Hello.

지구입니다.

I'm sure by the time I get to end of this sentence,

지구는 참 좋은 곳이에요.

우리의 보금자리죠.

given how I talk,

you'll all have figured out that I'm from a place called

세균들도 같이 살고요.

그 [삐-]들 이야기는 잠깐 넣어둘게요.

planet Earth.

이 녀석들 말고도 신경 쓸 일이 너무 많으니까요.

Earth is pretty great.

It's home to us.

지구에는 참 많은 것들이 있는데 자동차, 방울 양배추,

And germs.

머리에 호롱불 달고 다니는 이상한 물고기,

Those [blip] take a back seat for the time being,

because believe it or not, they're not the only thing going on.

예술, 불,

소화기,

This planet is also home to cars, brussels sprouts;

법, 비둘기, 병맥주,

레몬과 전구,

those weird fish things that have their own headlights;

피노 누아르, 두통약,

유령, 모기, 홍학, 꽃,

art, fire,

fire extinguishers,

laws, pigeons, bottles of beer,

우쿨렐레, 승강기, 고양이,

고양이 비디오, 인터넷,

lemons and light bulbs;

철근, 건물과 건전지,

Pinot noir and paracetamol;

온갖 영리한 꾀와 갖가지 생물들...

ghosts, mosquitoes, flamingos, flowers,

그 외에도 정말 많은 것들이 있어요.

the ukulele, elevators and cats,

우리가 알고 있는 거의 모든 것이 여기에 있죠.

cat videos, the internet;

iron beams, buildings and batteries,

세상에서 제가 제일 좋아하는 곳이요.

all ingenuity and bright ideas, all known life ...

체이 조그만 구체,

and a whole bunch of other stuff.

춥고 외로운 우주를 떠다니는 공이요.

Pretty much everything we know and ever heard of.

아, 참고로 이건 벨파스트 억양입니다. 어디냐면...

It's my favorite place, actually.

여기요.

This small orb,

floating in a cold and lonely part of the cosmos.

대략 이 근처예요.

지구를 잘 아신다고 생각하시죠?

Oh, the accent is from Belfast, by the way, which is ...

여기 살고 계시니까요.

하지만 아마도

here.

한동안 기본을 간과하고 계셨을 거예요.

Roughly.

You may think you know this planet Earth,

저도 잘 안다 생각했죠.

심지어는 전문가를 자처했어요.

하지만 지구에 처음 온 사람에게 지구를 낱낱이 설명해야 할 일이 생기자

as you're from here.

But chances are,

you probably haven't thought about the basics in a while.

제가 모르는 게 많다는 걸 깨달았죠.

I thought I knew it.

Thought I was an expert, even.

예상하시는 이야기는 아니에요.

Until, that is, I had to explain the entire place,

물론, 아버지가 말씀하시길

지능이 높은 외계인은 분명히 존재한다,

and how it's supposed to work,

to someone who had never been here before.

우리를 모른 체 한다는 게 그 증거다 ...라고 하긴 하셨죠.

Not what you might think,

사실은 제 갓난 아들에게 지구를 설명해야 했어요.

although my dad always did say

저나 제 부인이나

the sure sign of intelligent life out there

부모 노릇은 처음이라

is that they haven't bothered trying to contact us.

집에 처음 온 손님처럼 아들을 대하기로 했어요.

It was actually my newborn son I was trying to explain things to.

집들이를 시켜줬죠.

여기가 네가 사는 집이란다.

We'd never been parents before,

my wife and I,

여기는 음식을 만드는 곳이고,

여기는 의자를 모아 두는 곳이란다, 이런 식으로요.

and so treated him like most guests when he arrived home for the first time,

by giving him the tour.

신선했어요.

0 살배기에게 지구를 설명하는 게요.

This is where you live, son.

This room is where we make food at.

하지만 웃음이 잦아들고 난 뒤,

This is the room we keep our collection of chairs, and so on.

갓 태어난 인간이 얼마나 모르는 것이 많은가,

It's refreshing,

또 나는 얼마나 모르는 게 많은가 깨달을 때 즈음

explaining how our planet works to a zero-year-old.

온 세상을 설명해야 한다는 두려움이 밀려오기 시작했어요.

But after the laughs,

and once the magnitude that new humans know absolutely nothing

그래도 열심히 해봤죠.

처음 몇 주 아이와 산책하며

settles on you and how little you know either,

세상을 보이는대로 해설했어요.

explaining the whole planet becomes quite intimidating.

제 입에서 나오는 우스꽝스러운 말들을 받아 적기 시작했죠.

But I tried anyway.

As I walked around those first few weeks,

짧은 메모가 모여서 아이가 크면 읽어줄 편지가 됐고

narrating the world as I saw it,

편지가 모여서 책이 됐어요.

I began to take notes of the ridiculous things I was saying.

21세기 지구에서 인간으로 산다는 것, 그 기본을 담은 책이요.

The notes slowly morphed into a letter

intended for my son once he learned to read.

설명하기 쉬운 것도 있죠.

And that letter became a book

about the basic principles of what it is to be a human

예를 들면, 지구 표면은 두 부분으로 나뉜다.

육지와 바다.

living on Earth in the 21st century.

곰곰이 생각해보지 않으면 설명하기 어려운 것들도 있어요.

Some things are really obvious.

시간처럼요.

Like, the planet is made of two parts:

지구에선 시간이 천천히 흐를 때도 있다.

land and sea.

Some less obvious until you think about them.

하지만 보통 시간은 빠르게 지나간다.

Like, time.

눈 깜짝하는 사이에 사라져 버리니 시간은 지혜롭게 써야 한다.

Things can sometimes move slowly here on Earth.

사람도 어렵죠.

사람은 각기 천차만별이다.

But more often, they move quickly.

So use your time well, it will be gone before you know it.

각자 모습도 다르고,

몸짓도 목소리도 다르지만,

Or people.

잊지 마라.

우리는 모두 사람이다.

People come in all different shapes, sizes and colors.

이 드넓은 우주 속에서 오로지 지구에만 사람이 산다는 점,

We may all look different,

지구가 아니면 살 수 없다는 점을 무시할 수 없습니다.

act different and sound different,

but don't be fooled.

지구에서도 흙 위에서만 살 수 있죠.

We are all people.

It doesn't skip me that of all the places in the universe,

지구의 면적 중 사람이 살 수 있는 곳은

people only live on Earth,

극히 일부예요.

can only live on Earth.

그 좁은 땅에 다 같이 촘촘히 모여 사는 겁니다.

And even then, only on some of the dry bits.

땅 위의 바위, 풀, 콘크리트에 가까이 붙어 살다 보면

There's only a very small part of the surface of our planet

that is actually habitable to human life,

and squeezed in here is where all of us live.

발 뻗을 공간이 얼마나 좁은지 잊기 쉽습니다.

It's easy to forget when you're up close to the dirt,

육지에 선 사람의 눈에는

지평선이 끝없이 펼쳐진 것처럼 보이죠.

the rocks, the foliage, the concrete of our lands,

just how limited the room for maneuvering is.

지구라는 천체 위 우리가 어디에 있는가,

그 천체는 우주 어디에 있는가 사색하는 건

From a set of eyes close to the ground,

일상적 습관이 아닐테니까요.

the horizon feels like it goes forever.

아일랜드 북부에서 자라며 배운 국경에 대한 개념도,

After all, it's not an every-day ritual

우리는 그저 작은 구역이며

to consider where we are on the ball of our planet

바깥 일은 관여하지 않는다는 태도도

and where that ball is in space.

아들에게 똑같이 전하고 싶지 않았습니다.

I didn't want to tell my son the same story of countries

우리 지구를 우주에 떠 다니는

that we were told where I was growing up in Northern Ireland.

That we were from just a small parish,

한 세상, 한 개체로 볼 수 있다면 어떨까 느껴보고 싶었어요.

which ignores life outside its immediate concerns.

그래서,

I wanted to try to feel what it was like to see our planet

책에 들어가는 그림을 그리는 대신

거리에 전시할 입체 모형을 만들고,

as one system, as a single object,

60m의 길이를 가진

hanging in space.

뉴욕 의 도시 한 블록,

To do this,

대형 달 모형,

I would need to switch from flat drawings for books

우리가 사는 지구 모형이 필요했죠.

to 3D sculpture for the street,

이 프로젝트는 뉴욕 시 하이 라인 공원에서

and I'd need almost 200 feet,

a New York City block,

지난 겨울,

to build a large-scale model of the moon,

아폴로 11호의 달 착륙 50주년을 맞아 진행 됐습니다.

the Earth and us.

조각이 설치된 후,

This project managed to take place on New York City's High Line park

아들과 함께 우주복 헬멧을 쓰고

반 세기 전 아폴로 11호처럼

last winter,

on the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11's mission around the Moon.

달을 향해 날아올랐습니다.

After its installation,

달을 한 바퀴 둘러

I was able to put on a space helmet with my son

지구를 돌아보았죠.

and launch, like Apollo 11 did half a century ago,

그리고 느꼈습니다.

그 어둠 속이 얼마나 외로운지.

towards the Moon.

진짜 우주로 간 것도 아닌데요.

We circled around

and looked back at us.

지구 근처의 유일한 물체는 머나먼 달 뿐입니다.

What I felt was

지구를 지름 3m로 줄인

how lonely it was there in the dark.

이 프로젝트의 비율을 따르자면

And I was just pretending.

우리 다음 행성인 화성은 요가 공 정도 크기로

The Moon is the only object

even remotely close to us.

몇 km 떨어진 곳에 있겠지요.

And at the scale of this project,

우주에서는 국경을 볼 수 없지만,

where our planet was 10 feet in diameter,

제 모형에는

Mars, the next planet, will be the size of a yoga ball

국경을 전부 그려넣었어요.

and a couple of miles away.

하지만 쪼개진 땅 위에 나라 이름을 쓰는 대신,

Although borders are not visible from space,

반복해서 썼습니다.

on my sculpture,

“여기 사람이 산다, 여기 사람이 산다”

every single border was drawn in.

“여기 사람이 산다”

But rather than writing the country names on the carved-up land,

저 멀리 달에는 이렇게 썼습니다.

I wrote over and over again,

“여기 아무도 없다”

"people live here, people live here."

종종 우리는 당연한 것들을 무심히 놓치곤 합니다.

"People live here."

And off on the Moon, it was written,

무엇이든 멀리서 보면

"No one lives here."

모든 게 달라집니다.

Often, the obvious things

많은 우주인들이 직접 경험했죠.

aren't all that obvious until you think about them.

그런데 인간의 눈은 달 보다 먼 곳에서 지구를 본 적이 없어요.

Seeing anything from a vast enough distance

태양계의 가장자리는

changes everything,

as many astronauts have experienced.

이보다 훨씬 더 멀고,

And human eyes have only ever seen our Earth

다른 별과 별자리들은 더더욱 먼 곳에 있지요.

from as far as the Moon, really.

우주 전체를 아울러서 딱 한 곳,

It's quite a ways further

before we get to the edges of our own Solar System.

모든 별자리와 연결된 곳이 있답니다.

And even out to other stars, to the constellations.

그 곳이 바로

There is actually only one point in the entire cosmos

여기 지구입니다.

우리가 별을 꿰어 만든 갖가지 형상들은

that is present in all constellations of stars,

지구에 있는 사람 시점이 아니면 보이지 않습니다.

and that presence is

here, planet Earth.

별자리에 엮인 이야기들은 지구에서만 쓸 수 있고,

Those pictures we have made up for the clusters of stars

우리에게만 의미가 있는 거죠.

only make sense from this point of view down here.

사람들에게만요.

사람은 이야기하는 생물입니다.

Their stories only make sense here on Earth.

우리가 전하는 이야기가

And only something to us.

우리가 듣는 이야기가 우리를 만듭니다.

지구의 인간 문명 이야기를 잠시 돌아보세요.

To people.

We are creatures of stories.

영리함과 아름다움의 이야기,

We are the stories we tell,

we're the stories we're told.

나누고 보듬는 본성을 가진 생물이

Consider briefly the story of human civilization on Earth.

다른 한편으로는 자기중심적이고 불완전하며,

고난을 무릅쓰고 소중한 걸 지키는 이야기.

It tells of the ingenuity, elegance,

우리는 사람의 뜻으로 어찌할 수 없는 미지의 세계의 풍파로부터

generous and nurturing nature of a species

that is also self-focused, vulnerable

등잔불처럼 위태한 생존의 불꽃을 지켜왔습니다.

and defiantly protective.

하지만 항상 그 불꽃에서 의미를 찾죠.

We, the people, shield the flame of our existence

from the raw, vast elements outside our control,

“우리가 아는 한”

이 말은 우리가 가진 지식을 모두 합친 것을 이릅니다.

the great beyond.

Yet it is always to the flame we look.

하지만 달리 해석하면,

“우리가 아는 한”

"For all we know,"

우리가 모르는 게 많음을 지적합니다.

when said as a statement,

it means the sum total of all knowledge.

이것이 아름답고 위태로운 문명의 희곡입니다.

But when said another way,

"for all we know,"

우리는 우주의 무대에 오른 배우이자 청중입니다.

it means that we do not know at all.

우리에겐 이 무대가 전부이지만

This is the beautiful, fragile drama of civilization.

지구 밖에서는 아무 의미가 없지요.

어쩌면 지구에서도 별 의미가 없을지도 모르고요.

We are the actors and spectators of a cosmic play

우리가 함께 탄 지구라는 배와 우리의 관계를 솔직하게 돌아보면,

that means the world to us here,

but means nothing anywhere else.

무지와 탐욕에 관한 이야기일지도 모릅니다.

Possibly not even that much down here, either.

파우스토 이야기처럼요.

If we truly thought about our relationship with our boat,

파우스토는 만물이 자신의 것이라 생각해

with our Earth,

자기 소유물을 둘러보러 여행을 떠났죠.

it might be more of a story of ignorance and greed.

간단히 꽃의 소유권을 얻고,

As is the case with Fausto,

양, 나무와 밭도 손에 넣습니다.

a man who believed he owned everything

호수와 산은 조금 더 정복하기 힘들었지만,

and set out to survey what was his.

결국은 굴복시킵니다.

He easily claims ownership of a flower,

바다를 차지하러 떠났을 때,

a sheep, a tree and a field.

마침내 파우스토는 탐욕의 대가를 치릅니다.

The lake and the mountain prove harder to conquer,

자만심에 찬 파우스토는

but they, too, surrender.

바다에게 혼쭐을 내주려 배에서 뛰어내렸어요.

It is in trying to own the open sea

파도에 삼켜져

where his greed proves his undoing,

물 속에 가라앉을 줄도 모르고요.

when, in a fit of arrogance,

he climbs overboard to show that sea who is boss.

바다는 슬퍼했지만

그저 바다로 계속 살아갈 뿐이었죠.

But he does not understand,

slips beneath the waves, sinks to the bottom.

파우스토의 다른 소유물도 마찬가지였습니다.

파우스토의 죽음은 그들에게는 상관이 없었습니다.

The sea was sad for him

but carried on being the sea.

이 우주에서 우리가 얼마나 중요한 존재라고 여기든

As do all the other objects of his ownership,

지구가 없다면

for the fate of Fausto does not matter to them.

우리에겐 아무것도 없습니다.

반면, 우리가 없다고 해도

For all the importance in the cosmos we believe we hold,

지구는 아무 일 없는 듯 계속 돌겠죠.

이 지구는 사람이 사는 곳입니다.

we'd have nothing

if not for this Earth.

하루하루 살아가며

While it would keep happily spinning,

가끔은 바깥 세상을 올려다보기도 하지만

obliviously without us.

대부분의 시간은 가까운 곳을 내려다 보며 지냅니다.

On this planet, there are people.

우리는 하늘을 올려다보고 반짝이는 빛 사이로 선을 이어가며

We have gone about our days,

sometimes we look up and out,

이 세상의 혼돈을 이해하려 애썼지요.

mostly we look down and in.

우리는 땅을 내려다보고 선을 그으며

Looking up and by drawing lines between the lights in the sky,

누가 동지이고 누가 아닌지 구분했습니다.

we've attempted to make sense out of chaos.

별들을 잇고 땅을 가르는 이 선들이

우리 머릿속에만 존재한다는 건 대개 잊어버립니다.

Looking down, we've drawn lines across the land to know where we belong

and where we don't.

이 선들도 이야기예요.

We do mostly forget that these lines that connect the stars

우리의 일상생활과 일과는

and those lines that divide the land

우리가 믿는 이야기들이 결정합니다.

live only in our heads.

그리고 요즘은 이야기가 쓰이는 동시에 변하고 있습니다.

They, too, are stories.

우리 시대의 이야기에는 공포가 가득합니다.

We carry out our everyday routines and rituals

얼마 전까지만 해도 사람들을 가장 사로잡는 이야기는

according to the stories we most believe in,

씁쓸한 이야기들,

and these days, the story is changing as we write it.

개개인도 사회도 전부 잘못되어 간다는 이야기였던 것 같아요.

There is a lot of fear in this current story,

이런 힘든 상황일수록 더욱 강해지는 우리를 보며 많은 힘을 받았습니다.

and until recently,

the stories that seemed to have the most power

전세계를 휩쓰는 위기에 마주해

are those of bitterness,

of how it had all gone wrong for us individually and collectively.

우리 사이의 연결 고리가 우리가 가진 가장 소중한 보물이라는 걸

It has been inspiring to watch how the best comes from the worst.

함께 깨닫는 모습이요.

How people are waking up in this time of global reckoning

하지만 생각해 보면,

우리는 한숨만 많이 쉬고

to the realization that our connections with each other

최고로 잘 된 일 한 가지를 기뻐하는 데는

are some of the most important things we have.

시간을 별로 할애하지 않아요.

But stepping back.

애초에 우리가 존재한다는 것.

우리가 어떻게든 살아있다는 것.

For all we've had to lament,

we spend very little time relishing the single biggest thing

아직도 살아있다는 것.

성냥갑을 손에 쥐고 천 년 만 년을 보냈는데

that has ever gone right for us.

집을 아직 몽땅 태우지 않았다고요.

That we are here in the first place,

that we are alive at all.

아직은요.

That we are still alive.

이곳에 우리가 존재할 확률은 거의 없는 거나 마찬가지예요.

A million and a half years after finding a box of matches,

그런데도 우리는 존재합니다.

위험과 모든 것이 있어요.

we haven't totally burned the house down.

지구에는 그 어느 때보다 많은 사람이 삽니다.

Yet.

그만큼 많은 것을 소비하고요.

The chances of being here are infinitesimal.

오래 전에 만든 규칙과 방식들의 상당수가

Yet here we are.

지금의 상황에는 분명히

Perils and all.

There have never been more people living on Earth.

맞지 않습니다.

새 규칙을 만들어야 해요.

Using more stuff.

세균을 버텨낸다 해도

And it's become obvious that many of the old systems

머지 않아 우리가 때는 불에 우리가 질식하고 말 거예요.

we invented for ourselves

are obsolete.

산업의 수레바퀴가 멈춰 서고

And we have to build new ones.

기술 발전의 기계 소리가 숨죽이는 지금

If it wasn't germs,

our collective fire might suffocate us before long.

어마어마한 기회가 우리 손 안에 있습니다.

처음부터 다시 시작할 기회.

As we watch the wheels of industry grind to a halt,

다른 길을 갈 기회.

the machinery of progress become silent,

우리는 지구에 삽니다.

we have the wildest of opportunities

지구에 산다는 건 멋진 일이에요.

to hit the reset button.

지구는 큰 것 같지만

우리의 수가 정말 많아요.

To take a different path.

Here we are on Earth.

저번에 세어 보기로 70억 5천만 명이었는데

And life on Earth is a wonderful thing.

매일 그 수가 늘어나고 있죠.

It looks big, this Earth,

그럼에도 불구하고

but there are lots of us on here.

모두가 충분히 함께 살 수 있어요.

Seven and a half billion at last count,

조금씩만 나누면요.

with more showing up every day.

그러니 부디

착하게 지내세요.

Even so,

there is still enough for everyone,

달리 생각해보면

if we all share a little.

지구는 사람이 사는 유일한 곳이니

우주에서 가장 외롭지 않은 곳이랍니다.

So please,

be kind.

사랑 받을 사람들로 가득하고

When you think of it another way,

if Earth is the only place where people live,

사랑해 줄 사람들로 가득합니다.

it's actually the least lonely place in the universe.

우리는 서로가 필요합니다.

그 어느 때보다 잘 아시리라 믿습니다.

There are plenty of people to be loved by

좋은 밤 되세요.

and plenty of people to love.

We need each other.

We know that now, more than ever.
