What can we learn from children about being better humans?

They're fiercely loyal to their friends,

But as a past kindergarten teacher --

I want to share with you

여러분과 함께

a surprising lesson I learned from them about being asked for help.

아이들에게 배운 도움을 요청하는 법을 공유하고자 합니다.

I love human behaviors --

저는 사람의 행동에 흥미가 많습니다.

how we act differently in different situations and environments --

상황과 환경에 따라 다르게 행동하고

and these cute five-year-olds with their adorable cheeks

5살에 귀여운 볼살을 갖고 있고

and the perfect height to give warm, morning hugs to

따뜻한 포옹을 주기에는 안성맞춤인 키에

and almost a competitive love for high fives,

하이파이브를 하는 것을 경쟁적일 정도로 좋아하는

were so interesting.

아이들은 상당히 흥미로웠죠.

My first class was called a Mars class.

제 첫 교실은 화성 반이라고 불렸습니다.

I had 10 students,

10명의 학생이 있었고

and each were so full of character.

모두가 개성이 강했습니다.

But there was this one kid I'll never forget.

하지만 절대 잊지 못하는 학생이 한 명 있었습니다.

Let's call him Sam.

그 친구를 '샘'이라고 부르죠.

Sam behaved like he forgot he was only five.

샘은 본인이 5살이 아닌 것처럼 행동을 했습니다.

He was so independent.

매우 독립적이었죠.

Not only did he know how to tie his own shoelaces,

신발 끈을 혼자서 묶을 줄 알았고

but he knew how to tie other kids' shoelaces too.

다른 아이들의 신발 끈도 묶어주었죠.

He also never took home a dirty thermos,

더러워진 보온병을 절대 집에 가져간 적이 없는데

because he would clean it after his lunch.

매번 점심이 지나고 닦았기 때문이죠.

And if something happened and he needed a change of clothes,

만약에 무슨 일이 생기고 옷을 갈아입어야 하는 상황이 오면

he would do so very quietly and discreetly by himself.

조용히 스스로 갈아입었죠.

He didn't ask for help much himself,

스스로 도움을 요청하지 않았지만

but he was the one that his classmates went to for help --

친구들이 매번 도움을 구하러 찾아간 사람은 이 학생이었죠.

help on things like,

도와주는 것이

can he help them finish their kimchi? Because it's too spicy.

김치를 다 먹게 도와줄 수 있는지 그러한 도움이었죠. 너무 맵잖아요.

He didn't like showing any type of affection to teachers

선생님들에게 어떠한 애착도 보이기 싫어해서

and came across as "the cool kid."

'시원한(멋진) 아이'라고 불렸죠.

If you gave him a good-morning hug,

아침 인사로 안아주면

he would roll his eyes

주변을 두리번거리면서

and make a funny face as to show discontent,

우스꽝스러운 얼굴을 만들지만 불만스러운 기색도 보입니다.

but also stand there and wait if he didn't get his morning hug.

하지만 안아주기 전까지 서서 기다리죠.

He was so smart and reliable

머리가 좋고 의지가 되어서

that even I would forget that he was only five.

저도 이 아이가 5살이라는 걸 잊곤 했습니다.

As a novice teacher,

초보 선생님으로서

I spent a lot of time observing

많은 시간을 관찰하는 데 시간을 보냈고

how more experienced teachers interacted with their students.

경험이 많은 선생님들은 학생들과 어떻게 하는지 보았습니다.

And I noticed something very peculiar.

그리고 상당히 이상한 걸 알아챘죠.

Oftentimes when kids fall,

아이들이 넘어질 때마다

they don't start crying immediately.

바로 울기 시작하지 않는다는 점입니다.

They would stand up, puzzled,

일어나서 어리둥절한 표정을 짓고는

as if trying to make up their mind --

마치 마음을 정하려는 듯

you know, "What just happened?"

'방금 무슨 일이 일어났지?'

"Is this a big enough deal for me to cry?

'내가 울 정도로 큰일인가?

Does this hurt? What's going on?"

넘어진 게 아팠나? 무슨 일이지?' 등 생각하는 표정을 짓죠.

Usually kids will be OK until they lock eyes with an adult:

주로 어른에게 눈을 맞추기 전까지는 괜찮습니다.

one that they trust and know can do something for them.

그 어른을 믿을 수 있고 무언가 해줄 수 있는 사람이면

Eyes lock, and then, they burst out in tears.

시선을 고정하고 나서 눈물을 쏟기 시작합니다.

When I noticed this, I so wanted it to happen to me,

제가 이걸 알아차렸을 때 저에게 이렇게 해주었으면 했어요.

because to me, that meant that you had earned a kid's trust

저에게 있어선 아이들의 신뢰를 얻었다는 뜻이니까요.

and had proven that you're capable to help them with anything.

또 무슨 일에서든 아이들을 도울 수 있다고 인정받은 거니까요.

You were a hero to them.

아이들에게 영웅인 거죠.

Weeks went by of me just watching other teachers

선생님들을 관찰하는 데만 몇 주가 지났고

have kids run to them in tears,

아이들은 선생님들에게 울면서 품에 안겼고

and I'd watch in jealousy.

저는 질투의 시선으로 보았죠.

Oh, was I jealous.

너무 질투가 났었어요.

I mean, of course I didn't want the kids to fall,

물론 아이들이 넘어지는 것은 안 되죠.

but I really wanted that moment of validation

하지만 저는 정말로 아이들에게 인정받아

that yes, I had earned a kid's trust enough to be the one to help them.

도움이 될만큼 신뢰를 받는 사람이길 바랬어요.

Then, it finally happened.

그리고 드디어 저에게도 그 순간이 일어납니다.

It was a beautiful day.

아름다운 날이었죠.

It was during recess at the indoor playground.

쉬는 시간 실내 놀이터에서였습니다.

The kids were playing

아이들은 놀고 있었고

and I was getting some things laminated --

저는 물건들을 메꾸고 보수하고 있었어요.

because teachers are forever laminating stuff --

선생님들은 항상 뭔가를 보수해야 하니까요.

in the teacher's room next door.

옆 선생님 방에 있었죠.

Then I heard a kid yell, "Teacher, teacher, Sam fell down."

그때 아이가 말하는 것을 들었습니다. "선생님, 샘이 넘어졌어요."

So I went out to peak,

저는 어떤지 보러 갔죠.

looked around for Sam,

샘을 찾기 위해 주의를 둘러보았고

and there he was, looking very puzzled,

샘은 어리둥절한 표정으로 있었습니다.

as if he was trying to add double digits.

두 자릿수 덧셈 문제를 풀 때처럼요.

Then he looked at me,

그리고 나서 저를 보았죠.

our eyes locked,

시선을 고정하고

and then it happened.

그리고 일이 일어났습니다.

His lower lip started to tremble

그 아이의 아랫입술이 떨리기 시작했고

and his tiny eyes started to fill with tears.

그 작은 눈이 눈물로 차기 시작했죠.

Then he burst out in tears running towards me,

이내 눈물을 쏟으면서 저에게 달려왔죠.

and it was glorious.

영광스러운 순간이었죠.

I'll never forget that moment.

그 순간은 잊을 수 없어요.

He let me give him a big hug to help him calm down,

제가 포옹을 해줘서 진정할 수 있도록 해 주었고

and it turns out that yes, he did trip over his own two feet

알고 보니 본인 발에 걸려 넘어졌었고

so there was no one other than the floor to reprimand.

방바닥 외에 혼낼 대상이 없었죠.

We checked to make sure that he wasn't hurt

아이가 다치지 않았는지 확인했고

and he overcame that with not even a bruise.

작은 멍하나 없이 회복했습니다.

It was in that moment, oddly --

그 순간, 이상하게도

it didn't feel like I was there to help Sam,

제가 샘을 도와주기 위해서 거기에 있던 것이 아니라

but rather he was giving me this gift,

제게 선물을 주기 위해서 있었던 것 같았죠.

this opportunity to help him.

샘을 도울 기회를 제게 준 것이죠.

And it's something very weird that I struggle putting down in words.

제가 말로 표현하기에는 상당히 이상한 것이었죠.

With his vulnerability

그 아이의 연약함으로

in coming to me for help as if I could do something about it,

제가 뭔가 할 수 있는 것처럼 도움을 청하러 오는 것이

you would think that gives me the power,

나 자신에게 힘을 준다고 생각할 수 있습니다.

but in that moment,

하지만 그 순간,

no, it was quite the opposite,

아뇨, 오히려 반대인데

and the power shifted even more so to him.

도움을 청하는 아이에게 힘이 옮겨가는 느낌이죠.

Being asked for help is a privilege:

도움을 요청받는 것은 상당한 특혜죠.

a gift for you to do something for someone,

누군가를 위해 무언가를 할 수 있는 선물이죠.

especially when it's coming from their place of vulnerability.

특히 아이들이 취약할 때 말이죠.

With everything I learned from kindergarten,

제가 유치원에서 배우고

or in "teaching" kindergarten,

또는 가르쳤던 것으로

I went to conquer other things in life.

삶에 다른 것들을 정복하러 갔죠.

Fast-forward nine years,

9년의 앞당기자면

and I landed in an association for project management professionals

프로젝트 관리 전문 협회에 가입하면서

in a role that works extensively with volunteers.

봉사자들과 지속해서 일하는 역할을 맡게 되었습니다.

Working with volunteers is a wonderful experience,

자원봉사자들과 일하는 것은 매우 매력적인 경험입니다.

but there are some things I wish had a been warned about,

하지만 미리 경고를 받았다면 좋았을 법한 것이 있었는데

like how to set boundaries.

어떤 식으로 기준을 세우는 등의 것이죠.

It's very easy to fall into the rabbit hole

"봉사자들이어서" 라고 잘못된 생각에 쉽게

of "because they're volunteers."

빠져들 수 있기 때문이에요.

Late night calls?

심야에 오는 전화?

Yes, because they're volunteers and have day jobs.

네, 왜냐하면 이들은 봉사자들이고 본업이 있는 직장인들이기 때문이죠.

Business trips that are almost exclusively only on weekends?

거의 주말에만 있는 출장은요?

Yes, because they're volunteers and have day jobs.

네, 왜냐하면 이들은 봉사자들이고 본업이 있는 직장인들이기 때문이죠.

Not to pat myself on the back,

스스로 위로하려고 하는 것은 아니지만

but I got quite good at my job.

제가 하는 일에 꽤 잘하는 편이죠.

I was thriving off of the relationships I was building.

제가 이뤄낸 관계를 만끽하고 있었죠.

And the best way I knew how to judge whether I had earned someone's trust

누군가의 신뢰를 얻었는지 판단할 가장 좋은 방법은

was if they would come and ask me for help.

제게 와서 도움을 청하는지 보는 것이었죠.

I loved it.

정말 좋았죠.

Every time we did year-end retreats

저희는 항상 연말에 있었던 일들을 되새겨 보면서

and we talked about what we wanted to be in the next year,

내년에 무엇이 되고 싶은지 얘기하는데

my keywords were always "help" or "helpful."

제 주제는 항상 도움이었습니다.

The problem was that I wasn't being just helpful.

문제는 단순히 도움만 되었던 건 아니었습니다.

Over time, I put more and more pressure on myself

시간이 지나면서 나 스스로 더욱 압박을 가하기 시작해서

to always be busy

항상 바빠지려고 했고

and to always do a good job.

항상 잘하려고 노력했죠.

Soon my self-worth became associated with my performance at work,

곧 제가 일하는 성과에 제 자신감이 관여하기 시작했는데

which is basically a recipe for disaster.

이건 당연히 재앙으로 향하는 지름길이었죠.

But don't worry, because I had the best coping mechanism,

걱정할 필요는 없어요. 저에게는 특출난 대처 방법이 있었는데

which was denial,

부정하고

distraction with even more work

더 많은 일을 하면서 정신을 돌리고

and drinking --

술도 마시고요.

and lots of it.

그것도 많이 마시죠.

I was so busy being helpful and independent

저는 다른 사람에게 도움이 되고 뭐든 혼자서 하기 위해 너무 바빴어요.

and being a great Sam

마치 훌륭한 샘처럼요.

that I forgot how to ask for help when I needed it.

제가 필요로 할 때 도움을 요청하는 것을 잊고 있었죠.

All I had to do was ask,

저는 단순히 물어보면 되었고

and if I truly believed that asking for help was a gift,

도움을 요청하는 행위가 선물이라고 진심으로 생각하게 되면

then I should have been doing it more, right?

더 많이 물어봤어야겠죠, 그렇죠?

Well, we don't always practice what we preach,

우리는 항상 말한 것을 실천하진 않지만

but about two years ago,

약 2년 전에

I was slapped with a big, fat reminder.

묵직한 기억을 기억하게 되죠.

To say that I was burned-out at the time was an understatement,

저는 상당히 지쳐있다고 하기에는 절제된 표현일 정도의 상태였지만

but thanks to my coping mechanism, drinking,

저의 대처 방법인 술로

it looked like I was just having a great time.

겉으로 보이기에는 제가 좋은 시간을 보내는 것처럼 보였죠.

But one day,

하지만 어느 날

just like Sam in the playground,

놀이터에 있던 샘처럼

I tripped over my own two feet.

제 발에 스스로 결려 넘어졌죠.

I blacked out

저는 정신을 잃었고

and woke up with a big cut on my foot from broken pieces of glass,

깨진 유리 때문에 발에 큰 상처가 생긴 채 눈을 떴죠.

eyes swollen from crying

눈은 울고 난 다음이라 퉁퉁 부었고

and a voice so hoarse that I'd most likely been wailing.

목은 완전 쉬어서 분명 통곡을 하고 있었을 거예요.

I don't have much recollection of what actually happened,

실제로 무슨 일이 있었는지 기억하기는 힘들었지만

but I remember feeling frustrated, sad and afraid.

답답하고, 슬프고, 무서운 감정은 기억하고 있었죠.

Now you've known me for only about 10 minutes,

저를 아신 지 약 10분 정도 되었지만

but you can probably tell that this was really not like me,

저답지 않다고 느끼셨을 겁니다.

so when I came to my senses about what had happened,

제가 제정신을 차리고 무슨 일이 있었는지 알아챘을 때

I was in shock.

충격에 빠졌죠.

There was no other way of saying it other than that I needed help,

제가 도움이 필요하다는 말 외에는 달리 설명할 방법이 없었고

both in the sense of I needed some type of therapy help,

도움은 치료 목적에서의 도움도 있었지만

but also help in getting out of that situation.

이 상황에서 벗어나는 도움도 필요했죠.

It was one of the lowest moments of my life,

제 인생에서 최악의 날 중 하나였죠.

and even in that moment,

그 순간에조차

my mind was running at hyperspeed into problem-solving mode.

제 머리는 문제해결 회로를 초고속으로 돌리고 있었죠.

What do I do with this?

이걸 어떻게 해야 하지?

If I don't fix this, then I'm even more of a disappointment.

이걸 해결하지 못하면 저 자신에게 더욱 실망할테고

If I don't resolve this, then I'm even more of a failure.

이걸 해결하지 못하면 저는 더한 실패자일테니까요.

Those are things that were running through my mind,

그러한 생각들이 제 머릿속에 지나가는 중에도

and it didn't even occur to me that I could ask for help.

도움을 요청할 수도 있다는 생각은 들지 않았죠.

I was surrounded by so many people who cared for me and wanted to help,

제 주변에 저를 생각하고 도움을 주고 싶은 많은 사람을 두고도

but I just couldn't see them.

볼 생각을 못했죠.

Until finally, my good friend had to literally hold me by my shoulders

결국에는 저의 친한 친구가 제 어깨를 잡으면서

and force me to ask for help.

도움을 요청하라고 강요했습니다.

"Can you do this?"

"할 수 있겠어?"

"No."

"아니"

"Do you need help?"

"도움이 필요해?"

"Yes."

"응."

"Can I help you?"

"내가 도와줘도 돼?"

"Yes."

"응."

"Can I get others that love and care for you to help you too?"

"너를 생각하고 사랑하는 사람들 불러서 같이 도와달라고 해도 되니?"

"Yes."

"응."

That was my grown-up version of locking eyes with my teacher.

제가 어른이 된 버전으로 선생님께 시선을 맞추는 순간이었죠.

And just like that,

그리하여

as soon as I said, "Yes, you may help me,"

"응, 나를 도와줘도 돼"라고 하자마자

I felt a tingling of hope

희미하게 빛나는 희망을 보았고

and some sort of control coming back.

제정신이 돌아오는 것을 느꼈습니다.

And if you think about it,

생각을 해보면

isn't it so weird we spend all of childhood

이상한 것이 저희가 어린 시절을 도움을 요청을 그렇게 잘하고

being so good at asking for help

and are expected to grow up to be these self-reliant human beings

자립심이 강한 사람으로 성숙할 것으로 기대받으면서 자라고

and we get so good at it

실제로 잘하게 되는데

that we have to be reminded that it's OK to ask for help?

스스로 도움을 요청하는 것은 괜찮다고 상기시켜줘야 하는 게 이상하지 않나요?

Later, that moment helped me realize so many things.

나중에 그 순간이 저에게 많은 것을 깨닫는 데 도움을 주었습니다.

I'm always so happy to help others and I love it.

저는 항상 남을 돕는 것이 좋습니다.

Why wouldn't others be willing to help me?

그럼 다른 사람들이 절 도와주고 싶은 것도 이해가 되죠.

And more importantly,

더 중요한 것은

why wouldn't I want others to feel the happiness and joy

왜 제가 다른 사람들이 샘 같은 사람들을 도와주면서

that comes from helping the Sams of the world?

행복과 즐거움을 느끼길 바라지 않겠어요?

We all want to be the best Sams in life:

우리는 모두 샘 같은 사람들의 삶이 잘 되기를 바랍니다.

to be strong, independent and self-reliant,

강하고, 독립적이지만

but we don't always have to be.

항상 그럴 필요는 없습니다.

So let's start asking for help more often,

그래서 도움을 더 자주 요청해봅시다.

because helping Sams is a privilege and a gift.

왜냐하면 샘 같은 사람들을 돕는 것은 특권이자 선물이기 때문이죠.
