What is a cartoon really?

တကယ်တမ်း ကာတွန်းဆိုတာ ဘာလဲ။

Many of us love cartoons,

အများက ကာတွန်းတွေကို ကြိုက်တယ်။

most of us grew up reading them

အများစုက ဒါတွေဖတ်ရင်း၊ (သို့)

or having them read to us.

ဖတ်ခိုင်းရင်း ကြီးပြင်းလာခဲ့တာပါ။

The fact is, cartoons have been around a long time.

အမှန်ကတော့ ကာတွန်းတွေရှိနေခဲ့တာ အတော်ကြာခဲ့ပါပြီ။

There are all kinds of cartoons:

ကာတွန်း အမျိုးအစားပေါင်းစုံရှိတယ်။

strip comics,

ပင်တိုင်ရုပ်ပြ ဇာတ်လမ်းတို၊

comic books,

ရုပ်ပြ စာအုပ်တွေ၊

political cartoons,

နိုင်ငံရေး ကာတွန်းတွေ၊

single-panel cartoons,

တစ်ကွက် ကာတွန်းတွေ၊

graphic novels,

ဂရပ်ဖစ် ဝတ္ထုတွေ၊

web comics,

ဝက်ဘ် ဟာသတွေ၊

animation,

အန်နီမေးရှင်း၊

caricature,

ရုပ်ပြောင်တွေ၊

there is something for everyone.

လူတိုင်းအတွက်တော့ တစ်ခုခုရှိနေတယ်။

No matter the form them come in,

ဘယ်ပုံစံနဲ့ပဲ လာလာ

cartoons elicit all kinds of emotions from the viewer

ကာတွန်းတွေဟာ ကြည့်ရှသူတွေဆီက ပျော်ရွှင်မှု၊ ဝမ်းနည်းမှု၊ ဒေါသ၊

- happiness, sadness, anger, hilarity, calm -

မြူးတူးမှုနဲ့ အေးချမ်းမှုစတဲ့ စိတ်ခံစားမှု မျိုးစုံကို အစ်ထုတ်ပေးပြီး

and can transmit ideas in an instant.

တစ်ခဏအတွင်း စိတ်ကူးတွေကို ထုတ်လွှင့်ပေးနိုင်တယ်။

Cartoons are a universal medium enjoyed and understood

ကာတွန်းတွေဟာ ကမ္ဘာအဝှမ်း နယ်နိမိတ်တွေကို ဖြတ်ကာ

around the world and across borders.

နှစ်သက်၊ နားလည်ကြတဲ့ လူတိုင်း သိတဲ့ ဆက်သွယ်ရေး အရာတစ်ခုပါ။

This is why they have survived so long as an art form.

ဒါကြောင့် အနုပညာ ပုံစံတစ်ခုအဖြစ် ရှည်ကြာစွာ တည်တံ့ခဲ့တာပါ။

But how can a medium that is on the surface so simple

ဒါပေမဲ့ အပြင်ပန်းက ရိုးစင်းလွန်းတဲ့ ဆက်သွက်ရေး အရာဟာ

have so much influence and at times be so meaningful?

ဘယ်လိုလုပ်ပြီး ဒီလောက်ကို ဩဇာရှိကာ တစ်ခါတရံ အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရှိရတာလဲ။

Let's look at what a cartoon is.

ကာတွန်းဆိုတာ ဘာလဲဆိုတာ ကြည့်လိုက်ရအောင်။

It starts with an idea.

ဒါက စိတ်ကူးတစ်ခုနဲ့ စတင်တယ်။

The idea can be verbal,

စိတ်ကူးက နှုတ်ပြောစကား၊

written in words,

အရေး စကားလုံးတွေ

or it can be visual.

(သို့) အမြင်ပိုင်းရုပ်ပုံ ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

A visual idea is simply

အမြင်ပိုင်းစိတ်ကူးတစ်ခုဟာ ပုံတစ်ပုံ

a picture,

ကားချပ်တစ်ချပ်၊

a drawing,

a doodle.

လျှောက်ခြစ်တာ

ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

These ideas come from a variety of places.

ဒီစိတ်ကူးတွေက နေရာမျိုးစုံကနေ လာတာပါ။

Cartoonists might find the idea from observing life,

ကာတွန်းသမားတွေဟာ ဘဝကို ရှုမြင်ရင်း၊ သတင်စာတစ်စောင်

reading a newspaper,

ဖတ်ရင်း၊ အွန်လိုင်းမှာ

trawling online.

ပိုက်စိတ်တိုက်ရင်းကနေ စိတ်ကူးရနိုင်တယ်။

It can come from a sentence someone said

တစ်ယောက်ယောက် ပြောတာကနေ (သို့) ရုပ်သံမှာ ကြားတဲ့

or a single word heard on television.

စကားတစ်လုံးတည်းကနေ လာနိုင်တယ်။

Cartoonists are like sponges;

ကာတွန်းသမားတွေဟာ ရေမြုပ်တွေလိုပဲ

they soak up people, places, mannerisms, clothing, and behavior.

လူတွေ၊ နေရာတွေ၊ ဟန်အမူအရာတွေ၊ အဝတ်တွေ၊ အပြုအမူတွေကို စုပ်ယူတယ်။

Sometimes they might jot them down

တစ်ခါတစ်ရံ ဒါတွေကို သူတို့နဲ့အတူ

in a little black book that they carry around with them.

ဆောင်ထားတဲ့ စာအုပ်နက်ကလေးတစ်အုပ်မှာ တို့မှတ်ထားလောက်တယ်။

Other times, it is just soaked up into the cartoonist's brain

အခြားအချိန်တွေမှာတော့ ကာတွန်းသမားရဲ့ ဦးနှောက်ထဲမှာ စုပ်ယူပြီး

only to be squeezed out later when she is sitting at her drawing table.

နောက်ပိုင်း ပုံဆွဲစားပွဲမှာထိုင်တဲ့ အခါမှသာ ညှစ်ထုတ်တယ်။

Not only does a cartoonist have to be aware

ကာတွန်းသမားတစ်ယောက်ဟာ စက္ခုပိုင်းအရ

of what she is seeing visually,

မြင်နေရတာကို သတိပြုမိဖို့တင်မက

but she has to listen to herself think.

ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ တွေးတာကိုပါ နားထောင်ဖို့ လိုပါတယ်။

In other words, take the incoming information

တစ်နည်းဆိုရရင် ဝင်လာတဲ့ သတင်း အချက်အလက်တွေကို ယူပြီး

and select it, shape it, and then use it for a cartoon.

ရွေးချယ်၊ ပုံဖော်ကာ နောက်တော့ ကာတွန်းမှာ သုံးတာပါ။

Now that you have an idea,

အခု သင့်မှာ စိတ်ကူးတစ်ခု

or something you think could be good for a cartoon,

(သို့) ကာတွန်းအတွက် ကောင်းနိုင်တယ်လို့ ထင်တာ တစ်ခုရှိရင်

it's time to shape it.

ဒါကို ပုံဖော်ဖို့ အချိန်ပါ။

A cartoon is like a staged play.

ကာတွန်းတစ်ခုဟာ စင်တင်ပြဇာတ်လိုပါ။

A cartoonist is playwright,

ကာတွန်းသမာက ဇာတ်ညွန်းရေးသူ၊

director,

stage designer,

ဒါရိုက်တာ၊

စင်ကို ပုံဖော်သူ၊

choreographer,

ကကွက်ဖန်တီးသူနဲ့

and costume designer.

အဝတ်အစား ဖန်တီးသူပါ။

A cartoon has characters,

ကာတွန်းတစ်ခုမှာ ဇာတ်ကောင်

a set,

dialogue,

အခင်းအကျင်း၊

စကားပြော၊

even if one line,

တစ်ကြောင်းဆိုရင်တောင်

and a backstory.

နောက်ခံဇာတ်ကြောင်းပါတယ်။

The characters must be dressed to fit the idea,

ဇာတ်ကောင်တွေကို စိတ်ကူးနဲ့ လိုက်အောင် ဆင်ရမယ်၊၊

speak in a way that is natural and forwards the idea

သဘာဝကျပြီး စိတ်ကူးကို ဦးတည်တဲ့ နည်းနဲ့ စကားပြောရမယ်၊

or gives the punchline.

(သို့) အရွှန်းဖောက်ရမယ်ပေါ့။

Nothing should be in the cartoon

စိတ်ကူး တိုးမြှင့်ရေးအတွက်

that is not absolutely necessary for the advancement of the idea.

လုံးဝမလိုအပ်တာ ကာတွန်း တစ်ခုထဲမှာ မရှိသင့်ပါဘူး။

The image and words have to <i>dance</i> together

ပုံရိပ်နဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေဟာ အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရှိတဲ့ နည်းလမ်းတစ်ခုမှာ

in a way that makes sense.

တွဲကဖို့ လိုတယ်။

It could be a graceful dance, or an awkward dance,

ဒါဟာ ဟာသ(သို့) စိတ်ကူးရဲ့ အပိုင်းဆိုရင် တင့်တယ်တဲ့ အကတစ်ကွက်

if that is part of the humor or idea.

(သို့) ခွကျတဲ့ ကကွက်တစ်ကွက် ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

And then the execution.

ဒီနောက်မှာ အကောင်အတည်ဖော်မှုပါ။

Some cartoonists sketch the idea with pencil

တချို့ကာတွန်းသမားတွေက စိတ်ကူးကို ခဲတံနဲ့

then ink it with pen using a light box.

ပုံကြမ်းရေးကာ အလင်းမီးအိမ်သုံးပြီး ကလောင်နဲ့ မင်ထည့်တယ်။

Others visualize the image in their head

အခြားသူတွေက ပုံရိပ်ကို ခေါင်းထဲမှာ

and draw directly on the paper in pen.

မြင်ယောင်ပြီး ကလောင်နဲ့ စာရွက်ပေါ်မှာ တိုက်ရိုက် ရေးဆွဲတယ်။

Different kinds of pens are used:

ကလောင်မျိုးစုံကို အသုံးပြုပါတယ်။

felt-tip, mechanical pen, or a crow quill.

ကလောင် အပြား၊ စက်သုံးကလောင် (သို့) ငန်းတောင် ကလောင်ပါ။

Paper can be light-weight or heavy-bond.

စာရွက်က ပါးပါး(သို့) ထူထူထဲထဲဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

Many cartoonists add gray tone, called a wash,

ကာတွန်းသမားများစွာဟာ ရေဆေးအနက်နဲ့ စုတ်တံကို သုံးပြီး

by using black watercolor and a brush.

wash လို့ခေါ်တဲ့ မီးခိုးရောင် ထည့်တယ်။

Others use a soft pencil for the tone.

အခြားသူတွေကတော့ အရောင်အတွက် ခဲတံ ဖျေ​ော့ဖျော့ သုံးတယ်။

Color is usually created by using watercolor.

ထုံးစံအရ အရောင်ကို ရေဆေးသုံးပြီး ဖန်တီးတာပါ။

A finished cartoon can then be scanned and adjusted,

ပြီးသွားတဲ့ ကာတွန်းတစ်ခုကို စကင်ဖတ် အရောင်ညှိကာ

and the caption can be added on the computer with Photoshop.

စာသားကို Photoshop နဲ့ ကွန်ပြူတာမှာ ထည့်နိုင်တယ်။

New technologies are emerging for the cartoonist's use in creating her cartoon.

နည်းပညာသစ်တွေဟာ ကာတွန်းသမားရဲ့ ကာတွန်းဖန်တီးဖို့အတွက် ပေါ်လာနေတယ်။

Photoshop can serve as a tool for color and image.

အရောင်နဲ့ ပုံရိပ်အတွက် Photoshop က အသုံးဝင်နိုင်တယ်။

Some may draw directly on a tablet with a stylus.

တချို့က ကညစ်နဲ့ တက်ဘလက်မှာ တိုက်ရိုက် ရေးဆွဲနိုင်တယ်။

The choices at this stage of creation work in tandem with the idea,

ဒီဖန်တီးတဲ့ အဆင့်က ရွေးချယ်မှုတွေက စိတ်ကူးနဲ့ အတိုင်အဖောက်ညီညီ လုပ်ကာ

and often when the final caption is added,

မကြာခဏတော့ နောက်ဆုံးစာသား ထည့်ပြီးရင်

it gets adjusted yet again.

ထပ်ပြီး ချိန်ညှိရပါတယ်။

But, little is left to chance,

ဒါပေမဲ့ အခွင့်အလမ်းက မရှိသလောက်ပါ။

except, perhaps, some of the watercolor.

ဖြစ်လောက်တာ တချို့ ရေးဆေးက လွဲရင်ပေါ့။

All these elements function in concert with one another.

ဒီအစိတ်အပိုင်းအားလုံးဟာ တစ်ခုနဲ့တစ်ခု ပူးပေါင်း လုပ်ဆောင်တယ်။

It's almost like a dance of words, ideas, and images

ကာတွန်းဖန်တီးဖို့ အတူတူ လုပ်ဆောင်တဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေ၊

that work together in order to make the cartoon

စိတ်ကူးတွေနဲ့ ပုံရိပ်တွေရဲ့ အကတစ်ခုလို နီးပါးပါ။

a timeless, resilient work of art.

ထာဝရ ဒဏ်ခံနိုင်တဲ့ အနုပညာလက်ရာတစ်ခုပါ။
