I want to share with you something my father taught me:

It's a lesson he shared with me again and again,

and I learned it to be true the hard way.

Here I am in my fourth-grade class.

in Monrovia, Liberia.

교실에서 찍은 사진입니다.

My parents migrated from India to West Africa in the 1970s,

부모님은 1970년대에 인도에서 서아프리카로 이민을 가셨고

and I had the privilege of growing up there.

저는 그곳에서 유년시절을 보내는 특권을 누릴 수 있었죠.

I was nine years old,

9살 때의 저는

I loved kicking around a soccer ball,

축구를 좋아하고

and I was a total math and science geek.

수학과 과학을 특히 좋아하는 좀 별난 아이였습니다.

I was living the kind of life that, really, any child would dream of.

모든 아이들이 꿈꾸는 삶을 살았습니다.

But no condition is permanent.

하지만 환경은 바뀌기 마련이지요.

On Christmas Eve in 1989,

1989년 크리스마스 이브에

civil war erupted in Liberia.

라이베리아에서 내전이 발발했습니다.

The war started in the rural countryside,

전쟁은 시골지역에서 시작되었고

and within months, rebel armies had marched towards our hometown.

몇 개월만에 반군이 우리가 살던 동네로 진격했습니다.

My school shut down,

학교는 문을 닫았고

and when the rebel armies captured the only international airport,

반군이 라이베리아의 유일한 국제 공항을 점령하자

people started panicking and fleeing.

사람들은 공포에 떨며 도망치기 시작했습니다.

My mom came knocking one morning and said, "Raj, pack your things --

어느날 아침 어머니께서 방 문을 두드리며 말씀하셨습니다.

"라지야, 짐을 싸거라. 우리도 떠나야한다."

we have to go."

We were rushed to the center of town,

우리 가족은 도심 한가운데로 급히 갔습니다.

and there on a tarmac, we were split into two lines.

아스팔트 위에 사람들은 두 줄로 서있었습니다.

I stood with my family in one line,

저희 가족도 함께 줄을 섰지요.

and we were stuffed into the cargo hatch

그리고 구조기의 좁은 화물칸에

of a rescue plane.

And there on a bench, I was sitting with my heart racing.

As I looked out the open hatch,

출입구 밖으로 다른 줄에 서 있던

I saw hundreds of Liberians in another line,

수백 명의 라이베리아 사람들이 보였습니다.

children strapped to their backs.

아이들을 등에 업고 있었지요.

When they tried to jump in with us,

그 사람들이 뛰어들어 구조기에 타려고 할 때,

I watched soldiers restrain them.

저는 군인들이 그들을 제지하는 광경을 지켜보고 있을 수 밖에 없었습니다.

They were not allowed to flee.

그들은 결국 도망칠 수 없었습니다.

We were the lucky ones.

우리는 운이 좋았습니다.

We lost what we had,

우리 가족은 전 재산을 잃었지만

but we resettled in America,

미국으로 이주하여 정착했습니다.

and as immigrants, we benefitted from the community of supporters

우리는 이민자였기 때문에 지역사회 사람들의

that rallied around us.

도움을 많이 받았습니다.

They took my family into their home,

그들은 우리 가족을 집으로 초대해서

they mentored me.

저에게 미국이란 곳을 알려주었습니다.

And they helped my dad start a clothing shop.

그리고 아버지가 옷가게를 차리도록 도와주기도 하였습니다.

I'd visit my father on weekends as a teenager

청소년이었던 저는 주말마다 아버지를 도와

to help him sell sneakers and jeans.

운동화나 청바지를 팔았지요.

And every time business would get bad,

장사가 잘 안될 때마다

he'd remind me of that mantra:

아버지는 주문을 외우듯 말씀하셨습니다.

no condition is permanent.

"환경은 바뀌기 마련이다."

That mantra and my parents' persistence and that community of supporters

부모님에게서 그 교훈과 인내심을 배운 덕분에

그리고 지역사회의 도움 덕분에 저는 대학을 졸업하고

made it possible for me to go through college

and eventually to medical school.

의과대학에 입학할 수 있었습니다.

I'd once had my hopes crushed in a war,

저의 희망은 전쟁으로 인해 한 번 좌절되었으나

but because of them,

주변의 많은 도움으로

I had a chance to pursue my dream to become a doctor.

의사가 되고자하는 꿈을 위해 달릴 수 있었습니다.

My condition had changed.

저의 환경은 바뀌었지요.

It had been 15 years since I escaped that airfield,

라이베리아의 비행장에서 탈출한지 15년이 흘렀지만

but the memory of those two lines had not escaped my mind.

두 줄로 서있던 사람들의 모습은 잊혀지지가 않았습니다.

I was a medical student in my mid-20s,

저는 20대 중반의 의과 학생이 되었고

and I wanted to go back

그곳으로 한 번 돌아가서

to see if I could serve the people we'd left behind.

남겨진 사람들을 위해 무슨 일을 할 수 있을지 보고 싶었지요.

But when I got back,

도착해보니

what I found was utter destruction.

그곳은 완전히 폐허가 되어 있었습니다.

The war had left us with just 51 doctors

전쟁으로 인해서 나라 전체의 4백만 인구를 돌보는 의사의 수는

to serve a country of four million people.

고작 51명이었습니다.

It would be like the city of San Francisco having just 10 doctors.

샌프란시스코에 의사가 10명뿐인 것과 마찬가지죠.

So if you got sick in the city where those few doctors remain,

그래도 도시에 사는 사람들은

치료를 받을 수는 있었습니다.

you might stand a chance.

But if you got sick in the remote, rural rainforest communities,

하지만 깊은 숲에 사는 사람들이 아파서 치료를 받으려면

where you could be days from the nearest clinic --

며칠이나 가야 가장 가까운 진료소에 도착했지요.

치료 가능한 병으로도 죽는 환자를 종종 보았습니다.

I was seeing my patients die from conditions no one should die from,

all because they were getting to me too late.

저를 만나기까지 시간이 너무 흘렀다는 것이 유일한 이유였지요.

아침에 일어나니 2살배기 아기의 몸이 펄펄 끓고있다고 상상해보십시오.

Imagine you have a two-year-old who wakes up one morning with a fever,

and you realize she could have malaria,

그리고 여러분은 그 아기가 말라리아에 걸렸을거라고 추측합니다.

and you know the only way to get her the medicine she needs

약을 받아서 아이에게 먹이려면

would be to take her to the riverbed,

그 아기를 강가로 데리고 가서

get in a canoe, paddle to the other side

and then walk for up to two days through the forest

just to reach the nearest clinic.

One billion people live in the world's most remote communities,

전세계 10억명의 사람들은 이렇게 외딴 곳에 살고 있습니다.

and despite the advances we've made in modern medicine and technology,

현대의 의약품과 기술은 진보했지만

our innovations are not reaching the last mile.

여기 있는 사람들은 기술이 주는 혜택을 누리지 못합니다.

These communities have been left behind,

외면당하고 있지요.

because they've been thought too hard to reach

거기는 너무 멀어서 갈 수가 없고

and too difficult to serve.

따라서 그들을 치료하기가 어렵다고 생각하기 때문입니다.

Illness is universal;

어디에나 질병은 존재합니다.

access to care is not.

하지만 그 모든 곳에서 치료를 받을 수는 없습니다.

이 사실을 알게 되었을 때 제 가슴은 뜨거워졌습니다.

And realizing this lit a fire in my soul.

No one should die because they live too far from a doctor or clinic.

의료 시설로부터 멀리 산다는 이유로 사람이 죽어서는 안됩니다.

No condition should be permanent.

환경은 바뀌어야 합니다.

And help in this case didn't come from the outside,

이러한 경우 외부의 손길에 의존하기보다는

it actually came from within.

내부에서 해결을 해야합니다.

It came from the communities themselves.

지역사회 내에서 말이죠.

Meet Musu.

무수를 소개하겠습니다.

Way out in rural Liberia,

라이베리아의 외딴 시골 출신입니다.

where most girls have not had a chance to finish primary school,

그곳에서 대부분의 여자 아이들은 초등교육도 마치지 못합니다.

Musu had been persistent.

하지만 무수는 끈질기게 공부했습니다.

At the age of 18, she completed high school,

열여덟 세에 고등학교를 졸업하고

다시 고향으로 돌아왔습니다.

and she came back to her community.

She saw that none of the children were getting treatment

무수는 말라리아나 폐렴같은 심각한 질병을 앓고 있는 아이들이

치료를 받지 못하고 있다는 사실을

for the diseases they needed treatment for --

deadly diseases, like malaria and pneumonia.

알게 되었습니다.

So she signed up to be a volunteer.

그래서 자원봉사를 시작했습니다.

There are millions of volunteers like Musu in rural parts around our world,

전 세계 외딴 지역에 무수와 같은 수백만 명의 자원봉사자들이 있습니다.

and we got to thinking --

여기에서 우리는 생각을 해냈습니다.

무수와 같은 지역 사회의 일원들이 문제를 해결할 수 있겠다고 말이죠.

community members like Musu could actually help us solve a puzzle.

Our health care system is structured in such a way

우리의 의료 체계에서

that the work of diagnosing disease and prescribing medicines

질병을 진단하고 약을 처방하는 일은

is limited to a team of nurses and doctors like me.

간호사와 저같은 의사만의 것으로 조직화되어 있습니다.

But nurses and doctors are concentrated in cities,

하지만 간호사와 의사들은 대부분 도시에 있기 때문에

so rural communities like Musu's have been left behind.

무수가 사는 시골 지역은 의료 사각지대가 되었습니다.

So we started asking some questions:

What if we could reorganize the medical care system?

What if we could have community members like Musu

be a part or even be the center of our medical team?

What if Musu could help us bring health care from clinics in cities

to the doorsteps of her neighbors?

Musu was 48 when I met her.

And despite her amazing talent and grit,

she hadn't had a paying job in 30 years.

So what if technology could support her?

What if we could invest in her with real training,

equip her with real medicines,

and have her have a real job?

Well, in 2007, I was trying to answer these questions,

and my wife and I were getting married that year.

We asked our relatives to forgo the wedding registry gifts

and instead donate some money

so we could have some start-up money to launch a nonprofit.

I promise you, I'm a lot more romantic than that.

We ended up raising $6,000,

저희는 그렇게 6천 달러를 모아

teamed up with some Liberians and Americans

라이베리아인과 미국인 몇 명으로 팀을 꾸려

and launched a nonprofit called Last Mile Health.

'Last Mile Health'라는 비영리단체를 시작했습니다 .

Our goal is to bring a health worker within reach of everyone, everywhere.

목표는 모두가 어디에서든지 의료인을 만날 수 있게 하는 것이죠.

We designed a three-step process --

우리는 세 단계의 과정을 설계했습니다.

train, equip and pay --

훈련시키고 장비를 제공하고 월급을 지불하지요.

to invest more deeply in volunteers like Musu

무수와 같은 자원봉사자들에게 투자해서

to become paraprofessionals,

그들을 준전문가로 만들어

to become community health workers.

그들이 직접 지역 사회 의료인으로 활동하도록 돕기 위한 것이었습니다.

First we trained Musu to prevent, diagnose and treat

the top 10 diseases afflicting families in her village.

A nurse supervisor visited her every month to coach her.

We equipped her with modern medical technology,

like this $1 malaria rapid test,

and put it in a backpack full of medicines like this

and crucially,

a smartphone, to help her track and report on epidemics.

Last, we recognized the dignity in Musu's work.

마지막으로 무수의 일에 대한 공로를 인정해줍니다.

With the Liberian government, we created a contract,

paid her

and gave her the chance to have a real job.

And she's amazing.

Musu has learned over 30 medical skills,

from screening children for malnutrition,

to assessing the cause of a child's cough with a smartphone,

and providing follow-up care to patients who've lost their limbs.

Working as part of our team,

community health workers can help ensure

reaches the places that most family doctors could never go.

One of my favorite things to do is to care for patients

So last year I was visiting A.B.,

and like Musu, A.B. had had a chance to go to school.

He was in middle school, in the eighth grade,

And while he was making door to door house calls,

A.B. had just been taught how to use this color-coded measuring tape

A.B. noticed that Prince was in the red zone,

which meant he had to be hospitalized.

So A.B. took Prince and his mother to the river,

got in a canoe

and paddled for four hours to get to the hospital.

Later, after Prince was discharged,

A.B. taught mom how to feed baby a food supplement.

A few months ago,

A.B. took me to visit Prince, and he's a chubby little guy.

He's meeting his milestones, he's pulled himself up to a stand,

and is even starting to say a few words.

I'm so inspired by these community health workers.

저는 지역 의료인들을 보고 너무나 감명을 받았습니다.

I often ask them why they do what they do,

and when I asked A.B.,

A.B.는 이렇게 대답했죠.

he said, "Doc, since I dropped out of school, this is the first time

I'm having a chance to hold a pen to write.

The stories of A.B. and Musu have taught me something fundamental

Our will to serve others

타인을 돕고자하는 우리의 의지는

can actually help us transform our own conditions.

우리가 처한 환경도 완전히 바꿀 수 있습니다.

I was so moved by how powerful the will to serve our neighbors can be

이웃을 돕고자 하는 의지가 얼마나 강할 수 있는지를 보고

a few years ago,

아주 감동을 받았습니다. 몇 년 전이었지요.

when we faced a global catastrophe.

세계적인 대형 참사가 발생했을 때 말입니다.

In December 2013,

2013년 12월에

something happened in the rainforests across the border from us in Guinea.

기니 국경 근처에 있는 열대우림 지역에서 발생한 일입니다.

A toddler named Emile fell sick with vomiting, fever and diarrhea.

에밀이라는 작은 아이가 구토를 하고 열이 나고 설사를 하기 시작했습니다.

He lived in an area where the roads were sparse

그 아이는 좁은 길 조차 없는 지역에서 살고 있었습니다.

and there had been massive shortages of health workers.

당연히 의료인들도 턱없이 부족했지요.

Emile died,

에밀은 죽었고

and a few weeks later his sister died,

몇 주 후 그 아이의 누나도 죽었고

and a few weeks later his mother died.

또 몇 주 후 그 아이의 엄마도 죽었습니다.

And this disease would spread from one community to another.

이 질병은 그 지역에서 다른 지역으로 퍼졌습니다.

And it wasn't until three months later

3개월이 지나서야

that the world recognized this as Ebola.

전 세계 사람들은 이 병이 에볼라라는 사실을 알게 되었지요.

When every minute counted, we had already lost months,

and by then the virus had spread like wildfire all across West Africa,

and eventually to other parts of the world.

Businesses shut down, airlines started canceling routes.

At the height of the crisis,

when we were told that 1.4 million people could be infected,

when we were told that most of them would die,

when we had nearly lost all hope,

I remember standing with a group of health workers

in the rainforest where an outbreak had just happened.

We were helping train and equip them to put on the masks,

그들이 환자를 치료하는 동안에

the gloves and the gowns that they needed

저희는 의료인들을 교육시키고

to keep themselves safe from the virus

그들도 바이러스에 감염되지 않도록

while they were serving their patients.

마스크, 장갑, 가운을 제공했습니다.

I remember the fear in their eyes.

And I remember staying up at night, terrified if I'd made the right call

to keep them in the field.

When Ebola threatened to bring humanity to its knees,

Liberia's community health workers didn't surrender to fear.

라이베리아의 지역 의료인들은 두려움에 굴복하지 않았습니다.

They did what they had always done:

그저 늘 하던 일을 계속 했을 뿐이죠.

they answered the call to serve their neighbors.

주민들을 돌보기 위해 전화를 받는 일 말입니다.

Community members across Liberia learned the symptoms of Ebola,

라이베리아 전역의 지역 의료인들은 에볼라의 증상을 배우고

teamed up with nurses and doctors to go door-to-door to find the sick

간호사와 의사와 팀을 이루어 집집마다 방문해서 환자들을 찾아내고

and get them into care.

치료했습니다.

They tracked thousands of people who had been exposed to the virus

and helped break the chain of transmission.

Some ten thousand community health workers risked their own lives

to help hunt down this virus and stop it in its tracks.

Today, Ebola has come under control in West Africa,

and we've learned a few things.

We've learned that blind spots in rural health care

can lead to hot spots of disease,

and that places all of us at greater risk.

We've learned that the most efficient emergency system

is actually an everyday system,

and that system has to reach all communities,

including rural communities like Emile's.

And most of all,

we've learned from the courage of Liberia's community health workers

라이베리아 지역 의료인의 용기있는 행동을 보고

that we as people are not defined by the conditions we face,

인간으로써 우리는 주어진 환경에 좌우되는 존재가 아님을 배웠습니다.

no matter how hopeless they seem.

어떤 희망도 없어 보일지라도요.

We're defined by how we respond to them.

우리 인간은 환경에 어떻게 대처하는지가 중요합니다.

For the past 15 years,

지난 15년 동안

I've seen the power of this idea

평범한 시민을 해당 지역의 의료인으로 바꾼다는 이 아이디어가

to transform everyday citizens into community health workers --

얼마나 강한 힘을 가지는지를 지켜보았습니다.

into everyday heroes.

일상에서의 영웅이 되지요.

And I've seen it play out everywhere,

그리고 서아프리카의 깊은 숲 속뿐만 아니라

from the forest communities of West Africa,

알라스카의 어촌 지역에서도

to the rural fishing villages of Alaska.

It's true,

물론 이 의료인들이

these community health workers aren't doing neurosurgery,

신경외과 수술같은 것은 하지 못합니다.

but they're making it possible

하지만 그들로 하여금

to bring health care within reach of everyone everywhere.

우리 모두가 어디에 살든지 의료 혜택을 받게 되지요.

So now what?

그렇다면 무슨 일을 해야할까요?

Well, we know that there are still millions of people dying

아직도 외진 곳에 사는 수백만 명의 사람들은

from preventable causes

치료 가능한 병으로

in rural communities around the world.

사망하고 있다고 알고 있습니다.

And we know that the great majority of these deaths are happening

대부분 여기 75개의 파란색으로 표시된 국가에서

in these 75 blue-shaded countries.

발생하는 일이라는 것도 알고 있지요.

What we also know

많은 지역 의료인들을 지도하여

is that if we trained an army of community health workers

30가지 정도의 응급치료 기술을 익히게 한다면

to learn even just 30 lifesaving skills,

2030년까지

we could save the lives of nearly 30 million people by 2030.

약 3천만 명의 생명을 살릴 수가 있다는 것도 알고 있습니다.

Thirty services could save 30 million lives by 2030.

30가지의 응급치료로 2030년까지 3천만 명을 살릴 수 있습니다.

That's not just a blueprint --

청사진을 만들어보는 것만이 아닙니다.

we're proving this can be done.

충분히 실현 가능한 계획이라고 우리는 증명하고 있습니다.

In Liberia,

라이베리아 정부는

the Liberian government is training thousands of workers like A.B. and Musu

에볼라 사건 이후에 A.B.와 무수같은 수천 명의 사람들을 훈련시켜서

after Ebola,

to bring health care to every child and family in the country.

모든 국민이 의료 혜택을 받도록 하고 있습니다.

And we've been honored to work with them,

우리는 그들과 함께 일하게 되어 참으로 영광이라고 생각합니다.

and are now teaming up with a number of organizations

그리고 이와 같은 일을 하려는

that are working across other countries

다른 많은 나라의 기관들과

to try to help them do the same thing.

If we could help these countries scale,

우리가 이 정도의 규모로 다른 나라도 도울 수 있다면

we could save millions of lives,

and at the same time,

we could create millions of jobs.

We simply can't do that, though, without technology.

People are worried that technology is going to steal our jobs,

but when it comes to community health workers,

technology has actually been vital for creating jobs.

Without technology -- without this smartphone,

without this rapid test --

이 빠른 진단 키트가 없다면

it would have been impossible for us to be able to employ A.B. and Musu.

우리는 A.B.와 무수를 고용할 수가 없지요.

And I think it's time for technology to help us train,

그리고 기술을 통해서 사람들을 훈련시킬 때가 왔다고 생각합니다.

to help us train people faster and better than ever before.

기술이 더 발전하면 예전보다 빨리, 더 효과적으로 교육할 수가 있지요.

As a doctor,

의사인 저는

I use technology to stay up-to-date and keep certified.

기술을 통해 최신 학문을 배웁니다.

I use smartphones, I use apps, I use online courses.

스마트폰과 애플리케이션을 이용하고 온라인 수업을 듣지요.

But when A.B. wants to learn,

하지만 A.B.가 배우고 싶을 땐

he's got to jump back in that canoe

카누를 타고

and get to the training center.

교육 센터로 갑니다.

And when Musu shows up for training,

her instructors are stuck using flip charts and markers.

강사들은 종이 칠판과 마커로 수업을 진행할 수밖에 없습니다.

Why shouldn't they have the same access to learn as I do?

왜 이들은 우리와는 달리 기술이 주는 혜택을 못받을까요?

If we truly want community health workers to master those lifesaving skills

지역 의료인들이 응급 치료 기술을 보다 더 깊이 배우고자 한다면

and even more,

we've got to change this old-school model of education.

우리는 이렇게 낡은 교육 방식을 바꾸어야 합니다.

Tech can truly be a game changer here.

이 분야에서 기술이야말로 가장 중요한 요소지요.

I've been in awe of the digital education revolution

Khan Academy와 edX 등이 이끄는 디지털 교육 혁명을 보면

that the likes of Khan Academy and edX have been leading.

너무나 놀랍습니다.

And I've been thinking that it's time;

그리고 저는 때가 왔다고 생각합니다.

it's time for a collision

이제는 디지털 교육 혁명과

between the digital education revolution

지역 의료 혁명 사이에 존재하는

and the community health revolution.

벽이 허물어질 때지요.

And so, this brings me to my TED Prize wish.

so they're not stuck using flip charts.

We'll help these countries accredit these workers,

so that they're not stuck remaining an under-recognized, undervalued group,

but become a renowned, empowered profession,

just like nurses and doctors.

자율적으로 일을 할 수 있을 것입니다.

And we'll create a network of companies and entrepreneurs

그리고 사람들의 생명을 살리는 혁신적인 일을 하는 기업과

who've created innovations that can save lives

무수와 같은 의료인들을 연결할 수 있는 기술을 발달시키는 기업 간의

and help them connect to workers like Musu,

네트워크도 만들 예정입니다.

so she can help better serve her community.

그렇게 되면 무수가 담당 지역에서 일을 하는데 더 도움이 되겠지요.

And we'll work tirelessly to persuade governments

또한 여러 정부를 설득시켜서

to make community health workers a cornerstone of their health care plans.

지역 의료인들이 각 나라의 의료 제도의 중심이 되도록 할 것입니다.

We plan to test and prototype the academy in Liberia

일단 라이베리아에서 시범적으로 아카데미를 운영할 예정이고,

and a few other partner countries,

몇 개의 국가들과 협력해서 확장하고

and then we plan to take it global,

그러고 나서 미국의 시골 지역을 포함한

including to rural North America.

전 세계로 넓힐 예정입니다.

With the power of this platform,

이 플랫폼이 힘을 가진다면

we believe countries can be more persuaded

이 의료 개혁이 정말로 가능한 일이라는 것을

that a health care revolution really is possible.

My dream is that this academy will contribute to the training

of hundreds of thousands of community members

to help bring health care to their neighbors --

the hundreds of millions of them

that live in the world's most remote communities,

알라스카의 외딴 어촌지역까지

from the forest communities of West Africa,

그리고 미국 동부의 애팔래치아 꼭대기에 있는 마을에서부터

to the fishing villages of rural Alaska;

아프가니스탄의 산골 지역까지

from the hilltops of Appalachia, to the mountains of Afghanistan.

세상에서 가장 외진 지역에 사는 수많은 사람들을 위해서지요.

I think a lot more about what my father taught me.

아버지의 가르침은 지금 저에게 더 큰 의미로 다가옵니다.

These days, I too have become a dad.

저도 아버지가 되었죠.

I have two sons,

and my wife and I just learned that she's pregnant with our third child.

I was recently caring for a woman in Liberia

최근에 라이베리아의 한 여성을 돌보게 되었습니다.

who, like my wife, was in her third pregnancy.

제 아내처럼 셋째를 품고 있었죠.

But unlike my wife,

하지만 제 아내와는 달리

had had no prenatal care with her first two babies.

산전 검사를 받은 경험이 없었습니다. 첫째와 둘째 때도 마찬가지고요.

She lived in an isolated community in the forest that had gone for 100 years

그녀는 100년 동안이나 의료 서비스가 제공되지 않은

without any health care

어느 고립된 숲 속 마을에 살고 있었는데

until ...

그러다가

until last year when a nurse trained her neighbors

작년에 그녀 이웃 주민들이 간호사에게 교육을 받고

to become community health workers.

처음으로 지역 의료인이 되었죠.

So here I was,

저는 여기에서

seeing this patient who was in her second trimester,

임신 6개월 차인 산모를 만났고

and I pulled out the ultrasound to check on the baby,

태아를 검사하기 위해 초음파 기계를 꺼냈습니다.

and she started telling us stories about her first two kids,

산모는 첫째와 둘째 자녀들에 대해 말하기 시작했는데

and I had the ultrasound probe on her belly,

제가 초음파 기계를 그녀의 배에 대자

and she just stopped mid-sentence.

그녀는 이야기를 멈추었습니다.

She turned to me and she said,

그리고 저에게 물었죠.

"Doc, what's that sound?"

"선생님, 이건 무슨 소리죠?"

It was the first time she'd ever heard her baby's heartbeat.

처음으로 그녀는 태아의 심장 박동 소리를 듣게된 것입니다.

And her eyes lit up in the same way my wife's eyes and my own eyes lit up

제 아내가 우리 아이 심장 소리를 듣고 눈이 반짝였던 것처럼

when we heard our baby's heartbeat.

그녀의 눈도 기쁨으로 빛났습니다. 저도 마찬가지였고요.

For all of human history,

모든 인간의 역사에서 보면

illness has been universal and access to care has not.

질병은 어느 곳에나 존재하지만 누구나 치료를 받을 수는 없었습니다.

But as a wise man once told me:

하지만 현명한 제 아버지가 말씀하셨듯이

no condition is permanent.

어떤 환경도 바뀔 수 있습니다.

It's time.

바로 지금이지요.

It's time for us to go as far as it takes

바로 지금 우리는 이 환경을 바꾸기 위해서

to change this condition together.

함께 노력할 때입니다.
