How to overcome apathy and find your power | Dolores Huerta

I want to start out with quoting Helen Keller,

that great woman that we all admire.

And she had a statement that is very profound,

and this statement is

that science has been able to find cures for many evils,

and that evil is apathy.

So, we know that apathy really costs us a lot,

especially in our democracy.

And when we think of why people do not get involved,

사람들이 왜 사회문제에 적극적으로 관여하지 않는지

why they do not become activists,

it's often that people are so worn down with their own familial responsibilities,

and women especially.

특히 여성들이요.

You know, women, they have so many inhibitions.

아시는 것처럼, 제약이 너무 많습니다.

Many of them have suffered so much trauma in their lives,

많은 여성들이 큰 정신적 고통과

so many aggressions in their lives.

위협 속에서 살아 왔어요.

And so it's very hard for them to realize that they have leadership capacities.

밖으로 나가 세상의 변화를 이끌

That they can get out there, and they could change the world.

지도자의 역량을 기대하는건 무리인 이유입니다.

Another thing that many women --

또 많은 여성들이

we think that we have to do everything.

자신만이 유일하게 가족들을

That we are the only ones responsible for our families,

돌봐야 하는 것처럼 모든 일을 다 떠 맡기 때문에,

and it is so hard for us to delegate

가사를 분담하거나

and just get others to help us do the duties that we are responsible for.

도움을 구하기라도 하면 난처해지거나

We feel embarrassed or we feel guilty.

죄책감마저 들지만,

But we know that we have to make this happen,

용기를 내 그렇게 해야 합니다.

because if not, we will never have time to be able to volunteer

그렇지 않으면, 사회의 많은 문제들을 위해

to help on these many causes that are now facing us.

봉사할 시간이 전혀 없을 테니까요.

One of the areas that women can give up a little bit of time

여성들이 조금씩 포기해야 할 것도 있는데,

and that is in shopping, OK?

바로 쇼핑이죠?

And especially when we go out there

shopping for things that we don't even need.

You know, you never saw a hearse with a U-Haul behind it.

죽어서 가져갈 수도 없는데 말이죠.

We have to live simply, so that others can simply live.

모두 솔선수범해 검소하게 살아야 합니다.

And when we think of the kind of inheritance

자식들이나 손주들에게

that we want to leave to our children or our grandchildren,

뭔가 물려줄 생각을 한다면,

think of leaving them a legacy of justice.

정의라는 유산을 생각해 보세요.

This is a legacy that they can not only imitate,

이런 유산은 대대로 모범이 될 뿐 아니라,

but they can be proud of for the rest of their lives.

평생 긍지를 가질 수 있는 거잖아요.

If we leave them a lot of material goods, all they're going to do is fight,

물질적인 것만 남겨 준다면 싸우다 지쳐 서로 증오하고 말겠죠.

and they're going to hate each other.

Just remember that, when we think about what we're doing.

어떤 상황이든, 꼭 기억하세요.

The other thing that we have to do to liberate our women, eventually,

언젠가 여성들이 세상을 위해

so that we can do the kind of volunteer work that we need to do

발 벗고 나설 만큼 자유로워지려면,

to change this world,

젊고 어린 여성들을 위한

is we have to have a different kind of an education for our young women.

차별화된 교육이 필요하다는 사실을요.

Unfortunately, in our societies around the world,

안타깝게도, 세상 어디에서나 우리는

women are taught to be victims.

여성들에게 희생을 강요합니다.

Women are not taught that they are going to have to defend themselves,

자신을 지키고, 자립해서 살고,

that they're going to have to support themselves

스스로를 보호하도록

and they have to protect themselves.

교육받지 않죠.

Because, you know, when we actually look at the animal kingdom,

사실 동물의 왕국을 보면,

and we see who are the most ferocious, the male or the female?

수컷과 암컷 중 어떤게 더 무서운지 알 수 있잖아요.

We know it's the female, right?

암컷이잖아요, 그렇죠?

So something went wrong with us at the top of that animal kingdom as women.

그럼 우리 여자들이 서열 1위일텐데 도대체 뭐가 문제일까요.

(Laughter)

So I want to give you an example of how I found my voice.

제 의견의 권리를 어떻게 찾았는지 말씀드릴게요.

And I was very fortunate in that, when I was 25 years old,

아주 운 좋게도 제가 25살일 때,

I met a gentleman named Fred Ross Sr.,

'프레드 로스 시니어'라는 분을 만나게 됐는데

who organized a chapter of a group called the Community Service Organization

제 고향 캘리포니아 스탁턴에 사회봉사단체를 만든 분이시죠.

in my hometown of Stockton, California.

This was a grassroots organization, and I was recruited to be a volunteer.

제가 자원봉사를 하던 풀뿌리 단체였죠.

So, one day, while we were sitting in the office,

하루는 사무실에 있는데,

a farm worker comes in.

농부 한 분이 들어 오셨죠.

And he's paralyzed, he can hardly walk, he has a crutch.

마비가 와서 목발을 짚고도 걷기가 힘들어 도움이 필요했어요.

And he needs help.

He needs someone to help him go down to the welfare office

복지과에 내려가 신청서를 작성하려면

and make an application.

누군가의 도움이 필요해 제가 나섰죠.

So, I volunteered to do that.

But when I got to the welfare office,

그런데, 복지과에선

they would not let me make an application for this gentleman.

제가 대신 신청할 수 없다고 했어요.

So I didn't know what to do, I was at a loss.

어떻게 해야 할지 몰라서,

So I went back to the office, and I told Mr. Ross,

사무실로 돌아가 로스 씨한테 얘기했죠,

"They won't let me make an application."

"제가 대신 신청할 수 없다는데요."

And he said to me, very sternly,

그 분은 단호하게 말했습니다,

"You go right back down to that welfare office,

"다시 복지과로 내려가서

and you demand to see a supervisor.

책임자를 찾으세요.

And you demand that they let him make an application."

그리고, 그 사람한테 직접 신청해 달라고 하세요."

And I thought, "Wow, I can do that?"

"와, 그래도 될까?" 하고 전 생각했죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So I thought about it,

생각을 가다듬고,

and I kind of overcame my anxieties and my fears.

불안하고 두려운 걸 좀 떨쳐 내고,

I went down to the welfare office and I demanded to see the supervisor.

복지과로 내려가서 책임자 좀 보자고 했죠.

Sure enough, he came out,

아니나 다를까, 그 분이 나와서

and they had to let Mr. Ruiz make an application for welfare.

루이즈 씨는 접수를 잘 마치고,

And he got his disability for himself and his family.

결국 본인과 가족들을 위해 장애수당을 받을 수 있었습니다.

But that taught me a lesson.

제겐 큰 교훈이었어요.

That taught me that I had a voice.

저도 의견의 권리가 있다는 걸 알려줬죠.

Well, Mr. Ross also taught many of us many other things, including Cesar Chavez

로스 씨는 '시저 차베즈'를 포함한 우리 자원봉사자들에게

and many other volunteers.

많은 걸 가르쳐 주셨어요.

And he taught us not only that we can make demands of people,

특히 공직에 있는 사람들에게 당당히 요구할 권리가

especially our public officials.

우리에게 있다는 것과,

And this is something we should always keep in mind:

그들이 우리를 위해 일하는 사람들이라는 걸

every public official -- guess what -- they work for us.

반드시 기억하라고 하셨죠.

Because we pay their salaries with out taxes.

결국 세금으로 그들의 임금이 지급되니까

And they are actually our servants.

우리가 고용한 사람들 맞습니다.

Some of them turn out to be leaders, but not all of them.

그 중에 지도자들도 있지만 다는 아니죠.

(Laughter)

Once in a while we get a leader out of there.

이따금 우리가 지도자를 뽑기도 하는데,

The other thing that Mr. Ross taught us is that voting is extremely important.

투표의 중요성 또한 로스 씨가 가르쳐 주셨어요.

And not just voting,

본인 뿐 아니라,

but going out there and getting other people to vote.

다른 사람들도 참여하도록 해야 한다고 하셨죠.

Going door to door.

집집마다 찾아 가거나,

Phone banking, talking to voters,

전화로 유권자들과 얘기를 해야 하는데,

because many voters have a lot of doubts and they don't know how to vote.

대체로 의심들이 많고 누구를 뽑아야 할지 모르니까요.

And unfortunately,

안타깝게도,

we know that in many countries people are not allowed to vote

많은 나라에서 유권자 탄압으로인해

because we have voter suppression in other countries,

많은 사람들이 투표조차 못하게 됩니다.

like we do here in the United States of America.

여기 미국도 예외가 아니죠.

But the thing is, if we can get out there as individuals

우리가 나서 사람들과 하나 하나 얘기를 하다보면,

and talk to people, so we can remove their apathy

그들의 무관심을 관심으로 바꿔

and make sure that they can vote.

꼭 투표하도록 할 수 있습니다.

So, I want to give you an example of a woman in our foundation,

저희 돌로레스 후에르타 재단에서 일하는

the Dolores Huerta Foundation,

한 여성의 이야기는

and just to show you that sometimes people have power,

인간의 잠재된 힘이 발견되는

but they don't know it.

바로 그 순간부터,

But once they find it, they do miraculous things.

So, Leticia Prado is an immigrant from Mexico,

only has a sixth-grade education

and speaks very limited English.

But she was very concerned

캘리포니아 센트럴 벨리의

because the children at the middle school in their town called Weedpatch --

this is in California, Central Valley --

운동장에서 맘 놓고 놀지 못해 늘 걱정이 많았죠.

they couldn't go out and play in the schoolyard,

because the air quality is so bad

캘리포니아 컨 카운티

in the southern part of Kern County, California

남쪽 지역의 공기가 너무 안좋았거든요.

in our United States of America.

우리 미국에서 말이죠.

So she and her husband went out there, and they passed a bond issue

그래서 남편과 함께 아이들이 뛰어 놀

to build a brand new, state-of-the-art gymnasium

최신 시설의 체육관을 세울 공채 발행을 위해 발 벗고 나섰습니다.

for the kids at their middle school.

That was a big success.

결국 대성공이었죠.

Then she heard a rumor

그리고, 소문 하나를 듣게 됩니다.

that the principal was going to end the breakfast program

교장선생이 번거로운 절차를 핑계로

for the farm worker children,

농민 자녀들을 위한

because the principal thought it was just too much paperwork.

아침 급식을 중단한다는 거였죠.

So, Leticia got herself elected to the school board.

결국 그녀는 학교 이사회의 임원으로 선출돼,

And they kept the breakfast program, and she got rid of the principal.

아침 급식은 계속 진행하게 했고, 결국 교장을 내쫓아 버렸죠.

(Laughter)

(Applause)

So there were other rumors

또, 수도사업본부의

about some corruption in the local water district.

부패에 대한 얘기를 전해 듣고,

So, Leticia got herself elected to the water district.

이사진으로 선출돼

Then she looked into all of the finances of the water district

재정상태를 살펴 봤는데,

and found there was 250,000 dollars missing from their bank account.

계좌에 25만 달러(약 3억 원) 정도가 비어있는 걸 알아 냈습니다.

So, Leticia called in the grand jury, and several arrests have been made.

결국 재판이 열렸고, 몇 명 수갑을 차게 됐죠.

And this is just an example of a woman who never went to high school,

고등학교도, 대학교도 다니지 못한

never went to college,

한 여인의 잠재력을 보여준 한 일화입니다.

but she found her power.

And in addition, she has recruited other people in the community

게다가, 지역의 다른 사람들까지

to also run for public office,

공직에 출마시켰는데,

and guess what -- they've all gotten themselves elected.

어떻게 됐을까요...모두 선출되었어요.

So, I take that Leticia really embodies

'코레타 스캇 킹'의 뜻을 레티시아가

something that Coretta Scott King said.

제대로 실천한 거죠.

And I want to share this with you. Coretta Scott King said,

코레타 스캇 킹은 이렇게 말했습니다,

"We will never have peace in the world until women take power."

"여성에게 힘이 있어야 세상이 평화로워 집니다."

(Applause)

Now, I have amended that statement to say

저는 그 말을 살짝 바꿔서

that we will never have peace in the world until feminists take power.

여성 대신에 페미니스트로 쓰고 있어요.

(Laughter)

Because we know there is a difference, right?

다들 그 차이를 아시잖아요, 그렇죠?

Not only that, but if we want to define what is a feminist --

페미니스트를 정의하자면, 여성의 생식권,

a person who stands up for reproductive rights,

이민자들의 권리와 환경보호,

for immigrants' rights, for the environment,

성소수자들의 권리, 그리고

for LGBT rights and also for labor unions and working people.

노조와 노동자들을 지지하는 사람 등 아주 다양합니다.

(Applause)

Which also means that men can also be feminists.

그러니 남자도 페미니스트가 될 수 있는 거죠.

(Applause)

So when we think of feminization,

여성화에 대해 생각한다면,

we should also think of how can we feminize the policies,

정부 정책에도 적용할 방법을 고민해 봐야겠죠.

and not only of our major countries,

미국처럼 부유한

the wealthy countries like the United States,

주요 국가들 뿐 아니라,

but all over the world,

전 세계에

our domestic and foreign policy.

영향을 주는 정책들을 말이죠.

And one of the things that we can do to stop wars and to have peace

모든 전쟁을 종식시키고 평화를 이루기 위해선

is to make sure that the wealthiest countries in the world

부유한 선진국들이 개발도상국들을 도와줘야 합니다.

also help the developing countries.

Now, we did this in the past.

실제로 전에 그런 적이 있죠.

After World War II,

2차 세계대전 후,

when Japan and Germany were devastated after the war,

폐허가 된 독일과 일본에

United States of America gave many tax dollars to those two countries,

미국은 국고를 써가며 많은 원조를 해,

so that they can rebuild their economies and rebuild their corporations.

기업과 경제를 재건할 수 있게 했습니다.

And we can do that again.

다시 가능한 일입니다.

And if we can think about how we can help these other countries.

이런 나라들에 어떤 도움을 줄지 고심해 본다면 말이죠.

And I want to give an example

현재 미국에 당면한

of issues that we are facing in the United States of America,

여러 가지 문제들을 예로 들어 볼게요.

for instance.

We know that right now

중남미의 난민들이

we have a lot of refugees from Central America

미국 국경까지 올라와 머무르고 있다는 사실을

that are at the border of the United States.

다들 아실 거예요.

Why do people leave their homes,

그들은 왜 우리가 휴양지로 생각하는

their beautiful homes that we go to as tourists?

그 아름다운 고향을 떠나는 걸까요?

Because they don't have opportunities there.

기회가 없기 때문입니다.

And then we think, "Hm, bananas."

"음, 바나나."라고 생각할 수도 있지만,

How many jillions of bananas do we consume in the United States every single day?

미국이나 전 세계적으로 도대체 얼마나 많은 바나나가

And throughout the world.

매일 소비되는지 아세요?

Now, do the people in Central America

그럼, 우리가 소비하는 바나나로

get the profits from the bananas that we consume?

중남미 사람들이 혜택을 볼까요?

No, they don't.

전혀 아닙니다.

The profits go to corporations from the United States of America.

영리는 다 미국 기업들이 챙기고, 그게 부당한 일이란 건

And we think that this is wrong.

우리 모두 잘 알고 있죠.

Now, if the people in Central America were to be able to get some of that money

우리가 바나나에 쓰는 돈이 조금이라도

that we pay for bananas,

중남미 사람들에게 돌아간다면,

then they wouldn't have to leave their homes.

그들이 고향을 떠날 일도 없을테고,

They wouldn't have to come as asylum seekers

미국 국경까지 와서

to the borders of the United States of America.

망명을 신청할 일도 없을테고,

And then maybe, many children would not have to be separated from their parents.

많은 아이들이 부모들과 헤어지는 일도 없겠죠.

Now, we know that there are countries in the world

이 세상엔 국민들에게

that actually have free education and have free health care

무료로 교육과 의료 혜택을 제공하는 나라들이 있음을 아실 거예요.

for all of the people in their country.

And that country is Cuba.

쿠바가 그런 나라인데,

Cuba has health care for every one of their citizens,

모든 사람에게 무료로

and they have a free college education for every one of their citizens.

의료 혜택과 대학 교육을 제공합니다.

They're 11 million citizens.

인구가 천 백만인

Now, we think, if a poor country like Cuba

우리가 알기에도 아주 가난한

can have these kind of resources, and we know that they're a poor country,

쿠바와 같은 나라에 이런 여력이 있는데

then why can't some of the other wealthier countries,

미국처럼 부유한 나라에서

like the United States of America,

그렇게 하지 못하는

do the same?

이유가 뭘까요?

I think that we can make that happen.

우리 모두 나서면 가능합니다.

But we know it's not going to happen

하지만,

until we, the people of the United States of America,

미국인들을 포함한 세상 사람들이

and people throughout the world,

본인의 지역구 뿐 아니라

start making sure that they get public officials elected to their governments

모든 사람들을 위해 일할 수 있는 인물들을

that really care about the constituents, they care about people,

공직으로 보내, 그들이 가진 권력을

they will commit to make sure that the resources that they have

전쟁이 아닌 국민들을 위해

are going to be used for their citizens, and not to be used for war.

So, how do we make this happen?

We have to get rid of the apathy,

we have to get more people involved.

더 많이 참여해야죠.

We know that if we can't have a democracy in the United States,

사람들의 참여가 없다면, 미국이나 세상 어디에도

we can't have democracies throughout the world,

민주주의가 지속될 수 없다는 걸

unless people participate.

우린 잘 알고 있으니까요.

So it is imperative that all of us get out there and we say,

반드시 우리 모두 나서 목소리를 높여야 합니다.

"Get rid of the apathy, get off of the sidewalk,

"무관심을 버리세요, 방관하지 마세요,

come and join the march for peace and justice,

평화와 정의를 위한 시위에 다 같이 참여하세요,

let's make Coretta Scott's vision a reality,

코레타 스캇의 정신을 받들여

to have peace in the world."

세계 평화를 이룩합시다."

We recently had midterm elections in the United States of America.

미국에서 최근 열린 중간 선거에

And what did we see?

무슨 일이 있었죠?

We saw that so many more women,

아주 많은 여성들, 젊은이들,

young people, people of color, LGBT folks,

유색 인종, 그리고 성소수자들이

were all elected to public office.

공직에 선출됐죠.

And we know this happened -- why?

어떻게 가능했을까요?

Because so many women were on the march.

많은 여성들이 시위에 참여했기 때문입니다.

We had the Women's March in the United States.

미국에서도 세계 곳곳에서도

They had the Women's Marches all over the world.

'여성들의 행진' 시위가 열렸습니다.

And so we now see that we have this potential.

이제 그 가능성이 보입니다.

We have this potential to get rid of the apathy.

무관심의 벽을 허물고,

And if we get everyone involved, get everyone committed,

모두 동참해 헌신한다면

then, I think, we can make Coretta Scott's vision come true.

코레타 스캇의 뜻을 실천할 수 있다고 믿습니다.

So, I want to just remind everybody,

이제, 세상의 모든 이들에게

throughout the world, one of the things is,

상기시켜 주고 싶은 건 우리에게

we have power,

가난한 이들에게

poor people have power,

그리고 모든 시민들에게

every citizen has power.

힘이 있다는 사실입니다.

But in order to achieve the peace that we all yearn for,

then we've all got to get involved.

So, what do we say?

Can we do it?

We say, "Yes, we can!"
