, I had lots of experiences like that along the way,

저는 크면서 이와 비슷한 일들을 많이 경험했습니다.

but as I got older,

그런데 점점 나이를 먹으면서

I started to get angry.

화가 나기 시작하더군요.

And not just angry at the outright racism and injustice.

노골적인 인종 차별과 불공정함에 화가 나는 건 물론이고,

I was angry at people that stood by and didn't say anything.

옆에 서 있으면서 침묵하는 사람들에게도 화가 나더군요.

Like, why didn't the white parents in that ballet school say

왜 발레 학원에 있던 백인 부부는 이런 말을 하지 않았던 걸까요.

"Uh, that's wrong.

"그건 잘못된 거 같습니다.

Let that little girl dance."

저 소녀도 수업을 듣게 하시지요."

Or why --

혹은,

(박수)

(Applause)

왜 인종 분리 식당에 앉아 있던 백인 손님들은 이런 말을 하지 않았던 걸까요?

Why didn't the white patrons in the segregated restaurants say

"Hey, that's not right.

"여보시오, 그건 옳지 않은 일이오.

Let that family eat."

저 가족들이 식사할 수 있도록 하시오."

Well, it didn't take me long to realize

알고 봤더니

that racial injustice wasn't the only place

인종차별 문제에만 다수의 사람들이 침묵하는 건 아니더군요.

that people in the majority were staying quiet.

When I'd sit in church and hear some homophobic comment

제가 교회에 앉아 있다가

성서적인 것으로 위장한 동성애 혐오 발언을 들으면

being disguised as something scriptural,

I'd say, "I'm sorry,

저는 이렇게 말했죠.

"실례합니다만, 왜 이성애 신도들은 이런 터무니없는 말을 중단시키지 않는 거죠?"

why aren't the heterosexual churchgoers disrupting this nonsense?"

(Applause)

Or ...

또는

in a room filled with boomers and Gen-Xers

베이비붐 세대와 X세대가 가득한 방에서

who started degrading their millennial colleagues

밀레니엄 세대 직장 동료를 깔아뭉개며

버릇이 없다든지, 게으르며, 자신감이 쓸데없이 넘친다든지 라는 말을 하면,

as being spoiled, lazy and overconfident,

I'd say, "I'm sorry,

전 이렇게 말했죠.

"실례합니다만, 왜 나와 같은 나이대의 누군가가 '고정관념을 가지지 마세요' 라고 말하지 않는 거죠?"

why isn't someone my age saying 'stop stereotyping?'"

(Audience) Yes!

(청중) 옳소!

I was used to standing up on issues like this,

전 이런 문제에 저항하는데 익숙해져 있었습니다.

but why wasn't everyone else?

그런데 왜 다른 사람들은 그렇지 않았을까요?

My fifth grade teacher,

저의 5학년 때 선생님이셨던,

Mrs. McFarland,

맥팔런드 선생님은

taught me that justice requires an accomplice.

'정의구현에는 공조자가 필요하다' 라고 저에게 가르쳐 주셨어요.

Not just anyone will do.

아무나 공조자가 될 수 있는게 아닙니다.

선생님은 우리에게 예상 밖의 협력자가 필요하다고 하셨어요.

She said we need unlikely allies

if we want to see real change happen.

우리가 진정한 변화를 보기 원한다면 말이죠.

And for those of us experiencing injustice up front,

그리고 불의를 정면에서 경험하고 있는 사람들을 위해,

we need to be willing to accept the help,

우리는 그런 도움을 기꺼이 받을 수 있어야 합니다.

because when we don't,

왜냐하면 우리가 그렇게 하지 않을 때,

change takes too long.

I mean, imagine if heterosexual and gay people had not come together

under the banner of marriage equality.

Or what if President Kennedy

혹은 케네디 대통령이

just wasn't interested in the civil rights movement?

Most of our major movements in this country might have been delayed

이 나라의 대부분의 역사적 혁신은

훨씬 지연되었거나

or even dead

혹은 잊혀졌겠죠.

if it weren't for the presence of unlikely allies.

예상 밖의 협력자가 존재하지 않았다면 말이죠.

When the same people speak up

똑같은 사람들이 늘 하던 방식 그대로 목소리를 낸다면,

in the same ways they've always spoken up,

the most we'll ever get are the same results

잘해봐야 결국 같은 결과만 얻을 뿐입니다.

over and over again.

You know, allies often stand on the sidelines

waiting to be called up.

But what if unlikely allies led out in front of issues?

Like ...

what if Black and Native American people stood in front of immigration issues?

And what if able-bodied people advocated

for people living with disabilities?

장애인들을 옹호하고 나선다면요?

You know, we can stand up for issues,

우리는 불평등을 위해 목소리를 낼 수 있고

weigh in and advocate

개입해서 항변할 수 있습니다.

even when it seems like the issue has nothing to do with us.

그 문제들이 나와는 아무 상관 없어 보인다고 하더라도요.

And actually,

그리고 실제로

those are the issues that are most compelling.

그러한 문제들이 바로 가장 주목할 만 한 것들입니다 .

And sure,

당연히

people will have no idea why you are there,

사람들은 굳이 왜 당신이 발 벗고 나서는지 의아해 하겠죠.

but that's why those of us facing injustice

하지만 그 점이 바로 부당함을 겪고 있는 사람들이

must be willing to accept the help.

You know, we have to fight injustice

with a consciousness of grace.

When white guys stand up to fight

백인들이 유색인들의 해방을 위해 맞서 싸우면

for the liberation of Black and Brown people,

Black and Brown people will have to be willing to accept their help.

유색인들은 그 도움을 기꺼이 받을 줄 알아야 합니다.

And I know that's complicated,

but this is collective work

하지만 모두가 힘을 모아야 할 일입니다.

and it requires everyone to be all in.

One day when I was at kindergarten,

제가 유치원에 다니던 어느날,

our teacher introduced us

선생님이 저희에게

to this beautiful, tall, white lady named Miss Ann.

앤 선생님이라는 키가 크고 아름다운 백인 여성을 소개시켜 주셨는데

I thought she was the prettiest white lady I'd ever seen.

제가 본 가장 예쁜 백인 여성이셨어요.

Well, if I can be honest with you,

솔직히 말씀드리면,

I think it was the first time we'd ever seen a white lady in our school ever.

그 날이 우리 학교에서 처음으로 백인을 본 날이었던 것 같아요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

Miss Ann stood in front of us,

앤 선생님은 저희 앞에 서서

and she said she was going to start teaching ballet classes

발레를 가르쳐 주실 거라 하셨어요.

right there are our school

바로 우리 학교에서요.

and that she was proud to be our dance teacher.

게다가 우리에게 발레를 가르치는 걸 굉장히 자랑스러워하셨어요.

It was unreal.

믿기지 않았어요.

All of a sudden --

갑자기

(sings) I didn't think ballet was dumb anymore.

더 이상 발레가 바보같이 느껴지지 않았어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

You see, what I know now is Miss Ann was fully aware

지금 생각해보니 앤 선생님은

that the white ballet schools would not accept Black girls.

백인 발레 학원이 흑인 학생을 안 받는다는 사실을 인지하고 계셨고

She was incensed by that.

그 사실에 격분해 있었어요.

So she came to the Black neighborhood

그래서 선생님은 흑인 동네에 오셔서

to start teaching the dance classes herself.

자발적으로 무용을 가르치기 시작했습니다.

And you know, it took love and courage for her to do that.

그 분이 한 일은 사랑과 용기 없이는 힘든 일입니다.

(Applause)

And where there was no justice,

정의가 없는 곳에서,

she just built it.

정의를 구현하셨어요.

We all survived,

우린 모두 살아남았습니다.

because we stood on the shoulders of our Black ancestors.

우리의 흑인 조상들과 어깨를 나란히 했기 때문이죠.

We all thrived, because Miss Ann was an unlikely ally.

우린 모두 번영했습니다.

앤 선생님 같은 예상 밖의 협력자가 있었기 때문이죠.

You know, when you add your voice

의견을 피력하고

and your actions

나와 관련 없는 문제에 남을 위해 팔을 걷어붙이고 나서주는 행동은

to situations that you don't think involve you,

you actually inspire others to do the same.

다른 사람에게도 큰 영감을 줍니다.

Miss Ann inspired me to always be on the lookout

앤 선생님은 저에게 항상 깨어있으라는 영감을 주셨어요.

for situations that weren't about me

저와 상관없는 일 뿐만 아니라,

but where I saw injustice

부당함이 있는 곳이나

and inequality happening anyway.

불평등이 만연한 곳이면 어디든지요.

I hope she inspires you, too,

앤 선생님이 여러분에게도 영감이 되었으면 합니다.

because to win the fight for equity

왜냐하면 형평성을 위한 싸움에서 이기려면

we will all need to speak up

우리 모두가 의견을 피력하고

주장해야 합니다.

and stand up.

We will all need to do that.

우리 모두가 함께 해야 합니다.

And we will all need to do that

그리고 힘을 합쳐야 합니다.

even when it's hard

힘들어도

and even when we feel out of place,

because it is your place,

and it is our place.

Justice counts on all of us.
