How does a sea snail catch a fish?

A more accurate way of thinking of venom

In my lab, we study the evolution of venom in these sea snails

One reason the venom product is so successful

Now a little about me,

Another reason that I'm obsessed with venom

is because of its duality.

When you inject the components of a venom arsenal into an organism,

it can kill or it can cure.

At a molecular level, several things can happen.

You saw one thing, paralysis in the fish.

Now that was happening because the toxins in the venom

Are there other things that I would like to use venom to attack?

And one of those is cancer.

Cancer tumors are cells.

And like all cells,

they communicate with themselves and their environment around them.

So we would like to find venom components

that are very good at disrupting how the tumor cells communicate.

Similar to how the venom disrupted how the fish cells communicated

In my lab, we study cancer as a channelopathy.

What this means is, basically, we're looking for venom components

that will target channels that are overexpressed in tumor cells

The cancer that we're most focused on right now

is liver cancer.

And that's because since the 1980s,

the death rate of liver cancer has doubled,

And then, when we took this compound and we injected it into mouse models

Basically, what we think is happening

is that the compound is blocking a specific channel,

that leads to downstream signaling

that enables the tumor to multiply and draw blood to itself.

What we're doing in studying the components of venom

to find treatments for human diseases and disorders,

it's what we call natural products drug discovery,

And I'll give you three examples.

The first is from killer snails, of course.

And so the first drug from these snails that is on the market

What the snails have done

is they've shown us a way to treat pain without the addiction,

From these snakes, we've derived a compound called captopril.

So when they bite into a large meal,

သူတို့အစားအများကြီးစားပြီဆိုတာနဲ့

they release things in their venom that lower blood sugar.

သွေထဲသကြားပါဝင်မှုကိုလျော့စေတဲ့အရာတွေကို သူတို့အဆိပ်ကထုတ်ပေးပါတယ်

So what's the drug that you think we found from the Gila monster?

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်မတို့ Gila monsters ဆီကနေ ရခဲ့တဲ့ဆေးက ဘာဆေးလို့ထင်လဲ

A compound that is used to lower the blood sugar in diabetic patients.

ဆီးချိုရောဂါသည်တွေအတွက် သွေးတွင်းသကြားပါဝင်မှုကို လျော့ပေးတဲ့ဆေးပါ

Now these are three marvelous examples,

but we've just scratched the surface.

There's so much more venom out there for us to study.

အဆိပ်တွေအများကြီး လေ့လာဖို့ကျန်သေးပါတယ်

In fact, we think that 15 percent of all the animals on the planet

စာရင်းအရတော့ ကမ္ဘာပေါ်ကတိရစ္ဆာန်တွေရဲ့ ၅ရာခိုင်နှုန်းဟာ

are venomous.

အဆိပ်ရှိမယ်လို့ထင်ပါတယ်

And I think this is a low estimate,

given the fact that we haven't surveyed all the animals on the planet.

But nature seems to have found something that she likes,

and she's repeated it over and over and over again,

leading to the vast array of animals that we see around us

တွေနေကျတိရစ္ဆာန်အမျိုးအစားတွေကိုပဲ သက်တမ်းတစ်လျှောက်လုံးမှာ

and all throughout the tree of life.

ပိုပိုပြီးတွေ့လာစေပါတယ်

So whether we're talking about my fave, killer snails,

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်မသဘောကျတဲ့ ဒီခရုတို့၊ ရေခူတို့

or jellyfish,

ဘဲတူဖျံတူတို့

or the larvae of butterflies and moths,

ခူကောင်တို့၊ slow lorisesတို့

or platypus or slow lorises,

စတဲ့ ကုန်းနေ၊ ရေနေ၊ လေနေတွေအကြောင်း

whether by sea, land or air,

ကျွန်မတို့ပြောကြတဲ့အခါ

you're sure to encounter a venomous creature.

ဒီအဆိပ်ရှိတဲ့ သတ္တဝါတွေကို ရင်ဆိုင်ရမှာသေချာပေါက်ပါပဲ

Remember when I told you

အဆိပ်က လူဆိုးလည်းဟုတ်တယ်

that venom can be both a superhero and a supervillain,

သူရဲကောင်းလဲဖြစ်တယ်လို့ ကျွန်မပြောခဲ့တာကို မှတ်မိလား

and you doubted me?

အဲဒီတုန်းကတော့ မယုံချင်ဘူးဟုတ်

Mhm.

အင်း

We're in a race to harness all of this venom goodness

ကမ္ဘာပေါ်ကတိရစ္ဆာန်မျိုးစိတ်တွေကို မဆုံးရှုံးလိုက်ရခင်

before we lose the vast majority of animals on our planet.

ဒီအဆိပ်ရဲ့ကောင်းကျိုးတွေကို ကောင်းကောင်းအသုံးချနိုင်ဖို့ လိုပါတယ်

It's a holistic process.

ဒါကလည်း ခြုံငုံလုပ်ရမယ့်ကိစ္စပါ

You can't have the therapeutic treatments without having the animals.

တိရစ္ဆာန်တွေရဲ့အကူအညီမပါဘဲနဲ့ ဒီရောဂါကုထုံးတွေကို မရရှိနိုင်ပါဘူး

And you can't have the animals

ပြီးတော့ ဒီဂေဟစနစ်တွေမရှိဘဲနဲ့

without having their ecosystems.

တိရစ္ဆာန်တွေ မရှိနိုင်ပါဘူး

So for me and the snails,

ကျွန်မနဲ့ ဒီခရုတွေအတွက်ကတော့

what it means is we have to save the oceans.

ဒါဟာ သမုဒ္ဒရာတွေကို ထိန်းသိမ်းရမယ်လို့ အဓိပ္ပါယ်ဆောင်ပါတယ်

And because venomous animals are found everywhere,

ပြီးတော့ ဒီအဆိပ်ရှိသတ္တဝါတွေက နေရာတိုင်းမှာရှိတော့

we basically have to save the planet.

ကမ္ဘာကြီးတစ်ခုလုံးကို ထိန်းသိမ်းရမှာပေါ့့

So do it for the venomous animals,

ဒီတော့ မင်းအတွက်မဟုတ်ရင်တောင်

if you don't want to do it for yourself.

ဒီတိရစ္ဆာန်တွေအတွက် ထိန်းသိမ်းပေးပါ

And who knows,

ဘယ်သူ သိမှာလဲ၊

some day, snail venom might just save your life.
