I once had this nightmare:

but every time I want to go on a hike, it makes me nervous.

I have this thought in the back of my mind

팔다리를 잃을지 모른다는 생각이

that I might lose a limb.

마음 한 구석에 있거든요.

This underlying fear started 10 years ago,

이런 잠재적인 공포가 시작된 건 10년 전입니다.

after I met Mohammed, a cluster bomb survivor

집속탄 폭격의 생존자인 모하메드를 만난 후부터였죠.

of the summer 2006 Israel-Hezbollah War in Lebanon.

그는 2006년 여름, 레바논에서 일어난 이스라엘 헤즈볼라 전쟁의 생존자입니다.

Mohammed, like so many other survivors all around the world,

전세계의 생존자와 마찬가지로 모하메드는

had to live through the horrifying repercussions of cluster munitions

집속탄 폭격의 끔찍한 여파를 매일 견디며 살아가야 합니다.

on a daily basis.

When the one-month conflict started in Lebanon,

레바논에서 한 달간의 분쟁이 있을 당시

I was still working at Agence France-Presse in Paris.

저는 파리의 아쟝스 프랑스 프레스에서 일하고 있었습니다.

I remember how I was glued to the screens,

화면에서 눈을 떼지 못하고

anxiously following the news.

애태우며 뉴스를 보던 게 기억납니다.

I wanted to reassure myself

스스로를 안심시키고 싶었어요.

that the falling bombs missed my parents' home.

제 부모님의 집에는 폭탄이 떨어지지 않을 거라고요.

When I arrived in Beirut on assignment to cover that war,

전쟁 취재를 위해 베이루트에 도착해서는

I was relieved to be united with my family,

가족들과 다시 만나 안심이 되었습니다.

after they had finally managed to escape southern Lebanon.

가족들이 남부 레바논을 마침내 빠져나온 뒤였죠.

The day the war was over,

전쟁이 끝나던 날

I remember seeing this image --

이런 사진을 본 게 기억납니다.

one of blocked roads,

막힌 도로에서

of displaced people eagerly rushing south, back to their homes,

갈 곳 잃은 사람들이 고향으로 가려고 간절히 남부로 향하고 있었죠.

regardless of what they would find.

앞으로 닥칠 일은 개의치 않았습니다.

An estimated four million cluster submunitions

400만 개로 추정되는 집속탄 폭격이

were spread in Lebanon during the 34-day conflict.

34일 간의 분쟁 기간 동안 레바논을 덮쳤습니다.

Mohammed lost both legs during the last week of the conflict.

모하메드는 전쟁이 끝나기 일주일 전에 두 다리를 잃었습니다.

The fact that he lives a five-minute drive from my parents' home

그가 사는 곳이 제 부모님 집에서 차로 5분 거리에 있었기에

made it easier to follow him through the years.

It was now almost 10 years since we first met.

이제 만난 지 거의 10년이 되었네요.

I saw the young boy

저는 그 어린 소년이

who had to endure physical and emotional trauma.

신체적 정신적 트라우마를 견뎌야 했던 과정을 지켜보았습니다.

I saw the teenager who tried to offer his friends tattoos,

5달러를 벌기 위해 친구들에게 문신을 해주던 십대 시기도 보았고,

in return for a set fee of five dollars.

And I know the young, jobless man who spends hours surfing the Internet

직업 없는 청년이 되어 몇 시간 동안 인터넷을 뒤지며

trying to meet a girl who might become his girlfriend.

여자친구가 될 사람을 찾던 것도 알고 있습니다.

His fate and the effects of losing his legs

그의 운명과 다리를 잃은 결과는

are now his daily reality.

이제 그의 일상적인 현실입니다.

Survivors of bomb trauma like Mohammed

모하메드같은 폭탄 트라우마의 생존자는

have to deal with so many details that never occur to us.

우리에게는 일어나지 않을 수많은 일들을 겪어야 합니다.

Who would have imagined

누군들 상상이나 했겠어요.

that so many daily tasks we do or take for granted,

우리가 매일 하는 일이나 당연하게 여기는 것들,

such as going to the beach or even picking up something from the floor,

would become sources of stress and anxiety?

스트레스와 불안 요소가 될 줄 알았을까요.

Well, that's what eventually became of Mohammed,

그게 결국 모하메드의 일상이 됐습니다.

due to his inflexible prosthetic legs.

구부릴 수 없는 의족 때문이죠.

Ten years ago, I had no clue what a cluster bomb was,

10년 전에는 저는 집속탄이 뭔지도 몰랐고

nor its horrifying implications.

그 끔찍한 의미도 몰랐습니다.

I learned that this indiscriminate weapon was used

이런 무차별 살상무기가

in so many parts of the world

세계 곳곳에서 쓰였고

and continues to kill on a regular basis,

빈번하게 살상이 이루어지고 있다는 걸 알았습니다.

without distinguishing between a military target

군사적 목표와 아이를 가리지 않고 말이죠.

or a child.

I naively asked myself,

저는 순진하게도 자문해봤습니다.

"But seriously, who made those weapons?

"아니 대체 누가 이런 무기를 만드는 걸까?"

And what for?"

"어떤 목적으로?"

Let me explain to you what a cluster bomb is.

집속탄이 뭔지 설명해 드리겠습니다.

It's a large canister filled with bomblets.

이것은 소형폭탄이 가득 든 커다란 통입니다.

When it's dropped from the air,

비행기에서 투하되면

it opens up in midair to release hundreds of bomblets.

공중에서 열리면서 수백 개의 소형폭탄을 방출합니다.

They scatter around wide areas

넓은 지역에 흩어져 타격하지만

and on impact,

many fail to explode.

터지지 않는 폭탄도 많죠.

Those unexploded ones end up just like landmines --

불발탄들은 지뢰처럼 지면에 남아

sitting on the ground,

waiting for their next target.

다음 표적물을 기다립니다.

If someone steps on them by accident

누군가 어쩌다 밟기라도 하거나 그걸 주우면

or picks them up,

they can explode.

폭발할 수 있습니다.

These weapons are extremely unpredictable,

이 무기들은 예측이 매우 어렵다는 점에서

which makes the threat even bigger.

위험성이 훨씬 더 높습니다.

One day, a farmer can work his land without a problem.

어느 날, 한 농부가 별일 없이 자기 밭에서 일하다가

The next day, he can make fire and burn some branches,

어떤 날에는 가지 몇 개를 불을 내서 태우기도 하겠죠.

and the submunitions close by could be set off because of the heat.

그럼 근처에 있던 폭탄들이 열로 인해 폭발할 수 있습니다.

The problem is children mistake those bomblets for toys,

문제는 아이들이 소형폭탄을 장난감으로 착각한다는 겁니다.

because they can look like bouncy balls or soda cans.

그게 탱탱볼이나 깡통처럼 생겼거든요.

Being a documentary photographer,

다큐멘터리 사진작가로서

I decided to go back to Lebanon a few months after the conflict ended

저는 분쟁이 끝난 몇 달 후에 레바논으로 다시 가서

to meet cluster bomb survivors.

집속탄 피해 생존자들을 만났습니다.

And I met a few --

몇 명 만났는데요.

Hussein and Rasha,

후세인과 라샤는

who both lost a leg to submunitions.

둘 다 폭탄에 다리를 잃었습니다.

Their stories are similar to so many other kids' stories across the world

그들의 사연은 세상의 많은 다른 아이들의 이야기와 비슷합니다.

and are a testimony to the horrifying implications

그런 무기를 계속 사용하면서 빚어진 끔찍한 결과를 증언해주고 있죠.

of the continuous use of such weapons.

That's when I met Mohammed, in January 2007.

그때, 2007년 1월에 모하메드를 만났습니다.

He was 11 years old,

그는 11살이었고

and I met him exactly four months after his accident.

사고를 당한 지 정확히 4개월 뒤였습니다.

When I first saw him,

처음 그를 봤을 때

he was going through painful physiotherapy

고통스러운 물리치료를 견디며

to recover from his fresh wounds.

막 입은 부상에서 회복하려는 중이었죠.

Still in shock at such a young age,

그렇게 어린 나이에 충격을 받아서

Mohammed was struggling to get used to his new body.

모하메드는 변해버린 몸에 적응하느라 애를 썼습니다.

He would even wake up sometimes at night wanting to scratch his lost feet.

심지어 한밤중에 일어나 없어진 다리를 긁으려고 하기도 했습니다.

What drew me closer to his story was my instant realization

모하메드의 사연에 더욱 관심을 갖게 된 것은

앞으로 닥칠 모하메드의 어려움이 바로 보였기 때문이었습니다.

of the difficulties Mohammed was likely to face in the future --

that what he has been suffering while adjusting to his injury

11살의 나이로 부상에 적응하면서

at the age of 11,

겪어온 어려움들이

would increase manyfold.

앞으로 몇 배는 더할 것 같았습니다.

Even before his disability,

장애가 있기 전에도

Mohammed's life wasn't easy.

모하메드의 삶은 녹녹지 않았습니다.

He was born in the Rashidieh Camp for Palestinian refugees,

그는 팔레스타인 난민을 위한 라쉬디에 캠프에서 태어났고

and this is where he still lives.

아직도 그곳에서 살고 있습니다.

Lebanon holds some 400,000 Palestinian refugees,

레바논에는 40만 명의 팔레스타인 난민이 있으며

and they suffer from discriminatory laws.

They're not allowed to work in the public sector

or practice certain professions

and are denied the right to own property.

This is one of the reasons

why Mohammed doesn't really regret dropping out of school

right after his injury.

He said, "What's the point of a university degree

그는 이런 말을 했습니다. "대학 학위가 무슨 소용이겠어요?

when I can't find a job to start with?"

직업을 구할 수도 없는걸요."

Cluster bomb use creates a vicious circle of impact on communities,

집속탄 사용은 지역 공동체에도 악순환을 가져옵니다.

and not only the lives of their victims.

희생자의 삶뿐만이 아니에요.

Many who get injured by this weapon drop out of school,

이런 무기로 부상당한 사람들이 학교를 그만 두고

can't find jobs or even lose their jobs,

직업을 구할 수 없거나 심지어 실직하기도 합니다.

therefore losing the ability to provide for their families.

그래서 가족을 부양할 능력을 상실하죠.

This is not to mention the continuous physical pain

계속되는 신체적인 고통과

and the experience of feeling isolated.

고립된 느낌은 말할 것도 없지요.

These weapons affect the poorest of the poor.

이런 무기들은 극빈곤 계층의 사람들에게 영향을 미칩니다.

The high medical cost is a burden to the families.

높은 의료 비용은 그 가족에게 짐이 되죠.

They end up relying on humanitarian agencies,

결국 구호 단체에 의지하게 되는데

which is insufficient and unsustainable,

그것은 부족하고 지속적이지도 않죠.

especially when injuries require lifelong support to the injured.

특히 평생 치료가 필요한 부상일 때는 더욱 그렇습니다.

Ten years after Mohammed's injury,

모하메드가 다친 후 10년이 되었지만

he is still unable to afford proper prosthetic legs.

아직도 제대로 된 의족을 살 여유가 없습니다.

He's very cautious with his steps,

그는 걸음을 딛을 때 매우 조심합니다.

as a couple of falls over the years

수년 간 몇 번 넘어지고서

brought him embarrassment among his friends.

친구들 사이에서 창피를 당했죠.

He joked that since he doesn't have legs,

어떤 때는 장난으로, 다리가 없으니

some days he tries to walk on his hands.

손으로 걸어보려고 하기도 했습니다.

One of the worst yet invisible impacts of the weapon

이 무기의 드러나지 않는 악영향은

is the psychological scars it leaves.

깊은 심리적인 상처입니다.

In one of Mohammed's early medical reports,

모하메드의 초기 의료기록에는

he was diagnosed with signs of PTSD.

외상후 증후군(PTSD) 증상이 보인다는 진단이 있었습니다.

He suffered from anxiety, poor appetite, sleep disturbance

불안, 식욕부진, 수면 장애

and showed signs of anger.

그리고 분노 증상들로 고통받았죠.

The reality is Mohammed never received proper help to fully recover.

사실, 모하메드는 충분히 회복할 수 있는 적절한 도움을 받은 적이 없습니다.

His current obsession is to leave Lebanon at any cost --

현재 그는 어떻게 해서라도 레바논을 떠나는 게 소원입니다.

even if it meant embarking on a hazardous journey

그게 어려운 여정이 될지라도요.

along with refugees drifting towards Europe today through the Mediterranean.

지중해를 건너 유럽으로 표류하는 난민들의 여정이죠.

Knowing how risky such a journey would be,

그런 여정이 얼마나 위험한지 알면서

he said, "If I were to die on the way,

"가다가 죽더라도, 상관없어요." 라고 합니다.

it doesn't matter."

To Mohammed, he is dead here, anyway.

모하메드에게는 여기서도 죽은 거나 다름 없으니까요.

Cluster bombs are a world problem,

집속탄은 세계적 문제입니다.

as this munition keeps destroying and hurting whole communities

이 폭탄은 전체 공동체를 계속 파괴하고 해를 입힙니다.

for generations to come.

미래 세대에까지 계속되죠.

In an online interview with the director of the Mines Advisory Group,

지뢰 자문단체의 책임자인 제이미 프랭클린과의 온라인 인터뷰에서

Jamie Franklin,

he said,

그가 말하길

"The US forces dropped over two million tons of munitions over Laos.

미군은 라오스에 2백만 톤의 폭탄을 쏟아부었다고 해요.

If they couldn't find their targets in Vietnam,

베트남에서 목표물을 찾지 못했다면

there were free-drop areas in Laos where planes would drop their loads

라오스에 자유투하 지역이 있어서

before going back to base,

because it's dangerous to land with loaded planes."

폭탄을 실은 채로 착륙하는 게 위험하니까요.

According to the International Committee of the Red Cross,

국제 적십자회에 따르면

in Laos alone -- one of the poorest countries in the world --

세계 최빈국 중 하나인 라오스에만

nine to 27 million unexploded submunitions remain.

9백에서 2천7백만 개의 불발탄이 남아있다고 합니다.

Some 11,000 people have been killed or injured since 1973.

1973년 이후로 만천 명이 죽거나 다쳤습니다.

This lethal weapon has been used by over 20 states during armed conflicts

20개 정부가 이런 치명적인 무기를 35개국의 무장 분쟁에서 사용했습니다.

in over 35 countries,

such as Ukraine, Iraq and Sudan.

우크라이나, 이라크와 수단 같은 곳이죠.

So far, 119 states have joined an international treaty

지금까지 119개 정부가 집속탄을 금지하는 국제 조약에 가입했습니다.

banning cluster bombs,

which is officially called the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

집속탄 금지 협약이라는 공식 명칭이 있습니다.

But some of the biggest producers of cluster munitions --

하지만 집속탄의 최대 생산국인

namely, the United States, Russia and China --

미국, 러시아와 중국 등의 나라는

remain outside of this lifesaving treaty

이런 생명을 구하는 조약에서 빠져있고

and continue to produce them,

무기를 계속 생산하면서

reserve the right to produce them in the future,

앞으로도 생산할 권리를 고수하고 있습니다.

keep those harmful weapons in their stockpiles

그렇게 해악한 무기를 비축하고

and even possibly use them in the future.

심지어 앞으로도 사용할지도 모릅니다.

Cluster bombs have reportedly been used most recently

보도에 따르면 최근에는

in the ongoing conflicts in Yemen and Syria.

분쟁중인 예멘과 시리아에서 집속탄이 사용됐다고 합니다.

According to research on the worldwide investments

집속탄 생산에 대한 세계 투자에 관해서

in cluster munitions producers

by Pax, a Dutch-based NGO,

네덜란드 민간단체인 팍스가 조사한 결과에 따르면

financial institutions invested billions of US dollars

금융기관들이 수십억 달러를

into companies that make cluster munitions.

집속탄 제조 회사에 투자했다고 합니다.

The majority of these institutions are based in countries

이런 기관의 대다수는

집속탄 금지 협약에 가입하지 않은 나라에 있습니다.

that have not yet signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

Getting back to Mohammed,

모하메드의 이야기로 돌아와서

one of the few jobs he was able to find was picking lemons.

그가 할 수 있는 그나마의 일이 레몬따기입니다.

When I ask him if it's safe to work in the field he said,

밭에서 일하는 게 위험하지 않냐고 물었더니

"I'm not sure."

"잘 모르겠어요." 라고 했습니다.

Research shows that cluster munitions often contaminate areas

연구에 따르면

집속탄이 농사가 주 수입원인 지역을 오염시킨다고 합니다.

where agriculture is the main source of income.

According to Handicap International's research,

국제 장애협회 연구에 따르면

98 percent of those killed or injured by cluster munitions are civilians.

집속탄 사망자와 부상자의 98%가 민간인이라고 합니다.

Eighty-four percent of casualties are males.

사상자의 84%가 남성이고요.

In countries where these people have no choice

그런 땅에 가서 일할 수밖에 없는 이런 사람들은

but to work in those fields,

they simply do it

그저 일을 하고

and risk it.

위험을 감수합니다.

Mohammed is the only male to three sisters.

모하메드는 여동생 셋이 있고, 그는 유일한 남자형제입니다.

Culturally, he's expected to provide for his family,

그들 문화에서는 그가 가정을 부양해야 하지만

but he simply can't.

그는 할 수가 없습니다.

He tried to have so many different jobs,

여러가지 일을 구해보려고 했지만

but he couldn't keep any due to his physical disability

신체장애와 장애인에 비우호적인 분위기 때문에

and the less-than-friendly environment to people with disabilities,

어떤 일도 구할 수가 없었습니다.

to say the least.

It hurts him a lot when he goes out looking for a job,

일자리를 구하면서 많은 상처를 받습니다.

and he's turned away

불쌍하다고 푼돈을 주며 쫓아내죠.

with a small amount of money paid to him out of pity.

He said, "I'm not here to beg for money,

그는 "저는 구걸하러 온 게 아니에요.

I just want to earn it."

돈을 벌고 싶어서 온 거예요." 라고 말합니다.

Mohammed today is 21 years old.

이제 모하메드는 21살입니다.

He's illiterate,

그는 문맹이어서

and he communicates with voice messages.
