In the past few months, I've been traveling for weeks at a time

So I looked through my suitcase and I couldn't find anything to wear.

I was lucky to be at the technology conference on that day,

and I had access to 3D printers.

So I quickly designed a skirt on my computer,

and I loaded the file on the printer.

프린터에 그 파일을 올렸습니다.

It just printed the pieces overnight.

그러자 프린터는 밤새 스커트 조각들을 인쇄하였습니다.

The next morning, I just took all the pieces,

assembled them together in my hotel room,

and this is actually the skirt that I'm wearing right now.

So it wasn't the first time that I printed clothes.

제가 옷을 인쇄한 것은 그때가 처음이 아니었습니다.

For my senior collection at fashion design school,

패션 디자인 학교 졸업 콜렉션에서,

I decided to try and 3D print an entire fashion collection from my home.

저는 집에서 패션 컬렉션 전부를 3D프린트 만들기로 결정하였습니다.

The problem was that I barely knew anything about 3D printing,

문제는 제가 3D프린팅에 대해 아는 것이 거의 없다는 것이었죠.

and I had only nine months to figure out how to print five fashionable looks.

그리고 저에겐 5개의 멋짓 스타일을 인쇄하는데 9개월 밖에 없었습니다.

I always felt most creative when I worked from home.

전 항상 집에서 일할 때 가장 창작열을 느꼈습니다.

I loved experimenting with new materials,

저는 새로운 재료들을 가지고 실험하는게 좋았고

and I always tried to develop new techniques

저는 항상 새로운 기법들을 개발하려고 시도했었습니다.

to make the most unique textiles for my fashion projects.

제 패션 프로젝트를 위한 독특한 옷감들을 만들기 위해 말이죠.

I loved going to old factories and weird stores

이상한 파우더나 재료들을 찾기 위해

in search of leftovers of strange powders and weird materials,

오래된 공장이나 기묘한 상점들을 돌아다녔습니다.

and then bring them home to experiment on.

그리고 그것들을 집에 가져와 실험을 했죠.

As you can probably imagine,

여러분들도 상상하셨겠지만,

my roommates didn't like that at all.

제 룸메이트들은 그것을 전혀 좋아하지 않았죠.

So I decided to move on to working with big machines,

저는 대형 기계 작업을 해보기로 결정했습니다.

ones that didn't fit in my living room.

제 거실에는 들어가지 않는 기계들 말이죠.

I love the exact and the custom work I can do

온갖 패션 기술을 가지고 할 수 있는

with all kinds of fashion technologies,

정밀한 맞춤식 작업들이 굉장히 좋았습니다.

like knitting machines and laser cutting and silk printing.

뜨개질 기계, 레이저 절단기, 실크 프린팅 같은 것들 말이죠.

One summer break, I came here to New York for an internship

여름 방학 때, 뉴욕 차이나 타운에 있는

at a fashion house in Chinatown.

패션 하우스에서 인턴쉽을 했었습니다.

We worked on two incredible dresses that were 3D printed.

저희는 3D프린터로 두 벌의 멋진 드레스를 만들었죠.

They were amazing -- like you can see here.

그 옷들은 정말 굉장 했죠. 지금 보시는 것과 같이 말이죠.

But I had a few issues with them.

그렇지만, 몇 가지 문제점이 있었습니다.

They were made from hard plastics and that's why they were very breakable.

딱딱한 플라스틱으로 만들어졌기 때문에 부러지기가 아주 쉬웠죠.

The models couldn't sit in them,

모델은 그 옷을 입고 앉을수도 없었고,

and they even got scratched from the plastics under their arms.

With 3D printing, the designers had so much freedom

3D프린터는 디자이너들에게 굉장한 자유를 주었습니다.

to make the dresses look exactly like they wanted,

디자이너들이 원하는 정확한 모양으로 옷을 만들 수 있도록 해주었습니다.

but still, they were very dependent on big and expensive industrial printers

하지만 여전히 3D프린터는 연구실에서나

that were located in a lab far from their studio.

쓸수 있는 고가의 대형 프린터였죠.

Later that year, a friend gave me a 3D printed necklace,

그 후 몇년 뒤, 제 친구가 저에게 3D프린터로 만든 목걸이를 주었습니다.

printed using a home printer.

가정용 프린터를 사용해서 말이죠.

I knew that these printers were much cheaper

and much more accessible than the ones we used at my internship.

이용하기 쉬워졌다는 것을 알았습니다.

So I looked at the necklace,

그래서 목걸이를 한번 보았습니다.

and then I thought, "If I can print a necklace from home,

why not print my clothes from home, too?"

I really liked the idea that I wouldn't have to go to the market

and pick fabrics that someone else chose to sell --

I could just design them and print them directly from home.

I found a small makerspace,

where I learned everything I know about 3D printing.

작은 메이커스페이스를 찾았습니다.

Right away, they literally gave me the key to the lab,

그들은 저에게 바로 연구실 키를 주었고

so I could experiment into the night, every night.

The main challenge was to find the right filament for printing clothes with.

So what is a filament?

Filament is the material you feed the printer with.

And I spent a month or so experimenting with PLA,

which is a hard and scratchy, breakable material.

The breakthrough came when I was introduced to Filaflex,

which is a new kind of filament.

필라멘트의 새 종류중 하나이죠.

It's strong, yet very flexible.

필라펙스는 강하고 매우 유연합니다.

And with it, I was able to print the first garment,

저는 첫 번째 옷을 이것으로 프린트할 수 있었습니다.

the red jacket that had the word "Liberté" --

"Liberté" 라고 불리는 빨간 자켓이죠.

"freedom" in French --

불어로 '자유'란 뜻으로

embedded into it.

옷에 그 의미를 담았죠.

I chose this word because I felt so empowered and free

제가 그 단어를 선택한 이유는, 제가 자유로워졌다고 느꼈기 때문입니다.

when I could just design a garment from my home

저는 이 옷을 집에서 디자인 하고

and then print it by myself.

직접 프린트만 하면 되는 것이죠.

And actually, you can easily download this jacket,

그리고 사실 여러분들도 이 자켓을 쉽게 다운로드할 수 있고

and easily change the word to something else.

이름도 쉽게 바꿀 수 있습니다.

For example, your name or your sweetheart's name.

예를들어, 당신의 이름이나, 또는 연인의 이름으로 말이죠.

So the printer plates are small,

프린터 플레이트는 작습니다.

so I had to piece the garment together, just like a puzzle.

그리서 저는 옷을 조각으로 만들어 퍼즐처럼 조합해야 했습니다.

And I wanted to solve another challenge.

저는 또 다른 도전을 해보고 싶었습니다.

I wanted to print textiles

바로 제가 평소에 사용하던 소재로

that I would use just like regular fabrics.

옷감을 프린트 하는 것이죠.

That's when I found an open-source file

저는 제가 좋아하는 건축가가

from an architect who designed a pattern that I love.

디자인한 패턴의 오픈소스 파일을 찾아서

And with it, I was able to print a beautiful textile

아름다운 옷감을 프린트할 수 있었습니다.

that I would use just like a regular fabric.

제가 사용하고 싶은 일반적인 옷감 같이 말이죠.

And it actually even looks a little bit like lace.

그리고 심지어 그것은 레이스 같이 보이기도 했습니다.

So I took his file and I modified it, and changed it, played with it --

many kinds of versions out of it.

And I needed to print another 1,500 more hours

to complete printing my collection.

So I brought six printers to my home and just printed 24-7.

And this is actually a really slow process,

but let's remember the Internet was significantly slower 20 years ago,

so 3D printing will also accelerate

3D 프린팅도 역시 빨라질 것입니다.

and in no time you'll be able to print a T-Shirt in your home

in just a couple of hours, or even minutes.

Fashion is also a very physical thing.

And I wonder what our world will look like

그래서 저는 제 스커트 처럼 옷이 디지털화 되면

when our clothes will be digital, just like this skirt is.
