We all know about the pandemic that has come to define 2020.

هەموومان دەربارەى پەتاى ٢٠٢٠ دەزانين.

Understandably, COVID-19 has dominated the world's agenda,

بەباشى، كۆڤيد-١٩ زاڵ بووە بەسەر بەرنامەى جيهانى،

and mandatory lockdowns were introduced in many countries

لە زۆر وڵات داخستنەكان دەركەوتن

to help control the spread of the virus.

بۆ يارمەتيدانى كەمكردنەوەى بڵاوبوونەوەى ڤايرۆسەكە

For many of us, the lockdown was inconvenient.

بۆ زۆربەمان، داخستنێكى نا ئاسوودەى بوو.

We couldn't go to our normal places of business,

نەمانتوانى بچينە شوێنى كارى سروشتى خۆمان،

we couldn't visit family or friends,

نەماندەتوانى سەردانى خێزان و هاوڕێكانمان بكەين،

and we couldn't socialize publicly.

نەمانتوانى پەيوەنديەكى گشتى دروست بكەين.

But for some people, though,

بەڵام بۆ هەندێك كەس،

the freedom to get out of the house

ئازادى بۆ بەجێهێشتنى ماڵ

was not just a matter of convenience

تەنها بابەتى پشوودان نەبوو

but of physical safety and even life or death.

بەڵكو بابەتى سەلامەتى جەستەيى و تەنانەت بابەتى ژيان و مردنيش بوو.

Based on my work, I see the great majority of those vulnerable people are women,

لەسەر بنەماى كارەكەم، دەبينم كە زۆرينەى هەرە زۆرى، گروپە لاوازەكانى ئافرەتان

and this resonates with me,

و ئەوە گونجاوە لەگەڵ من،

especially today as I give my talk from the safety of my home.

As a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist,

وەك پزيشكى منداڵ بوون و پزيشكى ئافرەتان،

I'm all too aware of the prevalence of gender-based violence

هەروەها بڵاوبوونەوەى توندووتيژى لەسەر بنەماى ڕەگەزى

in communities across Nigeria.

لە سەرانسەرى كۆمەڵگاكانى نەيجيريا.

And this is why I founded

the Women at Risk International Foundation, WARIF,

in 2016

Global estimates published by the WHO indicate

خەمڵاندنەكانى جيهان كە لەلايەن ڕێكخراوى تەندروستى جيهانى بڵاو كراونەتەوە

that one in three women worldwide have experienced an act of violence.

يەك لە سێى ژنانى جيهان دووچارى تووندوتيژى بوون.

And this was before the lockdown.

In March, an increase in the number of cases of violence against women

لە مانگى نەورۆز، حاڵەتەكان بەرز بوونەوە

was becoming apparent across the world,

amounting to a shadow pandemic that we are now faced with globally.

In France for example, there was a 30 percent increase

in the number of cases of domestic violence.

And in Argentina,

emergency calls from domestic violence cases

increased by 25 percent.

In the first two weeks of the lockdown in Lagos State,

our emergency phone lines rang nonstop,

and we recorded a 64 percent increase in calls

from women trapped at home with their abusers,

in fear for their lives.

By June, the authorities became aware of the shadow pandemic,

and a state of emergency on rape

بارى نا ئاسايى بۆ دەستدرێژى سێكسى ڕاگيەندرا

was declared by the federal government of Nigeria.

As we fielded the distressing calls from girls and women, young and old,

لەكاتێكدا وەڵامى ئەو تەلەفۆنە تەنگانەى ئافرەتان و كچان، گەنج و پيرمان دەدايەوە،

we were able to help,

ئامادەبووين بۆ هاوكارى،

as thankfully, we kept the WARIF rape crisis center open

خۆشبەختانە ناوەندى دەستدرێژى سێكسى و WARIF بە كراوەى مانەوە

as a refuge of last resort.

In the more remote areas,

لە زۆر ناوچە دوورەكان،

many women had to walk miles to receive any medical care and attention

as there was no transportation because of the lockdown.

بەهۆى نەبوونى گواستنەوە لە كاتى داخستنەكان.

They had no internet access to reach social media platforms,

دەستگەيشتنيان بە ئينتەرنێت و سەكۆكانى تۆڕە كۆمەڵايەتيەكان نەبوو،

and they had limited phone services

و خزمەتگوزارى تەلەفۆنيان كەم بوو

to call a 24-hour confidential helpline or even a neighbor.

تاوەكو پەيوەندى بە هێڵى يارمەتى نهێنى ٢٤ كاتژمێرى يان بە دراوسێ كەيەوە بكات.

So the situation for these women was much worse.

كەواتە دۆخەكە بۆ ئەم ژنانە زۆر خراپ بوو.

Our solution in addressing this was this:

چارەسەرەكە ئەمە بوو:

There are over 3,000 traditional birth attendants

زياتر لە ٣٠٠ ژنى ئاسايى هەيە

working in rural areas across Lagos State today.

ئەمڕۆ لە لادێكانى لاگۆس كار دەكەن.

These are community-based men and women

ژنان و پياوان لەناو كۆمەڵگاكەدا كار دەكەن

who have been informally trained

كە بە نافەرمى ڕاهێنانيان پێكراوە

and provide basic health care to both women and expectant mothers.

و چارەسەرى سەرەتايى پزيشكى بە ئافرەت و ژنى دووگيان دەدەن.

But none of them had received any form of training

بەڵام هيچ كاميان مەشق و ڕاهێنانيان پێ نەكراوە

on how to help women suffering from domestic violence.

لەسەر چۆنيەتى يارمەتيدانى ئەو ژنانەى كە تووندوتيژيان بەرامبەر دەكرێت.

We successfully trained 1,300 of these community gatekeepers

نزيكەى ١٣٠٠ كەسمان بە سەركەوتوويى مەشچ پێكرد

as first responders

وەك وەڵامدانەوەى يەكەم

in addressing the cases of violence against women

بۆ مامەڵە كردن لەگەڵ حاڵەتەكانى تووندوتيژى دژى ژنان

in their communities.

لەناو كۆمەڵگاكەياندا.

This meant that during the lockdown,

ئەمە واتە لە كاتى پرۆسەى داخستنەكە،

they were galvanized to go house to house in their communities

ئامادەن خانوو بە خانوو لە كۆمەڵگاكەيان بكەن

and with their training,

و بەو ڕاهێنانەى كە وەريان گرتووە،

were able to offer the necessary assistance

to women trapped at home, unable to receive care.

Reports varied from verbal and emotional abuse

to far worse beatings and sexual violence.

But those home visits

served as an opportunity for these women to share their stories

هەلێك بوو بۆ ئەو ژنانە كە چيڕۆكەكانيان هاوبەشى پێبكەن

and to receive the much needed care and support

و چاودێرى و پشگيرى پێويستيان لێ بكرێت

that the traditional birth attendants offered.

كە لەلايەن لەدايك بوونى نەريتيەوە دابين كراوە.

This program had been rolled out

ئەم بەرنامەيە دەستى پێكرد

across an additional seven local communities

and has reached nearly 35,000 people,

raising awareness of the shadow pandemic in these communities.

In the months to come,

we plan on including our other gatekeepers,

truly impacting on communities

and on the safety and the lives of these women.

As we embrace the new normal of working remotely from home

لە كاتێكدا ڕاهاتووين لە بارودۆخى تازە و كاركردن لە دوورەوەى ماڵ

and with online schooling,

و لەگەڵ خوێندنى سەرهێڵ،

it is more than likely

زياتر

that more women will be trapped at home with their abusers

ژنان بە دەست و پێوەندەكانيەوە لە ماڵەوە گيريان خواردووە

and this shadow pandemic will persist.

كە لە گەڵ ئەم نەخۆشيە بەردەوام دەبێت.

But I take hope and inspiration

بەڵام من هيوا و ئيلهام دەبەخشم

from the courage and determination

بە بوێرى و ديارى كردن

of the many who work to protect and support these women.

زۆر كەس كار بۆ پاراستن و پشتيوانى ئەم ژنانە دەكەن.

I have been awed by the unbelievable strength and the tenacity

زۆرم سەر لێدا بە هۆى باوەڕنەكردن بە هێز و توكمەيەكەى

that these women have shown during these precarious times

لەو كاتانەى ئەو ژنانە مەترسيان هەيە

and their ability to find their power in spite of all of this adversity.

توانايان هەيە بۆ دۆزينەوەى هێز لەناو ڕق لەو نەهامەتيە.

So, with or without the pandemic,

لەگەڵ پەتايەكە يان بەبێ پەتايەكە،

the work to protect girls and women continues,

كاركردن بۆ پاراستنى ژنان و كچان بەردەوامە،

because every girl and woman,

چونكە هەر كچ و ژنێك،

no matter what part of the world she lives,

بەبێ لەبەرچاو گرتنى شوێنەكەى لە جيهاندا،

has the right to live in a society free of any form of violence against her.

مافى هەيە لە كۆمەڵگايەكدا بژى خاڵى بێت لە تووندووتيژى.
