So you'd just always test the limits.

You may have missed it, but I said, uh,

If someone tests the limits, it means that they see how much they

So the next night I stay up till four minutes past nine.

So the next night I really push the boat out and I stay up till ten past nine.

Then I get into trouble.

So, to test the limits is to see how far you can go before things change.

You weren't expelled, were you?

No, I was never expelled.

This means that you are permanently removed from a school or educational

setting because of bad behaviour.

So if you've done something very serious then you are asked to leave

Suspended, maybe three times.

To be suspended means to be asked to leave for a short period and this is a

What on earth did you do to get suspended for a whole week?

ماذا فعلت بحق السماء ليتم إيقافك عن العمل لمدة أسبوع كامل؟

And here I said,

وهنا قلت:

"What on earth did you do?"

"ماذا فعلت بحق السماء؟"

What on earth?

ماذا على الارض؟

Um, to add on earth into a question, like,

أم، لإضافة على وجه الأرض إلى سؤال، مثل،

"Who on earth?"

"من على وجه الأرض؟"

"What on earth?"

"ماذا على الارض؟"

"Where on earth?"

"حيث على الأرض؟"

"Why on earth?"

"لماذا على الأرض؟"

If you slide in 'on earth' after those W-questions, then you're

إذا انزلقت إلى "على الأرض" بعد أسئلة W هذه، فأنت

really exaggerating the fact that you're surprised or shocked by

تبالغ حقًا في حقيقة أنك متفاجئ أو مصدوم

what you are trying to understand.

بما تحاول فهمه.

If you are doing something that I think is crazy, I'd say,

إذا كنت تفعل شيئًا أعتقد أنه جنون، فسأقول:

"What on earth are you doing?"

"ماذا تفعل بحق السماء؟"

Or if you walk into my house and I don't know who you are, I'd look at you and say,

أو إذا دخلت منزلي ولا أعرف من أنت، سأنظر إليك وأقول،

"Who on earth are you?

"من أنت بحق السماء؟

And what on earth are you doing in my house?"

وماذا تفعل بحق السماء في منزلي؟"

So it adds meaning an additional level of shock or surprise to your question.

لذا فهو يضيف معنى مستوى إضافيًا من الصدمة أو المفاجأة لسؤالك.
