What is a cartoon really?

만화는 정말 뭘까요?

Many of us love cartoons,

많은 사람들이 만화를 좋아합니다.

most of us grew up reading them

우리들 대부분이 만화를 읽으면서 자라거나

or having them read to us.

누군가가 우리한테 만화를 읽어줬어요.

The fact is, cartoons have been around a long time.

사실 만화는 오랫동안 우리 곁에 있었습니다.

There are all kinds of cartoons:

여러 가지 만화가 있어요.

strip comics,

연재만화,

comic books,

만화책,

political cartoons,

정치 풍자 만화,

single-panel cartoons,

한 컷짜리 만화,

graphic novels,

장편 만화,

web comics,

웹 만화,

animation,

애니메이션,

caricature,

풍자화,

there is something for everyone.

저마다 재미를 느낄 수 있어요.

No matter the form them come in,

어떤 형태로 그리든,

cartoons elicit all kinds of emotions from the viewer

만화는 독자로부터 온갖 감정을 끌어내지요.

- happiness, sadness, anger, hilarity, calm -

- 행복, 슬픔, 성냄, 우스움, 고요함 -

and can transmit ideas in an instant.

그리고 생각을 바로 전달할 수 있어요.

Cartoons are a universal medium enjoyed and understood

만화는 세계 어디서나 국경을 넘어

around the world and across borders.

누구나 즐길 수 있고 이해할 수 있는 매체입니다.

This is why they have survived so long as an art form.

이런 까닭으로 만화는 오랫동안 예술의 형태로 살아 남았어요.

But how can a medium that is on the surface so simple

하지만 얼핏 보기에는 아주 단순한 매체가 어떻게

have so much influence and at times be so meaningful?

그렇게 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있고 때로는 중요한 의미를 가질 수 있을까요?

Let's look at what a cartoon is.

만화가 무엇인지 봅시다.

It starts with an idea.

만화는 생각으로 시작합니다.

The idea can be verbal,

생각은 말로 나타낼 수도 있고,

written in words,

글로 쓰거나,

or it can be visual.

그림으로 나타낼 수 있어요.

A visual idea is simply

눈에 보이는 생각은 그냥

a picture,

사진,

a drawing,

a doodle.

그림,

낙서일 수 있어요.

These ideas come from a variety of places.

이런 생각은 여러 곳에서 나옵니다.

Cartoonists might find the idea from observing life,

만화가는 삶을 관찰하거나,

reading a newspaper,

신문을 읽거나,

trawling online.

인터넷을 뒤져서 생각을 얻기도 하지요.

It can come from a sentence someone said

생각은 누가 한 말에서 나올 수도 있고

or a single word heard on television.

텔레비젼에서 들은 한 마디에서 나올 수도 있어요.

Cartoonists are like sponges;

만화가는 스펀지같아요.

they soak up people, places, mannerisms, clothing, and behavior.

만화가는 사람, 장소, 버릇, 옷, 행동을 모두 받아들입니다.

Sometimes they might jot them down

때로는 그 모두를

in a little black book that they carry around with them.

늘 지니고 다니는 검정색 작은 수첩에 적습니다.

Other times, it is just soaked up into the cartoonist's brain

어떤 때에는 이런 것들이 모두 만화가의 머리속으로 빨아들인 다음,

only to be squeezed out later when she is sitting at her drawing table.

나중에 책상에 앉아서 그걸 짜내지요.

Not only does a cartoonist have to be aware

만화가는 자기가 무엇을 보는지

of what she is seeing visually,

알아 차려야 할 뿐 아니라

but she has to listen to herself think.

생각하는 자기한테 귀기울여야 합니다.

In other words, take the incoming information

다시 말해, 들어오는 정보를 가지고

and select it, shape it, and then use it for a cartoon.

정보를 고르고, 형태를 만들어 만화로 만들어 내야 하지요.

Now that you have an idea,

이제 어떤 생각이 떠올랐다고 해보죠.

or something you think could be good for a cartoon,

아니면 만화로 만들기에 좋은 뭔가가 있다면,

it's time to shape it.

생각을 형태로 만들어야 합니다.

A cartoon is like a staged play.

만화는 무대에 올려진 연극 같아요.

A cartoonist is playwright,

만화가는 극작가,

director,

stage designer,

감독,

무대 장치가,

choreographer,

안무가,

and costume designer.

의상 디자이너입니다.

A cartoon has characters,

만화는 여러 등장인물들,

a set,

dialogue,

배경,

대화,

even if one line,

한 줄뿐이라고 해도

and a backstory.

배경 이야기가 있어요.

The characters must be dressed to fit the idea,

등장인물은 생각에 어울리는 옷을 입어야 하고,

speak in a way that is natural and forwards the idea

자연스럽게 말하고 생각을 내놓거나

or gives the punchline.

핵심을 말해야죠.

Nothing should be in the cartoon

생각을 발전시키는데 꼭 필요하지 않으면

that is not absolutely necessary for the advancement of the idea.

그 어떤 것도 만화에 있으면 안 됩니다.

The image and words have to <i>dance</i> together

그림과 말은 뜻이 통하도록

in a way that makes sense.

함께 춤춰야 합니다.

It could be a graceful dance, or an awkward dance,

우아한 춤일 수도 있고, 서투른 춤일 수도 있어요.

if that is part of the humor or idea.

만일 그게 유머나 생각의 일부이기만 하다면요.

And then the execution.

그런 뒤에는 실행이죠.

Some cartoonists sketch the idea with pencil

어떤 만화가는 연필로 생각을 그리고

then ink it with pen using a light box.

조명상자를 써서 펜으로 덧칠을 하지요.

Others visualize the image in their head

다른 만화가는 머릿속에 그림을 구상하여

and draw directly on the paper in pen.

바로 종이에 펜으로 그립니다.

Different kinds of pens are used:

여러 가지 펜을 쓰지요.

felt-tip, mechanical pen, or a crow quill.

펠트펜, 샤프펜, 까마귀 깃펜.

Paper can be light-weight or heavy-bond.

종이는 가볍거나 두껍게 묶인 것일 수 있어요.

Many cartoonists add gray tone, called a wash,

많은 만화가들이 검정색 수채화 물감과 붓으로

by using black watercolor and a brush.

워시라고 부르는 회색을 입힙니다.

Others use a soft pencil for the tone.

다른 사람들은 색을 입힐 때 연필을 씁니다.

Color is usually created by using watercolor.

보통은 수채화 물감으로 색깔을 만듭니다.

A finished cartoon can then be scanned and adjusted,

작업이 끝난 만화는 스캔하고 수정해서

and the caption can be added on the computer with Photoshop.

컴퓨터에서 포토샵(Photoshop) 으로 대사를 넣습니다.

New technologies are emerging for the cartoonist's use in creating her cartoon.

만화가가 만화를 만드는데 쓸 수 있는 새로운 기술이 나타나고 있어요.

Photoshop can serve as a tool for color and image.

포토샵은 색깔과 그림을 위한 도구로 쓸 수 있어요.

Some may draw directly on a tablet with a stylus.

어떤 사람들은 스타일러스 펜으로 태블릿 컴퓨터에 바로 그리기도 하죠.

The choices at this stage of creation work in tandem with the idea,

만드는 과정에서는 생각에 따라 선택하고,

and often when the final caption is added,

흔히 마지막 대사를 넣은 뒤

it gets adjusted yet again.

다시 고치기도 합니다.

But, little is left to chance,

하지만 수채화 물감을 제외하고는

except, perhaps, some of the watercolor.

기회는 거의 없지요.

All these elements function in concert with one another.

이런 요소들이 모두 잘 어우러져 작동합니다.

It's almost like a dance of words, ideas, and images

그건 마치 만화를 끝없이, 굴하지 않는 예술작품으로

that work together in order to make the cartoon

만들기 위해 말, 생각, 그림들이

a timeless, resilient work of art.
