"Jabberwocky": One of literature's best bits of nonsense

that somehow manage to make sense.

더 미루지 않고 바로 소개하겠습니다.

"Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll.

‘재버워키’, 루이스 캐롤 작.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:

밥짓때 유끈한 토브들이 운덕땅 회둘러 뚫치고

All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.

보로곱새 모두들 애냘프고 슬량한 녹꾸리들 휘짖었네.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!

“재버워크를 조심해라, 아들아!

턱으로 꽉 물고 발톱으로 낚아챌테니.

Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!”

줍줍 새를 조심해라, 피하거라. 화뿜는 밴더스내치를!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand; Long time the manxome foe he sought—

아이는 보펄 칼 손에 쥐고

무측 적 오랫동안 찾아 헤맸지.

So rested he by the Tumtum tree And stood awhile in thought.

그러다 텀텀 나무 곁에 쉬며

한동안 생각에 잠겨 섰네.

And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,

쉰드렁 생각에 잠겨 서 있으니

재버워크가 두 눈에 불을 켜고

Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came!

어두침한 숲을 헤치고 나와 꿍얼거리며 다가왔더랬지.

One, two! One, two! And through and through

하나, 둘! 하나, 둘! 그리고 푹! 푹!

The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!

보펄 칼날을 쓱썩 휘둘렀네!

He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back.

괴물을 죽이고 머리만 가지고선 아이는 의기양양 휘딱 돌아왔지.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy!

“옳지, 네가 재버워크를 잡았구나.

이리 온, 나의 희환찬 아들아!

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”

오, 기쁜찬 날이로다! 얼씨구! 좋다!”

He chortled in his joy.

아비는 기뻐 끌껄거리며 웃었네.
