Today we're going to be looking at two words.

ဒီနေ့တော့ စကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးကို လေ့လာကြည့်ပါမယ်။

These two words.

ဒီစကားလုံးနှစ်လုံး။

They look the same

သူတို့ကြည့်ရတာ တူသလို

and they almost sound the same,

အသံချင်းတူ

but they're different.

First I'll say the sentence quickly.

Really listen.

တကယ်နားထောင်ပါ။

‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’

'ငါ တံခါးနဲ့ နီးနေပြီမို့ ပိတ်လိုက်မယ်'

Now again, but slower.

အခုထပ်ပြောပေမယ့် ပိုနှေးတယ်။

‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’

'ငါ တံခါးနဲ့ နီးနေပြီမို့ ပိတ်လိုက်မယ်'

Okay let's see the sentence.

ကောင်းပြီ စာကြောင်းကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’

'ငါ တံခါးနဲ့ နီးနေပြီမို့ ပိတ်လိုက်မယ်'

What words go in these two gaps?

ဒီကွာဟချက်နှစ်ခုမှာ ဘယ်စကားလုံးတွေ ပါလဲ။

Any ideas?

Well the answer is -

You can see that they look the same,

ပေမယ့် ကွဲပြားတာကို ဆိုလိုတယ်လို့

but they mean different things.

သင်မြင်နိုင်ပါတယ် ။

Now, let's have a look at our two words.

ကဲ၊ ငါတို့ စကားလုံးနှစ်လုံးကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

We have ‘close’ and ‘close’.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် 'အနီးကပ်' နှင့် 'အနီးကပ်' ရှိသည်။

They are spelled in the same way,

၎င်းတို့ကို တူညီသောပုံစံဖြင့် စာလုံးပေါင်း

but they have different meanings

သော်လည်း အဓိပ္ပါယ်အမျိုးမျိုးရှိပြီး

and different pronunciation.

အသံထွက်ခြင်း မတူညီပါ။

It's what we call a heteronym.

What's a heteronym?

မျိုးရိုးလိုက်ခြင်းဆိုတာ ဘာလဲ?

Two words.

စကားနှစ်လုံး။

Same spelling.

စာလုံးပေါင်း အတူတူပါပဲ။

Different meaning.

အဓိပ္ပါယ်မတူဘူး။

Different pronunciation.

အသံထွက်ခြင်းမတူ။

Let's start with the meaning

ငါတို့ရဲ့ ပထမဆုံးစကားလုံးရဲ့

and pronunciation of our first word -

အဓိပ္ပါယ်နဲ့ အသံထွက်နဲ့ စလိုက်ရအောင်

‘close’

- 'ပိတ်'

‘close’ is an adjective.

'ပိတ်' သည် နာမဝိသေသနဖြစ်သည်။

It means that something is near to me.

ဆိုလိုသည်မှာ တစ်စုံတစ်ခုသည် ကျွန်ုပ်နှင့် နီးပါသည်။

I have two sentences to help show this.

ဒါကိုပြဖို့ ကျွန်တော့်မှာ စာကြောင်းနှစ်ကြောင်းရှိပါတယ်။

The first one,

ပထမတစ်ခုက

‘You're standing too close to me.’

'မင်းငါ့အနားမှာ ရပ်နေတယ်'

The person is too near.

လူက အရမ်းနီးတယ်။

They're taking up my room - my space.

သူတို့က ငါ့အခန်း- ငါ့နေရာ။

It's a physical distance.

၎င်းသည် ရုပ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာအကွာအဝေးတစ်ခုဖြစ်သည်။

You're too close to me.

မင်းက ငါနဲ့ အရမ်းရင်းနှီးတယ်။

The second sentence isn't a physical distance,

ဒုတိယဝါကျသည် ရုပ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာအကွာအဝေးမဟုတ်သော်လည်း

but an emotional one.

စိတ်ခံစားမှုတစ်ခုဖြစ်သည်။

‘My mother and I are very close.’

'အမေနဲ့ ကျွန်မ အရမ်းရင်းနှီးတယ်။'

My mother isn't here right now.

အမေက အခု ဒီမှာ မရှိဘူး။

We're not physically close,

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် ရုပ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာအရ မရင်းနှီးပါ၊

we're emotionally close.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့သည် စိတ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာအရ နီးစပ်ပါသည်။

We have a very good relationship.

ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် အလွန်ကောင်းသော ဆက်ဆံရေးရှိသည်။

။ 'ပိတ်'

‘close’ is a verb.

'ပိတ်' သည် ကြိယာတစ်ခုဖြစ်သည်။

An action word.

လုပ်ဆောင်ချက် စကားလုံး။

It means to shut.

ပိတ်ရန် ဆိုလိုသည်။

The opposite is to open.

ဆန့်ကျင်ဘက်ကတော့ ဖွင့်ဖို့ပါပဲ။

I have two sentences to show you this.

ဒါကို မင်းကိုပြဖို့ ငါ့မှာ စာကြောင်းနှစ်ကြောင်းရှိတယ်။

First one,

ပထမတစ်ခုက

‘Please close the window. I'm cold.’

'ကျေးဇူးပြု၍ ပြတင်းပေါက်ကိုပိတ်ပါ။ ကျွန်တော်အေးတယ်။'

I'm asking you to shut the window.

ပြတင်းပေါက်ပိတ်ခိုင်းတယ်။

Sentence number two -

နံပါတ် (၂) ဝါကျ -

‘I close my eyes before I sleep.’

'မအိပ်ခင် မျက်လုံးကို မှိတ်ထားတယ်။'

‘I close my eyes before I sleep.’

မအိပ်ခင် မျက်စိမှိတ်ထား။

Now let's have a look at pronunciation.

ကဲ အသံထွက်ကို ကြည့်ရအောင်။

Repeat after me.

ငါဆိုတာလိုက်ဆိုပါ။

‘close’

'ပိတ်'

‘close’

'ပိတ်'

Now let's have a look at our main sentence.

ယခု ကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ အဓိကဝါကျကို ကြည့်ကြပါစို့။

‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’

'ငါ တံခါးနဲ့ နီးနေပြီမို့ ငါပိတ်လိုက်မယ်'

We've looked at ‘close’ and ‘close’,

but let's not forget ‘I'm’ and ‘I’ll’.

ပေမယ့် 'ငါ' နဲ့ 'ငါ' ကို မမေ့ပါနဲ့။

I'll shut it.
