Ash Beckham: When to take a stand -- and when to let it go

This summer I was back in Ohio for a family wedding,

And they were not about to miss out on the opportunity

that was the phenomenon and that was "Frozen."

So they get hired by a local toy store,

kids come in on a Saturday morning,

It's like Santa Claus without the seasonal restrictions.

And my three-and-a-half-year-old niece Samantha was in the thick of it.

제 3살 배기 조카 사만다가 그런 것을 한창 좋아했습니다.

She could care less that these two women were signing posters and coloring books

'눈의 여왕'과, 저작권을 피하려 철자를 하나 뺀 '아나' 공주가

as Snow Queen and Princess Ana with one N to avoid copyright lawsuits.

포스터와 색칠 책에 사인을 했지만 제 조카는 별로 신경 쓰지 않았죠.

According to my niece and the 200-plus kids in the parking lot that day,

그 날 주차장에 있었던 200명이 넘는 아이들과 제 조카에게는

this was the Anna and Elsa from "Frozen."

It is a blazing hot Saturday morning in August in Ohio.

We get there at 10 o'clock, the scheduled start time,

and we are handed number 59.

By 11 o'clock they had called numbers 21 through 25;

this was going to be a while,

and there is no amount of free face painting or temporary tattoos

that could prevent the meltdowns that were occurring outside of the store.

So, by 12:30 we get called:

And as we walk in, it is a scene I can only describe you

as saying it looked like Norway threw up.

There were cardboard cut-out snowflakes covering the floor,

glitter on every flat surface, and icicles all over the walls.

온통 반짝이 가루에, 벽에는 고드름이 잔뜩 달려 있었습니다.

And as we stood in line

아무튼 줄을 서 있을 때

in an attempt to give my niece a better vantage point

58번 엄마의 엉덩이만 보는 대신

than the backside of the mother of number 58,

앞을 더 잘 보게 해주려고

I put her up on my shoulders,

and she was instantly riveted by the sight of the princesses.

조카의 시선은 즉시 공주들에게로 고정되었죠.

And as we moved forward, her excitement only grew,

저희가 앞으로 감에 따라 조카는 점점 더 들떴어요.

and as we finally got to the front of the line,

마침내 줄 앞쪽에 다다랐을 때,

and number 58 unfurled her poster to be signed by the princesses,

I could literally feel the excitement running through her body.

And let's be honest, at that point, I was pretty excited too.

I mean, the Scandinavian decadence was mesmerizing.

And I was, for a lack of a better word, frozen.

It's amazing that in an unexpected instant we are faced with the question,

who am I?

Am I an aunt? Or am I an advocate?

나는 이모인가? 아니면 운동가인가?

Millions of people have seen my video about how to have a hard conversation,

and there one was, right in front of me.

여기, 바로 제 앞에 그런 상황이 펼쳐졌죠.

At the same time,

그런데 동시에,

there's nothing more important to me than the kids in my life,

제 인생에 아이들 만큼 중요한 것은 없었기에

so I found myself in a situation that we so often find ourselves in,

torn between two things, two impossible choices.

두 가지 사이의 불일치, 두 가지 불가능한 선택의 상황이요.

Would I be an advocate?

제가 운동가인가요?

Would I take my niece off my shoulders and turn to the clerk and explain to her

제가 조카를 어깨에서 내려놓고 직원에게 가서 그녀에게

that I was in fact her aunt, not her father,

나는 사실 아버지가 아니라 이모고,

and that she should be more careful

좀 더 조심스럽게 행동하시는 것이 좋겠다고 해야 했을까요?

and not to jump to gender conclusions based on haircuts and shoulder rides --

머리 모양과 아이를 어깨에 태운 것으로 성별을 결론짓지 말라고요?

(Laughter) --

and while doing that,

(웃음)

그러는 동안,

miss out on what was, to this point, the greatest moment of my niece's life.

조카 인생에서 최고의 순간을 놓치게 되고 맙니다.

Or would I be an aunt?

Would I brush off that comment, take a million pictures,

and not be distracted for an instant from the pure joy of that moment,

and by doing that,

especially in front of my niece.

Who was I?

Which one was more important? Which role was more worth it?

Was I an aunt? Or was I an advocate?

저는 이모였나요? 아니면 운동가였나요?

And I had a split second to decide.

결정할 수 있는 시간은 짧았습니다.

We are taught right now

우리는 이 순간

that we are living in a world of constant and increasing polarity.

끊임없고 또 증가하는 양극성의 세상에 살고 있다고 배웠습니다.

It's so black and white, so us and them, so right and wrong.

흑이냐 백이냐, 우리냐 너희냐, 옳으냐 그르냐의 문제입니다.

There is no middle, there is no gray, just polarity.

중간은 없습니다. 회색은 없고 다만 양극단이 있을 뿐이죠.

Polarity is a state in which two ideas or opinions

양극성은 두 가지 생각이나 의견이

are completely opposite from each other;

서로에게 완전히 반대되는 상황입니다.

a diametrical opposition.

매우 극적인 대립이죠.

여러분은 어느 쪽인가요?

Which side are you on?

명백하고 의문의 여지 없는 반전 주의자, 임신 중절 찬성파, 사형제 반대론자,

Are you unequivocally and without question antiwar, pro-choice, anti-death penalty,

pro-gun regulation, proponent of open borders and pro-union?

총기 규제 지지자, 국경 개방 지지자, 노조 지지자인가요?

Or, are you absolutely and uncompromisingly

아니면, 완전하고 강경한

pro-war, pro-life, pro-death penalty,

전쟁 지지자, 낙태 반대론자, 사형제 지지자,

a believer that the Second Amendment is absolute,

헌법 수정 제2조가 완벽하다고 믿는 사람,

anti-immigrant and pro-business?

이민 반대자, 기업 옹호자인가요?

It's all or none, you're with us or against us.

That is polarity.

The problem with polarity and absolutes is that

it eliminates the individuality of our human experience

But if we are pulled in these two directions,

I don't think it's an unattainable, harmonious utopia,

I think the opposite of polarity is duality.

Duality is a state of having two parts,

Here are the people I know:

I know Catholics who are pro-choice, and feminists who wear hijabs,

and veterans who are antiwar,

and NRA members who think I should be able to get married.

Those are the people I know, those are my friends and family,

that is the majority of our society, that is you, that is me.

Duality is the ability to hold both things.

But the question is: Can we own our duality?

Can we have the courage to hold both things?

우리는 두 가지를 모두 긍정할 용기를 낼 수 있을까요?

I work at a restaurant in town,

저는 시내 음식점에서 일하는데,

I became really good friends with the busser.

주방 일을 보는 종업원과 정말 친한 친구가 되었습니다.

I was a server and we had a great relationship,

저는 서빙을 했고 우리는 친해졌습니다.

we had a really great time together.

함께 정말 좋은 시간을 보냈죠.

Her Spanish was great

그녀는 스페인어를 참 잘 했는데

because she was from Mexico.

멕시코에서 왔기 때문이었죠.

(Laughter)

That line actually went the other way.

그 점은 사실 다른 방향으로도 볼 수 있죠.

Her English was limited, but significantly better than my Spanish.

그녀의 영어 실력은 완벽하진 않았지만 제 스페인어 보다는 훨씬 나았어요.

But we were united by our similarities,

하지만 저희는 서로의 공통점으로 하나될 수 있었습니다.

not separated by our differences.

차이점으로 인해 멀어진 것이 아니라요.

And we were close, even though we came from very different worlds.

서로 다른 세상에서 살았지만 가까워질 수 있었습니다.

She was from Mexico,

she left her family behind so she could come here

and afford them a better life back home.

She was a devout conservative Catholic,

a believer in traditional family values,

stereotypical roles of men and women,

남자와 여자의 역할에 대한 고정관념을 믿는 사람이었습니다.

and I was, well, me.

그리고 저는, 음, 그러니까 저였죠.

(Laughter)

But the things that bonded us were when she asked about my girlfriend,

하지만 그녀가 제게 여자친구에 대해 물어보거나

or she shared pictures that she had from her family back home.

가족 사진을 보여주었을 때 저희 사이에 유대감이 형성되었습니다.

Those were the things that brought us together.

이런 것들이 우리를 함께 하게 해주었죠.

So one day, we were in the back,

scarfing down food as quickly as we could, gathered around a small table,

during a very rare lull,

and a new guy from the kitchen came over --

who happened to be her cousin --

and sat down with all the bravado and machismo

그리고 자리에 앉았죠. 20살의 육체가 가질 수 있는

that his 20-year-old body could hold.

모든 허세와, 남자다움에 대한 과시를 다 담은 채로요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And he said to her, [in Spanish] "Does Ash have a boyfriend?"

그가 그녀에게 말했습니다. [스페인어] "애쉬는 남자친구 있어?"

And she said, [in Spanish] "No, she has a girlfriend."

그녀가 답했죠. [스페인어] "아니, 여자친구가 있어."

And he said, [in Spanish] "A girlfriend?!?"

그가 되물었습니다. [스페인어] "여자친구?"

And she set down her fork, and locked eyes with him,

그녀는 포크를 내려놓고 그를 똑바로 바라보았습니다.

and said, [in Spanish] "Yes, a girlfriend. That is all."

그리고 말했죠. [스페인어] "그래, 여자친구. 그 뿐이야."

And his smug smile quickly dropped to one of maternal respect,

그는 우쭐대던 웃음을 거두고 어머니의 말씀에 따르듯 행동했습니다.

grabbed his plate, walked off, went back to work.

자기 그릇을 들고, 그 자리를 벗어나 일을 하러 돌아갔습니다.

She never made eye contact with me.

그녀는 저와는 눈을 맞추지 않았습니다.

She left, did the same thing --

그녀는 그 자리에 남아 하던 일을 계속 했습니다.

it was a 10-second conversation, such a short interaction.

10초 정도의 짧은 대화였고, 짧은 만남이었습니다.

And on paper, she had so much more in common with him:

겉보기에는, 그녀는 그와 공유하고 있는 것이 더 많았죠.

언어, 문화, 역사, 가족, 공동체가 그녀를 지탱하는 것들이었죠.

language, culture, history, family, her community was her lifeline here,

but her moral compass trumped all of that.

하지만 그녀의 도덕적 기준이 그 모든 것보다 우선했습니다.

And a little bit later, they were joking around in the kitchen in Spanish,

that had nothing to do with me,

and that is duality.

She didn't have to choose some P.C. stance on gayness over her heritage.

She didn't have to choose her family over our friendship.

우정을 버리고 가족을 선택한 것도 아닙니다.

It wasn't Jesus or Ash.

Her individual morality was so strongly rooted

that she had the courage to hold both things.

Our moral integrity is our responsibility

and we must be prepared to defend it even when it's not convenient.

That's what it means to be an ally, and if you're going to be an ally,

you have to be an active ally:

Ask questions, act when you hear something inappropriate,

I had a family friend who for years used to call my girlfriend my lover.

가족의 친구 한 명은 제 여자친구를 수년간 제 애인이라고만 칭했습니다.

Really? Lover?

So overly sexual,

지나치게 성적이고

so '70s gay porn.

지나치게 70년대 동성애 포르노 같죠.

(Laughter)

하지만 그녀는 노력하고 있었습니다. 그래서 저에게 물었습니다.

But she was trying, and she asked.

She could have called her my friend,

그녀를 제 친구라고 부르거나,

or my "friend," or my "special friend" --

or even worse, just not asked at all.

Believe me, we would rather have you ask.

I would rather have her say lover, than say nothing at all.

People often say to me, "Well, Ash, I don't care.

I don't see race or religion or sexuality.

It doesn't matter to me. I don't see it."

But I think the opposite of homophobia and racism and xenophobia is not love,

it's apathy.

If you don't see my gayness, then you don't see me.

If it doesn't matter to you who I sleep with,

then you cannot imagine what it feels like

when I walk down the street late at night holding her hand,

and approach a group of people and have to make the decision

if I should hang on to it or if I should I drop it

when all I want to do is squeeze it tighter.

And the small victory I feel

when I make it by and don't have to let go.

And the incredible cowardice and disappointment I feel when I drop it.

If you do not see that struggle

that is unique to my human experience because I am gay, then you don't see me.

If you are going to be an ally, I need you to see me.

여러분이 지지자가 되어 주시겠다면 저를 올바르게 봐주셔야 합니다.

As individuals, as allies, as humans,

개인으로, 지지자로, 한 사람으로서

we need to be able to hold both things:

우리는 두 가지를 모두 품을 수 있습니다.

both the good and the bad,

선한 것과 악한 것,

the easy and the hard.

쉬운 것과 어려운 것 모두요.

You don't learn how to hold two things just from the fluff,

두 가지 모두를 품는 방법은 그냥 알게 되는 것이 아닙니다.

you learn it from the grit.

애써 의지를 가짐으로써 배울 수 있죠.

And what if duality is just the first step?

만약 이원성이 그저 출발선에 불과하다면요?

What if through compassion and empathy and human interaction

사람의 관계에 대한 동정과 공감으로부터

we are able to learn to hold two things?

우리가 두 가지를 모두 품는 방법을 배운다면요?

And if we can hold two things, we can hold four,

만약 우리가 두 가지를 품을 수 있다면 네 가지도 할 수 있습니다.

and if we can hold four, we can hold eight,

네 가지를 품을 수 있다면 여덟 가지도 할 수 있습니다.

and if we can hold eight, we can hold hundreds.

We are complex individuals,

우리는 모두 복잡한 개성을 지니고 있습니다.

swirls of contradiction.

모순의 소용돌이죠.

You are all holding so many things right now.

여러분은 지금도 너무나 많은 것들을 한꺼번에 품고 있습니다.

What can you do to hold just a few more?

다만 거기서 몇 가지를 더 품기 위해서 무슨 일을 할 수 있을까요?

So, back to Toledo, Ohio.

I'm at the front of the line,

niece on my shoulders, the frazzled clerk calls me Dad.

Have you ever been mistaken for the wrong gender?

성별을 착각당해 본 적 있으신가요?

그렇게만 볼 것이 아니죠.

Not even that.

Have you ever been called something you are not?

당신이 아닌 그 무엇으로 불려본 적이 있으신가요?

Here's what it feels like for me:

저에게는 이런 느낌이었습니다.

I am instantly an internal storm of contrasting emotions.

저는 그 순간 상반된 감정의 내적 폭풍 속에 있었습니다.

I break out into a sweat that is a combination of rage and humiliation,

분노와 굴욕으로 땀이 쏟아졌고

I feel like the entire store is staring at me,

마치 가게 전체가 저를 바라보고 있는 것 같았습니다.

and I simultaneously feel invisible.

저는 동시에 존재 자체가 무시당하는 기분이 들었습니다.

분노에 차서 신랄한 비난을 퍼붓고 싶었습니다.

I want to explode in a tirade of fury,

and I want to crawl under a rock.

동시에 바위 밑에라도 기어들어가고 싶었습니다.

And top all of that off with the frustration that I'm wearing

그 모든 것 외에도 무엇보다 실망감도 느꼈죠.

취향이 아니지만 딱 붙는 보라색 티셔츠를 입고

an out-of-character tight-fitting purple t-shirt,

가게에 있는 사람들이 누구나 제 가슴을 볼 수 있어서

so this whole store can see my boobs,

to make sure this exact same thing doesn't happen.

But, despite my best efforts to be seen as the gender I am,

올바른 성별로 보이려는 제 모든 노력에도 불구하고

it still happens.

여전히 이런 일은 일어납니다.

And I hope with every ounce of my body that no one heard --

그리고 저는 누구도 상처받지 않기를 간절히 바랐죠.

not my sister, not my girlfriend, and certainly not my niece.

제 자매도, 여자친구도, 물론 제 조카도요.

I am accustomed to this familiar hurt,

저는 이런 식의 상처에 익숙한 편이지만

but I will do whatever I need to do to protect the people I love from it.

제가 사랑하는 사람들이 상처받지 않게 할 수 있다면 무엇이든 할 겁니다.

But then I take my niece off my shoulders,

하지만 저는 조카를 어깨에서 내려주었고

and she runs to Elsa and Anna --

조카는 엘사와 안나에게 달려갔습니다.

the thing she's been waiting so long for --

and all that stuff goes away.

All that matters is the smile on her face.

And as the 30 seconds we waited two and a half hours for comes to a close

we gather up our things, and I lock eyes with the clerk again;

and she gives me an apologetic smile and mouths,

"I am so sorry!"

"정말 죄송합니다!"

And her humanity, her willingness to admit her mistake disarms me immediately,

그 인간적인 모습, 실수를 기꺼이 인정하는 모습에 즉시 화가 풀렸습니다.

then I give her a: "It's okay, it happens. But thanks."

그래서 답했죠. "괜찮아요. 있을 수 있는 일이죠. 하지만 고마워요."

And I realize in that moment

그리고 저는 깨달았습니다.

그 순간 저는

that I don't have to be

이모거나 지지자가 아니라 둘 모두일 수 있다는 것을요.

either an aunt or an advocate, I can be both.

I can live in duality, and I can hold two things.

이원성을 가지고 살 수 있고, 두 가지를 모두 지닐 수 있음을요.

And if I can hold two things in that environment,

그리고 제가 두 가지를 동시에 지닐 수 있는 환경에서라면

I can hold so many more things.

더 많은 것들을 지닐 수도 있음을 알게 되었습니다.

As my girlfriend and my niece hold hands and skip out the front of the door,

여자친구와 조카가 손을 잡고 앞쪽 문으로 나간 다음,

I turn to my sister and say, "Was it worth it?"

제 언니에게 물었습니다. "이럴 가치가 있는 일이었을까?"

And she said, "Are you kidding me?

그녀는 답했죠. "농담하는 거야?

Did you see the look on her face? This was the greatest day of her life!"

아이 얼굴 못 봤어? 걔 인생에 최고의 날이야!"

"It was worth the two and a half hours in the heat,

"무더위 속에서 두 시간 반을 기다릴 가치가 있었어.

it was worth the overpriced coloring book that we already had a copy of."

이미 가지고있는 색칠 책을 바가지 쓰고 살 가치도 있었지."

"It was even worth you getting called Dad."

"심지어 내 자매가 아빠라는 소리를 들을 가치도 있었고."

And for the first time ever in my life, it actually was.
