And that orange thing you see is kind of like a tongue.

We call it a proboscis.

It uses that to track and subdue this unsuspecting fish.

In this predator-prey interaction,

these are clearly not your garden variety escargots.

These are assassins of the sea.

And their weapon of choice is venom.

Venom, like the venom you find in venomous snakes and scorpions,

these sea snails, they use their venom to subdue fish, worms

and other snails.

And the venom of these snails,

it's not just one thing,

it's actually a cocktail of toxic molecules

that are packaged and delivered through a false tooth called a radula.

you might think that venom is dangerous and all bad.

Well, yes and no.

저희는 바다 달팽이들이 만들어 낸 이런 독을 좋은 쪽으로 연구합니다.

A more accurate way of thinking of venom

is to think of it as both a supervillain and a superhero.

불가능하게 들리기도 하고

약장수처럼 느껴질 수도 있어요.

In my lab, we study the evolution of venom in these sea snails

하지만 약 성분이 들어 있다면 약은 진짜입니다.

as a force for good.

독이 이렇게 성공적인 이유 중 하나는

Sounds like a stretch,

but actually,

while there are snakes involved, the product is legit.

One reason the venom product is so successful

is that it transforms a physical warfare into a biochemical one.

The chemistry of the toxins in your arsenal

And in our scenario, David is clearly the snail.

Another feature of venom that makes it so successful

is that the toxins work with the precision of a Swiss Army knife.

And so these toxins,

they come for strongholds that help an organism to function.

So they target blood, brain and membranes.

Whether it's snail venom or snake venom,

they each have components that can do things

like cause your blood to clot,

what we call "hemotoxic."

Or they cause neurons in your brains to not function normally,

Or they have toxins that will poke holes into the membranes of your cells,

causing them to rupture and, basically, explode,

what we call "cytotoxic."

Now, if that is not all powerful and all present,

Now a little about me,

and why I'm so obsessed with venom.

부모님께서 박물관을 일종의 육아 시설로 사용하셨기 때문이에요.

I grew up in New York City

with forced access to the Natural History Museum.

규칙이 두 개 있었죠.

아무도 잃어버리지 말 것.

I say "forced access,"

because I'm one of five kids,

5시 30분에 박물관이 문을 닫으면 아프리카 코끼리 앞으로 올 것.

and my parents used museums as a form of childcare.

완전히 자율적으로 보내던 그 날들은

There were two rules:

Don't lose anybody

and meet Mom and Dad at the African elephants

박물관을 여기저기 뛰어다니며 모험과 탐험으로 가득 차 있었어요.

at 5:30, when the museum closes.

Those totally unsupervised days running through the halls of the museum

그리고 저는 독을 연구할 때 그런 기분을 느껴요.

과학적 모험인 것이죠.

우리는 자연과 인류를 연결하는 이 개체를 용감하게 탐험하고 있는 거예요.

were full of adventure and exploration.

And that's how I feel when I'm studying venom.

제가 독을 정말 좋아하는 또 다른 이유는 이중성 때문입니다.

It's a scientific adventure.

We're boldly exploring this entity that connects nature and humanity.

독 저장고의 성분이 생물체 내로 들어가면

그게 생물을 죽일 수도 있고 살릴 수도 있거든요.

Another reason that I'm obsessed with venom

is because of its duality.

분자 수준에서 여러 가지 일들이 벌어질 수 있어요.

When you inject the components of a venom arsenal into an organism,

한 가지는 이미 보셨듯이, 물고기가 겪은 마비입니다.

it can kill or it can cure.

그런 일이 일어난 이유는 독 안의 독소가

At a molecular level, several things can happen.

물고기의 세포들이 서로 의사소통하는 것을 공격해서

You saw one thing, paralysis in the fish.

헤엄쳐 도망가는 것을 막았기 때문입니다.

독을 이용해서 공격하고 싶은 다른 것들이 있을까요?

Now that was happening because the toxins in the venom

were attacking how the fish's cells communicate with each other,

물론이죠.

그중 하나는 바로 암입니다.

preventing it from swimming away.

암 종양은 세포예요.

Are there other things that I would like to use venom to attack?

다른 세포와 마찬가지로 암세포들은 서로 소통하고 주변 환경과도 소통해요.

For sure.

And one of those is cancer.

그래서 그 종양 세포들이 소통하는 것을

Cancer tumors are cells.

매우 효과적으로 방해하는 독 성분을 찾고 싶습니다.

And like all cells,

they communicate with themselves and their environment around them.

독이 물고기의 세포들이 서로 소통하는 것을 방해해서

So we would like to find venom components

that are very good at disrupting how the tumor cells communicate.

물고기가 도망가지 못했던 것처럼요.

저희 연구소에서는 암을 채널병증으로 연구하고 있습니다.

Similar to how the venom disrupted how the fish cells communicated

즉, 기본적으로 통로를 목표로 하는 독 성분을 찾고 있다는 말입니다.

and the fish couldn't swim away.

In my lab, we study cancer as a channelopathy.

What this means is, basically, we're looking for venom components

현재 가장 집중하는 암은 간암입니다.

that will target channels that are overexpressed in tumor cells

왜냐하면 1980년대 이래로

간암의 사망률이 두 배나 뛰었고

versus normal cells.

The cancer that we're most focused on right now

미국에서 위협으로 부상하고 있기 때문입니다.

is liver cancer.

And that's because since the 1980s,

the death rate of liver cancer has doubled,

and it's an emerging threat in the US.

In a screen in which we had cervical,

neuroblastoma, prostate and liver cancer cells,

실험한 다른 암 세포들은 다 두고 오직 간암 세포만 말이죠.

we found a compound from a terebrid snail

이 성분을 간암 세포가 있는 실험쥐에 주사했더니

that seems to attack liver cancer cells,

and only liver cancer cells, and none of the others that were tested.

종양의 성장을 크게 억제하였습니다.

And then, when we took this compound and we injected it into mouse models

현재로서는 어떻게 된 일인지 확신할 수 없지만

that were expressing liver cancer cells,

it significantly inhibited the growth of the tumors.

We're not quite sure how this works yet,

we're still investigating the mechanism

and how we can make this compound more effective,

so you can't rush out to the pharmacy

Basically, what we think is happening

is that the compound is blocking a specific channel,

prohibiting the transmission of a specific chemical

that leads to downstream signaling

that enables the tumor to multiply and draw blood to itself.

천연 의약품 발견이라고 부르는데

What we're doing in studying the components of venom

수백 년 동안 전 세계의 여러 문화에 있었습니다.

to find treatments for human diseases and disorders,

is not new,

독은 우리에게 새롭고 멋진 성분을 줄 뿐만 아니라

it's what we call natural products drug discovery,

인간의 질병과 장애를 어떻게 치료할 것인지에 대해

and it's been happening for centuries,

새로운 생각의 길을 열어주기까지 하죠.

and in cultures all over the world.

Venoms are not only giving us cool new compounds,

예시를 세 가지 들어보겠습니다.

첫 번째는 당연히 청자고둥 독이죠.

but they're also giving us new ways of thinking

현재 출시된 최초의 달팽이 독 의약품은

about how we treat human diseases and disorders.

And I'll give you three examples.

지코노타이드 또는 프리알트라고 부르는 것입니다.

The first is from killer snails, of course.

면역결핍증이나 암 환자들의 만성 통증에 씁니다.

And so the first drug from these snails that is on the market

프리알트는 중독성이 없는 통증 치료제입니다.

is called ziconotide, or Prialt,

현재 통증을 어떻게 다루는지 생각하면 정말 마법 같은 제품이에요.

and it's used to treat chronic pain in HIV and cancer patients.

중독의 위험이 아주 큰 진통제를 사용하고 있거든요.

Prialt is a nonaddictive pain therapy.

모르핀이나 선호하는 마약성 진통제를 아무것이나 생각해 보세요.

Three magic words when you think about how we're treating pain currently.

달팽이가 통증을 치료할 수 있는 방법을 우리에게 알려준 거예요.

We're using things that have a huge cost of addiction.

중독성이 없는 것이요.

So think of morphine

or think of any of your favorite opioid out there.

정말 대단한 일이죠.

다음 예시는 브라질의 독사인 자라라카입니다.

What the snails have done

is they've shown us a way to treat pain without the addiction,

이 뱀에서 캡토프릴이라는 성분을 추출할 수 있었어요.

which is huge.

캡토프릴은 고혈압 치료에 사용되며

The next example comes from the Brazilian pit viper.

혁신 신약이라고 불립니다.

From these snakes, we've derived a compound called captopril.

그 자체로 혁신적이기도 하지만

Captopril is used to treat high blood pressure,

한 약품군 전체를 발전시켰기 때문입니다.

and captopril is a breakthrough drug.

ACE 억제제로 알려진 이 약품군은

고혈압과 심부전 치료에 가장 흔하게 처방되는 약품군입니다.

But not only in and of itself,

but because it advanced a whole class of drugs,

마지막 예시는 힐라 몬스터라고 하는 아메리카독도마뱀이에요.

what we know as ACE inhibitors,

which are the most commonly [prescribed] for treating hypertension

이 경우는 이런 생물의 생태를 이해하고

효과적인 의약품 발견 단계로 연결한

and heart failure.

The last example is from the Gila monster.

정말 흥미로운 예시라고 할 수 있어요.

힐라 몬스터는 폭식을 합니다.

And this is a really exciting example of understanding the ecology

그래서 이 도마뱀이 커다란 먹이를 물면

of these organisms,

독에 혈당을 낮추는 물질을 풀어요.

and pairing it with efficient drug discovery.

그럼 이 힐라 몬스터로부터 찾아낸 약품은 과연 무엇일까요?

And Gila monsters are binge eaters.

So when they bite into a large meal,

바로 당뇨병 환자들의 혈당을 낮추는 데 쓰이는 성분이었죠.

they release things in their venom that lower blood sugar.

So what's the drug that you think we found from the Gila monster?

이건 정말 경이로운 세 가지의 예시지만

사실 빙산의 일각이에요.

A compound that is used to lower the blood sugar in diabetic patients.

연구할 독이 아직도 정말 많습니다.

사실 지구에 있는 모든 동물들 중에 15%가 독이 있다고 추정하고 있어요.

Now these are three marvelous examples,

but we've just scratched the surface.

모든 동물을 조사하지는 않았으니 낮게 잡은 추산이라고 생각해요.

There's so much more venom out there for us to study.

In fact, we think that 15 percent of all the animals on the planet

그런데 자연은 생물이 진화하는 것을 좋아하는 것 같고

are venomous.

And I think this is a low estimate,

그 진화는 계속해서 몇 번이고 반복되어 오면서

given the fact that we haven't surveyed all the animals on the planet.

생명의 나무를 따라 쭉 내려와 결국엔 우리 주변에 이르기까지

But nature seems to have found something that she likes,

엄청나게 많은 동물들이 생겨났잖아요.

and she's repeated it over and over and over again,

그러니 제가 가장 좋아하는 청자고둥에 대해서 얘기하든지

leading to the vast array of animals that we see around us

아니면 해파리나 나비와 나방의 유충이나

and all throughout the tree of life.

오리너구리, 늘보 로리스에 대해 얘기하든지

So whether we're talking about my fave, killer snails,

바다나 육지, 하늘 어디에서든

or jellyfish,

or the larvae of butterflies and moths,

독을 가진 생물을 만날 수밖에 없어요.

or platypus or slow lorises,

제가 여러분께 독이라는 게

영웅인 동시에 악당이 될 수 있다고 말씀드렸을 때

whether by sea, land or air,

you're sure to encounter a venomous creature.

저를 의심하셨었죠?

Remember when I told you

우리는 지금 동물들 대부분을 잃기 전에

that venom can be both a superhero and a supervillain,

이로운 모든 독을 활용하기 위해 정신없이 일하는 중이에요.

and you doubted me?

과정은 전체적입니다.

Mhm.

We're in a race to harness all of this venom goodness

동물들 없이는 치료제를 만들 수 없죠.

before we lose the vast majority of animals on our planet.

동물들이 살아가는 생태계 없이는 동물들도 없고요.

It's a holistic process.

You can't have the therapeutic treatments without having the animals.

따라서 저와 달팽이에게 이 말은 바다를 살려야 한다는 의미예요.

그리고 독을 가진 다른 동물들이 어디에나 살고 있으니

And you can't have the animals

without having their ecosystems.

결국 지구 전체를 살려야 하는 거죠.

So for me and the snails,

그러니 자신을 위해서 하기는 싫다면 이 독 있는 동물들을 위해 보호하세요.

what it means is we have to save the oceans.

혹시 누가 알겠어요.

And because venomous animals are found everywhere,

언젠가 달팽이 독이 여러분의 목숨을 구할지도요.

we basically have to save the planet.

So do it for the venomous animals,
