I just want to say my name is Emmanuel Jal.

I've been telling a story that has been so painful for me.

It's been a tough journey for me, traveling the world,

telling my story in form of a book.

And also telling it like now.

And also, the easiest one was

그리고, 제가 가장 쉽게 할 수 있는 방법으로

when I was doing it in form of a music.

음악을 통해서 이야기하기도 합니다.

So I have branded myself as a war child.

저는 제 자신을 전쟁 소년이라고 부릅니다.

I'm doing this

저는

because of an old lady in my village now,

저와 같은 마을에 사는 아이를 잃은 한 부인을 위해

who have lost her children.

지금 이 자리에 서 있습니다.

There is no newspaper to cover her pain,

그 마을에는 그녀의 아픔과,

and what she wants to change in this society.

그녀가 이 사회에서 바꾸고 싶은 것을 보도할 신문이 없지요.

And I'm doing it for a young man

그리고, 사회를 변화시키기 위해 무엇인가를 하고 싶어하지만

who want to create a change and has no way to project his voice

글을 쓸 줄 몰라 자신의 목소리를 낼 수 없는 어떤 청년을 위해

because he can't write.

이 자리에 서 있습니다.

Or there is no Internet, like Facebook, MySpace,

이야기를 할 수 있는 Facebook, MySpace,

YouTube, for them to talk.

Youtube, 그런 것도 없습니다.

Also one thing that kept me pushing this story,

또한 이 이야기를 하는 이유는

this painful stories out, the dreams I have,

이런 고통스러운 이야기들, 가끔씩 꾸는 꿈들이

sometimes, is like the voices of the dead,

마치 죽은 자들이 제게 목소리를 내는 것 같기 때문이죠.

that I have seen

제게 죽은 자들의 목소리는

would tell me, "Don't give up. Keep on going."

"포기하지마. 계속 전진하는 거야." 라고 말하곤 하죠.

Because sometime I feel like stopping and not doing it,

가끔은 저도 그만두고 싶을 때가 있습니다.

because I didn't know what I was putting myself into.

지금 제가 뭘 하려고 하는지도 모를 때도 있었죠.

Well I was born in the most difficult time,

저는 가장 힘든 시기에 태어났습니다.

when my country was at war.

제 조국은 전쟁중이었지요.

I saw my village burned down.

제 마을은 불타버렸고,

The world that meant a lot to me, I saw it

전 제게 소중했던 그 세상이

vanish in my face.

눈앞에서 사라지는 것을 보았습니다.

I saw my aunt in rape when I was only five.

다섯 살 때는 이모님이 강간당하는 것을 보았고

My mother was claimed by the war.

어머니는 전쟁에서 목숨을 잃었습니다.

My brothers and sisters were scattered.

형제들과 자매들은 흩어졌습니다.

And up to now, me and my father

그리고 현재까지, 저와 제 아버지는

were detached and I still have issues with him.

제대했지만, 아직 해결할 일이 남아있죠.

Seeing people die every day,

매일 사람이 죽는 것을 봤고,

my mother crying,

어머니는 매일 울었습니다.

it's like I was raised in a violence.

저는 폭력 속에서 자라났습니다.

And that made me call myself a war child.

그리고 그것 때문에 저는 저를 전쟁 소년 이라고 부릅니다.

And not only that, when I was eight

그 뿐만이 아닙니다. 저는 여덟살에

I became a child soldier.

소년병이 되었습니다.

I didn't know what was the war for.

전 전쟁이 왜 일어나고 있는지도 몰랐습니다.

But one thing I knew

알고 있는 것 하나란

was an image that I saw that stuck in my head.

뇌리에 박힌 이미지 하나였습니다.

When I went to the training camp I say,

제가 훈련소에 갔을 때 저는 이렇게 말했습니다.

"I want to kill as many Muslims,

"최대한 많은 이슬람교도와

and as many Arabs, as possible."

아랍인을 죽이고 싶어요."

The training wasn't easy, but that was the driving force,

훈련은 쉽지 않았습니다. 그렇지만 저를 이끈 힘이 있었죠.

because I wanted to revenge for my family.

가족을 위해 복수를 하고 싶었습니다.

I wanted to revenge for my village.

마을을 위해 복수를 하고 싶었어요.

Luckily now things have changed

다행히 지금은 상황이 바뀌었습니다.

because I came to discover the truth.

왜냐하면 제가 진실을 알았기 때문이죠.

What was actually killing us wasn't the Muslims,

우리를 죽이는 건 이슬람교도나

wasn't the Arabs.

아랍인들이 아니었어요.

It was somebody sitting somewhere manipulating the system,

우리를 죽이는 건 시스템을 교묘하게 다루며

and using religion to get what they want to get out of us,

종교를 이용해서 우리에게서 원하는 것을 가져가려는 사람들이었습니다.

which is the oil, the diamond,

그 원하는 것이란 석유와 다이아몬드와

the gold and the land.

금과 땅이었죠.

So realizing the truth gave me a position to choose:

진실을 알고 나서 저는 선택의 기로에 섰습니다.

should I continue to hate, or let it go?

계속 증오해야하나? 아니면 용서해야하나?

So I happened to forgive. Now I sing

저는 용서했습니다. 이제는 이슬람교도들과

music with the Muslims. I dance with them.

함께 노래합니다. 그들과 춤을 춥니다.

I even had a movie out called "War Child,"

심지어는 이슬람교도들의 자금 지원으로

funded by Muslim people.

"War Child(전쟁 소년)" 이라는 영화도 냈어요.

So that pain has gone out.

그리고 그 고통은 사라졌습니다.

But my story is huge.

하지만 제 이야기는 너무나 양이 많기에,

So I'm just going to go into a different step now,

which is easier for me.

I talk about my story.

제가 겪은 이야기입니다.

One of the journey that I tread

제가 지나온 여정 중에

when I was tempted to eat my friend because we had no food

음식이 없어서 친구를 먹고 싶었을 때의 이야기입니다.

and we were like around 400.

저희는 총 400명 정도 였지만

And only 16 people survived that journey.

그 여정에서 16명만이 살아남았죠.

So I hope you're going to hear this.

잘 들어주세요.

My dreams are like torment.

[낭송]: 내 꿈은 마치 고문과 같다

My every moment.

꿈을 꾸는 매 순간

Voices in my brain, of friends that was slain.

죽임을 당하는 친구의 목소리가 내 머리 속에 울려 퍼진다.

Friends like Lual who died by my side,

내 곁에서 친구 루알은 죽었다.

of starvation.

굶주림으로.

In the burning jungle, and the desert plain.

불타는 정글과 황량한 사막에서

Next was I, but Jesus heard my cry.

다음은 내 차례였지만, 예수님께서 내 목소리를 들으시고

As I was tempted to eat the rotten flesh

내가 내 동료의 썩은 살을

of my comrade,

먹을 유혹에 빠지려던 찰나에.

he gave me comfort.

그분께서 내게 위안을 주셨다.

We used to raid villages,

우리는 마을을 약탈하곤 했다

stealing chickens, goats and sheeps,

닭, 염소, 양 등등..

anything we could eat.

먹을 것이라면 뭐든지.

I knew it was rude, but we needed food.

나쁜 짓인 것을 알았지만 우리에겐 음식이 필요했으니

And therefore I was forced to sin,

죄를 지을 수 밖에 없었다.

forced to sin to make a living,

살기 위해 죄를 지을 수 밖에 없었다

forced to sin to make a living.

살기 위해 죄를 지을 수 밖에 없었다.

Sometimes you gotta lose to win.

가끔, 이기기 위해서는 잃어야 한다

Never give up. Never give in.

절대로 포기하지 말자. 절대로 항복하지 말자.

Left home at the age of seven.

집을 떠난 일곱살 짜리 아이는

One year later, live with an AK-47 by my side.

1년 후에는 AK-47 로 무장하고,

Slept with one eye open wide.

잘 때도 한쪽 눈을 크게 뜨고,

Run, duck, play dead and hide.

도망치고, 숨고, 죽은 척하고, 도피한다.

I've seen my people die like flies.

사람들이 파리떼 처럼 죽어나가는 것을 보았지만

But I've never seen a dead body,

죽은 적군을 본 적이 없다.

at least one that I've killed.

내가 죽인 것은 본 적이 없다.

But still as I wonder, I won't go under.

의아하게 생각하면서도, 굴복하지는 않을 것이다

Guns barking like lightning and thunder.

천둥 번개처럼 울부짖는 총구

As a child so young and tender,

어리고 여린 아이로써

Words I can't forget I still remember.

잊을 수 없는 이야기들을 기억한다.

I saw sergeant command raising his hand,

하사관이 손을 번쩍 들며 명령한다.

no retreat, no surrender.

후퇴는 없다, 항복은 없다.

I carry the banner of the trauma.

난 정신적 외상을 입어.

War child, child without a mama,

전쟁 소년, 어머니 없는 아이는

still fighting in the saga.

아직 이야기 속에서 싸우지만

Yet as I wage this new war I'm not alone in this drama.

내가 이 새로운 전쟁을 계속 하는 한, 난 이 드라마에서 혼자가 아니다.

No sit or stop, as I reach for the top

정상에 이르기 전까지는 주저앉지도 멈추지도 않는다.

I'm fully dedicated like a patriotic cop.

난 애국심에 불타는 경찰처럼 헌신한다.

I'm on a fight, day and night.

나는 밤낮으로 싸운다.

Sometime I do wrong in order to make things right.

가끔 올바른 일을 하기 위해 잘못된 행동을 하기도 한다.

It's like I'm living a dream.

마치 꿈을 꾸는 것 같다.

First time I'm feeling like a human being.

나는 비로소 내가 사람임을 실감한다.

Ah! The children of Darfur.

아! 다르푸르의 아이들이여.

Your empty bellies on the telly and now it's you

티비에서는 너희 굶주린 배가 나오고

that I'm fighting for.

내가 싸우는 건 너희를 위해서야.

Left home.

집을 떠났지.

Don't even know the day I'll ever return.

언제가 되면 다시 돌아갈 지.

My country is war-torn.

조국은 전쟁으로 피폐해졌고

Music I used to hear was bombs and fire of guns.

내가 듣던 음악은 폭탄과 총성

So many people die that I don't even cry no more.

많은 사람이 죽었고 난 더 이상 눈물조차 흘릴 수 없었다.

Ask God question, what am I here for.

신에게 물었다. 내가 왜 여기 있어야 하는지

And why are my people poor.

왜 우리 민족은 가난한지.

And why, why when the rest of the children were learning how to read and write,

왜 다른 아이들은 읽고 쓰는 것을 배울 때,

I was learning how to fight.

난 싸우는 법을 배우고 있었는지.

I ate snails, vultures, rabbits,

난 달팽이, 독수리, 토끼,

snakes, and anything that had life.

뱀, 뭐든지 살아 있는 것이라면 먹었다

I was ready to eat.

뭐든 먹었다.

I know it's a shame. But who is to be blamed?

부끄러운 일이다. 그러나 누가 비난할 수 있겠는가.

That's my story shared in the form of a lesson.

교훈의 형태로 제 이야기를 여러분과 나눠보았습니다.

What energized me and kept me going is the music I do.

저에게 힘을 주고 계속 나아갈 수 있는 힘을 주었던 것은 제 음악이었습니다.

I never saw anybody

저는 제게

to tell my story to them

조언을 해 주거나 치유를 해 줄 수 있는 사람이

so they could advise me or do therapy.

아무도 없었습니다.

So the music had been my therapy for me.

그래서 음악이 바로 저를 치유해 주었죠.

It's been where I actually see heaven,

그 속에서 천국을 볼 수 있습니다

where I can be happy,

그 속에서 행복하고요.

where I can be a child again, in dances, through music.

그 속에서 다시 어린이가 될 수 있습니다. 춤과 음악으로.

So one thing I know about music:

음악에 대한 제가 알고 있는 것은,

music is the only thing that has power

음악은 힘을 가지고 있다는 사실입니다.

to enter your cell system,

음악은 당신의 세포 하나하나와,

your mind, your heart,

마음 속으로, 심장에 스며들어

influence your soul and your spirit,

영혼과 정신에 영향을 미치는 유일한 것이죠.

and can even influence the way you live

그리고 음악은 당신의 사는 방식에도 영향을 주지요.

without even you knowing.

당신이 모르는 사이에 말이죠.

Music is the only thing that can

음악은 유일하게

make you want to wake up your bed

당신이 아침에 일어나서

and shake your leg,

다리를 흔들고 싶게 할 수 있습니다.

without even wanting to do it.

스스로 원하지도 않는데 말이죠.

And so the power music has

그래서 음악이 가진 힘을

I normally compare to the power love

사랑의 힘과 비교할 수 있습니다.

when love doesn't see a color.

사랑에 빠지면 아무것도 분간할 수 없잖아요.

You know, if you fall in love with a frog, that's it.

개구리와 사랑에 빠진다고 해도, 아무런 문제가 없는거죠.

One testimony about how I find music

음악의 힘을 깨닫게 되던 순간에 대해

is powerful is when

증언을 하나 하자면

I was still a soldier back then.

제가 예전에 소년병이던 시절,

I hated the people in the north.

저는 북쪽 사람들을 증오했어요.

But I don't know why I don't hate their music.

그런데 왜 그들의 음악은 싫지 않은지 모르겠더라고요.

So we party and dance to their music.

그래서 우리는 그 음악에 춤추고 놀았습니다.

And one thing that shocked me is one day

그리고 저를 놀라게 했던 어떤 것은, 어느 날

they brought an Arab musician

아랍 음악가가

to come and entertain the soldiers.

군인들을 즐겁게 해 주려고 왔을 때였습니다.

And I almost broke my leg dancing to his music.

그리고 저는 다리가 부러질 정도로 그의 음악에 춤을 췄지요.

But I had this question.

그 때는 의문이 있었지만

So now I'm doing music so I know what the power of music is.

지금은 제가 음악을 하니 음악의 힘을 알지요.

So what's happening here?

여기서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는걸까요?

I've been in a painful journey.

저는 고통스러운 길을 걸어 왔습니다.

Today is day number 233

오늘은 제가 저녁만 먹은 지

in which I only eat dinner.

233일 째 되는 날입니다.

I don't eat breakfast. No lunch.

전 아침도, 점심도 먹지 않습니다.

And I've done a campaign called

그리고 저는 "이기기 위해 잃는" 라는

Lose to Win.

캠페인을 하고 있어요.

Where I'm losing so that I could win

지는 것이 바로 제가 지금 싸우고 있는

the battle that I'm fighting now.

전투를 이기게 하겠죠.

So my breakfast, my lunch,

그래서 저의 아침, 점심,

I donate it to a charity that I founded

이것을 제가 세운 자선 단체에 기부합니다

because we want to build a school in Sudan.

수단에 학교를 짓기 위해서요.

And I'm doing this because also

이처럼 저녁 한 끼만 먹는 것은

it's a normal thing in my home, people eat one meal a day.

사실 제 집에서는 일상적인 일입니다. 고향 사람들은 하루에 한 끼만 먹습니다.

Here I am in the West. I choose not to.

지금 전 서구권에 살고 있고, 전 세 끼를 먹지 않으려는 겁니다.

So in my village now, kids there,

지금 제 고향의 어린 아이들은,

they normally listen to BBC, or any radio,

평소 BBC를 듣고, 라디오를 들으면서

and they are waiting to know,

기다리고 있습니다.

the day Emmanuel will eat his breakfast

임마누엘이 아침을 먹는 날

it means he got the money to build our school.

그는 학교를 지을 돈이 생겼다는 걸 의미하니까요.

And so I made a commitment. I say,

그래서 저는 약속을 했습니다. 저는,

"I'm gonna not eat my breakfast."

"아침을 안 먹을 꺼야." 라고요.

I thought I was famous enough that I would raise the money within one month,

제가 한 달 내로 돈을 모을 수 있을 만큼 유명한 줄 알았습니다.

but I've been humbled.

아니더군요. 초라해졌습니다.

(Laughter)

So it's taken me 232 days.

그래서 232일이 걸렸습니다.

And I said, "No stop until we get it."

그리고 저는, "돈을 모을 때까지 멈추지 않을 것" 이라고 했죠.

And like it's been done on Facebook, MySpace.

Facebook과 Myspace에서도 돈이 들어옵니다.

The people are giving three dollars.

사람들이 3달러 씩 기부합니다.

The lowest amount we ever got was 20 cents.

지금까지 받아본 돈 중에 가장 적은 돈은 20센트였습니다.

Somebody donated 20 cents online.

누가 인터넷으로 20센트를 기부했습니다.

I don't know how they did it.

어떻게 기부했는지는 모르겠어요.

(Laughter)

But that moved me.

그들의 기부에 저는 감동받았습니다.

And so, the importance of education to me

저는 교육이 매우 중요하다고 생각합니다. 교육은

is what I'm willing to die for.

제가 죽어서라도 지키고 싶은 것입니다.

I'm willing to die for this,

목숨을 바칠 수도 있다는 거에요.

because I know what it can do to my people.

왜냐하면 [교육이] 우리 민족에게 어떤 효과를 미치는지 알기 때문입니다.

Education enlighten your brain,

교육은 사람들을 계몽시키고,

give you so many chances,

더 많은 기회를 주고,

and you're able to survive.

살아 남을 수 있도록 합니다.

As a nation we have been crippled.

우리 조국은 국가의 기능을 상실했습니다.

For so many years we have fed on aid.

너무나도 오랫동안 우리는 구호물자에만 기대어 살아왔죠.

You see a 20-years-old, 30-years-old

난민 수용소에 20년, 30년 째 있는

families in a refugee camps.

가족들이 있습니다.

They only get the food that drops from the sky, from the U.N.

그들은 UN이 하늘에서 떨어뜨려 주는 음식에 의존해 살고 있습니다.

So these people,

그래서 이 사람들에게는,

you're killing a whole generation if you just give them aid.

구호 물자만 준다면 한 세대를 통째로 죽이는 겁니다.

If anybody want to help us

누군가가 우리를 돕고 싶다면

this is what we need.

우리가 필요한 것이에요:

Give us tools. Give the farmers tools.

우리에게 도구를 주세요. 농부들에게 연장을 주세요.

It's rain. Africa is fertile. They can grow the crops.

비가 옵니다. 아프리카는 비옥해요. 작물을 키울 수 있습니다.

Invest in education.

교육에 투자하세요.

Education so that we have strong institution

강력한 교육기관을 세워

that can create a revolution to change everything.

사회 전반을 변화시킬 수 있는 혁명을 이루기 위해.

Because we have all those old men

기성 세력들은 아프리카에서

that are creating wars in Africa. They will die soon.

전쟁을 일으키고 있어요. 그들은 곧 죽을 겁니다.

But if you invest in education

그러나 교육에 투자를 하면

then we'll be able to change Africa.

아프리카를 변화시킬 수 있습니다.

That's what I'm asking.

제가 부탁하는 바입니다.

So in order to do that,

I founded a charter called Gua Africa,

저는 Gua Africa 라는 비영리 단체를 설립했습니다.

where we put kids in school.

거기에서는 아동 교육을 하지요.

And now we have a couple in university.

그리고 이제는 대학이 있습니다.

We have like 40 kids, ex-child soldiers

아이들이 40명 정도 있습니다. 소년병출신의 아이들과

mixed with anybody that we feel like we want to support.

우리가 지원하고 싶은 보통의 아이들이 있습니다.

And I said "I'm going to put it in practice."

저는, "내 계획을 이제 실행할꺼야,"라고 말했죠

And with the people that are going to follow me and help me do things.

저를 따르고 제 일을 도와주는 사람들과 함께 합니다.

That's what I want to do to change,

그게 제가 하고 싶은 일이에요. 변화를 주는것,

to make a difference in the world.

세상을 바꾸는 것.

Well now, my time is going,

She came to my country and saw the importance

She said the only way to help Sudan

is to invest in the women, educating them,

educating the children,

so that they could come and create a revolution

in this complex society.

So she even ended up marrying a commander

결국 그녀는 SPLA의 사령관과

from the SPLA.

결혼까지 했습니다.

And she rescued over 150 child soldiers.

150명이 넘는 소년병을 구출했죠.

One of them happened to be me now.

그리고 그 중 하나가 바로 저였습니다.

And so at this moment I want to ask to celebrate Emma with me.
