Everyone knows that stories

You see, just as we can look at a story's plot,

setting,

시간과 장소,

and characters,

등장인물을 볼 수 있는 것과 마찬가지로,

we can also study the history

우리는 각 어휘가

of an individual word,

그 발달된 곳의

where it developed,

역사를 공부할 수 도 있고,

and the cultures and people

그걸 형성하도록 도운 문화와 사람들에 대해서도

who helped shape it.

공부할 수 있습니다.

Looking into the story of a word

어휘의 이야기를 조사하는 것은

is like counting the rings of a tree.

나무의 나이테를 세는것과 같습니다.

Newer words, like Google

구글이나 사이보그와 같은

or cyborg,

새로운 말들은,

have shorter stories.

짧은 이야기를 지니지요.

But the older the word,

하지만 그 어휘가 오래되었을수록,

the longer the story

그 이야기는 더 오래된 것이고,

and the more it stands to reveal to us

그것은 더욱더 우리에게 드러내는 것을 분명히 하죠.

not only about itself,

그 자체 뿐만이 아니라,

but about ourselves and our history.

우리 자신들과 우리의 역사에 관해서 말이죠.

The oldest words in present-day English

현대 영어에서 가장 오래된 어휘들은

are those that come from Old English,

고대영어에서

the ancestor of our modern language

그 처음의 씨가 뿌려졌던

whose first seeds were planted

현대 언어의 조상이었던

about 1500 years ago.

약 1500년 전에 비롯된 것입니다.

Compared to languages like Greek or Chinese

그리스어, 중국어 등

that date back thousands of years,

English is just a sapling in the lexical forest.

But the stories of its words

often start long before English itself took root.

One such word is the familiar word true,

그같은 어휘중의 하나는 친숙한 단어인,

as in true stories.

Let's take a look.

True usually means factual, correct,

'true (진실)' 이라는 말은 보통 사실적, 올바른,

or faithful to reality.

또는 현실에 충실한 것입니다.

It can also mean exact,

그건 또한 정확한,

properly positioned,

적절히 배치된,

upright,

정의로운,

or straight.

또는 똑바른의 뜻을 지닙니다.

A true friend is loyal,

참된 친구는 신의가 있고,

reliable,

의지할 수 있고,

faithful,

믿음직하고,

and steadfast.

일정불면합니다.

The word true is a simple word,

그 어휘, "true (진실한)"는 단순한 어휘이고,

and we can add some affixes

몇몇 접사를 가미시켜서

to grow its family tree

"truer (더 진실한)"과 같은 단어들로

with words like truer,

그 해당 어휘를 나무모양의 언어계통도로 늘릴 수 있습니다.

truest,

truest (가장 참된),

truly,

truly (참된),

truth,

and untruth.

But if we go in the other direction

to look at the roots of true itself,

we find even more relatives

further up the family tree.

The words trust,

bethroth,

and truce

all derive from the same source as true,

and these words all denote faithfulness

A thousand years ago,

the word true looked and sounded

different than it does today.

In several Old English dialects,

the word treow was a noun

that meant good faith or trust,

But it also had another definition,

If we trace the roots back even farther,

Trees have also held a sacred place

in many cultures throughout history.

The Celtic peoples

캘틱의

who first inhabited the British Isles

영국의 섬에서 처음 거주했던 민족은

believed that trees housed deities.

나무들이 신들을 거주시켰다고 믿었습니다.

And, in fact, the ancient Druids take their name

사실, 고대의 드루이드계급은 그 이름을

from the same ancient root as tree.

나무와 같은 고대의 근원에서 따왔지요.

Planting a tree is itself an act of faith

나무를 심는것 자체가 신념과

and commitment.

헌신의 행동입니다.

Not only are trees upright and prototypically straight,

but they are actual, solid, and real,

something you can see and touch.

And they are as reliable and steadfast to us today

as they were a millennium ago,

Philosophers and poets,

people in search of the truth,

"truth (진실)"을 추구하는 사람들은,

have often sought it in trees.

"What did the tree learn from the Earth

to be able to talk with the sky?"

asked Pablo Neruda.

"A tree falls the way it leans,"

"나무는 그것이 기대는 곳으로 넘어집니다,"라고

says an old proverb.

늙은 속담은 말합니다.

Just as trees mark our landscapes

나무들이 우리의 지형을 표시하고

and witness our histories,

우리의 역사를 목격하는 것처럼,

the stories of words landscape our language,

어휘의 이야기는 우리 언어의 지형을,

capturing the rains and sunshine of generations

수많은 세대들의 비와 맑은날씨를 포착하고

and sending roots and branches far and wide.

뿌리와 가지들을 멀리, 넓게 보냅니다.

As there is a whole orchard in a single seed,

단 한개의 씨앗안에 전체의 과수원이 있듯이,

there is a whole story in a single word,

단 한개의 어휘에 전체의 이야기가 있죠.

and that's the truth.

그리고, 그것이 "truth" (진실) 입니다.
