ನನ್ನ ಹೆಸರು ಫಿಯೋನಾ.

Today we're going to be looking at two words.

ಇಂದು ನಾವು ಎರಡು ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇವೆ.

These two words.

ಈ ಎರಡು ಪದಗಳು.

They look the same

ಅವು ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ

and they almost sound the same,

ಮತ್ತು ಅವು ಬಹುತೇಕ ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿ ಧ್ವನಿಸುತ್ತವೆ,

but they're different.

ಆದರೆ ಅವು ವಿಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿವೆ.

Let's get started.

First I'll say the sentence quickly.

ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ನಾನು ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ತ್ವರಿತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Really listen.

ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಕೇಳು.

‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’

'ನಾನು ಬಾಗಿಲಿನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚುತ್ತೇನೆ.'

Now again, but slower.

ಈಗ ಮತ್ತೆ, ಆದರೆ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ.

‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’

'ನಾನು ಬಾಗಿಲಿನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚುತ್ತೇನೆ.'

Okay let's see the sentence.

ಸರಿ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’

'ನಾನು ಬಾಗಿಲಿನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚುತ್ತೇನೆ.'

What words go in these two gaps?

ಈ ಎರಡು ಅಂತರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ಪದಗಳು ಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆ?

Any ideas?

ಯಾವುದೇ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಗಳು?

Well the answer is -

ಸರಿ ಉತ್ತರ -

‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’

'ನಾನು ಬಾಗಿಲಿನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾನು ಅದನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚುತ್ತೇನೆ.'

You can see that they look the same,

ಅವು ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ನೀವು ನೋಡಬಹುದು,

but they mean different things.

ಆದರೆ ಅವು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥೈಸುತ್ತವೆ.

Now, let's have a look at our two words.

ಈಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಎರಡು ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

We have ‘close’ and ‘close’.

ನಾವು 'ಹತ್ತಿರ' ಮತ್ತು 'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ' ಹೊಂದಿವೆ.

They are spelled in the same way,

ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ,

but they have different meanings

ಆದರೆ ಅವು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು

and different pronunciation.

ಮತ್ತು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಉಚ್ಚಾರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿವೆ

It's what we call a heteronym.

. ಅದನ್ನೇ ನಾವು ಹೆಟೆರೊನಿಮ್ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತೇವೆ.

What's a heteronym?

ಹೆಟೆರೊನಿಮ್ ಎಂದರೇನು?

Two words.

ಎರಡು ಪದಗಳು.

Same spelling.

ಅದೇ ಕಾಗುಣಿತ.

Different meaning.

ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಅರ್ಥ.

Different pronunciation.

ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಉಚ್ಚಾರಣೆ.

Let's start with the meaning

ನಮ್ಮ ಮೊದಲ ಪದದ

and pronunciation of our first word -

ಅರ್ಥ ಮತ್ತು ಉಚ್ಚಾರಣೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸೋಣ

‘close’

- 'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ'

‘close’ is an adjective.

'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ' ಎಂಬುದು ವಿಶೇಷಣವಾಗಿದೆ.

It means that something is near to me.

ನನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಏನೋ ಇದೆ ಎಂದರ್ಥ.

I have two sentences to help show this.

ಇದನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಲು ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ಎರಡು ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಿವೆ.

The first one,

ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು,

‘You're standing too close to me.’

'ನೀವು ನನಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದೀರಿ.'

The person is too near.

ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ತುಂಬಾ ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

They're taking up my room - my space.

ಅವರು ನನ್ನ ಕೋಣೆಯನ್ನು - ನನ್ನ ಜಾಗವನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

It's a physical distance.

ಅದೊಂದು ಭೌತಿಕ ಅಂತರ.

You're too close to me.

ನೀವು ನನಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗಿದ್ದೀರಿ.

The second sentence isn't a physical distance,

ಎರಡನೆಯ ವಾಕ್ಯವು ಭೌತಿಕ ಅಂತರವಲ್ಲ,

but an emotional one.

ಆದರೆ ಭಾವನಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿದೆ.

‘My mother and I are very close.’

'ನನ್ನ ತಾಯಿ ಮತ್ತು ನಾನು ತುಂಬಾ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ.'

My mother isn't here right now.

ನನ್ನ ತಾಯಿ ಈಗ ಇಲ್ಲ.

We're not physically close,

ನಾವು ದೈಹಿಕವಾಗಿ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗಿಲ್ಲ,

we're emotionally close.

ಭಾವನಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

We have a very good relationship.

ನಾವು ತುಂಬಾ ಉತ್ತಮ ಸಂಬಂಧವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Okay.

Let's practice pronunciation.

ಉಚ್ಚಾರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡೋಣ.

The word is ‘close’.

ಪದವು 'ಹತ್ತಿರ'.

Repeat after me.

ನನ್ನ ನಂತರ ಪುನರುಚ್ಛರಿಸು.

‘close’

'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ'

‘close’

'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ' ಈಗ

Now let's look at the meaning

ನಮ್ಮ ಎರಡನೇ ಪದದ

and pronunciation of our second word.

ಅರ್ಥ ಮತ್ತು ಉಚ್ಚಾರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ

‘close’

. 'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ'

‘close’ is a verb.

'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ' ಎಂಬುದು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ.

An action word.

ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ಪದ.

It means to shut.

ಮುಚ್ಚುವುದು ಎಂದರ್ಥ.

The opposite is to open.

ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ವಿರುದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ತೆರೆಯುವುದು.

I have two sentences to show you this.

ಇದನ್ನು ನಿಮಗೆ ತೋರಿಸಲು ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ಎರಡು ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಿವೆ.

First one,

ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು,

‘Please close the window. I'm cold.’

'ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ವಿಂಡೋವನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಿ. ನಾನು ತಣ್ಣಗಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ.'

I'm asking you to shut the window.

ಕಿಟಕಿಯನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಲು ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Sentence number two -

ವಾಕ್ಯ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಎರಡು -

‘I close my eyes before I sleep.’

'ನಾನು ಮಲಗುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಕಣ್ಣು ಮುಚ್ಚುತ್ತೇನೆ.'

‘I close my eyes before I sleep.’

'ನಾನು ಮಲಗುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಕಣ್ಣು ಮುಚ್ಚುತ್ತೇನೆ.'

Now let's have a look at pronunciation.

ಈಗ ಉಚ್ಚಾರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

Repeat after me.

ನನ್ನ ನಂತರ ಪುನರುಚ್ಛರಿಸು.

‘close’

'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ'

‘close’

'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ'

Now let's have a look at our main sentence.

ಈಗ ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಖ್ಯ ವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ.

‘I'm close to the door so I'll close it.’

'ನಾನು ಬಾಗಿಲಿನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇದ್ದೇನೆ ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚುತ್ತೇನೆ.'

We've looked at ‘close’ and ‘close’,

ನಾವು 'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ' ಮತ್ತು 'ಮುಚ್ಚಿ' ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ,

but let's not forget ‘I'm’ and ‘I’ll’.

ಆದರೆ 'ನಾನು' ಮತ್ತು 'ನಾನು' ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಮರೆಯಬಾರದು.

I'm close - I'm near to the door so I'll close it.

I'm gonna say it slowly to start
