I often get this question:

And as you can see, it's not that it doesn't exist.

Digital fashion is real, and it exists in so many virtual universes,

ranging from basic social networks

to fully developed virtual worlds known as the metaverse,

메타버스 같이 완전한 가상세계에서도

letting people express themselves in a way not possible before.

기존과는 다른 방법으로 자신을 표현할 수 있습니다.

I’ve been playing video games since I [can] remember,

저는 어릴 때 비디오 게임을 하며

dressing up my game character.

게임 캐릭터에 옷을 입히면서 놀았어요.

Actually, I enjoyed it more than dressing up myself.

제 옷을 입는 것보다도 더 재밌어 했죠.

Five years ago, I was running a physical fashion brand.

5년 전에 저는 패션 브랜드를 운영했습니다.

But because of my gaming experience,

게임을 할 때의 경험을 떠올려 줄곧 이런 생각이 들었죠.

I kept thinking:

“How and why could people wear digital garments?”

“어떻게, 왜, 사람들이 디지털 의상을 입게 됐을까?”

And there was a reason I believed they would.

그리고 이유를 찾았죠.

In 2016, I did research on “hypebeast culture.”

2016년에 하입비스트 문화에 대해 연구해 보았습니다.

You know, those people buying and selling garments

항상 유행하는 옷만 사고 파는 그런 사람들의 문화를 말하죠.

that are always sold out.

As part of this research,

연구의 일부로서,

I've joined various Facebook groups where they were gathering.

관련된 여러 페이스북 그룹에 가입을 해봤습니다.

What I noticed was they were usually buying those pieces

그때 알게 된 건, 그들이 그런 옷을 사는 이유는

just to post a photo of themselves wearing it on their social channels.

단지 그 옷을 입은 사진을 SNS에 과시하기 위한 거였어요.

And later on, they would resell it.

그 다음에는 옷을 다시 팝니다.

So they didn't need or want the actual garment.

사실 그들은 그 옷이 필요 없어요.

They wanted its image, and that image was being used online.

원하는 건 인터넷에 올릴 사진뿐이죠.

And it made sense to me,

그제서야 이해가 됐습니다.

because, like most of my generation,

저희 세대 아이들 대부분은

they had their friends, peers, role models in the virtual space,

가상공간 속에서 또래 친구들이나 롤모델을 찾고

and this is where we care to express ourselves.

그 공간이 바로 자신을 표현하는 곳인 거죠.

This is when I started experimenting

그때 시작한 실험이

with what today we know as digital fashion.

오늘날 잘 알려진 ‘디지털 패션’입니다.

Now I run the world's first direct-to-consumer digital fashion brand

지금 저는 세계 최초로 소비자 직판용 디지털 패션 브랜드와

and a fashion tech house.

패션 기술 하우스를 운영 중입니다.

We officially started last year,

공식적으로 작년부터 시작했고요.

and our growth has been unimaginable from a traditional fashion perspective.

기존 패션의 관점에서는 상상하기 힘들 만큼 성장하고 있습니다.

Apart from doing our own designs,

저희가 직접 디자인 하는 것 외에도

we regularly collaborate with the biggest names from the industry.

업계에서 잘 알려진 분들과 주기적으로 협업합니다.

With Carolina Herrera, we collaborated on a runway dress

캐롤라이나 헤레라와는 패션쇼 드레스를 공동 제작했고,

and developed an app

핸드폰 앱을 개발하여

where you can wear the dress on your phone using augmented reality.

증강현실 속에서 그 옷을 입어볼 수 있도록 했죠.

And with Jean Paul Gaultier,

장 폴 고티에와는

we collaborated on a piece that was part of their couture collection.

꾸뛰르 컬렉션의 일부를 공동 제작하기도 했습니다.

We even have our flagship store in the Decentraland,

저희는 ‘디센트라랜드’에 본점을 두고 있는데요.

a metaverse owned and created by its users.

이용자들이 직접 제작 운영하는 메타버스 공간입니다.

And we are not the only ones.

저희 말고도 많이 있습니다.

For example, on Demat, an NFT marketplace,

fashion brands are selling authenticated digital fashion items

인증된 디지털 패션 아이템을 판매하는 패션 브랜드도 있습니다.

that are usually sold out as soon as they are released.

대부분 출시되자마자 품절될 정도죠.

And as it was for me,

저에게 그랬듯이,

the games are becoming a gateway to digital fashion for many.

게임은 디지털 패션으로 이끄는 문이 되어줍니다.

The biggest names in the luxury segment are eagerly trying to enter this space.

명품시장의 큰손들이 게임시장에 들어가려 애쓰고 있죠.

Balenciaga has collaborated with Fortnite,

발렌시아가는 게임 포트나이트와 협업했고,

and Gucci bag was sold inside Roblox for more than its worth in real life.

구찌 가방은 로블록스 게임 속에서 실물보다 더 비싼 값에 팔렸습니다.

Fortnite itself has sold more than two billion worth of skins and game extras

포트나이트는 게임 캐릭터의 추가 의상 아이템이나 스킨 판매로

for in-game character dressing.

20억불 이상의 메출을 올렸습니다.

But it's a misconception that creating digital fashion is quick and easy.

디지털 패션을 만드는 게 빠르고 쉽다는 건 오해입니다.

We often have to play by the same rules as in real-life physical fashion.

현실 세계의 패션과 똑같은 과정을 따라야 할 때가 있습니다.

Think back to a time when there were no computers

컴퓨터가 없었던 시절과

and people were making posters by hand.

포스터를 손수 그려야 했던 시절을 생각해보세요.

When the software like Adobe Photoshop finally arrived,

어도비가 포토샵을 처음 세상에 내놓았을 때,

they thought making posters is going to be so much quicker and easier.

그들은 포스터를 훨씬 빠르고 쉽게 제작할 수 있을 거라 생각했죠.

But obviously that wasn't true

하지만 절대 그렇지 않습니다.

because technology just replaced outdated principles with new possibilities.

왜냐하면 기술은 옛 것을 새로운 가능성으로 바꿔줄 뿐이니까요.

So instead of doing most of the development in the physical space,

그래서 저희는 현실세계에서 열심히 개발하는 대신

we do it in front of our screens.

모니터 속의 세계에서 합니다.

The process is the same, just the tools are different.

과정은 같지만 그 수단은 전혀 다르죠.

And in the end,

결국 모든 것은 작품이나 컨셉의 복잡성에 달렸습니다.

everything falls back to a complexity of a piece or a concept.

For example,

there's a huge difference in creating a basic T-shirt

표현의 매개와 상관없이 일반 티셔츠를 만드는 것과

or a couture-like dress, regardless of the medium.

꾸뛰르 급의 드레스를 만드는 데는 큰 차이가 있는 것 처럼요.

And the digital realm somehow forces you to go into that exploratory direction.

디지털 영역은 여러분을 미지의 영역으로 가게 만듭니다.

Because do you even need a physical T-shirt in a virtual space?

왜냐면 가상 세계 속에서도 실제 티셔츠가 필요하기 때문이죠.

With digital fashion, you can experience fashion in its purest form,

디지털 패션은 그 자체의 가장 순수한 형태를 표현할 수 있습니다.

devoid of functional barriers.

실용성은 전혀 상관없죠.

You don't need your sleeves there.

가상세계에서 소매는 필요 없죠.

You don't even need your hands.

심지어 손조차 없어도 되죠.

Digital fashion is not an alternative but an evolutionary step.

디지털 패션은 대체품이 아니라 진화의 단계입니다.

And we are currently at the beginning of this new era.

그리고 이제 우리는 이 새로운 시대의 시작에 있습니다.

An era where digital garments could become an added layer to our reality,

현실 세계에 디지털 의상을 하나 더 입는 이 시대에는

where you will be able to instantly choose to whom you want to present yourself

실시간으로 옷을 골라 입으며 여러분 자신을 표현할 수 있습니다.

wearing multiple different outfits at the same time

동시에 여러 개의 의상을 입어보는 것도

and using most advanced technology, like AR or VR for example.

AR이나 VR같은 최신 기술로 가능하죠.

And not only does it allow for self-expression

디지털 패션은 개성 표현뿐 아니라 전혀 다른 의미가 있습니다.

in totally different contexts,

but digital fashion can be zero-waste and inclusive, available to users,

폐기물 배출이 없고, 포용적이죠.

성별이나 체형, 인종에 상관없이 누구나 이용할 수 있습니다.

regardless of their gender, size or race.

I come from Croatia,

저는 크로아티아에서 왔습니다.

a country that is nowhere on the fashion map,

우리나라는 패션으로 알려지지 않았지만

yet my company is considered one of the pioneers of this field.

우리 회사는 패션계의 한 개척자라 할 수 있을 겁니다.

When we started, we were among the few doing it.

처음 이 일을 시작했을 땐 소수에 불과했지만

And since then,

그 뒤로는

a whole new evolving market has grown around it.

완전히 진화하는 새 시장이 늘어났습니다.

Digital fashion market is going to be huge.

디지털 패션 시장은 크게 성공할 것입니다.

But from my experience, no one knows how far it could go.

제 경험으로는 시장이 얼마나 커질지 알 수 없지만

It's fairly simple.

꽤 간단합니다.

Technology usually grows exponentially, and so will our virtual presence.

기술은 대개 기하급수적으로 발전하고 우리의 가상의 존재들도 그럴 것입니다.

And someone has to dress these people.

그리고 누군가는 그 사람들에게 옷을 입히겠죠.
